It’s goals time. Before I go into 2019's list, revisiting the 19 goals I’ve set up for myself and my company is something that I like to do before we get too deep into the year. Some of these goals were aimed for myself personally and for the company. And in this episode, we’re going through each of them – the ones we achieved, the ones we failed, and the ones that we got through halfway. Before going through this latest and final update of the progress made on my 2019 goals, here are the links to all the previous ones to get you up to speed. E227: 19 Goals for 2019 E243: 2019 Goals, A Recap on the 1st Quarter E279: 2019 Goals, After 8 Months E289: 2019 Goals, After 11 Months 2019 consisted more of ups than downs but for some reason, when you hit those low points, they feel really heavy. We may not have achieved some of these goals but we were still able to achieve some of the really important ones, like selling ColorIt and being more location independent. So, here goes. Sell a brand. Position another brand for sale in late 2020. Getting back to location independence. Reducing debt to zero dollars. Hike the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. Take at least 10 weeks of personal travel. Record 6 or more episodes of the Roadshow. Invest in at least 1 ecommerce business. Lose 10 more pounds. Visit the Philippines office in 2019. Start selling our services for EcomCrew. Significantly improve the quality of the podcast. Film season 2 of the 5 Minute Pitch. Break each of our brands out into different companies. Start hosting personal events for EcomCrew. Speak at 6 industry events. Shift to doing things that only bring me immense personal fulfillment. Do intermittent fasting for all of 2019 and eat less meat. Not to drink the rest of 2019. I'm definitely glad to cross out most of the items on this list. They were things that in hindsight, might have been necessary and I just didn't know it yet. Being more location independent for the second half of 2019 restored my thirst for stability, so in 2020, I'd definitely like to be more rooted where I am. Well, it’s that time of the year again. At this point in 2018, we did a podcast about how to set up goals and systems. This time, we talk more about that topic and also talk about the importance of reflection. Make sure you go to pickleballkitchen.com for more!

In this episode of the podcast, I talk about my goal habits, how I set goals, and why I manage my goals in 12-week increments. I also share my personal goals for the quarter =)
Before I hop on a plane to Asia, I thought it would be a good time to do a review of those goals I made for myself at the start of the year. Sell a brand. We already did this. ColorIt is officially no longer ours. We'll be discussing the sale in a series of separate podcasts which is definitely something I'm looking forward to. Position another brand for sale in late 2020. All of our brands now have their own LLCs. I don't know which brand it will be, but we plan to figure this out in the middle of this year. We'll start thinking about this now in anticipation that we will be in a better spot with whatever brand we'll be letting go of next year. Getting back to location independence. Now that ColorIt's off our plate, it's allowed us to move everything to a 3PL and shut down our California warehouse. It's also allowed me to start filming episodes of EcomCrew Roadshow. Reducing debt to zero dollars. We have completed the first step of this. ColorIt's sale has allowed us to pay all of our business debt. We are working on clearing our mortgage by the end of this year. Hike the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. This will be happening in August and I've already started training for it and doing 5-mile walks. Take at least 10 weeks of personal travel. We'll be going to Japan and I'm super looking forward to going to Tokyo. We'll have three full days to spend there. That comes after going to Hong Kong for the Mastermind and Global Sources Summit and the Philippines to visit my team. Record 6 or more episodes of the EcomCrew Roadshow. Two of those are already done. We're planning to do at least four more. Invest in at least 1 ecommerce business. This is either going to be investing in something that can be a great story for EcomCrew or starting something new. Whatever it is, it will be a transparent case study for all of us to learn from. Lose 10 more pounds. The plan is to lose about a pound a month. I'm pretty convinced that I've lost some weight, although I would need to confirm that with a weighing scale. Visit the Philippines office in 2019. I'm gonna be there for two full weeks at the end of the month and at the beginning of May. Start selling our services for EcomCrew. We haven't started on this yet as staff members working for ColorIt were transferred as part of the sale. But the plan is to offer extra services to EcomCrew Premium members to give them the push they need to grow their businesses, at a minimal cost. The hope is to launch it this year. Significantly improve the quality of the podcast. Abby is doing pre-interview stuff to send over to me so I'm more prepared to do each episode. We also have a job offer out for a full-time video and audio editor. Film season 2 of 5 Minute Pitch. This will be happening in August. We'll be filming in Austin for a week. We're planning to change the format for this new season based on the things we've learned from the first one. Break each of our brands out into different companies. This is done but we're still in the middle of the repercussions of this move. We are still working on making things as organized as they can be. Start hosting in-person events for EcomCrew. This year, we're going to do at least two. We'll then do another one in Vancouver in the summer. Speak at 6 industry events. I think I'm already signed up for maybe 8 events at this point. Shift to doing things that only bring me immense personal fulfillment. This is a continuing journey but I am particularly enjoying the things I'm currently doing for EcomCrew. With Under the Hood and now with the Roadshow, I've had the chance to do this from a more personal level. Do intermittent fasting for all of 2019 (and eat less meat). I've been able to keep at this for the most part of the quarter. Not to drink the rest of 2019. I have done this but with one exception - a glass of champagne when we closed on ColorIt. That's where I'm at. I started thinking about moonshots after speaking with one of our investors Nikhil at CoVenture Crypto. He's a partner there. And I guess the back story on this is Nikhil Kalghatgi met with me and also Ateet from [00:02:30] CoVenture Crypto who runs their quant fund. We met for breakfast when I was in New York, and one of the questions that I like to ask investors is what's the best way to engage you. So Ateet had been helping us out with a bunch of pod related things. He's deep in data all day long. But this was the first time Nikhil and I had met in person, and I posed this question to him. And [00:03:00] he was pretty thoughtful and he responded that he likes to help out portfolio companies with moonshots, right? And so I was reflecting on that and I emailed Nikhil a little bit later, and said, "Hey, I'd really like to take you up on this offer of helping us define moonshots [00:04:00] as a company." And he sent me back this really thoughtful email to help me prepare for this meeting that we were setting up, and in that email, he outlined nine types of moonshots. So these are ... This is his IP. Thanks, Nikhil. So the first type of moonshot that he describes, the first category are [00:04:30] moonshots that are obviously impossible, right? He put obviously in quotes. These are things that you would like to do but are just obviously something that you can't do. And I think that kind of framing pushes you to think bigger. So that's category number one or type one. Type two, moonshot type two are imaginary dream partners. So when you're going [00:05:00] through this exercise and you get to number two, the objective here is to think about a dream partner that doesn't exist and just sort of define what the partnership would be, right? And the objective there is after you've defined them, you actually start looking for real world examples of these imaginary dream partners. The third type of moonshot is the brand elevation. So [00:05:30] think huge media partnerships. For us, for Nomics, this might be a partnership with the largest financial publication in the world, right? Providing data to them. Other companies might envision a Super Bowl ad, although that's almost never a good use of ad dollars. But what are some things that you can do that would immediately catapult your brand to the forefront of the space? [00:06:00] The fourth type of moonshot is distribution channels or partners, right? So if you're a consumer package good company, this might be getting Walmart or Target or whoever the biggest retailer is in your space to get your product in front of a lot of shoppers. The fifth category or type is [00:06:30] unique individuals in other sectors who might come and work for you. And I think often there's very fruitful like cross pollination that can be very beneficial to a company when they hire someone who's a leader in a tangential space that comes in and then runs their playbook in your company. That can be really great. I think there's some of the, actually arguably the biggest, [00:07:00] some of the biggest crypto companies are operating not solely in this sort of crypto-native capacity, right? They have connections in banking and Wall Street and stuff like that. The sixth type of moonshot is geographical growth. So do you want to expand to Europe or South America, China, whatever. What that might look like hypothetically. [00:07:30] The seventh category are partnerships that we talked about. Distributions channels and imaginary dream partners. This would be sort of like actual concrete partnerships. The eight category are what might it look...
