With another year having passed—perhaps even sped by—and a new one underfoot, HeightsCast returns with a discussion of time and solitude with Mike Ortiz and Rob Greving. Together, Mike and Rob invite us to slow down as they unpack their two recently published articles on the Forum. Mr. Ortiz dives into Henry David Thoreau's cabin life and the importance of intentional times of solitude in our lives, while Mr. Greving considers our often uneasy relationship with time and the good of slowing down, even as the world speeds up. As we look forward to the new year with hope and anticipation, let us not forget to slow down and, in Mr. Greving's words, listen for the present moment. After all, you can't read a poem in a hurry. In the opening paragraph of his Confessions, St. Augustine writes, “our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” For many, the first half of this famous line is a well-known feeling; it is, in many ways, “the feeling of actual life,” to put it in Hemingway's own terms. Indeed, there lives deep down a desire in all of our hearts for some mysterious reality — a green light across the bay — which seems to forever escape our grasp. Many are dreamers; fewer have found an object worthy of the greatness of their yearning. What do we do about a situation such as this? And what, if anything, can modern literature do to help us? This week, we sit down with Mike Ortiz to discuss one of the Upper School's new courses in the English Department. The course we discuss considers two men who, though both great American authors of the first half of the twentieth century, differed greatly in both their lifestyles and their styles of writing. The authors are the effervescent and romantic F. Scott Fitzgerald and the macho, realist Ernest Hemingway. For all their differences, however, both men shared at least one trait: a taste for the tragedies of life. Although their styles may diverge syntactically and verbally, the substance of what they express hits the reader with an equally direct force. In this episode, Mike helps us approach some of the darker aspects of these two men's lives and literature, seeing their works in the broader context of their lives and their lives in the broader context of our liberal arts curriculum at The Heights. It's difficult, Mike's interlocutor reminds us, to be truly a man fully alive and not feel much pain, for to have lived fully is to have loved with a full heart; and, on this side of paradise, to have loved means to have suffered much. But, as we hear in the episode, reading and studying great authors such as these and, what is more, learning to see the tragic characters of their works in a broad context may be more than a little help in preparing our students to face the many tragic romances of a dreamer and encounter the realism of true Romance. Chapters 2:17 Background to Hemingway's Good Friday 5:55 A New Model for English Classes 10:44 The Great Contrast: A Romantic and A Realist 16:05 The Iceberg Theory 23:13 How to Read Modern Literature without Becoming a Cynic 26:35 The Danger of Cynicism 28:00 To Get the Feeling of Actual Life 30:05 From The Sun Also Rises 35:04 The Loneliness and Inadequacy of Promiscuity 37:38 From The Great Gatsby 41:14 A Dreamer without an Object 43:30 From My Lost City 44:30 Called Back to Love: Dante and Fitzgerald 45:40 From Troubled Lives to Decline and Death 50:15 The Tragedy Behind the Tragedy Further Reading Today is Friday by Ernest Hemingway The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway This Side of Paradise by F. Flash floods. Supply chain issues. Safety briefings. Would you believe this is opera? Host Jane Trembley discovers that only at Santa Fe Opera does behind-the-scenes excitement rival onstage drama. She chats with Production & Recruiting Coordinator Tracy Armagost and Technical Director Mike Ortiz, the supportive, creative pair behind SFO backstage team. Tracy and Mike share their long histories with the opera, some of the magical (and nerve wracking!) moments they've helped bring to the stage, and exciting maneuvers to pay attention to in the upcoming season. “Our jobs mingle quite a bit, especially with the scheduling personnel management, on-stage rehearsals,” says Tracy of the day-to-day interaction she and Mike share. While that interaction peaks during the summer months, year-round communication between their departments is vital to maintaining SFO's reputation as a world-class arts organization. Consider the weather-related variables of staging massive productions in an open-air theatre sat in the middle of a desert. Throw in the watchful eyes of audience members who prefer to observe change-overs at intermission rather than grab a refreshment in the lobby. Mike and Tracy fit these puzzle pieces (and many more) together on a per-show basis––often years before a production even lands on the stage. Safety is an additional concern for this duo. The onstage choreography between people and sets requires repeated practice to execute without endangering anyone. “There are sometimes multiple thousand-pound pieces of scenery moving really fast to get from point A to point B,” says Mike. “You could very easily get run over.” Both Tracy and Mike agree that as demanding as SFO productions are, there's no place like it in all of opera. “It's a unique place,” says Mike. “I'm very fortunate to have been able to climb the ladder here, to have a successful career, and be home in Santa Fe.” CREDITS Hosted by Jane Trembley Featuring: Mike Ortiz Technical Director, Santa Fe Opera Tracy Armagost Production & Recruiting Coordinator, Santa Fe Opera Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast, produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios. Mike Ortiz grew up in the church, but the typical culture swept him away until God. God stepped in to save him from some health problems and then took Mike Ortiz on a series of steps from simply attending a Bible Study, to a Discipleship School, all the way to the far end of Haiti where he served as a missionary for 2-3 years. Mike and his Wife Marta now serve as Shepherds at the Gathering. This is a great story on how small steps of faith can lead to a big life of impact.

Mike Ortiz of @sipjojo based out of Miami, Florida. Mike won Tea Masters Cup 2019. He'd be defending it next month if not for the rona. Mike got into tea via meditation and Qi Gong practices. Contra to me, body practice came first, then tea practice. I discovered tea and learned about everything it pertained to once I got hooked. So there's a lot I learned here, how tea and its practice can parallel internal and external in ways I hadn't thought of. Both Soulless Minions are joined by special guests Mike Ortiz and Damon Shaw of Geek Fights, Tsyto and Mike and Max of Commentary Track Stars for this commentary on the 1989 film Batman. There was a lot of anticipation in the summer of 1989 as this new version of Batman was nearing release. It had been many years since Batman graced the screens of our nations cinemas and many people feared it would be a let down. Some even thought it would be a catastrophe. However, Batman turned out to be a critical and financial success that ecplised doubters and naysayers. Does the film still hold up after all these years? Is this film more noir than its sequels? Is Michael Keaton the best Batman? Does the charasmatic Joker overshadow all the other characters? These are some of the questions The Minions and our guests ponder. Sync Point: The first frame after the Warner Bros. logo has faded away
One of the Soulless Minions is joined by Mike Ortiz and Damon Shaw of Geek Fights for this very special Nitpicker commentary on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Note: This commentary was recorded using the theatrical edition. Mike, Damon and Josh recognize the greatness that is Wrath of Khan but sometimes Trekkers find it interesting to really deconstruct Star Trek and shine a light and some of its oddities and inconsistencies. Most of our comments are geared toward larger elements involving the plot but we still find a plenty of time to puzzle over minutia as well. Overall this was a very fun experience for the three of us. Hopefully, others will enjoy our musings. Sync Point: The black frame after the Paramount logo has faded away. Email us
The Soulless Minions are joined by special guests -- Mike Ortiz and Damon Shaw of Geek Fights, Michael Felscher of Red Shirt Pictures and the mysterious Allen -- for a look back at the most underrated of the Star Trek films. The Search for Spock is the 2nd chapter in what has come to be known as The Star Trek Trilogy. Nevertheless, because it bears an odd number it is assumed to suffer from the odd numbered curse. The Soulless Minions and guest commentators hope to dispel that notion to whomever may listen. It may be not be as acclaimed as The Wrath of Khan or The Voyage Home but this 2nd act has a lot of great things going for it -- themes of life and death, friendship, sacrifice and a beautiful musical score. Sync Point - The first white frame after the Paramount Logo has faded away. This commentary was recorded using a Region DVD. Email us
Joining the Soulless Minions for this commetary on the 1997 film Batman and Robin are Tysto, Mike Ortiz and Damon Shaw of Geek Fights, and Mike Schindler of Commetary Track Stars. Note: Mike Schindler arrives late to the commentary. Approximately 1hr and 1/2 in the film. Most do not speak well of this film. However, our approach to this commentary is not in that vein. We admit its flaws but attempt to see the good things in it. It's campy, bright and full of cheese. Sync Point: The first frame immediately after the titles "Warner Bros Pictures Presents" has faded away. Email us
For this commentary we're joined by three special guest commentators--Damon Shaw and Mike Ortiz of Geek Fights (http://www.geekfights.net/) and Michael Felsher of Red Shirt Pictures (http://www.redshirtpictures.com/) for a commentary on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Well, it's Star Wars... ...enough said. Sync Point: The first black frame immediately after the Lucas Film logo has faded to black. The commentary was recorded using a Region 1 DVD. Special Note: The audio quality of this commentary isn't up to our usual standards. It's not perfect but it's listenable. Email us
