Ritu Java is the Co-founder and CEO of PPC Ninja, a software tool and service provider managing Amazon ads for six, seven, and eight-figure brands. Ritu has initiated dozens of PPC mastermind programs, workshops, and webinars due to her self-professed passion for advertising and data science. She's also trained hundreds of Amazon sellers on PPC. Ritu started her e-commerce journey over 10 years ago, sharing her knowledge on over 100 podcasts, blogs, and conferences, including Global Sources Summit, The Billion Dollar Seller Summit, and The Prosper Show. In this episode… Amazon sellers use PPC data to determine their cost of advertising. Inflated data leads to overspending and wasting away profits. So how can you avoid sabotaging your advertising campaigns? Business leader and PPC guru Ritu Java of PPC Ninja recommends these three strategies: Devise a PPC budget, caution sponsored display ads, and perform periodic audits. Regarding a PPC budget, Ritu warns against allowances based on your competitors' TACoS. Instead, she suggests using a formula to determine costs. Besides being expensive, sponsored display ads can be ineffective since it targets audiences with specific interests, and may fail to generate sales. Audits ensure your PPC data is accurate, identify potential issues, track campaign performances, and provide you peace of mind that you're in compliance with Amazon's policies. Join Josh Hadley in today's episode of the eComm Breakthrough Podcast, where he interviews Ritu Java, Co-founder and CEO of PPC Ninja, about Amazon advertising strategies to maximize scalability. Over the past couple of weeks, you've heard a handful of podcasts recorded in the Philippines. You've heard from Mia and all our employees, including Abby and Muffins. If you've listened to episode 256, these ladies talked a little bit about their specific responsibilities for EcomCrew. But what distinguishes them from the rest is the fact that they work directly for Dave and me. So, I wanted to get them back on the podcast and hear their perspective on what it's like to work on the brand and for the ‘EcomCrew Guys'. Mia didn't leave the room soon enough so she'll be making a cameo on this episode too. Taking the initiative I'm the type of employer who doesn't want to micromanage so I value initiative in the members of my team. The ladies had to pick up this skill and hone it while working for the brand and now have confidence and autonomy in their tasks. First time in Hong Kong As you all know, I love to travel. I also enjoy it when I'm with first-timers in a favorite city. Hong Kong is certainly that city. Last April Abby and Muffins were able to join us there for the EcomCrew Mastermind and check out the booths in the Global Sources Summit. It was their first international travel and I daresay they both had a great time. Listen to the full podcast with these awesome ladies of EcomCrew. Before I hop on a plane to Asia, I thought it would be a good time to do a review of those goals I made for myself at the start of the year. Sell a brand. We already did this. ColorIt is officially no longer ours. We'll be discussing the sale in a series of separate podcasts which is definitely something I'm looking forward to. Position another brand for sale in late 2020. All of our brands now have their own LLCs. I don't know which brand it will be, but we plan to figure this out in the middle of this year. We'll start thinking about this now in anticipation that we will be in a better spot with whatever brand we'll be letting go of next year. Getting back to location independence. Now that ColorIt's off our plate, it's allowed us to move everything to a 3PL and shut down our California warehouse. It's also allowed me to start filming episodes of EcomCrew Roadshow. Reducing debt to zero dollars. We have completed the first step of this. ColorIt's sale has allowed us to pay all of our business debt. We are working on clearing our mortgage by the end of this year. Hike the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. This will be happening in August and I've already started training for it and doing 5-mile walks. Take at least 10 weeks of personal travel. We'll be going to Japan and I'm super looking forward to going to Tokyo. We'll have three full days to spend there. That comes after going to Hong Kong for the Mastermind and Global Sources Summit and the Philippines to visit my team. Record 6 or more episodes of the EcomCrew Roadshow. Two of those are already done. We're planning to do at least four more. Invest in at least 1 ecommerce business. This is either going to be investing in something that can be a great story for EcomCrew or starting something new. Whatever it is, it will be a transparent case study for all of us to learn from. Lose 10 more pounds. The plan is to lose about a pound a month. I'm pretty convinced that I've lost some weight, although I would need to confirm that with a weighing scale. Visit the Philippines office in 2019. I'm gonna be there for two full weeks at the end of the month and at the beginning of May. Start selling our services for EcomCrew. We haven't started on this yet as staff members working for ColorIt were transferred as part of the sale. But the plan is to offer extra services to EcomCrew Premium members to give them the push they need to grow their businesses, at a minimal cost. The hope is to launch it this year. Significantly improve the quality of the podcast. Abby is doing pre-interview stuff to send over to me so I'm more prepared to do each episode. We also have a job offer out for a full-time video and audio editor. Film season 2 of 5 Minute Pitch. This will be happening in August. We'll be filming in Austin for a week. We're planning to change the format for this new season based on the things we've learned from the first one. Break each of our brands out into different companies. This is done but we're still in the middle of the repercussions of this move. We are still working on making things as organized as they can be. Start hosting in-person events for EcomCrew. This year, we're going to do at least two. We'll then do another one in Vancouver in the summer. Speak at 6 industry events. I think I'm already signed up for maybe 8 events at this point. Shift to doing things that only bring me immense personal fulfillment. This is a continuing journey but I am particularly enjoying the things I'm currently doing for EcomCrew. With Under the Hood and now with the Roadshow, I've had the chance to do this from a more personal level. Do intermittent fasting for all of 2019 (and eat less meat). I've been able to keep at this for the most part of the quarter. Not to drink the rest of 2019. I have done this but with one exception - a glass of champagne when we closed on ColorIt. That's where I'm at. Meghla Bhardwaj is the Head of Content Marketing at Global Sources and organizer of the Global Sources Summit. The summit is one that I really love, and for this year Dave and I will both be speaking at the event. Meghla has been on the podcast a couple of times talking about sourcing from China specifically through Global Sources, but this time our topic is different. Sourcing from India With the ongoing China trade war and the uncertainty of the future of tariffs for Chinese products, alternative sourcing countries have become more and more popular. One country that's been getting more attention is India. Compared with sourcing from China though, there is a void of information about sourcing from India. In this episode Meghla discusses the ins and outs of sourcing from India, more specifically: Advantages for Amazon sellers Products and categories India excels in Quality of the products compared to those made in China Payment terms and lead times Logistics India trade shows Navigating India with/without a guide If you want to know more about sourcing from India or Global Sources, you can reach out to Meghla at www.facebook.com/meghla.bhardwaj. Buy product samples instantly Meghla also introduces a new feature that lets buyers get product samples right on the Global Sources website. Skip the long email back-and-forth and low MOQ negotiation--buy your product samples instantly (price includes shipping) and test them before making a bulk order. Check out this new feature. Global Sources Summit discount This year's summit will be on April 27th to 29th in Hong Kong and Dave and I will be speaking there. Meghla was kind enough to hook us up with a sweet discount for EcomCrew listeners. Just use the code ECC100 when you purchase your ticket to get $100 off. EcomCrew Mastermind We're organizing our 2nd annual mastermind right before the Global Sources summit so if you'll be in Hong Kong on April 26th, this will be the perfect opportunity to come hang out. Whether you're making a trip to the Canton Fair or Global Sources for the first time ever or you're a frequent visitor to China this mastermind will be of incredible value to you. We've designed this mastermind to be an intimate meeting of less than 30 people, so check it out before seats run out. Thanks for listening to this episode! Until the next one, happy selling.
Andy and Liran recorded this episode straight from Hong Kong after speaking at the Global Sources Summit and attending the Canton Fair. After 2 weeks in China attending both Phase 1 & Phase 2 of the Canton Fair and also the Global Sources Summit, Andy feels that he has moved his business forward 6-8 months+ from where it would be if he had not gone. Andy found a supplier for the exact product that he has been looking for months for, and this supplier is not even on Alibaba.

I always look forward to joining ecommerce conferences. It's a great place to meet up with old friends and network with new people. Many of those I've met at these events have become guests on this podcast. Phil Leahy is no different. An ecommerce veteran, he built one of the largest eBay businesses retailing CDs & DVDs. He was the #1 eBay seller in Australia for a number of years. Somewhere along the way, he founded the Retail Global conference. Today, his company Retail Global Events is hosting these conferences in Australia and the United States. Phil and I met at the Global Sources Summit in Hong Kong. He approached me after my presentation and invited me to come and speak at Retail Global Las Vegas next month. In turn, I've asked him to come on the show to give us information about this much-awaited gathering of ecommerce influencers, sellers, and online marketplace representatives. With that, here are some takeaways from the talk that we had. How did Retail Global start? Retail Global, formerly known as The Internet Conference, started around 13 years ago to address the need of having a local conference in Australia where online sellers can share information freely. Its initial aim was to help people sell successfully on eBay but has since morphed into ecommerce, eventually including discussions and workshops for today's biggest marketplace, Amazon. It wasn't until four years ago when Phil was able to bring Retail Global to American shores. The year 2012 marked the first Retail Global Las Vegas conference. Now more than a decade later, both Retail Global conferences in Australia and the United States are attended by hundreds of ecommerce entrepreneurs from across the globe. The biggest influencers and success stories in the industry speak at these events. Stats for Retail Global Las Vegas 75 speakers 50 exhibitors 5 different sessions running concurrently 2 marketplace streams centered around eBay and Amazon Keynote speakers include Sean Dollinger, CEO of Namaste Technologies and Bob Schwartz, Founding President of Magento & Nordstrom.com, who will serve as the conference MC Amazon and eBay will be speaking at the event and will set up exhibition booths as well 20% average increase in turnover for ecommerce sellers who have attended the event and used what they learned to scale their business. We wrap up this session with Phil offering listeners a simple ecommerce tip but with the potential to have a massive impact. He urges other online sellers to include a small gift when shipping out a customer's purchase. “Surprise, delight, aftersale and don't advertise it.” he says. Retail Global Las Vegas will be happening at Planet Hollywood on October 9-11. Use the code for ECOM200 to get $200 off your ticket. Here's something you don't hear about very often: me and Dave sitting side by side on a train heading to China talking about EcomCrew. With me being based in the US and Dave in Canada (and Dave most recently living in China for the last 8 months), communication has not been very easy. We had to deal with time zones and dropped calls, making it hard for Dave to be on the podcast with me (he doesn't like being on the podcast very often in the first place, making it a lot harder). Our trip to Asia was very productive not just for our respective businesses but for EcomCrew as well, as it gave time for me and Dave to be in the same place and talk about EcomCrew in real time. One of these moments was during a train ride from Hong Kong to Guangzhou on our way to the Canton Fair. We decided to record our conversation amidst train noises in the background for your listening pleasure. Here are some conversation points: Our speaking engagements at the Global Sources Summit How well the first EcomCrew mastermind turned out The Canton Fair we're headed to Our Gentleman's bet Using Jungle Scout not to find products but to do something else Exciting new EcomCrew stuff Despite the backgound noise of train hums and Chinese chatter, this train ride has been an enjoyable experience--Dave and I even made a gentleman's bet on something in relation the Global Sources Summit. Going to trade shows is by far our favorite method of sourcing. I can tell you so many reasons right now why we prefer it over everything else, but I'd be getting ahead of myself. Some of the trade shows I absolutely love going to are those hosted by Global Sources. Much like Alibaba, Global Sources is a frequented supplier directory on the internet. However, unlike Alibaba, Global Sources is usually thought of as having higher quality, vetted suppliers. Global Sources also runs a conference, the Global Sources Summit, which is one of the biggest events geared towards ecommerce sellers importing from China. Our guest for today's episode is Meghla Bhardwaj, Head of Content Marketing of Global Sources and organizer of the summit. Meghla is no stranger to the podcast; she has been a guest on Episode 63 and Dave interviewed her last year, which you can read about here. Our conversation revolves around two topics: results of a survey carried out by Global Sources on trade show attendees and tips and best practices on how to improve sourcing. Conversation points: Results of the survey carried out on two groups: traditional non-ecommerce sellers and ecommerce sellers (the goal of the survey is to learn the top challenges importers are facing so that the Global Sources team can address their needs better) How some importers don't have a set agenda when roaming trade shows--they look for inspiration and new ideas instead The advantages of attending a trade show over simply sourcing online Supplier selection criteria of ecommerce importers 3 things importers should do to improve sourcing What to do to ensure quality Global Sources summit event details Global Sources Summit The summit will run from April 18th-20th in Hong Kong, overlapping with the trade show that runs from the 18th to the 21st. "Definitely I would be vigilant like in an initial screening process. I know most online sellers probably don't have the luxury of being able to see all of their factories but if they do, if they do go to Canton Fair, I highly recommend it. Just so you know what you're dealing with and if you're not comfortable with that, definitely have some backup plans." - Gary Huang, founder of 80/20 Sourcing One of the best perks of going to the Global Sources Summit is that I get to meet many people who are a wealth of knowledge for my business. One of these people is Gary Huang, founder of 80/20 Sourcing, a blog dedicated to show entrepreneurs how to source from China efficiently and cost-effectively. I heard him speak at Global Sources and I knew I just had to invite him to be a podcast guest so that I can share with you the valuable things I learned from him. Gary lives in China and this episode was recorded via a call I made to him from California. The call quality suffered from the Chinese internet connection which, as you know, is not exactly zippy. Nevertheless, this episode is fully packed with great value for anyone who imports anything from China so it will be worth powering through the bad call quality to get to the good stuff. Gary's topic at the Global Sources Summit is about supplier negotiation. There are so many things you can negotiate with your supplier aside from price of goods, and we talk about that a little bit in this episode. As a bonus, Gary has been awesome to give EcomCrew listeners access to his Negotiations pack, which includes the Online Seller's Guide to Negotiating with Suppliers e-book, a negotiations cheatsheet, and a "Secrets of Successful Sourcing" Masterclass video. You can get them all here for FREE. Here are the highlights of our conversation: Gary's ecommerce background and why he started 80/20 Sourcing Why he moved to China and what it's like living in the midst of pollution His direct insight on the ongoing factory shutdowns The positive and negative effects of stricter Chinese environmental laws How to deal with the shutdowns as an Amazon seller Why visiting your factory or doing a third party inspection is very important Direction of Chinese manufacturing Is it a good idea to start sourcing from other countries such as India or Vietnam? Outlook and best practices for sourcing for 2018 We hope you find this episode useful, as I did when I listened to Gary during his Global Sources talk. "Sometimes you have to do something that makes you uncomfortable to further your career and your life and I really believe that." - Mike Jackness on speaking at the Global Sources Summit This episode is a play-by-play report of my entire trip to Asia, covering the Global Sources Summit, the Canton Fair, meeting with our Philippines team -- basically everything my team and I did while we were in Asia from early October through early November. If you're like me who doesn't like following someone's life abroad on an hour-by-hour basis, then this episode probably isn't for you. But if you are in ecommerce and have never been to these events in Asia before (or you're just curious about what we do there), this will give you a pretty good overview of what it's like to be on the road, traveling back and forth between cities to attend fairs and meet people, things you might need to do if you are serious in growing your importing business. These are the highlights of my nearly month-long trip: getting on a ridiculously luxurious first class flight to Hong Kong for about $50 hiking and exploring Hong Kong during my first few days there the ill-timed typhoon my presentation at the Global Sources Summit where I was rated as the number 1 speaker (this just goes to show that you can accomplish anything once you set your mind to it) EcommerceFuel meetups, masterminds, and new plans to take EcomCrew to the next level visiting my Philippines team going to the Canton Fair the amazing people I met from the ecommerce community My wife Michelle, our Director of Ecommerce Jacqueline, and I crammed so many activities during our time in Asia that when we arrived back in San Diego we were all absolutely drained. These trips are very productive and rewarding, but be warned -- it can also be terribly exhausting. Nevertheless, trips like this are very valuable for entrepreneurs looking for serious growth. The trick is laying out what you want to accomplish while you're there, which for me, are three things: meeting as many like-minded people/entrepreneurs as possible, touring as many factories as possible, and building as many relationships as you can with the people you already work with. This week's episode is a special one, as it's one of the few episodes where I get to have Dave on the show. Better yet, we are sitting in the same room in Hong Kong, just a couple of days after the Global Sources Summit where we both had a blast. Hopefully videos of the talks will be released soon for those who were not able to attend the event. We have many takeaways from our time in Hong Kong but one of the most eye-opening is just how much Chinese sellers are invading the Amazon market. They've grown comfortable using Amazon FBA and have become sophisticated in their marketing techniques. Adding to this is the fact that more and more of these sellers are using downright black-hat techniques to try to win more sales. This topic is just one of the 5 key takeaways Dave and I will talk about in this episode. Here are other conversation points: What Chinese sellers are doing to get market share and what you can do to protect your sales Amazon's cross-border program and how American sellers can benefit from it Black-hat tactics employed by many Chinese sellers PPC optimization Increasing pollution crackdowns by the Chinese government and how it can affect you Increasing Chinese labor costs With Chinese sellers getting on the Amazon train and recent factory crackdowns, we might be facing a challenging time ahead. You might be tempted to attempt black-hat techniques like other sellers are doing to stay on top, but keep in mind that the dire consequences make it hardly worth doing. We highly encourage you to stay on Amazon's good side. Resources mentioned: Global Sources ams.amazon.com Stamped.io AsiaInspection We hope you enjoy Episode 93 of the EcomCrew Podcast. Hey there! It's Mike and I'm back from Asia. I'm going to take today's episode as an opportunity to give an honest account of my trip. For full disclosure, I was given a ticket to this event by the event coordinator. Meghala Bhardwaj was a guest on our show awhile back. The conditions she gave were I had to give an honest reaction and review of my experience. I was going to do that anyway, so it was a win-win for me. I was gone for a month, which is the longest I've been in Asia. Unfortunately, I spent this trip incredibly sick. So, I missed the Global Sources meet-up, but that was it. I really pushed myself to get out and network and I had some really great interactions during this trip. I attended two major trade shows while I was gone: The Global Sources Summit The Canton Fair I heard some good speakers and got some really useful practical advice. Here are some of the things from today's episode: Phases 2 and 3 of The Global Sources Summit. My experience, the speakers, and the networking. Great advice I received about dealing with Chinese manufacturers. Useful information for selling internationally. My biggest takeaway from The Global Sources Summit. How I celebrated my birthday. My trip to Cebu and the office I have over there for my employees. My awesome Filipino workforce. I will be attending Sellers' Summit in Fort Lauderdale, FL this month. I will speak on Friday and host a Mastermind on Thursday. If you plan on attending, I will see you there!
