Leviticus 05.1-13 Bible Study - Sin Offering (Part 2)In this Bible study, we look at the 2nd half of the Sin Offering as outlined in Leviticus 5.1-13. The Israelites were required to perform a “sin offering” if they failed to do something that was required, such as failing to give a testimony, dealing properly with ritual uncleanness, or fulfilling an oath. We also look at the “sin offering” as the “purification offering” asking why a woman who just gave birth would be required to give a “sin offering?” A key verse in this passage is Leviticus 5.5 in which the text tells us that confession is key to the process. OUTLINE:01:45 - What is Iron Sheep Ministries? 07:04 - Outline of the talk: 5.1-6 Failure to do something that was required: - v1 - Failure to give testimony, which could prevent justice from being carried out. - v2-3 - Failure to deal properly with ritual uncleanness, which could lead to the Lord's tabernacle being defiled.- v4 - Failure to fulfill an oath, which would result in the Lord's name being profaned. In any of the above. ONCE they realized their guilt there were two things they had to do.- v5 - Confess their sin- v6 - bring an offering to the Tabernacle so the priest could make atonement for them.5.7-13 - Three possible offerings, adjusted according to the economic situation of the person bringing the offering. EVERYONE has the opportunity to make a sacrifice, no matter how poor they were. 08:42 - Leviticus 5.1-1312:02 - Lev 5.1 - public charge to testify - it was considered a sin to see something and not say something. 14:25 - Lev 5.2-3 - “ceremonially unclean” - we see unclean as being related to public health or hygiene. A better way to think of a ceremony unclean vs clean is adequately prepared for worship.Rev 7.141 John 1.722:45 - purification offeringWORD STUDY: Ḥaṭṭā'āṯ חַטָּאָת (hea-taw-aw) - “sin, sin offering, purification from sins of ceremonial uncleanness.”Occurs 294x in KJV, 82x in Lev, 32x in Lev 4-5:13Lev 5.2-3Lev 12.1-8Luke 2.22-2430:29 - Lev 5.4 OathsMat 5.33-3732:50 - Lev 5.5 - confess - 35:55 - why is confession important? When you realize your guilt, the very first step, you must go through is to confess your sin before the Lord. He already knows what you did! But if you refuse to acknowledge your sin, then there is no room for the Holy Spirit to work in you. The Lord's discipline is a good thing. The sin offering (also known as the purification offering) is covered in Leviticus chapter 4 as well as the first thirteen verses of chapter 5. In this study, we will look at the first portion, as outlined in Leviticus chapter 4. The sin offering was an offering required when an individual (or group) had sinned unintentionally. Leviticus 3 and 4 outline laws firstly for the Peace Offering (chapter 3) and the Sin Offering (chapter 4). The importance of the Peace Offering is that it speaks of our aim – to have peace with God – see Isaiah 26 verses 1-3. And, like all Scripture, our Lord Jesus Christ is the focus – read aloud slowly and carefully Ephesians 2 verses 14-22 – ponder its meaning to you. Verses 1-5 of Leviticus 3 describe what was offered and how it was offered. Verses 6-7 tell us that the peace offering had to be without blemish. This is because it firstly spoke of our Lord; and secondly it tells of what we aspire to give to the LORD. And in Christ we are presented before the Father as being unblemished (Jude v24). Verses 8-17 provide further instructions for offering. Like the burnt offering the person making the offering had to lay his hands on the animal's head to identify with the offering. The fat represented energetic and wholehearted service to our Sovereign. So the Peace Offering speaks of fellowship with God. Although having fellowship with God and His Son is our highest need, redemption through the blood of Christ is our first need (Psalm 50:5; Ephesians 2:1-13, 1 John 1 verses 1-10). So Leviticus 4 tells us about the Sin Offering. This chapter is more than three times the length of chapter 3. Verses 1-12 tell us what was offered and how it was made. Verses 13-31 describe the various groups for whom the offering was made; verses 13-21 the whole of Israel. The identification with the offering was made by their elders; verses 22-26 tell of a ruler making this offering; verses 27-35 talk about individuals within the nation making the offering. It is noteworthy that for all three groups the forgiveness of sin is spoken of – verses 26, 31, 35. This forgiveness was temporary and unavailing unless the offerer had faith and understood the need of the provision of an offering that could cleans the conscience of guilt. This could only be done through the forgiveness of sins in our Lord Jesus Christ – see Hebrews 10:1-14. Psalm 104 is a psalm of thanksgiving to the LORD for His majestic power seen in His creation. Verse 24 of the song is perhaps the key to understanding its message. The AV says that the earth is full of God's “riches” (Hebrew “creation”) and ESV “creatures”. The Almighty's creation and His earth are totally awesome. And for these reasons the writer extols his Creator in verses 1-4. The psalmist calls upon all creation to join him in praise and worship of the Omnipotent One, who controls the world and its diverse creatures. His angels, who are mighty in power, are those who minister to the heirs of salvation as Hebrews 1 explains. The earth, its founding and mountains are described in verses 5-9. Some of creations habitats and provisioning are described in verses 10-18. Verses 19-20 talk of the providing of night and day as appointments from our Sovereign (Genesis 1 verses 14-19). The theme of the Psalm is expressed in verse 24. And this theme is magnificently captured by Hayden's “Creation Hymn” – to quote from the second half of the third stanza, “In reason's ear they all rejoice, and utter forth a glorious voice; for ever singing as they shine, the Hand that made us is Divine”. Verses 25-26 speak of the teeming sea creatures. Verses 27-30 tell of the total dependence of every living thing on the sustaining Spirit of their Creator; not only in the temporary and transient present, but for the transformational power to feed them with food of eternal life. Verses 31-35 conclude the psalm with responsive praise and the confidence that the sinner will be rooted from the earth and the faithful will fill it with the Almighty's praise. From 1 Corinthians 12-14 Paul shows that the body of believers in Christ is analogous to the human body. In 1 Corinthians 12 the Apostle Paul describes how God through His Spirit had distributed gifts and roles within the ecclesia. Just as our bodily members have unique and distinctive functions so too is it within the ecclesia of Christ: compare Romans 12 verses 3-8. It is never a question as to what member is the most important; because the unseen and less showy members are the most vital to the body, ie the heart, the kidneys etc. Just as in Ephesians 4 verses 1-16. Paul demonstrates that, rather than the gift, it is the service – or function which the individual can contribute to the growth of the body into Christ its head. This chapter is an answer to all would be schismatics – the body of true believers in the one body of Christ. The Apostle finishes the chapter by telling his readers that the better way of service lay in three qualities, which were not the spirit gifts, but attributes available to all believers – FAITH, HOPE and LOVE. 1 Corinthians 13 reveals that the infantile aids of the spirit gifts would cease once their objective of establishing a mature community of believers had been completed. This is the basis of his magnificent treatise on love; showing it to be the greatest and only enduring gift. Hope will vanish when it is realised in God's Kingdom. Believing will have been completed in the receiving of immortality. What a wonderful experience awaits us when we will then know God as He now knows us. Only love goes on and never cease. Slowly read the chapter aloud. Ponder, pause and meditate its message for the way believers must live. This chapter in Paul's letter changes the Corinthians narrow self-focus to an elevation of their minds to living the truth as our Lord Jesus Christ our head directed both them and us: Ephesians 4:11-16.

The Sacrifices in the book of Leviticus can be confusing. However, unraveling their message yields key truths that are foundational to the rest of our understanding of the Word of God. Today we'll look at both Leviticus 5 and 6 and see how critical the Guilt Offering is to our relationship with the Lord. Join us for this important study!  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Now that we've talked about sin offerings for two days, how important was it for the person to identify with the animal that was about to be sacrificed? How would the person identify with that animal? How do we identify with Christ's sacrifice? Have you ever identified your sins with Christ's death?  2.    How does the podcast suggest that the opening verses of chapter 5 were speaking of ways to lower the cost of the sacrifice for the worshipper? What does this show us about the Lord's desire for His people to be right with Him? Was the intent of the sacrificial system to “make people pay” for their sins, or something else? How does this show us God's mercy for His people?  3.    What was the difference between a “Sin Offering” (in Chapter 4) and a “Guilt Offering” (in Chapter 5)? What was different about the offense being addressed? What was different about the sacrifice that was offered?  4.    What were the instructions regarding the “restitution” for a Guilt Offering? Why was this step included in this sacrifice? What does Chapter 6 show us about the link between our sins against others and our sins against God? Was it possible for a person to be forgiven by God if they have hurt another person and not sought restitution with that other person first? Why? 5.    The podcast pointed out that if we are in debt to an infinite God, then by definition we have an infinite debt. How is this problem compounded by having to repay an additional 20% of our debt?  6.    Isaiah 53:10 tells us that Jesus was our Guilt Offering. In light of the principles of this chapter, what did His debt entail? What about His nature enabled Him to fully make this payment on behalf of all of His people? When we sin, how do we make things right with God? Well, the answer might surprise us, because as we look at Leviticus 4, we'll see that not every sin could be forgiven through the sacrificial system; which will underscore just how important it is that Jesus died for all of our sins. Join us in this important study on this challenging passage!  DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1.    Leviticus 4 talks about what to do when specific people within the community sin, specifically the anointed priests in verse 3, the entire community in verse 13, a leader in verse 22, and the common person in verse 27. How did a person's relationship to the community affect the kind of guilt that they might bring upon that community?  2.    Leviticus 4 contains the first occurrence of the word “forgiveness” in the book of Leviticus. How did the podcast explain what forgiveness is? According to verses 20, 26, 31, and 35, how was forgiveness obtained for the people who sought it? 3.    The word “atonement” is literally “at-one-ment”. Who are we “at one with” and what does this mean? According to verses 20, 26, 31 and 35, how was atonement achieved? The podcast spoke about how the root idea of “atonement” was that of “covering.” In these sacrifices, what was being covered? What was it being covered with? How does this help us understand the concept of atonement that we have in Christ?  4.    What were some of the reasons given in the podcast for why an animal had to die in order to achieve atonement? How does this help us understand Jesus' death in our place? If Jesus has suffered the death that our sins deserve, what does that mean for us and our life?  5.    According to verse 2, what kinds of sins were being addressed here? What does Numbers 15:29 say about intentional sins? What do you think it would have been like to carry this weight of intentional sin around? How does 1st John 1:7 or Colossians 2:13-14 address this in the New Covenant?  6.    How is Christ's sacrifice a fulfillment of the Sin Offering discussed here in Leviticus 4? How is Christ's sacrifice even greater than the provision of this sacrifice here? How can we praise Christ for the offering He has made for us? Commentary on Exodus 29 Exodus 29 provides detailed instructions on the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests, emphasizing the sacredness of their role in ministering before God. The chapter is part of the broader section of Exodus that outlines the construction of the Tabernacle and the establishment of the priesthood, representing God's desire to dwell among His people and mediate His covenant through a holy priesthood. Key Themes in Exodus 29 1.Priestly Consecration (Verses 1–9): •God commands Moses to consecrate Aaron and his sons through specific rituals, including washing, clothing, and anointing them with oil. •This act symbolizes purification, authority, and the setting apart of the priests for holy service. The garments, such as the ephod and breastplate, are not merely ornamental but signify their divine appointment and the responsibilities of representing the people before God. 2.Sin Offering and Atonement (Verses 10–14): •A bull is sacrificed as a sin offering to atone for the sins of Aaron and his sons, highlighting the necessity of purity before approaching God's presence. •This ritual underscores humanity's sinfulness and the need for blood atonement, foreshadowing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ as the perfect High Priest (Hebrews 9:11-14). 3.Burnt Offering (Verses 15–18): •A ram is offered as a burnt offering, symbolizing complete surrender and devotion to God. The aroma is described as pleasing to the Lord, signifying His acceptance of the offering. 4.Ordination Offering (Verses 19–34): •A second ram is sacrificed as part of the ordination process. Its blood is applied to the priests' ears, thumbs, and toes, representing their dedication to listening to God, serving Him, and walking in His ways. •The wave offering, involving portions of the sacrifice, emphasizes the priests' role in mediating worship between God and the people. 5.Continual Burnt Offering (Verses 35–46): •God commands daily offerings—a lamb every morning and evening—as a perpetual reminder of His covenant relationship with Israel. •This daily ritual symbolizes ongoing fellowship with God and serves as a precursor to the unceasing intercession of Christ. Spiritual Lessons from Exodus 29 1.Holiness in Service: •The consecration of the priests demonstrates that those who serve God must approach Him with reverence and purity. This principle applies to all believers, who are called to be a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). 2.The Necessity of Atonement: •The sacrifices in this chapter reveal humanity's need for a mediator and point forward to Christ, whose sacrifice provides the ultimate atonement for sin. 3.God's Desire to Dwell Among His People: •The repeated phrase “I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God” (v. 45) encapsulates God's heart for relationship with His people, fulfilled in Jesus (John 1:14) and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. 4.Daily Devotion: •The continual burnt offering teaches the importance of daily worship and commitment to God. It calls believers to offer themselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). Christological Connection Exodus 29 vividly portrays the sacrificial system and priesthood, both of which find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. He is the sinless High Priest who mediates a new covenant (Hebrews 7:23-28) and the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). Practical Application •As believers, we are called to live consecrated lives, offering our talents, time, and hearts in service to God. •Regular worship and communion with God are vital for maintaining a close relationship with Him, just as the continual offerings sustained Israel's connection with the Lord. Exodus 29 reminds us of God's holiness, the cost of sin, and the profound privilege of being in His presence, themes that resonate throughout the entire biblical narrative.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

Welcome back to the Open Our Bibles Together podcast!   As promised at the end of our last episode, back to school equals back to the podcast after a much-needed summer break. It is honestly mind-blowing to consider all of the changes happening in our home and lives this Fall which makes me SUPER GRATEFUL I had the opportunity to slow down and soak in all of the times our F7 family spent together in Summer 2024. It truly was quite a blessing, BUT NOW, I'm back and VERY ready to dive into our studies in the book of Leviticus together.   Sooooo, as a bit of a refresher, please recall that Leviticus picks up right where Exodus left off. At the end of Exodus, we saw that God filled the tent with His glory after the Tabernacle was completed, but His presence was too holy, so not even Moses could enter. The question Exodus left us with is this… How can we live in the presence of our holy God? Well, friends, we find that answer in the book of Leviticus!! How's that for an enticing teaser to an often overlooked and frequently abandoned book of the Bible?! LOL!   As we pick up today (and before we explore Leviticus chapters 5 through 7), we first take a step back to consider a couple 30,000 feet/big picture story type views I found on repeat over and over and over again in my studies... this time by focusing in on the themes of God's holiness and His Presence among His people. God With Us. So good.   In this episode, we'll also unpack the various offerings described in these chapters, including the Sin Offering, Guilt Offering, Burnt Offering, Grain Offering, and Peace Offering. We discuss the significance of these sacrifices, their role in atonement and purification, and how they point us to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.   Honestly, there's all this and so much more in this first episode release after our OOBT summer break! Be sure you don't miss out on this one! I can't wait to study with you!     For the full episode show notes, please go to https://mfahring.com/leviticus-5-7/

Welcome to Day 2401 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – Is There Really a Sin Offering? – I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2401 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2401 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today is the tenth lesson in our segment, Theology Thursday. Utilizing excerpts from a book titled: I Dare You Not To Bore Me With The Bible written by Hebrew Bible scholar and professor the late Dr. Michael S Heiser, we will invest a couple of years going through the entire Bible, exploring short Biblical lessons that you may not have received in Bible classes or Church. The Bible is a wonderful book. Its pages reveal the epic story of God's redemption of humankind and the long, bitter conflict against evil. Yet it's also a book that seems strange to us. While God's Word was written for us, it wasn't written to us. Today, our lesson is, Is There Really a Sin Offering? Hebrews 10:4 asserts, For it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins, but Leviticus seems to tell a different story. Even casually reading the book, we notice that Israelites who bring proper sacrifices “shall be forgiven” (e.g., Lev 4:20, 26, 31, 35: 5:10, 13, 16, 18). Have we reached an impasse? Rather than labeling this a contradiction, we might examine our own perceptions of Old Testament sacrifices—specifically, the sin offering. “Sin-offering” is a translation of the Hebrew term chatta' t, which has the basic meaning of “to miss the mark” or “to fall short.” In using a traditional, familiar rendering, many English Bible translations cause us to misunderstand this sacrifice. The Goal of the Sin Offering The label “sin offering” assumes that the goal of this sacrifice was forgiveness for moral failures or violations—sins as we think of them. Leviticus reveals this is not the case. The sin offering was used in cases where people suffered from a bodily discharge (Lev 15), at the dedication of a new altar (Lev 8), or when a Nazirite completes a vow of abstinence (Lev 12). The fundamental goal of the sin offering was ritual purification. It was designed to guard sacred space—territory sanctified by God's presence—from infection by impurity. By definition, every person or object “falls short” of divine perfection and must be ritually marked (set apart) as acceptable for holy ground. The sin offering—better rendered as a “purification offering”—was therefore applied to people and inanimate objects to mark them as acceptable before God. These people (and objects) were not unacceptable because they had done evil, but because they were imperfect—they “fell short” of the holy perfection that God's presence required. The ritual reinforced the idea of the complete otherness of God. Depending on the individual's status in the community—whether priest or commoner—the blood of the offering was either used outside or inside the sanctuary. The blood was brought inside the sanctuary when the sin

In this enriching episode, we explore the profound theme of CHRIST as our unique GOAL, highlighting prayer as a vital resource that should shape our lives. We reflect on biblical offerings like the Sin Offering, Trespass Offering, and Burnt Offering, emphasizing a life of sacrifice as the reasonable response to God's extravagant grace. In Genesis 18:19, we recognize Abraham's pivotal role in God's redemptive plan. Abraham's obedience and stewardship serve as a pattern to be considered, with Christ as his ultimate goal. We underscore Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of God's promises to Abraham and encourage listeners to emulate a faithful walk with God by making Christ the center of their lives.

DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: Leviticus 5 & 6 1. Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: Leviticus 4 1. If you appreciate this work, consider supporting it - https://www.patreon.com/seekgodtogether Today we will read Hebrews 10:26-27 which says, “For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.” Well this one is scary isn't it? And to be clear, this affects us all. There is no one free of intentional sin. We're all guilty, including the great apostle Paul himself. So is this passage teaching that we're all doomed if/when we intentionally sin after receiving Jesus as our Savior? You could interpret it that way. It's bleak and hopeless but an interpretation. Perhaps a better way is through the lens of the Old Testament sacrificial system - something we're sadly distanced from in Christianity.  In Leviticus, the first offering is the Burnt Offering. This is an all-purpose, thorough atoning sacrifice. It's offered when a baby is born. It's a pleasing aroma to God. It's a sacrifice that seems to cover literally anything and everything and is offered regularly. None of the animal is spared. None is eaten. It is completely consumed by fire. And while there are other sacrifices to be eaten and enjoyed as a family, or just given out of gratitude, the Sin Offering is the other serious big one. The Sin Offering, also a burnt offering, is offered case by case when someone sins unintentionally and becomes aware, or sins intentionally and repents. Either way, it requires the individual to take responsibility, repent, and offer the sacrifice. There is however the sin of defiance, or “High Handedness” in Numbers 15:30 and seems to describe an ongoing obstinance and resistance to repentance that no offering could cover. Jesus being the ultimate sacrifice fulfills these requirements and also informs the New Testament Jewish understanding of His work. So back to our passage. Jesus serves as the thorough Burnt Offering. He's covered it all. And when we go on to sin, which we do, He is also the Sin Offering covering each and every misstep. If we sin quote “intentionally,” I take this to mean an attitude of resistance - the opposite of repentance - the sin of “High Handedness.”  Imagine a husband in a room with his wife, and he just willy nilly flips on porn. No shame, no remorse, nothing. What would happen? He has knowledge of the truth - his wife is in the room. And yet he's obstinate. In that moment, the intimacy of the marriage hits a brick wall and all that remains is her consuming wrath and judgement. It's either destruction of the relationship that could have been, or repentance and sacrifice. Those are the only options.  It's no different with God. All provision has been made but you will not find intimacy with Him while in defiant intentional sin. You are right for feeling the impending weight of His wrath. The Sin Offering is however available whenever you repent. You can play that card a million times and never exhaust God's grace. But it will always require a turning from your resistance and repenting. Destruction or repentance. Those are the only options. And the more time goes by, the clearer those destinies become in each of us. God, I know my own heart. There are times I do sin intentionally, and I'm hard hearted. Forgive me. I repent again. I want You.

Fr. Mike reveals the parallels between the day of atonement and the sacrifice of the mass. We learn how the temple worship practices of the old testament foreshadow the worship practices of the Catholic Church. Today's readings are Exodus 23, Leviticus 16, and Psalm 77.
