The sequel is almost too popular to fail, but does it stack up to the surprise of the first film?To answer the question, I'm joined by recurring guest host Laron Chapman to review Guardians of the Galaxy and discuss our current feelings on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the state of superhero films. In this week's Back to the Movies, we're taking on the double feature you'd absolutely never consider if it wasn't January in our head to head reviews of the 2017 Best Picture nominee Lion followed by our spoiler filled talk on M. Night Shyamalan's recent box office hit, Split. We start the show off by tackling the critically acclaimed Australian drama, Lion. The film stars Dev Patel as Saroo Breirley, a man who was seperated from his family in India as a boy and was eventually adopted by Australian parents. 25 years after being separated, Saroo sets out to find his hometown in hopes that he can reunite with his mother and brother. The film spends a great deal of time reflecting on Saroo's struggle to find synthesis between his heritage and more privileged upbringing in a well to do Australian family. With so much at stake, it's hard to believe the whole film revolves around a guy surfing through google maps. It's a nominated film, but the question remains--can the film deliver a compelling character piece? In the second half of today's show, we take a look at the number one movie at the U.S. box office, Split. Ever since his critical and box office flops The Happening and Avatar: The Last Airbender, Shyamalan has struggled to get out of career jail. After the warmer reception to last year's The Visit and the success of Split, it looks like he just might have the momentum he needs to return to acclaim. Does he pull it off? Our review is very spoiler heavy and we highly recommend seeing the movie before listening to the second half of today's show. Lion / Split Timestamps4:50 - Lion Review20:17 - Lion Spoilers45:12 - Split Review51:21 - Split Spoilers1:21:45 - Tease for next week

No, you didn't read that synopsis--this movie is bonkers.Yoga Hoser's has a fascinating story and one day, it may in fact have a documentary detailing exactly how a movie this bizarre could get made. This week Arthur and I taking another trip to animation land as we go Back to the Movies to review the stop motion animated Kubo and the Two Strings. The movie features stunning animation from Laika Studio who is known for Coraline, Paranorman, and Boxtrolls. What sets Kubo apart from the others is its distinct influence from Japanese woodblock art and the Japanese cultural folklore the film draws from. Before delving into the review, we continue our new segment where your hosts talk about what we've been watching. This week Arthur has been re-watching lots of Scrubs and remembering the glory of Zach Braff in his earlier years. I mix things up by talking about my most recent adventures watching Rick & Morty and checking out Mamoru Hosoda's The Boy and the Beast. In our review of Kubo and the Two Strings, Arthur and I talk about the film's theme of family and non-violence. The film may have a pretty straight forward plot, but the film does a surprising amount of work into reinforcing the larger moral of the story. We weigh Kubo against the odds of The Little Prince, Zootopia, and Finding Dory to see how it stacks up.   Like what you hear? Help us produce even more stuff by supporting us on Patreon

This week's Back to the Movies continues to bring us down from the loud and furious flash that resembles nothing of summer 2016 by taking a look at a lesser anticipated film titled Hell or High Water. This week's podcast is co-hosted by recurring guest host Dalton Stuart of The People's History of Film who swears he didn't know this movie was made just for him.Hell or High Water follows Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Gil Birmingham in a game of cat and mouse between a pair of Texas Rangers as they investigate a string of bank robberies. At this point this modern western sounds like an age old story, but Hell or High Water doesn't just execute genre, but instead twists it into a far more ambiguous tale.Dalton and I talk about the film's portrayal of West Texas and Southwest Oklahoma and it's look at of complexities of fighting poverty. It's a real change of pace from most of the films that have been released this summer and I think you'll be quite surprised by the result. Like what you hear? This week we're going off script as we ditch the planned Pete's Dragon review in favor of something a bit more of a wild card with the Netflix release of The Little Prince. Arthur and I talk about our experience(or lack thereof) with the original 1943 children's novella. The original novella is the fourth most-translated book in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. It's been translated into more than 250 languages and has sold more than 140 copies worldwide. Its popularity is so big, in fact, we're a bit surprised it took long this long to make it to the big screen. The film was originally slated for release through Paramount in March, but was mysteriously dropped from distribution less than a week before its scheduled opening. Thankfully, Netflix came to save the day of another classic from the trenches of obscurity. The Little Prince's film adaptation is a sort of quasi-sequel to the novella that follows the crashed pilot in his old age. It sports a killer cast including Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, James Franco, Benicio Del Toro, Paul Giamatti, Ricky Gervais, and Albert Brooks. It's partially animated as a stop motion picture which leads to some of the most beautiful visuals you'll see all year.It has all of the makings of a classic that GoodTrash is all about. Arthur and I weigh in to decide how well the film works and whether the final product was cheapened by its streaming release. Does it live up to it's rich cultural history? The cinema flashbacks keep coming as we look at another property that arrived in the 90s, Warcraft. That's right, Caleb and Arthur went Back to the Movies to check out the mega-blockbuster from Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) to see if it's worth your time going back to the movies. Your fearless hosts wandered aimlessly through several different worlds to finally arrive in Azeroth. Duncan Jones' Warcraft takes on the tall order of adapting one of the most beloved game franchises of all time, and it is a tall order. This is also the third video game adaptation of 2016, following the financially successful Angry Birds and the flop Ratchet and Clank. With Assassin's Creed on the holiday horizon, the question of whether video games make good source material is really in the forefront of your hosts' minds. Warcraft tries and the results are well examined by Arthur and Caleb. This fantasy story of Orcs invading a new world to try and sustain their way of life has a lot of ambition, and features a notable cast of character actors. Caleb does ponder at what point do we start looking at these huge CGI spectacles as simply animated films though. Warcraft is another in a line of recent blockbusters that leaves Caleb and Arthur kind of stretched thin. They go through their history with the franchise and with Blizzard to set up their foundation for going into Warcraft. While both men have flirted with the franchise, neither were die-hard fans of the product which raises some questions of how that may have colored their viewing of the film. They also raise the question of whether a person's experience with a franchise should impact the film going process at all.  And these are all questions that we would love to hear your response to. So, please, let your hosts know what you thought of Warcraft in the comments below or on Twitter (@Good_Trash) and Facebook (/goodtrashmedia).

The 90s nostalgia just doesn't want to end. This week, Arthur and I head Back to the Movies with a look at the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, directed by Dave Green (Earth to Echo). Much like last week's episode involving X-Men: Apocalypse, this episode featured much reminiscing. Well, for Arthur anyway. Admittedly, my Turtle Nostalgia is quite minimum. This newest entry in the Turtle Franchise is another attempt to capitalize on a series that dates back to the 80s and as cycled in and out of popularity for nearly 30 years. Can it rise above it's predecessor? Or is Michael Bay's talons sunk in too deep? Picking up where the last film left off, the Turtles are still unable to come out and play for fear of becoming icons of fear. As this raises tensions within the team, a sinister new force threatens the world by enlisting the help of the Shredder and Baxter Stockman as well as a couple of new heavies. But the Turtles aren't alone as they're once again backed by April O'Neil and a new hero on the streets, Casey Jones. Can the Turtles overcome the odds and save the day, or will Shredder finally make turtle stew? Much like the film *Spoiler Alert* this show is stretched thin. Arthur and I do the best with what we've got. We both spend a good deal of time elaborating on the baggage that we bring to this film, for better and for worse. Yet, I feel that we are still able to have a smart conversation about such a middling film.

It's all aboard the Zootopia Express on this week's Back to the Movies with Arthur and me. It may be cute, colorful, and cuddly on the outside, but what lies beneath the surface is one of the most commentary heavy films Disney has made in over a decade. That's right listeners, this week's episode focuses on the issues few parents will be itching to discuss with their kids. With the dull and dreary superhero battles of the century between Batman/Superman and Captain America/Iron Man just mere days away, it'd be easy to overlook some of the prettier roses of spring 2016 releases. Luckily the unstoppable Disney marketing machine has made sure and well that the less hyped Zootopia isn't overlooked. Having made more than $154 million in the US alone in the two weeks since it's opening, Zootopia is proving to be one of the studio's biggest films since Frozen.Arthur and I give our brief reviews before delving into the surprisingly multilayered commentary on recent issues in American politics. Politics? You read that right listeners. The analysis gets topical in all the same ways as your high school debate class. No matter where you stand on the issues, we hope you'll tune in and join the challenge of he conversation that Zootopia brings to the table. Zootopian Politics Time StampsReview - 3:05Recommendations - 17:06*Spoilers*- 19:32Like what you hear? We may not have a giant Kaijus but this week's Back to the Movies packs a mean Godzilla sized punch in our review of 2016's biggest surprise, 10 Cloverfield Lane. It may not have much in common with it's predecessor, but that doesn't stop us from talking conspiracies, remembering the original, or discussing our spiderweb crazy theories. We're joined again by Dalton Stuart to talk about our memories with the 2008 Cloverfield before delving into our reviews and recommendations. In order to keep you spoiler free and ripe for the filmgoing experience, we keep our initial review on a tight lockdown of any real plot points. 10 Cloverfield Lane stayed under tight wraps at Bad Robot Productions under the code name Valencia based on a script titled The Cellar before being officially announced January 15 of this year. The film's shocking announcement less than 2 months before its release has been the talk of the internet and it's minimal marketing and projected success could effectively make it the Beyonce of the film industry.J.J. Abrams has run a tight shift as producer by keeping all of this film's secrets tightly under wraps. We don't want to spoil any of the fun, but here's a basic synopsis. After an accident, Howard (John Goodman) takes Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to his underground bunker and refuses to let her leave because of an incident that has occurred on the outside. 10 CLOVERFIELD LN TimestampsRemembering Cloverfield - 4:10Review - 14:12Recommendations - 30:50*Spoilers* - 35:36 Like what you hear?
