Carefully Taught: Teaching Musical Theatre with Matty and Kikau

Today Kikau talks to Kelly Todd from Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. We have a fantastic conversation about her program, how her and her students survived two fires in the past few months, and hard work! Her recommendation is Brené Brown's podcast Dare to Lead. Kelly Todd received her MEd in mathematics education from UCLA in 1999 and her BA in theater arts also from UCLA in 1997. She has taught as a professor in the theater department at Pepperdine University for four years and has choreographed their recent musicals Big Fish, Crazy for You, and South Pacific. She is the 2014 Ovation Award Winner for Best Choreography for her work on Lysistrata Jones at the Chance Theater, where she is a resident artist. Some of her favorite credits there have been West Side Story, for which she received the LA Drama Critics Circle 2012 Special Award for Fight Choreography, and Triassic Parq, in 2013 and Jerry Springer: The Opera, in 2011 which both won the Ovation Award for Best Musical in an Intimate Theater and garnered her Ovation Award Nominations for Best Choreography. She was named Southern California's Choreographer of the Year in 2011 and 2012 by Stage Scene LA. Other credits include Once (Regional Premiere after Broadway), Light in the Piazza, Ivy and Bean, The Musical, Peter Pan and Seussical at South Coast Repertory, and The Who's Tommy at Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

In Episode 264, Sean and Andy talk with two members of the production team for the Broadway musical How to Dance in Ohio, sound designer Connor Wang and Liz Weber, who was a member of the Access Team for the show and also works as a sound engineer. The musical is based on the Peabody Award-winning documentary about the challenges and triumphs of a group of autistic teens working toward their first spring formal dance, notably starring actual autistic actors as the characters. Connor and Liz talk about the unique approaches the show took to make sure it was sensory-friendly for both the cast and the audience. This episode is sponsored by Allen & Heath and RCF.The production also made strides in making every aspect of the show accessible to those with autism, both on stage and in the audience, for which it won a Special Award for Authentic Autistic Representation Team from the Drama Desk Awards in July 2024. Connor and Liz also discuss the use of assistive listening devices, headphones, and the careful design of sound effects to accommodate individuals with sound sensitivities, and highlight the importance of authentic casting and representation in the show. Further, they focus on the challenges and considerations of mixing sound for a theater production generally and How to Dance in Ohio specifically, including the importance of creating a full mix for the performers on stage without letting volume levels get out of control. Liz (they/them) also shares a bit about their work as a sound engineer for music venues and how the sensory issues their autism brings to the table influence their approach to mixing, proving as much a benefit as it can be a challenge.Episode Links:Connor Wang On InstagramLiz Weber On InstagramConnor Wang DesignsMeet the Folks Making How to Dance in Ohio Accessible at Every PerformanceHow to Dance in Ohio Access Team Drama Desk Award Acceptance Speech“How to Make a Sound System More Accessible”How to Dance in Ohio Performance At The Macy's Thanksgiving Day ParadeHow to Dance in Ohio (Original Documentary)Episode 264 TranscriptBe sure to check out the Signal To Noise Facebook Group and Discord Server. Rise of the Dragon was a highly ambitious game that in many ways was ahead of its time on its release in 1990. As well as receiving plenty of positive reviews at the time, it also won a Special Award for Artistic Achievement from Computer Gaming World in 1991. In 1996 they also included it as 83rd best game of all time. And yet this game has become largely forgotten nowadays. Very rarely will you see this included in recommended adventure games or sci fi games so, hoping to go some way to rectifying this, Seoirse is joined by newest member of the AGP team, David Lambert, as they both discuss this game in detail including what they enjoyed about the game, what they feel could have been improved and just why they believe this game should be discussed more. Toscano and Chang continue their banter about those things they cared less for in the '80s. Today's special guest is Michael Thomas Perone an award-winning author who has written for The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore City Paper, Long Island Voice (a spinoff of The Village Voice), and The Island Ear (now titled Long Island Press), among others. Online, he has written for Fatherly, Yahoo!, WhatCulture!, and other websites that don't end with an exclamation mark. He works as a Senior Editor in Manhattan and lives on Long Island with his wife and two daughters. What's on top of Danger Peak? That's what thirteen-year-old Robert Kin and his two best friends, wisecracking and loyal Chris and sweet but put-upon Rinnie, want to find out in their small suburban town of the late 1980s. The three teens are members of the motorbike-racing club the Wild Boars, and with the inadvertent help of their eccentric technology teacher, Dr. Howard (who prefers to be called “Doctor,” not “Mister,” thank you very much), they build Robert a better, faster, and stronger dirt bike—piece by piece. Haunted by flashbacks of his older brother Danny, who died trying to scale Danger Peak the year before, Robert becomes obsessed with conquering the magical mountain. For the respect of his friends and school, and with the aid of his improved Action Bike, he discovers what lies beyond the peak of the mountain—and maybe even beyond the bounds of Earth itself. Filled with humor, adventure, and, most importantly, heart, Danger Peak is an inspiring story about what it takes to achieve your dreams—and what it means to feel alive. Having trained with him myself, I was excited to share his perspective on the show. We talk about what initially fueled his excitement about acting, some of the strongest skills that successful actors have, and what were some of the biggest takeaways that Austin learned from his acting teachers.Austin Pendleton is a playwright, actor, director, teacher, and a Steppenwolf ensemble member since 1987. He received critical acclaim in 1964 for his performance as Motel in the original Broadway cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He appeared in “The Last Sweet Days of Isaac” (for which he won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance and an Obie Award), “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Goodtime Charley,” and “Up from Paradise” as well as many other plays. In August 2006, Pendleton played the Chaplain in Bertolt Brecht's “Mother Courage and Her Children” with Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline in the Public Theater production. As a director, Pendleton has worked extensively on and off-Broadway. His direction of Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton in Lillian Hellman's “The Little Foxes” garnered him a Tony Award nomination. Imagine a building that has no two things the same. Not a single window the same, not a balustrade, not even a tile. Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is an amazing journey that took 30 years and what's been achieved by the construction team and the community of Whangārei is truly exceptional. Today Ryan and Darrell Trigg, owner of Trigg Construction, discuss this incredible project and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This art centre has been built to represent Hundertwasser's philosophical standpoint, which is to be in harmony with nature. The building is an artwork dedicated to his teachings and is based on sketches prepared by Hundertwasser himself in 1993. This is arguably New Zealand's biggest community-driven project with an estimated 50,000+ hours put in by volunteers – some volunteering full-time. The art centre got Gold Award and Special Award at New Zealand Commercial Project 2022.Darrell shares this experience of building something this unique. He also says that perhaps one thing he's most proud of is that 95% of 900 people who worked on that site are from Northland. This fantastic project gave a wonderful opportunity for the local craftspeople to acquire some unique skills to last them throughout their careers. LinksCommunity vision https://www.hundertwasserartcentre.co.nz/about/hundertwasser-art-centre/community-vision/ Hundertwasser on Ecology https://www.hundertwasserartcentre.co.nz/about/hundertwasser/hundertwasser-on-ecology/ New Zealand Commercial Project 2022 https://www.commercialprojectawards.co.nz/CPA/Entries%20and%20Results/2022_results/Special_Award/CPA/Results/Results_2022/Special_Award.aspx?hkey=33179b2c-7111-4722-ba22-4e7730957fbd  Where else you can find usWebsite: https://www.masterbuilder.org.nz/Elevate Platform: http://elevate.masterbuilder.org.nzInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/masterbuildernz/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/registeredmasterbuildersYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmh_9vl0pFf0zSB6N7RrVegTwitter: https://twitter.com/MasterBuilderNZ
