Matty Dalrymple talks with Rene Gutteridge about THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF A SCENE, including how to identify the purpose of every scene before you write it, where to enter a scene for maximum impact, how to balance propulsive moments with the quieter character-development scenes your story also needs, and why every element in a scene—from minor characters to setting—should be doing more than one job. Matty Dalrymple talks with Rene Gutteridge about WRITING THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER, including how real-life dramatic events translate differently to film and to fiction, why interiority is the novelist's greatest advantage over screenwriters, how to slow down a high-intensity scene so readers feel every decision, choosing the small unexpected details that make a scene feel real, why every chapter needs both a purpose and a hook, and why your job as a writer is to make your character's life miserable until the very last page. In this year-end tradition, Nathan Chandler welcomes back filmmaker and film-obsessive Mark Blitch to break down their favorite movies of 2025. The two recap a year filled with more theater trips, more indie discoveries (including DeadCenter highlights) and a few titles they still haven't caught up with yet. They count down their Top 10 lists, compare overlap and dig into the year's biggest standouts — from the darkly funny Friendship and the wildly entertaining The Naked Gun to the ambitious horror puzzle box Weapons. Then they debut a new segment: 2025 superlatives, including Surprise of the Year, Funniest Movie, Favorite Dialogue, Favorite Scene and Favorite Performance — with plenty of laughs, side quests and passionate takes along the way.
In today's episode, we sit down with former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin for a powerful conversation about his book Dead Center — a book he describes as both a memoir and a manifesto for bringing common sense back to American politics. Manchin shares his concerns about where the Democratic Party is headed. We also talk about why he believes the “center” is where solutions are born, what it means to put people before party, and how respect, responsibility, and compassion can break through the bitterness and tribalism dividing our nation. This episode suggests that there is hope that still exists for a healthier, more unified political future. You may not agree with all of his politics – but there is much to be said about puttingaside “sound bites” and having real conversations. Former Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) joins Michael to discuss his memoir, "Dead Center: In Defense of Common Sense." Together, they explore the deep divides in American politics, what it means to 'lead from the middle,' and why Manchin believes the center is the only path forward for the country. From his candid reflections on the Democratic Party's evolution to his efforts to build bipartisan cooperation through his “Americans Together” initiative, Manchin opens up about lessons learned in Washington and what he got wrong—like aspects of the Affordable Care Act. The conversation ranges from party polarization to possible paths for independent candidates and the future of term limits—all grounded in Manchin's belief that “if you can't change your mind, you can't change anything.” Original air date 21 October 2025. The book was published on 16 September 2025. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
oin former U.S. Senator Joe Manchin for a timely and candid online-only conversation about his maverick career in government, crossing party lines, and addressing the dysfunction at the heart of our politics—centered around his new memoir, Dead Center: In Defense of Common Sense. At a time when our country feels more divided than ever, Senator Manchin is inviting Americans back to the center—where solutions are possible, principles still matter, and leadership starts with listening. From the coal fields of Farmington, West Virginia, to some of the highest-stakes decisions in the U.S. Senate, Manchin has never wavered from his core beliefs: fiscal responsibility, social compassion, and putting country before party. In Dead Center—part memoir, part manifesto—he makes a passionate case for a new, solutions-oriented politics rooted in common sense. Reflecting on the decisions that shaped him as a leader and public servant, he shares never-before-told stories from inside the Senate and the White House, along with fresh insight into how government can deliver real results for the American people. It's a reminder that leadership still matters, character still counts, and common sense should never go out of style. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
A psychiatrist gets a new patient that was dead a few minutes ago. He seems kinda weird. Is there something spooky going on? Yes.
Meghan and Miranda open with the most-talked-about moment from Charlie Kirk's memorial in Arizona, Erica Kirk publicly forgiving her husband's killer, and what that act of faith and restraint means for a grieving movement and a fractured country. They also unpack the media's reaction, the surge of young churchgoers some listeners are seeing, and whether the Republican Party is entering a more openly Christian era. Then Senator Joe Manchin joins to discuss his new book, Dead Center in Defense of Common Sense, why he chose life on a D.C. houseboat, and the lost art of bipartisan hospitality (yes, he used to host mixed-party dinners: four Dems, four Republicans). Manchin gets candid on closed primaries, the rise of independents, border security vs. legal immigration, putting assets in a blind trust, resisting “party-line” votes, and the McCain/Lieberman model of political courage. He also shares personal stories, from carrying refrigerators up walk-ups as a teen to perfect Italian meatballs (veal/pork/beef) and the history of Harpers Ferry. Plus audience Q&A: a dad on introducing his 16-year-old to public life (and flip phones), a New Yorker on how the press misunderstands Christian worship, and a sober look at rhetoric vs. responsibility after political violence.
From his roots in West Virginia to his pivotal role in some of Washington’s fiercest battles, Joe Manchin built a career on bucking partisan lines and pushing for pragmatism over ideology. Get ready to get inspired! Our next gen of Native filmmakers are here and showing us how its done. We met filmmakers Sabrina Saleha and Littlebear Sanchez at imagineNative and deadCenter film fests, and just had to have them on to share their experiences as young Indigenous filmmakers going through Sundance, imagineNative, and even Tisch. Let's decolonize filmmaking together!
Being Native can be complicated. Often we are confronted with challenges from both within our communities and from outside our communities, and this week's episode looks at our filmmaker perspectives on their stories they tell.Amanda Erickson brings true crime producing experience to this beautifully crafted doc about a missing sister, and the struggles of those who remain behind in "She Cried That Day", and our friend Joey Clift joins again for a look at his animated short "POW!" that is taking the film fest circuit by storm. You may even hear host Angela's voice in it!We're always thankful for the quality of talent that deadCenter Film Festival brings to Oklahoma and want to wish them Happy 25th Birthday. We look forward to many more years of great Indigenous content with them.
This week we catch up with deadCenter filmmakers Sabrina Saleha, Loren Waters, and Kyle Kauwika Harris as they screen their films at the world-famous festival, celebrating 25 years!Loren's "Tiger" debuted at Sundance and has been taking the world by storm. Sabrina is multi-talented actor, writer, and director, and can be seen in The Cleaning Lady and Barry. Kyle's debut feature film Reverence was a labor of love for the Oklahoma filmmaker.
Hello, you absolute freaks. We got y'all a bonus episode in case you have a long weekend lined up. A few weeks ago, Dalton moderated the Q&A for the Midnight Shorts block at deadCenter and got his wig flipped all the way around by a surreal and challenging short film, Jeff. Fortunately, the film's writer and director, Julia Hebner, was at the fest with some answers, but that, of course, only led to more questions. When it turned out our beloved David Lynch was one of Julia's guys, it was all the more reason to sit down for a proper interview. Be warned, Jeff is not for the faint of heart—proper subject matter warning in the intro.
Dalton and Dustin are once again joined by OKC's one and only Frightful Femme, Kirsten Therkelson, to cover the final two days of deadCenter 2025. Topics include Okie documentary Drowned Land, as well as the much talked about short film, Jeff.

Happy Monday! Emma speaks with Tracy Rosenthal, writer and organizer, to discuss her recent book Abolish Rent: How Tenants Can End The Housing Crisis, co-authored with Leonardo Vilchis. Then, she speaks with Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the state of play in Canadian politics as the elections inch closer. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's massive gutting of the FAA, another plane crash in the US, Musk's access to IRS data, DOGE's privacy violations, Trump's attacks on the NPS, HUD, and IRS, Trump's NLRB, Utah's ban on collective bargaining for public sector employees, Hamas' release of hostages, Trump's support for Israel, Trump's threat to education funding, Trump's request to Romania, and major flooding in Kentucky, before watching Mark Levine get Mike Johnson to fully bend the knee to the incel Musk regime. Tracy Rosenthal then joins, briefly touching on her introduction to organizing and her evolution to helping found the LA Tenants Union in 2015 before diving deeper into the massive growth of the renter population (amid dropping homeownership rates) to the point of producing tenant-majority cities. Expanding on this, Rosenthal and Emma unpack the importance of tenant organizing as a source of community power amid the increasing immiseration of the Trump regime, walking through the role landlords played in bolstering his many conspiracies around crime and immigration, and touching on the insane wealth the industry generates. After expanding on the complete normalization of homelessness under capitalism, Tracy steps back to parse the essential role land ownership played in the founding of the US, with the practice of “eviction” central to our practices of ethnic cleansing and playing an important role in aligning white settlers with the state, while the concept of the vote was entirely tethered to a white man's claims to land. Tracy and Emma also assess the insanity of the rent boom over the last decade, with millions putting a majority of their income into keeping a roof over their head, wrapping up the interview with a discussion on what tenant organizing looks like and the importance of getting involved. Luke Savage then joins, jumping right into the recent boost Canada's Trudeau-less Liberal Party has gotten at the hands of Trump's nativist tirades in recent weeks, stepping back to briefly assess the rise and fall of Justin Trudeau from liberal icon to voter anathema, before digging deeper into the rise of the Conservative party over the last couple of election cycles amid COVID and a major Cost of Living crisis, and assessing the strength of their lead before Trump assumed office. After walking through some of the major MAGA-esque players involved in the rise of the Tories, and why the majority of them have acquiesced to Trump's attacks, Savage and Emma wrap up the free half by exploring the likely successor to Trudeau as liberal leader, and what that will mean for a (potentially) impending election. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the insanity of Josh Shapiro's pledge to “work with Republicans” to “aggressively cut taxes,” watches Chris Dols, an Army Corps engineer and union leader, unpack Elon's attack on federal workers, and Jim from Portland calls in to update us on his ongoing graphic novel Kickstarter “F*ck Billionaires.” Hakeem Jeffries says Eric Adams should have the chance to “make his case” to New Yorkers that being in Trump's pocket is okay, actually, Mike Gallagher reveals the reality behind the US TikTok ban, JD Vance pisses off some Germans, and Helen from the Twin Cities discusses debate tactics. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with writer Luke Savage, writer based in Toronto, author of The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History, to discuss the current state of Canadian politics. Then, she speaks with Jeff Stein, White House economics reporter at The Washington Post, to discuss his recent multi-part series on economic sanctions for the Post entitled "The Money War." First, Emma runs through updates on the GOP's continuing dysfunction over their spending bill, Trump's prosecution in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal's major report on Biden staffers' extensive work to downplay and hide the state of Biden's mental decline since 2019, the nomination of Pete Hegseth, Amazon teamsters' strike, South Carolina's attack on Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood, Israeli's continuing offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, the repatriation of the final inmates in Guantanamo Bay, and the confirmed appearance Bird Flu in the US, before diving a little deeper into “President Musk's” public pressure campaign to get GOP Congresspeople in line with his spending plan. Luke Savage then joins, diving right into the dwindling support for Trudeau's administration in the wake of a weak, nationalist-oriented response to Trump's threat of tariffs against Canada, unpacking the growing dissent from within his coalition before Savage and Emma briefly contrast his response to Trump's threats with that from the US' other neighbor-under-threat in Mexico's President Sheinbaum. Stepping back, Luke examines the rise and fall of Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada, coming to power by leading a major win in 2015 and becoming a hyper-public anti-Trump resistance figure in the process, only for growing economic issues coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic alongside a poor choice by Trudeau to call for snap elections in 2021 putting the Liberal Party in an insecure situation and forcing a deal with the NDP social democrats. Moving forward in the story, Savage walks Emma through the lingering struggles Liberals have faced in the wake of this deal, with their (and Trudeau's, in particular) refusal to acknowledge the ongoing cost of living crisis and the failures of their economic agenda significantly dragging down NDP's public standing to the point of pulling out of the deal this past September, issues capitalized on by a Conservative Party that is, at the bare minimum, willing to recognize the issues facing the Canadian electorate. After expanding on the role of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, his success in hiding his unpopular faux-populist crypto-libertarianism behind direct, issues-based communication, and the pretty clear parallels with Biden and Democrats' recent failures in the 2024 election, Savage wraps up by tackling Canada's dearth of an actual system to remove someone like Trudeau from power, and how this situation could (and is likely to) develop. Jeff Stein then joins, jumping right into his extensive research at the Washington Post into the explosion of the role of sanctions in US foreign policy, and the vast material impact they have on local populations, first outlining how this policy proliferated in the wake of the serious backlash to US military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan – with Joe Biden taking Trump's expansion of the sanction regime to an entirely new level after Russia's invasion of Ukraine – and how it aligns with the increasing power of the executive branch. Stepping back, Stein walks Emma through the role sanctions play in avoiding both military AND diplomatic intervention on the global stage, despite minimal evidence of their efficacy, and the growing worry inside of government of their long-term impacts with limited short-term benefits, before they wrap up with the myriad material issues that have arisen from the expansion of the US sanction regime, with devastating effects on the abused and exploited populations that these sanctions are ostensibly issued in response to, alongside the (less devastating) unforeseen financial costs to US taxpayers. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder as they do a deep dive into the recent Wall Street Journal report tracing Biden's staffers' extensive efforts – beginning in 2019 – to hide and disguise Biden's mental decline from the public, before touching on the continuing cult of senility around Biden. Matty Dalrymple talks with Rene Gutteridge about WHAT AUTHORS SHOULD NOT LEARN FROM MOVIES, including how crucial point of view and inner monologue are in novel writing compared to the visual storytelling required in movies; how writers can mistakenly adopt a “director's” approach, leading to overly descriptive and less engaging prose; and delve the science behind the different brain functions of hobbyist writers versus professional authors. We touch on how conciseness in movies contrasts with the depth needed in novels, using examples like Dennis Lehane's MYSTIC RIVER, and discuss practical strategies for maintaining engaging pacing in fiction without losing substance. Then they take a look at Jake Allen's viability as a goalie streamer after his impressive shutout of Edmonton, and Lewis takes a stand against trading Ovi, as recommended on the megashow. On this episode I chatted with Amy and Donna about the movie Cricket. An emotional movie shot here in OKC. Taking the audience to a safe but powerful place. A place to grieve with others, letting you know it's ok to hurt and to feel. It takes you to a place in your own life where you can feel your own personal grief. I encourage you to watch this incredible movie. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20416978/ https://www.filmmakersranch.com/ Huge thank you to our sponsors.
