You can inspire motivated people. And you can encourage those who aren't to seek it.” “The truth sucks sometimes to hear, but you would much rather have somebody that's going to tell you the truth that's going to help you than the person that's going to lie to you.” “Improvement requires intentionality.” “You've got to take time to define what success looks like to you, and not necessarily what you think it should be based on what you see on social media.” “When you own and work through your mess, and can say, ‘Hey, here's what I did. 84. 4 Methods to Implement Gamification to Reach Our Goals

Monetization Nation Podcast

Welcome back to the second episode of a Monetization Nation interview with Redge Allen. In the previous episode, we went through Redge's story and how he became a revolutionary entrepreneur. We discussed the importance of building skyscrapers on land we own, creating relationships with our clients, recognizing the lifetime value of a customer, and maintaining credibility and transparency.  In this episode, we will discuss the gamification Redge and I have implemented to help us reach our goals. Proper goal setting and careful, thought-out plans of action can help us in many ways. They can help us become a better person, spouse, parent, entrepreneur, etc. Redge and his system for gamifying goals has had a big impact on the goals I have set for myself in recent years.  Some of my goals I have tried to do for years, and have failed at for years. But, by implementing a system of gamification, I've become more successful with my goals. The inspiration for my goal gamification came from a TEDx Talk that Redge gave, called “5 Minutes of Courage,” which is about habits. You can find the link to his TEDx Talk down below in the “Connect with Redge” section.  This second episode with Redge explores the methods he has adopted in gamifying his goals, as well as in helping others to reach their goals.    Identify Behaviors in Setting Goals & Change   Before I set my goals, I ask, “What are the most important things I want to achieve?” Then, I set my goals based upon the most important things I can do to achieve those goals.  “There's something really powerful about focusing on our behaviors. Writing them down and having evidence of them allows us to see them. It becomes more real and allows for momentum to continue.” - Redge Allen Redge is also a big proponent of identifying which behaviors he can control in his success.    Take Control Where Control Can Be Taken   About ten years ago, Redge used to be morbidly obese, and he had no idea how he would break some of the patterns he had in his life. “I think people set goals and hope they'll lose 50 pounds. But, that's a lot harder to control than it is to say. If I spend my effort on things I can control, then I can guarantee success in my own way rather than spending my efforts and resources on things I can't control.”  Redge then went on to explain that when we identify daily behaviors, it helps move us to who we want to become. That is where the real power is. Redge said, “Sometimes entrepreneurs and others spend so much energy thinking about things that they can't control that they forget about what daily behaviors will absolutely move them to what they want for the future.” Say my goal is to make $10,000 a month in recurring revenue. What am I going to do today to make the first $10? What are the things I'm going to do every single day to work toward that goal?  For Redge, one of the tectonic shifts in his life is when he went from being acted upon and thinking that things just happen, to making things happen and having an internal focus of control. He said, “All of a sudden, I realized I can be the author. I can be the creator, and I can have something come from nothing but my actions.”   Personal Accountability with External Help   When Redge originally wanted to lose weight, he realized there was something missing. He had the discipline but needed structure to know how to be successful. “I started using technology to publish my goals or my daily behaviors. I started with a Google document; I've later moved on to an app called HabitShare. But basically, I am putting in the daily behaviors I plan to have. I'm then finding accountability partners who care about my success, who are willing to check my goals daily and to see if I completed them. I do the same for them, and it reciprocates that way.” Redge is one of my accountability partners; I report to him and nine other men I respect that will hold me accountable. Each day I report how I did on my goals in a spreadsheet that they can see.   Leverage Consequences   On top of that accountability, Redge uses consequences to make sure he completes his goals. He does this to build trust with himself and keep his commitments with himself. So when he doesn't complete one of his goals, he has a consequence. For example, if he doesn't work out one day, his consequence is donating $100 to the politician he dislikes the most. As we can imagine, it's a pretty strong motivator. “If the consequence is more painful than the pain of doing a goal, then I'll do the goal . . . [and] very rarely will I miss.” - Redge Allen Key Takeaways Thank you so much Redge for sharing your stories and goal gamification strategies with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Goal gamification is a great way to help us reach our goals. We need to identify the most important actions that will help us achieve the goals that are most important to us. Take control where we can and focus on what is within our control. Do something today and consistently work towards our big goals. Find others who will help by holding us accountable for our daily goals and habits. Leverage positive and negative consequences to help motivate us to reach our goals. Money Made Easy

We’re welcoming back to the show today one of our favorites - Kate who is @thatdebtfreelife on instagram to talk all about becoming debt free and what’s next. Of course, we wanted to hear about how if felt to be free of debt. Kate shared that it felt free and made her feel invincible. First, Kate and her family went on a dream trip to New York at Christmastime. After their trip they then got back into their financial goals pretty quickly. Saving up a bigger emergency fund was their biggest goal. Kate really hasn’t changed much in the way she manages her finances. She still creates a zero based budget for every paycheck and she budgets it down to the penny. Kate can’t live without it because she knows exactly where her money is going when she has it done. Kate is still working overtime to reach her financial goals. Catching up on retirement contributions and funding the 529 for her son are both important and they also made a 6 year plan to pay off the mortgage. Kate feels the most important things that helped her payoff her debt were the zero based budget and 15 no spend days every month. With 15 no spend days per month that translates into 6 months of not spending but in bite sized chunks. She uses the HabitShare app. This year, they were able to pay cash for their fence. Kate also opened a Roth IRA for the first time in her life and funded that. They also purchased kitchen appliances and redid their laundry room. Kate also paid cash for Invisalign. Spending more time at home becomes more enjoyable. Angelica share how another one of our former guests, Lupe Prado, talks about tolerations. Little things that crowd our mind and how getting those small things taken care of make our life more enjoyable. When first starting to pay off her debt, Kate realized if she spent her money with intention and allocated it properly she would be able to do it. She could meet all the goals she thought were out of reach before. Starting @thatdebtfreelife on Instagram and making the promise to herself to post something once daily about something finance related made her think about it and focus on it. The accountability of that also helped keep her on track. Even just checking your bank balance every day can make you more aware and intentional. Starting with the small things and giving yourself grace can really help you not get overwhelmed and make forward progress. Let yourself be a beginner, resist those impulse purchases, make mistakes and give yourself some grace - you’re not going to be perfect ever. Kate has never written a perfect budget. To budget on an irregular income, list your expenses from most important to least important and then as your money comes in you pay your bills in that order. Then after paying the things you have to take care of you can make your debt payments and other things. If you have irregular income, Kate also recommends creating a buffer or a cushion fund. in addition to your emergency fund, set aside some money so if things fall short or you’re hit with an unexpected expense, you have a bit of a buffer or cushion to carry you through. If you have trouble with impulse shopping, then going through your house and looking for things to sell can help you buy more intentionally. One of Kate’s favorite quotes is, “Look around you, all of that stuff used to be money.” Kate thinks if you have money, you need a budget. You need to know what can you do with your money. Where some people might feel living with a budget is stressful, she feels it’s freeing and so much less stress. This leads to some bad choices and heaven the weight gain. Meanwhile, I am starting to exercise more. In examining myself, it doesn't take much to notice that my problem is staying consistent. I lose weight, and I find weight. So I went digging to find out how to keep goals in front of you that keep you moving toward your goal don't bite off too much and leave you're discouraged don't leave you bored to where you quit   My Goal This Month is 1 LB a Week I started April at 223 lbs, and I want to be 219 at the end. As I write this on 4/18 I am .57 lbs behind my target weight. Like many goals, I came out of the gate and was ahead of schedule but then got lazy and now I'm struggling. The good news is by being able to see how I was ahead/behind it inspires me to stay on track.  Now if for whatever reason, I can get achieve my goal of 1 lb a week, then maybe next month I will drop to .75lbs a week. Without making the goal so easy that you are bored, you want it to push you. For me, it is something I focus on from the moment I wake up. It requires my attention. For you, you may be able to lose 1 lb a week in your sleep. That's fine, and this is key. Find a goal that works for you.  Try Not to Repeat Bad Behaviors In the book Atomic Habits (finally finished the book) he mentions having goals and having daily strategies and he said something that is inspiring me. You're not going to be perfect, but when you see on one day you don't achieve a goal, do your best to avoid missing two days in a row.  In the past I've mentioned I use an app called Way of Life and I also tried HabitShare (which is very similar but you can share your habits with an accountability partner) that I have specified meal goals and activity goals. I could see where my lunch meal was consistently going over calories. Without starving myself I reduced the portion size and now I'm back on goal. I'm Testing The Streaks I just heard about a new app that I have not tried called "Streaks"  STREAKS. The to-do list that helps you form good habits. Apple Design Award winner. Track up to twelve tasks you want to complete each day. Your goal is to build a streak of consecutive days. * Streaks automatically knows when you complete tasks linked to the Health app * Streaks reminds you. It's $4.99 and only works on iOs/Apple (including the watch). If you are primarily using it to track exercise they have a specific app for that at https://streaksworkout.com/ Never Break The Chain These streaks app can help you see just how good or bad you are doing (you do need the discipline to enter the data, but that's the good news you can track as little or as much info as you want. For me, when I have to put in that I didn't meet my daily calorie goals, the next day (trying to avoid having two in a row) I feel inspired.  Do What Works For You Find your sweet spot where you have challenging goals that keep you motivated, and most importantly you can sustain in the long run. You are not going to burn yourself out, and you're not going to bore yourself. There is only one person who knows you, your heart, and your dedication. If you start off with a goal that you can't reach, be sure to add the word yet to that statement. Lower the bar slightly and come up with a goal you can reach. Do that goal consistently, and then raise the bar.  Become a Logical Loser! I was reading the book the 5 AM Miracle, and I really liked one part of it where the author had you filling out a spreadsheet outlining the tasks you wanted to accomplish each day to achieve your goals. The problem with this idea is I wanted to update it on my phone. While you can use google sheets, it was just clinky. I had previously talked about the free app Habitshare which is great for sharing your progress with people (look for me under logicalloss@gmail.com) who then can nudge you to keep you accountable.  So I set up some tasks and aligned them on when they should be done during the day. I also have the app set up to send me alerts (for example 15 minutes before lunch alert me to take my pre-lunch supplements).  By doing this, I have found I'm starting great, and starting with lunch, things go downhill. While my breakfast and snacks are on target, my lunch and dinner meals are not. This is not the end of the world, this is just helping me ID what the issues are so I can come up with a new game plan. One thing I'm trying is instead of cutting things out, just eat less of them. For example, on lunch I would eat two skinless chicken thighs and a bag of broccoli. Now I meat eat one thigh. If I eat a salad, no more cheese, and maybe one hard boiled egg instead of two.  I've been traveling and speaking. This keeps me beyond busy, and I just got home from Florida (it takes a week to get caught up) and now I'm getting ready to go to San Diego where I will be speaking at Social Media Marketing world. So I'm going to try to get some episodes in. Please don't give up on me, things will get better in March. I plan on really buckle down, and get this weight back off. Figure Out What Is Wrong and Then Make Changes The Habitshare app for me made it easy to throughout the day check in on my goals. Then looking back at the week see exactly what is going wrong and try to come up with a game plan to fix it.  Give THE IDEA a shot if you're not a fan of apps. Write down the tasks you need to do every day to help you with your weight loss goals. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF if you didn't do it, don't mark that you did. By behind honest, you can see what is working and what is not.

Conventional wisdom tells us that success takes time…sometimes a long time. Well, I think we’ve been lied to, and I can prove it. In this episode I’m going to give you a set of tools that will put you on the pathway to a brand new you in seven short days, but as you’ll find out, I believe that success can happen in an instant. If it's still available, you should get it. But reading this book triggered a memory for me of something I learned from Frank about the two trees. In the beginning there were two trees, The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and the Tree of Life. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is the serpent's promise. He promised, “You will be like God, and you will decide for yourself what is good.” This is what Jesus referred to when He was talking about the “leaven” of the Pharisees. Jesus is the Tree of Life (see John 15) this is the forgotten tree. This is the one we don't talk about. When we choose the forgotten tree, we take the life of God into ourselves. The Pharisees, meanwhile, ate from the first tree, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and so do many or most modern churches. These are the people with the protest signs, with the signs about the groups that they hate, with the signs about how America is being punished for its sins, because they are only conscious of the knowledge of good and evil. Better that we eat from the Tree of Life, Jesus. There's a term that's applied to Christians quite often. People say we are “People of the Book.” We are not. We are not a people of the Book. We are a people of the Person. And the Person is He whose birth we celebrate today, on the day this show is being released, Jesus Christ. He is the Tree of Life. We must begin living under the forgotten tree (the Tree of Life) rather than eating the fruit of the forbidden one. Merry Christmas! Tip of the Week My Tip of the Week is the HabitShare app. This is an amazing free habit-tracking app that I was turned on to by my friend Cliff Ravenscraft, and I was sold on it immediately. This is a cool habit-tracking app because it allows you to share habits that you're trying to form with friends, so you get extra motivation and accountability. It's very simple to use. You can set prompts to help you remember to do your new habits, you can create custom habits that fit your specific goals, and you can make them daily or weekly. If privacy is a concern, you can control which of your habits your friends see and which ones they can't. I love this app and I recommend you check it out. They've got it both for the Apple platform and for Android, so anybody can use it.
