The PetaPixel Podcast is a fantastic blend of news, educational content, and entertaining photography information. Hosted by Jaron Schneider, Chris Nichols, and Jordan Drake, this podcast offers a great mix of personalities that keeps listeners engaged throughout each episode. While watching the show on YouTube may offer a visual component that one misses when only listening to the audio version, there is an added benefit of appearing less distracted to your boss if you choose to listen instead.

One of the best aspects of The PetaPixel Podcast is the variety of content it covers. The hosts discuss a range of topics including new camera releases, industry news, gear reviews, and photography techniques. This diversity ensures that there is something for everyone interested in photography or videography. Additionally, the addition of Jordan and Chris to the already highly knowledgeable staff brings fresh perspectives and expertise to the table. Their insights and opinions enhance the overall quality of the podcast.

However, there are some potential downsides to this podcast. As mentioned earlier, listening to the audio version means missing out on the visual elements that are present in the YouTube videos. This can be a drawback when discussing specific gear or demonstrating techniques. It would be beneficial if the hosts could find ways to incorporate more descriptive explanations or provide links for listeners to reference later. Additionally, while Jaron, Chris, and Jordan's personalities create an engaging dynamic on-air, some listeners may prefer a more focused approach with less banter and more concise discussions.

In conclusion, The PetaPixel Podcast delivers a fantastic mix of news and educational content in an entertaining format. Whether you're a long-time follower or new to their work, this podcast provides ample opportunities to hear expert opinions and stay up-to-date with new releases and news in the photo and video world. Despite some minor drawbacks regarding visual elements and excessive banter at times, The PetaPixel Podcast remains a must-listen for anyone passionate about photography or videography.

While many of the creator-focused additions to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra are direct responses to what Apple is doing with the iPhone (digital aperture adjustment and log video are prime examples), it is perhaps Google that Samsung should be most wary of. Because it relies so much on what Google develops when it comes to AI enhancements, it might be harder for Samsung to meaningfully stand out to Android users. The PetaPixel Podcast team discusses! The L-mount Alliance was formed in 2018. While there has been a steady release of cameras for this mount since then, considering the number of companies involved, it is a bit thin – especially for still photographers. With the recent announcement of the Leica SL3-S -- which feels like it's not the best value for the dollar in ways that go beyond even typical expectations of Leica cameras in the past-- we found ourselves asking: if you were coming in fresh to mirrorless and were thinking of investing in a system, is L-mount worth it over the alternatives? If not, why? What is missing? Chris Niccolls, Jordan Drake, and I dig into it. With smartphone cameras coming to a plateau on quality -- especially on zoom lenses -- there is a distinct spot for point-and-shoots. Compact cameras certainly have value and the team thinks there is definitely a place for them in the market today, but also thinks there is a "right" and "wrong" way for manufacturers to jump in on this popular trend. Sure, these kinds of cameras need to be affordable but it's often not quite enough to just slap a USB-C charging port on a compact camera design from 8 years ago and call it good. That said, there are a few compact cameras that the team thinks would be okay to just re-release with minor upgrades to start serving the market right away. Everything You Need to Know About the Canon R1 and R5 Mark II

Today, Canon announced the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II – two highly anticipated cameras that say a lot about where the company stands on technology and, more importantly, how what it can provide photographers compares to its peers. Each camera alone is a big deal for Canon but together they mark what is arguably the most important launch for the company in the digital photography era -- it is unquestionably the most important launch for Canon since it moved to mirrorless. It was odd, then, that Canon gave US media so little time with the cameras. This week on The PetaPixel Podcast, Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake join me to go over all of the details about the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II that we weren't able to talk about when we got hands-on time with them a couple of weeks ago in Phoenix, Arizona. We weren't able to dedicate the time to doing things as we would typically for camera launches because Canon only provided us about two hours of shooting time. If we attempted to record all of this information on site, we wouldn't have had any time to evaluate the equipment. Beyond that, Canon wasn't able to provide concrete information to many of our questions in Phoenix. While we did eventually get final specifications this week, a lot was still missing. It doesn't seem like Canon wants to share everything and we'll have to get production units in hand to provide full information to everyone. So because of our limited time and because we didn't have enough information when we had the R1 and R5 Mark II in-hand, we focused our efforts on explaining the most important aspects of each camera with the anticipation that we would spend a lot more time discussing those features in a podcast format. Now that podcast is here, and we do our best to answer every question we think you might have about both cameras. Enjoy! Because of Fujifilm's massive launch last week (and Sigma dropped a new 24-70mm f/2.8, too), the PetaPixel Podcast team had to record early and release later than usual, but that also meant a lot happened that they didn't get to talk about. That changes this week, because there was a ton to go over including Canon finally annoucning the development of the EOS R1, a camera that has been in development for at least three years. But that didn't go as smoothly as Canon perhaps would have preferred, as Adorama published fake specifications for the camera on their website and was then forced to make a public apology. Beyond that, Adobe announced that Firefly generative AI tools were coming to Lightroom and Ricoh's new GRIII HDF is so popular that Japan had to resort to selling it by lottery. Two of these announcements, the lenses, were expected: Fujifilm is one of the few companies that publishes lens roadmaps well ahead of official product announcements.
