Public Safety Thursday: The Many Moving Parts of Frederick County Sheriff's Office

In this episode of The Valley Today - Public Safety Thursday - host Janet Michael sat down with Captain Warren Gosnell of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office to discuss public safety, impaired driving, and the multifaceted responsibilities of local law enforcement. The pre-recorded session offered listeners a unique glimpse into both the operational and emotional aspects of law enforcement. Captain Gosnell, or ‘Goz,' is renowned for his dedication to public safety, particularly in the realm of impaired driving enforcement. The discussion opened with an overview of Goz's participation in an advanced DUI and DUID (Driving Under the Influence of Drugs) class in Williamsburg, where he educates law enforcement officers and prosecutors on the complexities of impaired driving cases. “It's not just about the investigation; it's about ensuring these cases are successfully prosecuted,” Goz emphasized. The conversation took on a poignant note as Goz shared his personal connection to the issue, having grown up with an alcoholic father. He fervently argued that impaired drivers deserve a chance to overcome their addictions, yet underscored the devastating impact of impaired driving on innocent victims. “What if it's not the impaired person who perished in the crash?” he asked solemnly. Janet and Goz explored the perceptions surrounding impaired driving incidents, discussing the misconception that impaired drivers often walk away unscathed from accidents. Goz debunked this myth, explaining the psychological bias that leads people to remember these instances more vividly. Beyond impaired driving, Goz delved into the comprehensive structure of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, revealing an intricate web of divisions, including Criminal Investigations, Civil Process, School Safety, Administrative, and Special Operations. Each division plays a pivotal role in maintaining public safety, from serving eviction notices to running SWAT and search-and-rescue operations. Janet highlighted the community's frequent interactions with law enforcement, often through traffic stops or emergency calls. Goz addressed the perception of law enforcement, stressing the importance of understanding the broader scope of their duties and responsibilities. Special attention was given to the importance of teamwork between law enforcement and prosecutors. Goz detailed how officers must gather evidence meticulously to aid in the successful prosecution of cases, likening it to a well-coordinated effort between waitstaff and chefs in a restaurant. As the conversation drew to a close, Janet and Goz touched on the everyday challenges and triumphs faced by law enforcement officers. Goz reflected on his career with a mix of humility and pride, reaffirming his commitment to public safety and the continuous fight against impaired driving. In an era where public perception of law enforcement can be polarized, this dialogue served as a heartfelt reminder of the dedication and humanity of those tasked with keeping our communities safe. Janet and Goz's candid conversation offered a rare, thoughtful perspective that resonated deeply with listeners.

This week, host Isaac Butler talks to composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue, who fronts the 18-piece big band jazz group Secret Society. In the interview, Darcy talks about the thought processes that go into his compositions, like how his interest in mathematician Alan Turning inspired a track on the group's most recent album Dynamic Maximum Tension. He also discusses the many hats he needs to wear, how he balances complexity and accessibility in his music, and how he makes the most of rehearsal time with such a big group.  After the interview, Isaac and co-host Ronald Young Jr. talk about the challenges and discomforts of self-promotion.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, Darcy explains how he decides how to assign solos in his big band music.  Send your questions about creativity and any other feedback to working@slate.com or give us a call at (304) 933-9675. This week on The Exit: Ben Faw has gone through two exits, one of which closed for a $100M valuation. In this conversation, Ben discusses how he selected the business to build, his criteria for finding an M&A advisor at the beginning of the exit process, and some metrics the buyer was looking at that ultimately led to closing the deal. In regards to the timing of the sale, interestingly, Ben starts thinking about selling a business when everything is going well, as this is when you can sell for the highest valuation and attract the best buyers. Aside from the success of the exit itself, another major accomplishment and testament to the quality of the company was in growing a team of 100, ~95 of whom stayed with the company after the exit. An Mp3 would be great, or just a regular email is fine. Send anything you want to soulforgepodcast@gmail.com On this episode, we talk about a little bit of everything. During the past weekend, Shawn drove to Timmins after work on Friday to visit his son. Although the drive usually takes 6 hours, he found a shortcut that shaved approximately 30 minutes from the trip. Naturally it was a quick trip because Shawn had to be back at work on Monday. Shawn and his son Bishop spent all day Saturday together. They went for brunch and then hunted for Hot Wheels. They also had several great conversations about the future. Bishop's mom is thinking about moving the family to Thunder Bay. Bishop hates change. He would prefer to remain in Timmins. Because he will soon be 18, and hence an adult, he can make his own choices. Perhaps he will move in with a friend. There is still much to consider such as finances and schooling. Gaming is Bishop's main focus. Nothing else seems to matter at the moment. This will definitely be a challenge going forward. Current world events include the Hawaii wild fire which is the worst in USA history. The war in Ukraine continues to carry on and the missiles requested from Germany may not arrive. Former president Trump has been indicted for a 4th time, this latest one by Georgia. In less than a month, Shawn and his girlfriend Leah, and their friend Amanda will be at Disney. Although they have gone previously, this will be Shawn's first time. Georgia and Florida. Plane and train rides. The adventure has many moving parts to it.
