The price tag for the rights to make the two sequels are said to have cost Netflix $469 million. According to Hollywood Reporter, “The pact gave Johnson immense creative control, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. He doesn't have to take notes from the streamer. Hello and welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. We're back to the trashy basics with a look at the 1988 Cannon production of Bloodsport. The film marks Jean-Claude Van Damme's first starring turn. Is it lovable campy fun? Or should it have met its fate in the kumite. Battling Bloodsport 1988's Bloodsport tells the story of Frank Dux (pronounced Dukes). Frank (JCVD) is a special ops agent who goes AWOL to battle in a mysterious tournament known as the kumite. While on the lam, Frank meets a journalist trying to get the real story on the kumite, befriends a loveable ogre of a man and stares down a monster of a competitor named Chong Li, who isn't afraid to kill for the win. The best part? All of this is based on a true story. On this week's show, we rundown our Favorite Cinematic Sports Tournaments. We then get down to business. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. This week, our Shocktober marathon of one-word titled films continues with a look at the French/Belgium production, Raw.  It Gets Raw Every Shocktober sees at least one artsy horror film rear its head. When the time came, we decided to tackle this foreign production that has been making waves since its festival run. Raw, or Grave, is a horror-thriller from director Julia Ducournau. Justine (Marillier) is a vegetarian and first-year student at veterinary school. She must undergo a series of hazing rituals from older students—including her sister, Alexia (Rumpf). Justine is forced to eat meat—after which, the hunger for flesh only grows. Raw is a tough watch. But, it offers a lot to digest. The film is multilayered. We don't even get to hit everything, to our chagrin. We do talk vegetarianism, sexual awakenings and we carefully tread into discussing eating disorders. However, we wish we could have hit on hazing and bullying in the digital age, general desire and more. Spoiler alert, we may have liked this one quite a bit. As always, before we get down to analysis, we give quick reviews and play a game. This week, we talk about "Memorable Body Horror Sequences". It felt like a fitting pairing. After all of this though, we decide whether Raw is shelve-able, or if it is simply scrap-able. So, how do you like your meal? Well done or still bleeding? Tune in and then let us know! The sun sets on #ABWD as we discuss Denzel's supernatural thriller Fallen (1998). And though our time with Denzel draws to an end, we use this opportunity to kickstart Shocktober! We've Fallen and We Can't Get Up On this week's episode of the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media, your film analysis friends discuss Fallen. Fallen quietly crosses genres, moving from procedural to supernatural thriller to suspense over the course of two hours. It is the story of Detective John Hobbes (Washington)—who is coming off the capture of a notorious serial killer (Koreas). However, after Reese's execution, the string of murders continues. Hobbes must figure out if there is a copycat on the loose, or if something more sinister is taking place. Fallen is a movie that has come up time and time again, usually from Dustin. We also knew it was perfect for the GenreCast, and it worked as a bridge into Shocktober—which kicks off next week. Before we analyze Fallen, we rank the movies of #ABWD. Some of the movies from this marathon were first time watches for the hosts, so we took this time to reflection the Denzel stories we've watched over the last few weeks (including Devil in a Blue Dress).  Our analysis of Fallen sees a discussion of the apocalyptic thriller that ran rampant through the late 90s. We also discuss the idea of the unreliable narrator and the narrative constructs of Fallen, and whether they work through the end. Arthur also has a lot to say about the intertextuality of the film and how that works in the film's favor at the end. Now, let us tell you about the time we almost lost a podcast. Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. This week, the Denzel train keeps rolling as we wander the desert in The Book of Eli.  We Read from the Book of Eli  As #ABWD continues, we move into the Old Man Action Hero phase of Denzel's career. Some would argue that the phase begins with Man on Fire, and they wouldn't be wrong. But, we already talked about a Tony Scott film, and The Book of Eli is the definition of a GoodTrash film. The story centers on Eli (Washington) who is trekking across a post-apocalyptic America. He feels he has been supernaturally tasked to deliver a book to the West Coast. With the help of Solara (Kunis), Eli takes on raiders, cannibals and the power-hungry Carnegie (Oldman) on his journey in the wilderness. This week, Arthur, Dalton and Dustin gather around to discuss the appeal of the Old Man Action cycle. There is an in-depth discussion of the evolution of the cycle as well as thoughts as to why it appeals to audiences. Dalton brings up formalist questions about color palette and visual style. And then, Dustin takes the discussion in the natural direction you would expect—theology. Welcome to another edition of your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. We continue #ABWD with Denzel's third collaboration with director Spike Lee, He Got Game.  We find out that Denzel, well, He Got Game   It is important to note that collaboration is important to Denzel's career. 18 movies in Denzel's filmography come from the combined efforts of 5 directors—Edward Zwick, Tony Scott, Antoine Fuqua, Jonathan Demme and Spike Lee. He Got Game is the third film in the Lee and Washington lineup. It follows Mo Better Blues and Malcolm X. He Got Game is a look into the life of Jesus Shuttlesworth (Ray Allen). Jesus is an all-star high school basketball star. He is also the number one recruit in the nation.  Jake (Washington) is a convicted murderer, and the father of Jesus. They don't have the best relationship. Jake is let out for a few days to persuade Jesus to sign with the Governor's alma mater in exchange of a shortened sentence. The gang have a good discussion in regards to He Got Game. Race, coding, exploitation of athletes and sports are all key topics of discussion. But, before they talk all of that analysis, they play a game. This week, the game is an examination of Athletes turned Actors. Each host highlights some of their favorite athletes to make the jump to Hollywood. Once it is all said and done though, everyone decides whether He Got Game is trash, or deserving of a spot on the shelf. So, get in the paint and drive it to the net. In the year of our Lord, 2004, the world was beginning to turn on the War in Iraq, shadowy organizations were seemingly taking over politics, and the late, great Jonathan Demme released his vision for The Manchurian Candidate.  We Vote for the Manchurian Candidate Welcome back to your favorite film analysis podcast, the GenreCast from GoodTrash Media. This week, on the GoodTrash GenreCast, we kick off our Denzel Watch-a-thon, #ABWD—Always Be Watching Denzel. On our Devil in a Blue Dress episode, we realized the GenreCast has long overlooked Denzel. However, we are in the process of remedying that. Over the next few weeks, we will look at films from each part of Denzel's career. We will also look at many of his long time collaborations—Fuqua, Lee, Scott—and we begin with Jonathan Demme. The Manchurian Candidate is based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel of the same name. In 1962, John Frankenheimer directed a version starring Angela Lansbury, Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh. Demme's version follows the same basic plot, but updates it for a modern setting. The film tells the tale of Major Bennett Marco (Washington) and Senator Raymond Shaw (Schreiber) who served together in the Gulf War. Shaw won the Medal of Honor for his heroic exploits, but Marco came home with nightmares. Marco begins to unveil a conspiracy that will rattle the political world. The gang gets together this week to look back at this somewhat overlooked Denzel piece from 2004. After their reviews, the hosts play the weekly game. This week, the game is a discussion of underrated films from great directors. Finally, the team get down to analysis and talk about the timeliness of the film, the political discourse at work and whether the film works as strongly against capitalism as last week's film, Robocop. So, dear listener, tune in now to find out which of our hosts is a sleeper cell, and which ones are just sleepy. Welcome back dear listeners! We are your new cure for everything you need. We are now "They". You can thank Patreon Supporter Daniel Austin for choosing Spike Jonze's 2013 sci-fi drama, Her. Because of his continued financial support of GoodTrash Media, Daniel was able to select a movie for us to do on the network. So, the GoodTrash GenreCast took up the challenge and brought Her to the table for a deeper look.  This Patreon-sponsored episode is full of laughs, and we have a lot of fun with the game this week. We take turns pitching high-concept films about personal accessories. This leads to many silly ideas and discussions. We then dive into business with a good old fashioned round table discussion. The gang sits around to talk about personhood and A.I., the human void, love as a consumer product, and much, much more. We were very grateful to get a chance to talk about Her. Typically it wouldn't fall under our mission statement, but once and a while (and thanks to built-in cheats) we get a chance to look at the "person who wouldn't go to prom with us" as Dustin used to say. So, thank you dearly Daniel Austin. This week's Back to the Movies throws us back to 1980s nostalgia once again as we sit down to review the remake(?), reboot(?), redo(?) of Ghostbusters!  Arthur was so excited about this movie that he actually decided to cancel his podcasting career and start busting those ghosts with the Funky Soul Retrievers. Instead, I'm joined again by Alexandra Bohannon from The GoodTrash Genrecast /  The Film Syllabus to discuss whether or not the all women led Ghostbusters delivers another classic. We're no strangers to the Ghostbusters here on GoodTrash Media. Back in the early days of the GoodTrash Genrecast, we even did a full analysis with guest Nick Sanford episode talking marshmallow man and all. The original 1984 Ghostbusters is no doubt a beloved classic by fans. So beloved, in fact, that there's been a very vocal group of fans who have voiced their qualms with an all ladies cast. In this episode, Alexandra and I discuss the importance of women representation on the big screen before getting into the nitty gritty about what does and does not work about the latest take on the Ghostbusters. Hello again listeners, it's time for one of those rare times of the year when we head to the arthouse cinema. This week we're heading Back to the Movies to check out GoodTrash Media's highly anticipated film The Neon Demon from director Nicolas Winding Refn. This week Arthur takes another break in order to pursue his modeling career which means we had to call in the hosts of The Film Syllabus, Dustin Sells and Alexandra Bohannon, to join this more analysis driven review. We're also joined a first time guest, University of Oklahoma T.A. and aspiring comic book PhD, Kenneth Kimbrough. If you've been a long time listener of the GoodTrash Genrecast, you'll know we're all undeniable Drive apologists. It's pseudo-80s aesthetic, slick soundtrack, and western genre tropes made it an instant GoodTrash essential. Long time listeners will also know the Genrecast wasn't in favor of 2012's Only God Forgives, but we've been anxiously awaiting Refn's next project ever since. After a particularly long hiatus, the director is finally back with The Neon Demon, a film that follows an aspiring young model as she rises in the ranks of the Los Angeles fashion industry. The film stars Elle Fanning and features a supporting cast of Jena Malone, Christina Hendricks, and Keanu Reeves. This is a very spoiler heavy and more analysis driven review, but fear not! We still have a spoiler free review and recommendation before getting really into the weeds about what's going on in this flick. What did you think of Nicolas Winding Refn's latest flick? Lauren worked on several Oklahoma features including Army of Frankensteins, The Posthuman Project, and Rudderless before moving to Los Angeles where she is currently working on Dark Hours: Roxanna amongst other projects. In this deadCenter follow up conversation, Alex and I talk to Lauren about the casting process and her experience preparing for dual roles in Electric Nostalgia. Lauren Analla. Welcome back Trashmaniacs! In the wake of our deadCENTER coverage, we return to give you a scathing look at 2006's crime thriller Running Scared, starring the man, Paul Walker. It's a fun episode as everyone rips apart Dalton's host pick. This could also be an early frontrunner for The Hebrew Hammer at our annual awards show.  We round up the usual suspects this week to pick Running Scared apart on the analysis table. But before we do that, we play our game. This week we discuss movies that we only finished watching because we were recording a podcast over them. There are a lot of callbacks to early episodes, as well as some of our more recent offerings. After we have a few laughs here, we finally get down to business. Dalton gets things going by discussing the film's look at redemptive violence and toxic masculinity. He debates the film's stance on violence and what, if anything, it's trying to say. The show then grows very somber as Alexandra presents a very personal and emotional reading of the film's commentary on gun control - it is considerably more powerful in light of the events in Orlando which happened on the morning of this record. Dustin brings the discussion home by bringing up the works of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer in relation to mass culture. He presents their work in light of commercial cinema and how it reinforces societal ideology.  There you have it Dear Listener, Running Scared - a fine example of why we do what we do. How do you describe a film editor whose career spans decades? Who has worked with the biggest names in the industry? She described how she broke into making movies after receiving her English B.A. (like most of GoodTrash Media). She also talked about her experiences with working on E.T. with Stephen Spielberg and John Williams, working Bryan Cranston, and many more big names of past and present. Her genuine self shone through, as it was clear that she retained her Oklahoma Spirit, despite working with some of the film greats of our time. Littleton also graciously granted me an interview after her panel. We discussed how it is being a woman in the male-dominated film industry, the best advice for people wanting to break into the film industry in crew, and how to be a better sound designer. Also, it just so happened that Nick Sanford and Andrew MacDonald from the local indie feature The Harvesters were hanging out as well. Sanford regularly stated on the inaugural episode of The People's History of Film how he is in love with E.T., as it is his favorite movie. Both Sanford and McDonald ask some excellent questions from the movie making perspective. Their questions gave keen insight into her editing processes and gave invaluable advice to up-and-coming film makers. If you have any questions about Littleton and her experiences, we can release the raw audio file of a portion of the the panel. If you still cannot get enough film editing stories, check out a book she's featured in entitled First Cut: Conversations with Film Editors edited/compiled by Gabrielle Oldham.

Dalton then gives us a socio-historic history lesson as he discusses the Reconstruction period following the Civil War and some of the misconceptions that are presented and encouraged by Wild Wild West of that time. Kirsten then gives us a run down of cult cinema, and discusses how Wild Wild West misses the mark in terms of finding a place within the realm of cult cinema. Dustin finally takes us home by piggy backing off of Alex's reading as he discusses the star as auteur and how that helps us understand film a bit more.  While the movie didn't perform well, it was a perfect jumping off point for a plethora of analysis this week. So, get ready dear listener, your hand better be on that play button... Leonardo DiCaprio has brought his A-game in his continued crusade against the academy with The Revenant. Before doing our full review, Back to the Movies talks Leo's chances and our reactions to the 2016 Oscar nominations. The Revenant may have garnered an unprecedented 12 nominations, but GoodTrash Media favorite Mad Mad: Fury Road rides close behind with 10 of its own. Does George Miller stand a chance at winning an Oscar at 70 or does Iñárritu have his Birdman victory lap ain the bag? With The Martian and The Big Short bringing an even tighter competition, Caleb and Arthur throw in their early predictions for who is taking home the gold. Last week was a rough time in pop culture after the loss of the Die Hard and Harry Potter star Alan Rickman. Back to the Movies takes pause to remember the impact and importance of Alan Rickman on their lives. This week's review is The Revenant from academy award winning writer/director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film follows Hugh(Leonardo DiCaprio) as he seeks revenge on John Fitzgerald(Tom Hardy) for killing his son and leaving him for dead. The film has Leo performing some of the most difficult acting any performer could ever dream of including fishing in ice water, eating raw bison, and sleeping inside a gutted horse. Iñárritu hasn't pulled a single punch when it comes to authenticity, but does it really make for a great film? Arthur and Caleb their opinions on whether or not bleeding for an art actually makes great art. What else is there to say?
