PART 3 They were the Comanche, or Numunuh—meaning "The People"— and they were the undisputed "Lords of the Plains," fiercely guarding their vast homeland across Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. Masters of horseback warfare, they resisted westward expansion as the U.S. government pushed settlers into their territory. In an 1836 raid on Fort Parker, nine-year-old Cynthia Ann Parker was taken captive. She embraced Comanche life, later marrying Chief Peta Nocona. And their son, Quanah Parker, became a legendary leader. As the U.S. broke the Treaty of Medicine Lodge, Quanah led his people in the Red River War, the last major conflict between the southern Plains tribes and the U.S. military. Realizing continued resistance meant destruction, he surrendered at Fort Sill in 1875 to secure his people's survival. Straddling two worlds, Quanah worked to bridge the divide between Native and white societies. Though never elected chief, he was appointed the Comanche Nation's Principal Chief. To his family, he was a beloved grandfather who championed education and Comanche traditions. To history, he remains the "Last Chief of the Comanche." In parts 1 and 2 of this series, I spoke with one of Quanah Parker's descendants, Jody Parker. Now in part 3, you'll hear directly from Quanah's great grandchildren: Jacquetta Parker Ardith Parker-Leming LaNora Parke Sandra Chesnut Don Allen Parker Jody Colbert The family shares insights on: - Quanah's influence on the importance of education and always showing up dressed to impress - His vision for a school and church for his people - What Quanah was like as a master horseman and a great warrior - The significance of Comanche oral history and that much of their knowledge came from both their elders and the Mennonite missionaries Quanah worked with - Did Quanah really tell a missionary she was "ugly"? You may be surprised by the answer! Finally, the elders share a heartfelt reflection on how Quanah bridged two worlds—the world of his people and of those who had taken over. Unfortunately, when I recorded this 2 years ago, my sound and video were messed up. So thank you for your patience, as it has been cleaned up as best as possible. Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 11 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week Rockie Rosenberg kicks off the episode with an interview of Nocona Burgess, a Native American indigenous artist and member of the Comanche Nation who now resides in Santa Fe. As the son of a former tribal chief and the great-great-grandson of one of the most revered Native American leaders, Chief Quanah Parker, his work presents strikingly modern depictions of Indigenous men and women from various tribal Nations of North America. Through the interview the pair discuss how Nocona has a great overview of the business side of art due to his extensive experience in navigating the art world at a young age. They also touch on Burgess' podcast experience and the classes he teaches at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) which deal with the business side of art. In our second interview, Jared Serios sits down with Lyn Sazon to talk about Serios' career as an artist who works in the mediums of digital and traditional art. Serios divulges how he started down the path of his artistic journey, including his early years and accomplishments, and talks about how the art he creates reflects his strong roots and cultural background. Sazon questions Serios about his creative process, and how he developed his unique style of artmaking. The two conclude the interview with a look at some of the artists that Serios admires, and what plans he has for the near future of his career.

Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! In today's episode, we're embarking on a journey through the wilderness of cinema to uncover the top 5 most formidable predators to ever stalk the silver screen. We'll then venture into the depths of "Prey," the latest entry in the iconic Predator franchise, before lightening the mood with a nostalgic look back at the animated classic, "Hey Arnold!"Top 5 Predators in Film:The Predator from "Predator" (1987) - The original jungle stalker that blends high-tech hunting with primal instincts, setting the bar for extra-terrestrial hunters. The Xenomorph from "Alien" (1979) - H.R. Giger's nightmarish creation remains one of the most terrifying and efficient killers in sci-fi history. The T-Rex from "Jurassic Park" (1993) - Spielberg resurrected cinema's most iconic dinosaur as a towering, relentless force of nature. The Shark from "Jaws" (1975) - The great white that made an entire generation think twice about stepping into the ocean, proving that the most frightening predators come from the depths. The Velociraptors from "Jurassic Park" (1993) - Smart, fast, and terrifyingly coordinated, these dinosaurs showcased the lethal cunning of nature's hunters.Main Feature - Prey (2022):"Prey" takes us back to the roots of the Predator franchise, setting the stage centuries ago in the Comanche Nation. It's a refreshing take that combines the survival and hunting elements intrinsic to the Predator lore with a historical backdrop, offering a unique perspective on the clash between alien technology and human ingenuity. The film has been praised for its strong character development, particularly the protagonist, a skilled female warrior, and for revitalizing the franchise with its innovative storytelling and breath-taking action sequences.Kids TV - Hey Arnold!Switching gears to something a bit more urban and a lot less predatory, "Hey Arnold!" offered '90s kids and their parents a heartfelt look at life through the eyes of Arnold, a city kid with a head shaped like a football, and his diverse group of friends. The show was celebrated for its nuanced portrayal of urban life, tackling issues like bullying, family dynamics, and the value of community with humour and grace.Whether you're in the mood for a thrilling hunt, a dive into a franchise's new territory, or just a trip down memory lane with some animated friends, today's episode has something for everyone. Democracy is Indigenous: The Power of the Vote with Laura Harris

Encounter Culture

This season, Encounter Culture is sharing the story of Miguel Trujillo, an unsung hero of voting rights activism for Native Americans in New Mexico. His legacy forms the foundation for every conversation in our series. If you haven't already, we urge you to catch up on the previous 5 episodes. When Indigenous people vote, they honor their past and forge a better tomorrow for their communities. The act itself remains a complicated exercise. Indigenous voters must contend with a history of colonial rule, the goal of which was to eradicate their way of life, as well as present-day attempts by self-styled “poll watchers” to block their access to polling places or annul their ballots. And yet, democracy has always been Indigenous; a tribe's power has always rested with its people. Welcome to the sixth and final episode in Encounter Culture's series about the life and legacy of Miguel Trujillo, a collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum. Encounter Culture host Charlotte Jusinski and series co-host Stephanie Padilla speak with the esteemed Laura Harris of Comanche Nation.  Laura has extensive experience in national, state, and local campaigns and political fundraising. She's also the executive director of Americans for Indian Opportunity. The trio discusses advocacy, education, and voting as paths to protecting Indigenous self-determination; they examine threats Indigenous voters face when participating in the electoral process – and finally recap the series. This episode was recorded in October 2022. The Predator has returned!  Well an earlier version of the fierce hunter from another planet…..and THIS time, he has visited America's Great Plains more than 300 years ago.  So is this a prequel to the 1987 sci-fi action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger?  Well sort of....This time, the story focuses on Naru (Amber Midthunder), a young member of the Comanche Nation who fancies herself a hunter even though she is expected to work more as a gatherer or healer.  So she's off on the hunt to prove herself….and guess who she runs into??  Eventually, more of her fellow tribesman get involved along with a group of French fur trappers.....and bloodshed ensues.  Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) directed this “Hulu Original” and let's see how it compares to the original. Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Earlier this month, “Prey,” the latest film in the Predator franchise, premiered on Hulu. The film centers on characters who are part of the Comanche Nation as they fight off threats from both the Predator as well as a group of French settlers. According to the film's producer, 20th Century Studios, “Prey” had the biggest ever debut of any movie or TV show on Hulu when it premiered earlier this month. Although the movie was directed and co-written by Dan Trachtenberg, who is white, Trachtenberg brought in co-producer Jhane Myers, who is Blackfeet and Comanche, to make sure that Native people were represented behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. Joey Clift, comedian, staff writer and supervising producer for Netflix's “Spirit Rangers,” and member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, has been an outspoken advocate for Native representation in Hollywood for years. He joined The Takeaway to discuss the significance of "Prey" and how it fits into the current movement around Native representation in the entertainment industry.

Prey movie review from the Salty Nerds has them talking about this prequel to the Predator movies from writer/director Dan Trachtenberg. The Prey Movie has taken a lot of criticism in the build up to its release on HULU for being "woke" and replacing the beefy Arnold Schwarzenegger with the petit Amber Midthunder as the main character who faces off with the Feral Predator. Is it really that bad? Or did the movie fall into the "get woke go broke" trap? Technically a Predator 5, Prey is said to be an origin story of the Predator in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, we definitely get to see a Predator story that is very different from the last outing we got with Shane Black's The Predator. But is re-hashing the same Predator movie formula a winning strategy? Whether you are a fan of action movie podcasts or horror movie podcasts, we got you covered with the Salty Nerd Podcast! Director: Dan Trachtenberg Screenwriter: Dan Trachtenberg, Patrick Aison Starring: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush Runtime: 1 hour 39 minutes Synopsis: The origin story of the Predator in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago. Naru, a skilled female warrior, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth. Prey does something that is very rare: It is the prequel to a cult classic that is released decades later that turns out to be....really really good. Prey is the best Predator film out of all the Predator films. And that's not a "grading on a curve score". This film is really good on it's own and then gets an added bonus for being a Predator film. There are so many things to love about this film. It does a great job of balancing homage with telling its own story without compromising the characters and development. It also turns the Predator back into the scary, unstoppable Boogieman that loves the challenge of the hunt. Add in the respect for indigenous culture and the cast and this is a top tier film that everyone should fire up in Hulu as soon as they can.  Like what you hear?
