In 1974, CBS premiered Good Times, a TV sitcom that would showcase the first Black mother and Black father on screen – two parents, trying to make ends meet, while raising three children. Set in a public housing project in the south side of Chicago, Good Times elevated stories of struggle – the joy, the pain and the dreams of a determined Evans family during the economically turbulent 1970s. With legendary producer Norman Lear at the helm, the program would be one of three of the top ten rated shows with Black casts on American TV at that time – the other two gems were Sanford & Son and The Jeffersons. But there were many, including actors on these shows, who believed that producers equated the black experience with poverty and that too often writers pushed negative stereotypes and tropes, especially after the progress in civil rights of the previous decade. Times also weren't all that good for the Black creators of Good Times, Eric Monte and Mike Evans – both men struggled with Lear to receive recognition for their work.In the last 50 years, we've seen a (mostly) upward trajectory of positive Black representation in film and television – from the likes of The Cosby Show to Abbott Elementary or HBO's Insecure. Despite this advancement, negative stereotypes persist – and a new animated reboot of Good Times on Netflix is igniting fresh criticism, with many viewers saying the show promotes an image of Blacks as criminal, prone to violence, uneducated and hypersexualized. Would a reboot of a classic sitcom with an all-white cast like The Brady Bunch or Leave It to Beaver receive the same kind of treatment today?Join us as I SEE U host Eddie Robinson chats with the actor who portrayed the first Black teen on network television – Bern Nadette Stanis, who starred as Thelma, the daughter of the Evans family in Good Times. Stanis shares her thoughts on the adult reboot and how she felt misled after portraying one of the characters in the modern series. Plus, Variety TV critic, Aramide Tinubu, provides her perspective on why Hollywood still refuses to let go of outdated and harmful depictions of American Black life.

I don't know about you, but I struggle with meditation. I KNOW. I know. It has amazing benefits but personally, I've never been able to maintain a consistent practice. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of so many different characters. Powerful ones, smart ones, funny ones and straight up volatile ones. It's why watching them when they all come together to form The Avengers can feel unpredictable but a thrilling adventure all the same. That's why we decided to do a draft of our Top 5 Avengers to see if we could form our ideal team to fight against the evil in the world. For this one, we needed a Marvel super fan. That's why we enlisted Gotham Podcast Studio and Tandem co-founder Mike Ortiz for this exercise. And with the release of Black Widow this past weekend, we also get into a short, spoiler-free discussion about the film. Unfortunately, can't say that about the rest of the discussion. So let us know what you think of our teams, and maybe give us your own Top 5? We'd love to hear it.
This is the 100th episode! The podcast has gone through several evolutions including the format, personnel, and of course the locations in which it's recorded. It started in the small hot box studio in a WeWork, then the guys eventually began recording at Gotham Podcast Studios. And, today, due to the pandemic, they are recording from their homes. But, the show has only gotten better over time. In this episode, the guys celebrate this milestone by strolling down memory lane and talking about the ups and downs of producing a talk show with your friends. We want to thank everyone who has had a hand in getting the show to this point. You all are appreciated and we look forward to bringing you more great content as we explore life from the perspective of four Black men enjoying life after 40. This episode of Decoding 40 is packed with laughs, behind the scenes audio, and so much more. If you want to leave us a message or ask us a question, give us a call at (608) 618-4040. Want to be our Whiskey Warrior of the Week? Or, do you have an event or product that you would like us to attend, sample, and promote? Then, please send us an email to Decoding40@gmail.com to start the discussion. Follow us on all social media platforms @decoding40. This episode is sponsored by AdamandEve.com. A sexy item for him, a special gift for her and a 3rd item you'll both enjoy! And, ….6 FREE spicy MOVIES! Be sure to use the offer code DC40 at checkout!

Happy April! I hope and trust that this post finds you well. Change has been the watchword of recent times; our ability to adapt has been strongly tested, and will continue to be tested in the coming weeks. Today, I am continuing with my interviews of Irish Bellwethers. If you recall, my March podcasts were all set up to highlight Irish leaders in different industries, but then some kind of pandemic had to get in the middle of it, and I had to postpone two of the guests. I don't know who to complain to about that, but once I figure it out I'm writing a strongly-worded letter. Fortunately for you, pandemics won't stop me from highlighting this week's Irish Bellwether, because one of her specialties is understanding the psychology of and adapting to change. It's one of her specialties because not only can she teach it, she has experienced it as well. Catherine Norris is an Irish entrepreneur and the Irish executive coach. She has a truly unique perspective, influenced by her background in the arts, law, education and tourism. She has done it all: Started a dance school. Studied Psychology. And she has studied Anthropology. And she reads academic journals for fun. She is, put simply, a person you want on your team. I've now known Catherine for about six months, and conversations typically begin lightly (as in, how is your day?) and roller coaster to the end with her giving me a verbal dissertation on the neuroscience behind offering my daughter an extra cookie. What I'm trying to say is that I learn something from Catherine every time I speak with her which, to a guy who likes to pretend he knows everything, is pretty damn impressive. I loved the interview; she shared so much of what she has learned as an entrepreneur, educator and coach. One aspect that will ring true for many of you is her simple lesson: to be successful, you must continually articulate your vision. As we deal with change, your vision will have to change with it. For organizations to survive, that vision will have to be created, articulated and communicated consistently. Catherine is a rock star and one of the smartest people I've met. To learn more, you can reach out to her at catherine@bellwetherhub.com. Enjoy! Catherine and Jim at Gotham Podcast Studios

Seriously, share it with friends, family, and most importantly, complete strangers. We need the listeners and, frankly, don't care what happens to you. Written by Bob Merlotti. Voices by David Pasquesi, Geoffrey Cantor, Andy Bobrow, Kathy Nagler, Shannon Bobo, Med Ruddy, Dennis Ryan, David Gerbosi, Mike Casentini, and Bob Merlotti. All sketches recorded at The Network Studios by Mike Casentini except for "Doldrums – Holiday Edition," recorded by David Pasquesi in his home studio, and "Frontier Lube," recorded at Gotham Podcast Studios.
Heeeeeeeeey fabulous people! Natasha's back with the first YBF podcast epi of 2019, and it's about damn time.
