In early ‘80s California, a new kind of music was brewing that blended the psychedelic sounds of the '60s with the modern day post-punk ethos. This week, hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot reflect on the Paisley Underground movement. They'll discuss the prominent bands like The Bangles, explore what made the scene so special and explain its impact on indie rock. Jim and Greg will also look back at the 1964 hit by The Shangri-Las, "Leader of the Pack," almost 60 years later. Plus, they'll review the new record from The Hives. Before becoming the author of such classics as Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma, Jane Austen experimented with various writing styles as a teenager in the early 1790s. This is a collection of her juvenilia, including the epistolary novels Love and Freindship, Lesley Castle, and Lady Susan, as well as her comic History of England and some shorter pieces. This week's story is 'Henry & Eliza' from Jane Austen's Juvenilia collection. The story is a savagely comedic parody which takes aim at the 'virtuous heroine'. We discuss Jane Austen's life, the themes she wrote about and more.
Tales by the Fireside - Bedtime stories and sleep meditation
Tonight's story, is "Love and Friendship", part of Jane Austen's "Juvenilia", a collection of short stories and novels she wrote in her youth. This particular story was written in around 1790, when she was just a young girl. This is a tale of fortunes and favours, of suitors and supplicants, of swooning and sensibilities. Of love, and tragedy. In the form of several letters, a woman explains her hardships and trials living in an 18th century Britain. If you enjoy this episode, please let me know by leaving a rating or review and subscribing to Tales by the Fireside. Sorely was killed by a sniper in 1915 while serving on the Western Front. This poem, written in pencil, was found amongst his belongings. The few poems he had written were collected and published in January 1916 as ‘Marlborough and other poems'. This is taken from the slightly enlarged second edition of February 1916. Had Sorely lived and continued to write, most of the poems in the book would probably have been filed away as ‘Juvenilia'. As it was, he didn't get to revise any of them for publication. He has been particularly well-served by Jean Moorcraft Wilson who not only wrote a Biography but collected and edited his letters and his poems. You can read more about Sorely here: https://ladygodivaandme.blogspot.com/2017/05/charles-hamilton-sorely-footnote-poet.html
