Beyond Pleasure: Three Keys to Truly Fulfilling Sex Sex is at the intersection of life and humanity. For the majority of us, it's how we got here and for parents, it's how we will continue on after we are gone. We often hear the term “better” sex, which begs two questions: what does that mean? And, why is the sex we are currently having not good enough? In this episode we will define the goal of sex - regardless of the stage of the relationship and we will also discuss what prevents us from having sex that lives up to our desired potential. I'm going to take you on a journey as we explore the three sexual freedoms. Starting with discussing the power of freedom to, which I think describes the stage that myself and my husband/ the creative director of this podcast, Jared Brady are in. Then freedom from, which I discuss with my friends Yancy and Premika Leo. Finally we will talk about the Freedom not to, which I explore with my Lovers Community. What creates good sex? Co- creation. Most women have some kind of sexual trauma! Feeling safe to be with whatever happens. Ok to say no! No pressure to have sex even though there is sexual energy and he gets a boner. Confidence work, Holding a rejection, Accepting a sexual rejection, Being with the inner child who cannot handle sexual rejection. Being with discomfort of a no. Rejection sucks, can we handle a no? Vulnerable and scary initiating. Meeting all vulnerability with love and compassion, also sexual interest, instead off fear. Dealing with rejection. Daring to reject and handling their reaction. Don't want to do something with someone who don't want to do it with us. Communication and being clear about what we ask for. Stop assuming and start asking questions, specify, be curios, what do you want? Nothing or could you want something. Exploring how to be me with you. Dare asking questions, being vulnerable and sharing impact. Being ok with other people's feelings. Your feelings aren't my responsibility. Community - a place where you can explore being more of you and evolve. People we trust and who are there for us. Feeling safe. Support system outside our partnerships and families. How to find the community for you? Practice and show instead of explaining theories. Many lower libido people say things like, "You got off, what more could you want?" This is not badly intentioned, but comes from a place of not understanding much about sex. Having an orgasm means nothing about the quality of sex just like having had a meal means nothing about the quality of the food. With over 70 published articles, Dr. Hargons has made substantial contributions to the field. Her debut book titled Good Sex will be published in February 2025. Some of the specific topics we discuss in this episode include: What does it really mean to be voluntarily celibate? Why might someone choose to take a break from sex for a while? Why does voluntary celibacy seem to be more popular among women than men? What are the potential benefits and challenges of celibacy? If you’re taking a break from sex, how can you make the most of it? You can check out Candice’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? When it comes to having sex, there are a lot of “rules” that what we’re supposed to follow. But many of those rules contradict one another, making it hard to know what to do. In today’s show, we’re going to discuss whether we should even be following the “rules” of sex in the first place. We're also going to explore how to increase your sexual self-understanding, as well as tips for having better sex. I am joined once again by Todd Baratz, a licensed psychotherapist and sex therapist with an innovative approach to mental health and relationships. He runs the popular social media account @yourdiagnonsense and is author of the new book How To Love Someone Without Losing Your Mind. Some of the topics we cover in this episode include: What are the six keys to good sex? What does it mean to approach sex as a performance, and how can we avoid this? Why is it actually a good thing to be a little bit selfish when it comes to sex? How can we learn to better assert our sexual desires and communicate boundaries?
