Send us a textI'm changing things around a bit at the podcast so a bit of housekeeping to start the episode withThis week I'm answering some great questions that I've had.You might have heard me talk about bloating and the impact on diastasis recti before.A great question this week was to do with bloating around your period and whether this also affects diastasis recti recovery. Then I talk a bit about the FODMAP diet as a solution for people who have issues with IBS/bloating etc. I personally think there's a better solution for this group of people and that's journalling. And, finally, I'm talking heavy lifting/deadlifts postpartum. Today's podcast features Bill Hartman and Chris Wicus. Bill Hartman is a physical therapist and in-demand educator with his modern approach to human mechanics and training. Bill has been an influential figure to many guests on this podcast, as well as my own views on training. Chris Wicus is a health and performance professional with 15 years of experience, a former professional ultimate frisbee player, and a 2nd degree black belt in karate. He has coached a wide variety of athletes across 17 sports and has been mentored by many top experts in the field. Bill and Chris host the “Reconsider” podcast together and speak on various cutting-edge approaches to human movement in a way that prompts thinking on existing processes in the field, and how to move forward with current understandings of training and biomechanics. So often in physical training, athletes are told to master the basics of “Squat, Hinge, Push, Pull, Etc.”, but unfortunately, within this framework, there is little to no consideration of how various body types have the capacity to carry out those lifts, and what impact intensifying those movements will have on indivdiuals. On today's show, Bill and Chris speak to the nature of the big lifts (squat, bench, deadlift), and how both “Narrow” and “Wide” ISA athletes (elastic and muscular) will be able to process those movements. We talk about the helical nature of our human design, and how it impacts movement preferences. We also discuss specific strength strategies for athletes who are more narrow and wide, and how to better tailor one's overall strength program to one's athletic needs. So then I start just running more. And by the end of my athletic career was just mostly sprinting and running and not so much of, like, the slow grindy stuff." – Chris Wicus "You look at the difference between 100 meters sprinter, an 800 meters runner, and then a 5K runner, and you're going to see this progressive difference in body type – Bill Hartman “At all measures of scale in a human, all levels of scale. So down to your DNA. So DNA is structured helically. A collagen fiber is structured helically. All of your joints move on helical pathways. So we are helically designed” - Bill Hartman “And so it's not, that narrows can't do deadlifts, but we're going to make modifications that are going to make it more ideal” - Bill Hartman "Too much force production because of the way that we produce force takes away something else that I needed." - Bill Hartman “The best, the most athletic I ever got, I had, like, a 38 inch vertical at one point,

This episode originally dropped on April 5, 2023.What does it mean to be fit? Deadlifting your body weight? Running a 10K? Doing an Ironman? Most of our notions about fitness spotlight the big thing we want to do while glossing over all the smaller, equally important, but less “sexy” stuff like joint mobility, breathing practices, balance, and nutrition it takes to get you there strong and injury-free. Kind of like wanting to climb Mount Everest without spending any time at Base Camp. This week's guest, Juliet Starrett, co-author of the new book Built to Move is all about the Base Camp, especially in midlife and menopause. We dive into Juliet's personal story (including a hippo attack!) as well as the vital signs and foundations menopausal women need to tune into so they can be strong, able, and pain-free for the rest of their active lives. Juliet Starrett is an entrepreneur, attorney, author, and podcaster. She is the former co-founder and CEO of San Francisco CrossFit, one of the first 50 CrossFit affiliates. Juliet is the co-author of the Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Deskbound and co-host of The Ready State Podcast. Before turning her attention to The Ready State and San Francisco CrossFit full time, Juliet was a professional whitewater paddler, winning 3 World Championship and 5 National titles. Welcome to Season 3 and Episode 54 of the Movement Logic podcast! In this episode, Laurel and Sarah discuss dogmatic beliefs and myths around the lower back, upper back, and neck from the yoga, Pilates, and strength training worlds. You will learn: That the spine is made up of over 360 joints so maybe we should move it in all the ways (instead of keep it neutral all the time). That people are really bad at determining what position the spine is in just by observing (says research). That movement variety and movement preparation > “fixing” someone's alignment in a movement. Most yoga teachers never learn how to help their students progressively overload the strength they'd need to actually do the poses they teach. Pain causes people to adopt certain postures, but then what happens is people often flip this in their mind and say that it's the person's suboptimal posture that caused them the pain. Posture neither causes nor predicts pain (says science.) Lumbar flexion is demonized while sitting (don't schlump) or bending forward (don't round your back!) but research has been unable to connect flexing the lumbar spine in these scenarios with low back pain or injury. Deadlifting and squatting have been fearmongered to people who flex their lumbar spines in these exercises, but laboratory equipment has shown that even when it looks like someone has a neutral spine in these exercises, their lumbar spine is actually quite flexed. Any exercise is better than no exercise for low back pain, but no particular exercise is better than any other for low back pain. Why thoracic/upper back “hyper” kyphosis (a rounded upper back) is not a pathology. That back-bending is probably just flat bending in the thoracic spine. That “tech neck” does not predict neck pain. The neck is not a crane, and so we cannot apply the same physics to predict how a forward neck will respond to holding the load of the head forward of the body that we'd use to predict how a crane will respond to holding a load forward of its foundation. People who force their necks to be neutral have more pain than people with tech neck posture.Sign up here for the Live Strength Training Webinar on Sept 14th with 30 day replayResearch mentioned in this episode:Spinal Degeneration in Asymptomatic PopulationsIntervertebral disc herniation: studies on a porcine modelTo flex or not to flex? Oh friends, I'm so excited to share this episode with you! After this conversation with Caroline I went to my local gym and booked some sessions, I was so inspired. I can't imagine anyone will listen to this episode and not get excited to lift some weights or go to the gym. I'm talking to Dr. Caroline Addington, who is a former scientist turned personal trainer, about the joy of deadlifts. Seriously, we love our deadlifts, they make you feel so powerful. Caroline shares all her thoughts about fitness and strength and how women being strong is part of defying the patriarchy because we are not expected to be or look strong. Caroline and I talk about why it is that there are mental blocks for women going to a gym. It's intimidating to step through that door, to step into a world of buff men and equipment that gives us stress. But confronting that anxiety can turn that stress into a positive motivation. There are mental and emotional benefits to taking those steps. I talk about how much I love to deadlift and my new love affair with kettlebells and Caroline and I examine why women are reluctant to do weight training. We examine that fear of being or looking “unfeminine” that is drilled into us and how that's a symptom of the patriarchy. Being at the gym together is an act of solidarity and in defying the criticisms of our bodies. I am so happy about this episode and I hope you are as excited as I am about Caroline's fitness and strength inspiration.About Dr. Caroline Addington:Dr. Caroline Addington is a former scientist turned NASM Certified Personal Trainer who loves helping women lift heavy, get strong and *actually enjoy* the gym. Her latest book, co-authored with her husband and mobility pioneer, Dr. Kelly Starrett is Built to Move: The Ten Essential Habits to Help You Move Freely and Live Fully. Today I'm talking to Clay Cooper, better known online as @discoverydeadlift. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Clay took his weight plates and barbell outside and began doing his deadlift workouts in the great outdoors. Since then, he's rucked barbells and plates to mountains, riverbeds, beaches, and deep into the woods. He's deadlifted across the United States, had interesting encounters with wildlife (and people), and is planning to take his project international in the near future.

This week on The Savvy Cast, Sean Hiller shares about the three most fundamental exercises we should all be doing and why they are so important.  Episode At A Glance: This week on The SavvyCast, I am joined by my son-in-law, Sean Hiller, to discuss the three most important and fundamental exercises. Sean is a PT, DPT, CSCS, and the owner of Vulcan Performance Rehabilitation and Recovery. In this episode, Sean shares just why these movements are so vital to our health as well as how to do them properly.  Who Is Sean Hiller? Dr. Sean Hiller PT, DPT, CSCS is the owner of the Birmingham Alabama-based physical therapy company, Vulcan Performance Rehabilitation and Recovery. Vulcan is a one-on-one physical therapy company with their methodologies based in strength, conditioning, and fitness. They have a location in Mountain Brook, Alabama and Inverness on Hwy 280 in Alabama. The Three Archetypal Movements That Yield The Greatest Health ROI: Hinge/Deadlift- This is the foundation of all movement and therefore the most fundamental movement! These can be as simple as deadlifting kettlebells in your garage. Deadlifting teaches us how to brace our core and control our spine. Squats - Squats are the second most fundamental movement and teach us how to brace our core while we move our hips through space. Overhead press - These can help combat bad posture, especially a tendency to hunch over. Overhead presses are vitally important for the health of our entire upper bodies.  If you have any questions about these movements or general injury questions, you can learn more from Sean and Vulcan on Instagram @vulcanmovement and @seanhiller_physio or check out Vulcan's website here www.vulcanmovement.com. Feel free to email or message them with questions! Questions Answered In This Episode:  Which exercises yield the greatest ROI? Should we squat where our knees go past our toes? What is the proper way to deadlift?  Which exercises help with posture? Should we squat where our hips are below our knees? What is better: the machine or free weights? Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Fall Off The Bone Baby Back Ribs Mimi's Famous Skillet Blackberry Cobbler How to Stay Independent in Older Age with Personalized Fitness Training I hope you enjoyed this episode! Is three heavy sets of deadlifts too much? Why do I include three sets of deadlifts when other programs include just one heavy set of 5 reps? Do compound lifts in general cause central nervous system (CNS) fatigue? I've written and recorded a lot of evidence-based content over the years on just about everything you can imagine related to building muscle, losing fat, and getting healthy. I've also worked with thousands of men and women of all ages and circumstances and helped them get into the best shape of their lives. That doesn't mean you should blindly swallow everything I say, though, because let's face it—nobody is always right about everything. And especially in fields like diet and exercise, which are constantly evolving thanks to the efforts of honest and hardworking researchers and thought leaders. This is why I'm always happy to hear from people who disagree with me, especially when they have good arguments and evidence to back up their assertions. Sometimes I can't get on board with their positions, but sometimes I end up learning something, and either way, I always appreciate the discussion. That gave me the idea for this series of podcast episodes: publicly addressing things people disagree with me on and sharing my perspective. Think of it like a spicier version of a Q&A. So, here's what I'm doing: Every couple of weeks, I'm asking my Instagram followers what they disagree with me on, and then picking the more common or interesting contentions to address here on the podcast. And in this episode, I'll be tackling the following . . . “3 heavy sets of deadlifts is too taxing. It should be 1 set of 5 like Starting Strength.” Timestamps: 0:00 - Try Fortify risk-free today!
