Who do we have to thank for this week's stunning couple of Stefan Dennis and Gillian Blakeney (aka Paul Robinson and Christina Alessi)? Well, this is the work of comedian Gearoid Farrelly, who finds a kindred spirit in Grainne for this deep dive into the real and fictional love lives of this once aspirational couple. I had such a great chat with Gearoid Farrelly. He is a Dublin based Stand Up comedian and he is hilarious. He also tells a tough story about being bullied while growing up in Finglas. He jokingly admits he was the last one in his family to know he was gay and he is very funny talking about it. He talks about getting into comedy and also has some very insightful thoughts on the Marriage equality referendum and how it felt as a gay man in Ireland during the campaign. We could all do with some light relief these days, but for our comedians the restrictions have really reduced their ability to make us laugh. To look at the comedy scene, or lack of it during Covid, we’re joined in by comedians Eleanor Tiernan in London and Gearoid Farrelly here in studio.

Hilarious & brilliant Gearoid Farrelly is my glorious guest this week. This podcast episode was recorded in front of a live studio audience in Smock Alley and it was all the fun! Gearoid was a terrifically generous, entertaining and honest guest, speaking about such topics as: growing up gay in Finglas in the 90s, experiencing bullying, homophobic bullying, accountability - where were the adults?, coming out, denial, dating, joining musical theatre groups, school reunions, stand-up comedy, self-acceptance and how fostering kittens and acquiring the gorgeous 'Boots' has changed his life! :)

This is another side to a story we've already told but what a story this is. In this episode comedian Gearoid Farrelly chats to singer and actress Celena Cherry about her time as the front woman of 90's R&B band the Honeyz along with band members Heavenli Denton and Naima Belkhiati. The band debuted in 1998 and had a massive hit with the self-penned "Finally Found". They followed it closely with other mega-hits like "End Of The Line" and "Won't Take It Lying Down". The band struggled with internal conflict and Heavenli left just as they were about to sign a million pound deal with Def Jam records in the US, then unprecedented for a 90's girlband. But the deal falling apart wasn't only drama caused by the line-up change. In a bizarre move the groups management salvaged a promotional tour of Australia by adding to the lineup a lookalike of Heavenli Denton (the band member that had left) in the hope that Australian fans won't notice. Almost 20 years later fans uncovered this slight of hand in internet footage from the tour and so was born the Honeyz meme "Fake-Hev". As heard in episode one, Mariama Goodman from the band Solid Harmonie joined the group and the hits continued. But Naima who was powerful force in the group clashed with her from day one. Eventually after eleven months Mariama and the accepted story is that the management brought Heavenli back to the group and insisted she rejoin much to the horror of Celena and Naima. But Celena explains that this isn't exactly how it actually happened. The Honeyz gave us some of the best RnB songs of ninties but they existed in an industry that was inherently misogynistic and unapologetically racist. Sickness and death brings with it a broad range of emotions, and one that is often overlooked is humour. Gearoid Farrelly is an Irish comic who has toured with the likes of Joan Rivers, Sarah Millican and a host more of stand-up legends, since breaking on to the Irish scene over 10 years ago. Today he shared his own story about his beautiful friendship with Anne Marie Buckley, who passed away on the 1st of March 2018.Gearoid moved into an apartment 10 years ago, and after a series of unscheduled and at times unwanted call-ins from his new neighbour, he soon realised that she was actually in the market for a neighbourhood pal, as opposed to a cup of sugar or lend of tea bags. Soon Gearoid, Anne and his partner became really close friends - “a troika” as he described , as they would meet up at least 2 / 3 times a week for breakfast, coffee, dinners. A beautiful, normal friendship. Gearoid’s chat with Sasha and Venetia in this week’s podcast is descriptive, emotive , sad and of course funny. As a stand up comedian, he speaks about the complexities of trying to make others laugh, while he was going through his own personal and self described hell, as Anne fell sick. He also talks to Sasha and Venetia about the importance and need for a release of humour, particularly when things feel completely full of darkness during an illness and after a loss. ‘Geri's one of those ones where you're best friends for a month and they you have a big bust-up and just never speak to her again.;’ This week we talk Spice Girls with the comedic genius behind ‘Fascinated’ Gearoid Farrelly. Gearoid murders our dreams by outting Geri as a psycho manipulator, shames the band for hijacking the term ‘girl-power’ for their own ends of world domination, outs the perpetual back-flipper who once treated herself to a water in a local Dublin newsagents, condemns their last album with a disdain previously reserved for when Julie when she forgets to press the record button, and offers his take on Victoria ‘aren’t all trousers parellel trousers?’ Beckham. Which Spice Girl had a solo album that Gearoid found mildly palatable? Why doesn’t Emma Bunton give up the ghost on the engagement? Did Victoria’s choice to embark on a duet with Dane Bowers mark he beginning of the end for modern music as we know it? What the hell has Cheryl Cole done to her face? Why is Julie still clicking into The Daily Mail despite her flat denials to the contrary? What solo song made an indelible mark on Emma Doran’s Godless soul? On a scale of one to overly produced nineties ten, how devastating was the musical debacle that was Holler?
Ep 38: The Song With Wings with Chesney Hawkes In this episode comedian Gearoid Farrelly chats to nineties heart-throb Chesney Hawkes about the song that catapulted him to the top of the charts in 1991 and went on to become the 20th biggest selling song of the nineties. As well as reflecting on the dark days after the success had gone away Chesney also tells about his life before stardom came along In this episode Gearoid learns Chesney was the paper boy for another 80s pop-star, that a very famous film director has featured Chesney’s song in every one of his movies and Gearoid finally gets an answer to a question that has been tormenting him…. This interview originates from Gearoid Farrelly: https://itunes.apple.com/ie/podcast/fascinated/id800584884?mt=2 https://www.headstuff.org/fascinated/ Jo Youle has lived two lifetimes. In the 90s she was part of the band Scarlet who had a massive hit with the song “Independent Love Song”. Her life was writing and recording music and a whirlwind of promotion, photoshoots and the terrifying prospect of playing live to huge audiences. Alongside her music career Jo also worked as a volunteer at the Samaritans. Scarlet’s pop stardom ended, after their ill-fated second album. Jo continued volunteering at the Samaritans and then went on to become a director of Helplines at Missing People; a UK charity which is a lifeline when someone disappears. In 2012 she became the organisation’s Chief Executive. As well as having a very unusual career path, chatting with Jo was fascinating because of her passion and commitment to her work.
