The Cinematic Schematic returns after a short hiatus to wrangle the Shai-Hulud sandworms in our review of Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part 1. The podcast can't discuss the feud between rival houses Atrieus and Harkonnen without the proper guests. Joining the show today are No Film School‘s Jo Light, the GoodTrash Genrecast‘s Dalton Stuart and The Cinematropolis‘s own Daniel Bokemper. Frank Herbert's 1965 novel has historically been tough to crack. Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky famously failed to get his version off the ground in the 1970s before the acclaimed Twin Peaks writer/director David Lynch released a critically panned adaptation in 1984. Eventually, The Sci-Fi Channel would take another stab at the material with a three-part Dune mini-series that would receive enough acclaim to get a follow-up series, Children of Dune. After the rights for another big-screen adaptation completed a shuffle and landed at Legendary Entertainment, Dennis Villeneuve was announced as the director in 2017. Though you wouldn't know it from the marketing, Villeneuve decided to break the novel into two parts, with the second half just being greenlit this week. After being delayed by a year due to the pandemic, Dune: Part 1 has finally made its way to the big […] The post Dune – The Cinematic Schematic Review appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

In this updated take on Dangerous Liasons, two step-siblings enter into a wager of lust-filled antics. In this episode, we take a look at how we think the film aged, the issues of adults playing teenagers, and more!  Then, we get down into 1984's Footloose with Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow, and Sarah Jessica Parker. We break this one open after spending several moments discussing movie title tracks. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. On this week's episode, we travel back to the 80s to talk motorcycles and leather jackets. Our focus this week? Kathryn Bigelow's directorial debut, The Loveless. In addition, it is also Willem Defoe's feature debut, as well. Riding with The Loveles The Loveless is co-written and co-directed by Bigelow and Monty Montgomery. It's the story of a biker gang, led by Defoe, who ride into a small town. The locals aren't too fond of these leather-clad miscreants and tense up, hoping they won't cause trouble. What ensues is an existential study on outsiders, masculinity and classicism in the 50s. We were a bit taken aback by our thoughts on The Loveless. It wasn't quite what we expected, but we were quite intrigued. In this episode, we play our weekly game; this week, Cinema's Best Bad Boys. Afterwards, we pull into analysis. We try to frame this debut into the rest of Bigelow's filmography. We also discuss the theme's that are rampant in the film, and some of her other works. After all of that, we make the final verdict—shelf or trash. So grab your chaps, it's time to ride off with The Loveless.    Get in Touch! Welcome back to the GoodTrash GenreCast! This week, your favorite film analysis podcast finally discusses of one today's most intriguing directors, M. Night Shyamalan. That's right, we go full boar into spooky scares and twisting turns as we discuss The Village. Also, Dalton returned from the outside just in time. And, he brought friend-of-the-show Nick Sanford with him! Wandering The Village In the early 2000s, M. Night, as Nick points out, was THE director to watch. He had massive critical and financial success with Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs. But, The Village marks a turning point. The story takes place in a remote village... Sorry. Ruled by a small council led by Edward Walker (William Hurt), the residents live as many small, rural communities would in the 19th-century. After the loss of a small child, Lucius (Joaquin Phoenix) decides to venture through the forbidden woods into the outside towns to find medicine. The council are worried about the processes of their world being thrown off by outsiders. Couple this with an imminent fear of forrest dwellers, and you've got the makings of a taut thriller. We get into the the film and talk about its re-evaluation after 14 years. Our game consists of us naming our Top 3 Divisive Films. Finally, we purge The Village of its contents. Nick talks at length about the production history of the film. We look into the formalist approach Shymalan brings to the film. The question of the films politics and its engagement with the Bush Administration and 9/11 also rises to the front of our discussion. Briefly, we discuss the film's portrayal of a certain character with intellectual disabilities. Oh no! We've spotted the bad color! Time to go!   Get in Touch! On this week's episode, we take a look at the world's longest commercial, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In a surprising turn of events, Dustin somehow never watched Willy Wonka in his youth. Does the film hit the sweet spot? Or, will this much candy give us a stomach ache? A Tour of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory The cult classic, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, is a black comedy for the ages. Directed by Mel Stuart, this fantasy/musical sees Charlie Bucket, and four others, win golden tickets. These special tickets grant them the privilege of visiting the mysterious Wonka chocolate factory. Once inside, the children and their guests soon learn Willy Wonka is much more than simply eccentric. We're making an effort here at GoodTrash to diversify, not only in the directors that we choose, but also the age of the films we choose. We admit we like to get stuck in the 90s and 2000s, so we're going to try and reach farther back occasionally. On this week's show, we Recast Willy Wonka in an effort to erase the Johnny Depp debacle. We then movie into our analysis of Willy Wonka. We talk racism, colonialism, capitalism and many more -isms. Welcome to another edition of your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. On this week's show, we discuss a movie that has come up a whole bunch in GTGC history, Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men. And yes, this is our second Cuaron film this year, but it's totall worth it. On our Princess Mononoke episode, we pondered what movies we had recommended as else or instead suggestions the most. So, with the incredible help of the great Keithan Smith, we got a list together. Looking at the overall list, we wanted to break it down to the movies we had recommended, but hadn't watched for the show yet. Some of the top titles were The Shining, Men in Black, Blade Runner and Children of Men. After a fun Twitter poll, Children of Men was selected by YOU to be next on the show! The Spectacle of Children of Men The 2006 dystopian sci-fi bombed upon release. Telling the story of a bureaucratic worker named Theo (Clive Owen), Children of Men takes us into an eerily familiar near future where infertility has stopped reproduction. On the day that the last person to be born is killed, Theo gets pulled into a rebellious scheme by his activist ex, Julian (Julianne Moore). Julian recruits Theo to help her transport a young girl named Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) to a group called the Human Project. Once the plan goes south, Theo discovers Kee is somehow pregnant. Understanding the full scope of the situation, Theo knows he has to risk it all to get Kee to the Human Project. We are all big fans of Children of Men. But, the film is eerily prescient in 2018. Dustin has a lot for us to unpack on this week's episode, as we talk about globalization, utopia, hope, humanity and long takes. We also play our weekly game. This week? Favorite Cold Opens. It was cinematic cold opens, but Dustin cheated and went to the small screen. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. We bounce back from the mediocrity that was Aeon Flux with a look at 1988's Heathers. But that's not all! We are joined by a special guest this week. GoodTrash's own Frightful Femme Kirsten Therkelson sits down to discuss the film, which she has pegged on Letterboxd as a perfect film. If you think Kirsten has good taste in film, you should listen to her and Dalton discuss her history of film. Class is in Session with Heathers The 1988 cult classic Heathers features Winona Ryder as Veronica. Veronica is a member of the Heathers clique—made up of all girls named Heather. As Veronica grows tired of their bullying antics, she falls into a relationship with JD (Christian Slater). JD is a bit of a bad boy, and when Veronica figuratively exclaims how she wishes the Heathers would just die. JD literally takes her up on the idea. Your favorite film analysis podcast is back to attempt to bring our trademark film analysis to the 2005 adaptation of Æon Flux. Karyn Kusama's (Jennifer's Body, The Invitation) follow up to Girlfight received mostly negative reviews, but does it deserve a re-evaluation? We get to the heart of the matter in this week's episode of the GoodTrash GenreCast. Suiting Up with Æon Flux Based off of an MTV-produced anime that began airing in 1991, Æon Flux is the story of a contract operative who is helping a rebellion take down the authoritarian government, led by Trevor Goodchild (Marton Csokas). The titular character, played by Charlize Theron, develops a more personal stake in the takedown as events progress. During her mission, she begins to encounter a new mystery that will change everything. This week, we do our best to flesh out Æon Flux. We discuss MTV Studios, reincarnation and cloning, and the heavy themes that the film tries to engage with. Hello and welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GoodTrash GenreCast. Your lovable hosts are back this week to go twelve rounds with Creed, Ryan Coogler's sophomore effort after Fruitvale Station. Dalton was very vocal about Fruitvale Station and Creed is an incredible follow up. And of course, all of this was done in celebration of Marvel's Black Panther release. In the Ring with Creed Ryan Coogler's Creed is a sequel/spin-off of the Rocky franchise. Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) is the son of Apollo Creed, Rocky's foe-turned-friend. Although Apollo died before Adonis was born, Adonis has boxing in his blood. With nobody willing to train him on the West Coast, Donnie packs up and goes to Philadelphia in hopes of seeking out Rocky (Stallone). Once there, he and Rocky form a relationship that will test the bonds of friendship and family. Oh, and there's boxing involved. On this week's episode, we kick things off with our game. We talk about Lega-sequels We Want to See. After some fun suggestions, we get down to business and try to offer some Creed analysis. Diving in to Princess Mononoke Princess Mononoke is the 10th feature film from Studio Ghibli, and the fifth to be directed by Miyazaki. It tells the story of Ashikata, the last Emishi prince who is cursed by a demon. He is told to travel to the western lands to search out the Great Forest Spirit in hopes of a cure, but in doing so, he will be exiled from his community. In his journeys, Ashikate encounters San, the Mononoke Hime (Spirit Princess). There is actually a lot more to it than that, it's pretty complex. In this week's episode, we give our quick reviews and then play our game: Movies that Would Make Interesting Anime. We follow this up with round table analysis: discussing the film's complexity, and the use of animation as a mode of storytelling. We then discuss the film's complex themes and Miyazaki's refusal to enter strict black and white territory. Dustin brings up the film's dialogue with nature and spirituality and brings the conversation into the station. Set two years after Thomas Harbor (Redford) discovers the afterlife, a prodigal son named Will (Segel) returns to his family's home. While on route, Will meets Isla (Mara), a troubled drifter. In the year of our Lord, 2004, the world was beginning to turn on the War in Iraq, shadowy organizations were seemingly taking over politics, and the late, great Jonathan Demme released his vision for The Manchurian Candidate.  We Vote for the Manchurian Candidate Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. This week, on the GoodTrash GenreCast, we kick off our Denzel Watch-a-thon, #ABWD—Always Be Watching Denzel. On our Devil in a Blue Dress episode, we realized the GenreCast has long overlooked Denzel. However, we are in the process of remedying that. Over the next few weeks, we will look at films from each part of Denzel's career. We will also look at many of his long time collaborations—Fuqua, Lee, Scott—and we begin with Jonathan Demme. The Manchurian Candidate is based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel of the same name. In 1962, John Frankenheimer directed a version starring Angela Lansbury, Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh. Demme's version follows the same basic plot, but updates it for a modern setting. The film tells the tale of Major Bennett Marco (Washington) and Senator Raymond Shaw (Schreiber) who served together in the Gulf War. Shaw won the Medal of Honor for his heroic exploits, but Marco came home with nightmares. Marco begins to unveil a conspiracy that will rattle the political world. The gang gets together this week to look back at this somewhat overlooked Denzel piece from 2004. After their reviews, the hosts play the weekly game. This week, the game is a discussion of underrated films from great directors. Finally, the team get down to analysis and talk about the timeliness of the film, the political discourse at work and whether the film works as strongly against capitalism as last week's film, Robocop. He discusses the history of the genre and compares and contrasts the narratives as when told through the eyes of males and females. Following our game, we take High Fidelity off the shelf and out of the sleeve to give it a spin on the analysis table.    Dalton kicks things off with a character study of John Cusack's character, Rob. He explains that by casting ourselves as the wounded protagonist in our minds, we often become our own worst enemy. He argues that the film encourages reflection about how we should behave as humans. Caleb looks at Frears' use of music throughout the film. He looks closely at the connection between music and memory. He argues that Frears' is using the audience's relationship with these songs to trigger a nostalgia trip. Dustin takes the analysis home as he brings up two ideas. After hearing our Back to the Movies review, DC comic book enthusiast and founder of the 1988 project, Shawn Curtis reached out to defend the movie and argue the merits of Batman vs Superman against the critics. Caleb sits down and talks to Shawn a little bit about his history with the characters before things heat up and the two discuss stand alone films vs multimedia driven universes, Batman's history using weapons to kill, Darkseid's impending arrival in the DCCU, and Ben Affleck's success as the dark knight. The BvS Fans Strike Back! It is the dawn of a new era, Dear Listener. The era of the Randomizer AB1700 which holds the fate of this show in its hands. On general months, the Randomizer will be used to fill out programming except in the case of Patron or Host picks. Each of the hosts has selected a number of titles to place in the Randomizer. That being said, the Randomizer has given us Cloud Atlas to kick of April. That's right, we take a look at the underrated Wachowski/Tykwer cross-generational sci-fi film lead by Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in a number of roles. To go along with this weeks movie and the vast amount of Tom Hanks, we decide to highlight our favorite Tom Hanks films. As the show continues, we move into analysis and Dalton gets the ball rolling. This week, Dalton brings up the idea of the flexibility of race and gender; discussing how we are all people, and how the Wachowski Sisters deal with those ideas of humanity, soul, and personhood. Caleb tags in and builds off of Dalton's analysis; however, he introduces the idea of stories and they transcend time, space, and culture and can impact generations to come. Alex takes the floor after Caleb and discusses the power of music. This is a very art appreciation heavy show as Alex discusses the power of music, and analyzes how music works both in the diegesis and non-diegesis of the film. Dustin, being Dustin closes out the Analysis section by bringing up questions of philosophy and looking at it through a Nietzschian lens. And there you have it dear listener, hit play and then go forth and tell your children to tell their children about the GoodTrash GenreCast.  Cloud Atlas time stamps 00:45 - Welcome and Intros 16:30 - The Game - Favorite Tom Hanks Movies 24:51 - Analysis 43:28 - Shelf or Trash: Else or Instead 50:58 - Social Media Contacts  52:14 - Wrap Up and Announce Next Weeks Film

Hello dear listener! The Brig-A-Thon rolls on this week as we take on Summer Wars. That's right, the anime marathon keeps on keepin' on as Alex, Caleb, and Dustin sit around and discuss the movie with generally positive feelings. If you're interested in picking a marathon for the GoodTrash GenreCast then head over to Patreon for more information.  This week, after giving our initial reviews, we discuss Saturday Morning Cartoon Mashups that we would love to see. That's right, we'd be just as excited for an X-Men '92/TMNT crossover as you would be. Caleb cranks it to 11 for his choices and a great deal of fun is had by all.  Finally, we move into the portion of the show that you all came for; we get down to business and break open Summer Wars to find out what's going on behind the firewall of Oz. Alex kicks things off as she uses her education to great affect, talking e-governance and government policy and how Summer Wars takes a look at all of that. Caleb takes the reigns next to talk about Eastern Religion and the Internet. He discusses how the internet has taken philosophies from Shinto and Buddhism and taken them world wide, for the better. Dustin then takes things home to talk about the influence of Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story) on Summer Wars; this leads him to discuss the integration of art house style on anime.  So, there you have it dear listener, the connection is strong, and we're getting connected. So why don't you find the network in your wifi list and join us on this interweb adventure.  Summer Wars Time Stamps 00:45 - Welcome and Introductions 02:15 - Synopsis and Quick Reviews 09:28 - The Game: Saturday Morning Mashups 15:44 - Analysis 35:12 - Shelf/Trash - Else/Instead  40:19 - Wrap up, Social Media, Announce Next Week's Film

In this week's Back to the Movies we're joined by guest host Dalton Stuart from the GoodTrash Genrecast to review the Rocky spin-off Creed written/directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. After being away for nearly 10 years since the 2006 nostalia pic Rocky Balboa, Ryan Coogler is making an attempt to retell the Rocky story for a new generation by unveiling the rise of Apollo Creed's illegitimate son Adonis as he enters into the world of boxing. After leaving home to pursue his passion to fight, Creed turns to the Italian Stallion Rocky Balboa to train him up to be a true pro fighter. We bypass this week's news to dedicate our entire episode to talking about our history with the Rocky franchise as well as our rocky expectations going into the movie. We discuss the use of race in the film, the formula of the sports inspirational film genre, and whether or not Creed succeeds in renewing the nearly 30 year old franchise. Does Creed give Rocky a run for his money?
