In a world overflowing with noise and opinions, how can we, as disciples and leaders, cultivate wisdom, grace, and meaningful conversations? Discipleship doesn't just happen in classrooms or sermons—it happens in the daily rhythms of our lives, in the words we speak, the beauty we notice, and the way we lead others in truth and love.In this episode of Group Answers, host Brian Daniel sits down with bestselling author and GraceLaced founder Ruth Chou Simons for a deeply thoughtful conversation about discipleship in an age of information overload. Ruth challenges listeners to embrace intentionality in their spiritual walk, starting with wisdom in speech and a commitment to truth. Together, they discuss the crucial role of small group leaders in cultivating spaces for honest and constructive dialogue, even when cultural conversations feel overwhelming.Ruth also unpacks how beauty can be a powerful tool in discipleship—drawing hearts toward God's character—and she shares how everyday family conversations can lay the groundwork for faith in the next generation. This episode will encourage leaders to slow down, pay attention to what truly matters, and guide others with wisdom rooted in Scripture and grace. If this episode inspired you, we'd love for you to rate and review the podcast. How do we lean into the tensions of life--the now and not yet? What does it look like to press into the different seasons as they come instead of constantly wanting something different? Author and artist Ruth Chou Simons knows what it is like to live in the hidden places as a mom to six boys. For years, her life centered around changing diapers, preparing meals and bandaging scraped knees. But it was in that time that God taught her the importance of stewarding what she had been given. It was in that mundane, quiet season that God cultivated in her a reliance upon Him. Now, she is a well-known author and artist for her company, Gracelaced, but she will be the first to tell you that her work is simply an overflow of those quiet, hidden, faithful years of doing the work God had called her to in her family. Her latest book, Now and Not Yet: Pressing in When You're Waiting, Wanting, and Restless for More, looks at how to handle those times where your soul is waiting or feeling restless and how to trust God when life isn't what you thought it would be. In this episode, Davey and Ruth have a meaningful discussion about the importance of recognizing your season in life, what restlessness could really be a symptom of, and how so often, we become what we behold. If you have felt yourself in a time of waiting or feeling restless, this conversation will remind you that even in the hidden, unseen moments of your life, God is inviting you to trust and know Him more. My guest this week is Ruth Chou Simons, is a Wall Street Journal bestselling and award-winning author of several books and Bible studies, including GraceLaced, Beholding and Becoming, and When Strivings Cease. She is an artist, entrepreneur, and speaker, using each of her platforms to spiritually sow the Word of God into people's hearts. Through her online shop at GraceLaced.com and her social media community, Simons shares her journey of God's grace intersecting daily life with word and art. Ruth and her husband, Troy, are parents to six boys. Her newest book is, “Pilgrim: 25 Ways God's Character Leads Us Onward.” You are going to love today's conversation! 6:38 – Ruth 101 GraceLaced.com started as a blog. She wanted to write about God's grace. In one decade, she had six boys, started a school and started a church. Her boys are ages 10 to 21. 12:00 – Your unique gifts Use your unique gifts for the glory of God. Ruth loves writing and coloring and painting. Be creative in how you will use your unique giftings for God's glory. 15:59 – Read your Bible Read your Bible. Soak it up. It takes practice to get the rhythm of quieting your heart to hear God's word. 23:23 – Pilgrim Ruth's new book, Pilgrim, is a devotional style book with shorter readings. The book includes Biblical truths and attributes. 29:08 – Remember God's character We need to remember God's character when we're in the wilderness. When we're on a journey, we won't always know why things happen. 34:20 – Go deeper Go deeper in your walk with the Lord. He will lead you on your journey. 37:34 – The unknowns Ruth has been in seasons of unknowns, not knowing how God was going to provide. When you go through major life transitions, every season brings questions you don't have answers to. And that's ok. We're all headed to one destination – and that's to see our Savior face-to-face. FEATURED QUOTES We had six boys, started a school and started a church – all in the same decade. And it was a lot. I've always been someone who sketches and draws. All along, I've always known I was artsy. The truth is, I'm not the most talented watercolorist or artist there is. I just have chosen to use my brush and my paints in a very specific way that has met a need in the body of Christ. Go deeper in your walk with the Lord.
