On the Saturday August 10, 2024 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Clare Titley, director of “The Contestant,” a feature doc, now available on Hollywood Suite On Demand. Narrated by Fred Armisen, it is an intimate portrait of Tomoaki Hamatsu, a Japanese reality TV star, nicknamed Nasubi, left naked in a room for more than a year and tasked with entering contests to earn food and clothing, while, unknown to him, millions of television viewers all over Japan watched his every move. The show turned him into an unwitting superstar, but at what cost? Then we'll get to know Jonathan Torrens. You know him from Taggart and Torrens, the podcast with 4 million downloads he does with Jeremy Taggart, and his work on shows like “Street Cents” and his talk show “Jonovision” and, of course, his legendary performance as rapper J-Roc on the “Trailer Park Boys.” Today we talk about his latest project, the Truro, Nova Scotia based production company Canadian Content Studios and his new show “Roll With It.”

What is normal anyway? We may have spent our childhoods trying to fit in, but now being a “normie” is an insult. When Jonathan Torrens moved to L.A., surrounded by buff guys in v-necks, he realized his future was not as a Brad Pitt stud. He says he's quirky, we think he's funny. He's been a white rapper on ‘Trailer Park Boys', a Quebecker who “Lévesque's” his hair on ‘Shoresy', all deeply offensive. Or is it? He says you gotta love to mock. He also got radio Mo to talk about “Dudes, dicks and does”. Jonathan Torrens is Canadian actor and media personality. You know him from Street Cents, his talk show Jonovision, and for his role as J-Roc in Trailer Park Boys. He also delivers strong beard work as Noah Dyck in the series Letterkenny. Born in PEI, he insists on living in Nova Scotia with his family, where normalcy is tolerated if not practiced. We love writing and would love for you to read what we write. The report says they're not shying away from declaring hard truths of the RCMP response during and after the Mass Casualty Event in 2020. And as Jonathan Torrens wrote, "Hoping with the release of this MCC report today there is at the very least a bit of comfort, closure and change."
Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We chat today with Jonathan, from his home in the country in Nova Scotia (Atlantic Canada). Jonathan is an accomplished comedic actor, writer, director and producer – having started in the entertainment business while still in highschool. By the time he starting developing his popular character J-Roc on the Trailer Park Boys in the early 2000s, Jonathan had long been diligently building his “Swiss army knife” cache of skills in the business. And it's from this well that we draw oodles of wisdom, wit and introspection from Jonathan with this conversation. We learn the grounding effects of starting your day with shovelling poop, owning the things you don't know and taking criticism as teaching moments. We discuss the universal magic of silly and its victimless crimes, the power of “chameleon” as a verb and the tight link between joy and pain. We have a good time discussing funny and where his particular sweet spot of funny is – and why. We also hear about the literal (and metaphorical) choice he made while in Los Angeles between a casino commercial and a dentist visit that brought him back to understanding what he was actually made of … a man living in the quiet, creating, and visiting the noise. Jonathan: a “thank you”. To DONATE to the Behind Greatness podcast, please visit here: https://behindgreatness.org. As a charity, tax receipts are issued to donors. PODCAST EXCLUSIVE - Jonathan Torrens - I was super stoked to chat with Jonathan. I grew up watching him on television (Street Cents, Jonovision, Trailer Park Boys, etc.) and in the few times we've hung out in the past, he's been one of the funniest people I've ever encountered. He's had a career in entertainment for over 3 decades, and he keeps taking risks and reinventing himself. It's incredibly inspiring. This chat lived up to my high expectations in every way. It was both hilarious and insightful. Grateful to Jonathan for taking the time to hang out. Hope you enjoy it. Check out his own podcast (with Jeremy Taggart) at www.taggartntorrens.ca.
Christmas Break brings a real Christmas present. The NHL got postponed for a bit, Olympics and World Juniors got cancelled, the boys are bummed, then the Oilers came back and laid a stinker against the Blues. This week we talked: - Oilers gaining some life and then playing flaccid after the return of COVID reinforcements - Dave Tippett vs. Rookies - Dave Cameron/Ken Campbell are elitists - World Juniors tournament recap lol and the reaction to the cancellation Then all sadness evaporated because we were joined by *checks notes* JONATHAN TORRENS! (Trailer Park Boys, Mr. D, Letterkenny, Jonovision) to talk his new show Vollies, his time on Trailer Park Boys as J-Roc, his experiences with other celebrities including the Queen, his Oilers fandom and so much more! Jonathan Torrens has harvested his time in the Canadian spotlight and turned it in to a beautiful thing. Love, balance and creativity. We reconnect with an old CBC fellow traveler to see how the corn grows in Nova Scotia these days and where life has taken him.
Jonathan Torrens is an ideas guy — he's an actor, writer, director, producer, podcast host, production rental house owner, and professional nice person who's been graciously and usually hilariously gracing Canadian television (and film and computer) screens since 1989. He pops in from Truro to talk about his t-shirt campaign in support of entertainment workers, his new homegrown series Vollies, and offers up some of his past experiences as a working performer in Canada and Hollywood. It's a gentle, kind, funny trip.
In the conclusion of my chat with Jeremy, we talk about the height of OLP craziness, playing Woodstock, the making of Happiness, how/why Matt Cameron (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) covered for him on Spiritual, why Mike Turner left the band, his new record with his podcast partner Jonathan Torrens and more. Treevenge depicts Christmas from the perspective of sentient Christmas trees. After being hacked down and shipped to homes, they are subject to "humiliation" by humans, who decorated them and make them stand in their living rooms. The Christmas trees have had enough, and go on to massacre and kill an entire town as part of their uprising. Treevenge is a short film written and directed by Jason Eisener, and produced by Yer Dead Productions. Shooting started in November 2007, and ended in February 2008. Post-production was completed in June 2008. The film stars Jonathan Torrens, Sarah E. Dunsworth, Lex Gigeroff, Molly Dunsworth, Glenn Matthews, and Kristin Slaney. Jonathan Torrens talks about the CBC, what really happened on Trailer Park Boys, and about that one song you love to hate. From hosting his own show on the CBC to playing J-Roc on Trailer Park Boys, Jonathan Torrens has been a mainstay of the Canadian entertainment industry for decades. So what’s his deal? Is he a comedian? A talk show host? Or is he just that guy who wrote a truly terrible song called “Thank U Canada”. “One of my youngest memories at four years old was him quitting drums in 1979, literally destroying his drum set.” Jeremy Taggart is a household name in Canadian music due to his twenty-one-year career with the iconic rock band Our Lady Peace. Taggart began playing with OLP at the age of seventeen and from there on out he experienced life on the road playing packed venues and making records. In 2014 it all came to an end for him with OLP and he decided to reinvent himself. Enter Taggart & Torrens podcast. Their podcast has been downloaded (at the time of writing this) over four million times! They have toured their musical/comedy act, wrote a best-selling book titled “Canadianity: Tales From The True North Strong And Freezing” and they even released an album this year titled “Bahds”. They have managed to create a buzz with their show by infusing strong Canadian flare that we Canucks can strongly relate to and a serious dose of comedy. On a more personal note, to record this episode was an absolute honour. Given the fact that I am Canadian and grew up during the era in which OLP was in the Canadian music spotlight, Taggart was definitely a major influence to me growing up with drums. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed making it. You Will Hear About…. Touring in Canada. Mushroom Fish n’Chips and cowboy boots. How the podcast started with Jonathan Torrens and everything they have worked on together. The early days of Jeremy’s drumming and starting with OLP. Why Should You Listen? First and foremost, this is just a fun and hilarious hang. Taggart & Torrens is a very casual and comical podcast, which I strongly recommend! I did want to capture the spirit of their program on this episode. A dash of interview amongst random conversation. There is by no means anything essential in this episode except for some good laughs. Wow do we have an EPIC show to begin 2018! On episode 24, we have a celebrity guest for you - Canadian comedy icon Jonathan Torrens ... aka J-Roc from Trailer Park Boys ... aka Jonovision ... aka talented writer for the hilarious show Letterkenny Problems.
