Raising Healthy Mothers

This episode has been a long time coming. This month marks 5 years since I started specialising in motherhood. And this episode is the culmination of everything I've learned so far in the journey. When I started out I focused mainly on nutrition and diet. But while the information I had about a healthy pregnancy, postpartum recovery and replenished motherhood was sound and had the potential to be life-changing, the actual reality of making those changes was much harder. I've found it hard, and so have my clients: We'd talk about a more nutritious breakfast but realised they could barely keep their eyes open first thing in the morning to start scrambling eggs We'd add in supplements but their brain fog was so bad they forgot to take them We'd discuss mindful eating but they were so caught up in their toddler's fussy eating they could barely sit down to eat There was a huge gap between what was ideal pregnancy and motherhood nutrition - and what was actually attainable for a mother living a real motherhood with a small or non-existent village. I quickly noticed that helping people them with just their diet wasn't rewarding for them or me. That there was so much more to health and wellbeing that was getting in the way of them being able to make those dietary changes. So over the years I've developed my 5-pillar Motherhood RESET Method that encompasses much more than nutrition and diet. And in this episode I'm diving deep into each pillar and what they mean for a nourished motherhood: How harnessing your rhythms of your day, month and year helps to manage the natural ebbs and flows of energy - without changing anything else The two parts to eating that make you feel energised and well-nourished – without using fancy ingredients The two questions to ask about sleep - that has nothing to do with your children's sleep Why movement and exercise are so key in motherhood - for your lifelong health How prioritising time for you underpins all the pillars - and why it's often the most elusive for mothers I end the episode with a short assessment for you to pinpoint exactly which pillar you need to work on - because it's different for everyone. To download my free guide 10 Daily Strategies to Unlock More Energy (even if you have a toddler!), click here. In other words, prioritize those things that are important to you and focus on them. I shared my “glass balls,” I hope these inspire you to find yours. Thank you for listening! For many, the mother-daughter relationship can be complicated. Throw food and body image into the mix, and there are bound to be challenges. But our mothers play such an integral part in our food stories. They're the first ones to feed us. We bond with them over food, and we inherit some of their patterns, tastes, and eating issues. Then we may pass this all on to our daughters… Peggy and Megan Curry, the mother-daughter duo behind Curry Girls Kitchen, make it look seamless and easy. But their relationship wasn't always so smooth. And, ironically, this pair's biggest pain point used to be food.  When the entire family was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, Peggy set out to heal her loved ones by changing their diets and habits while Megan felt restricted and just wanted to be a “normal” kid.  Now seventeen years later, the Curry Girls have embraced a delicious gluten-free life and exemplify how we can come together to create a healthy mother-daughter food story. In this episode you'll learn: Ingredients for a healthy family food dynamic The symptoms of gluten intolerance and how it affects your mind and body  How to overcome limiting beliefs and improve self-esteem Ways to strengthen the mother-daughter bond  The one ritual to try to do every single night You'll feel inspired to cook, eat, and connect with your mother and/or daughter! When it comes to giving birth, women are too often told a healthy baby is all that matters. And while none of us will argue that a healthy mom and baby are the highest priority, it’s time to give mothers the respect, dignity, and agency they deserve in their birth experiences.Milli Hill is the author of “Give Birth Like a Feminist” and “The Positive Birth Book”, and is here to tell you that women matter, too. Because how we give birth stays with us the rest of our lives. Milli believes birth is a feminist issue and asks women to no longer allow birth to be left in the hands of patriarchal control and dominance. In today’s episode, she offers practical steps you can take to claim your birth power and have your safest, best birth. You know, I get a lot of questions about how to build or maintain good relationships in family. And I especially get questions about how to have good relationships between my kids and me. So today, I invited my 29-year-old daughter, Emily Boone, on the show to talk all things about the mother daughter relationship. We talk about a lot of things including what healthy boundaries look like between us. We also talk about what she wished she could have told me when she was younger. And oh my gracious. If you’re in the middle of mothering, you’ve just got to hear that. It will encourage you and challenge you. And it might just make you cry. If you haven’t heard: Emily is going to be at The Grace Gathering in Austin on April 12th! She’ll be sharing about some really big transitions in her life as a newlywed in a new city, figuring out all kinds of things, and the inevitable loneliness and confusion that we all feel in those kinds of big transitions. If you’re listening and you’re in any kind of transition like: the big jump from high school to college or college to post grad or maybe even the really big jump from mom and dad’s house to doing married life as a young wife, Emily will have some incredible things for you to hear about at the Grace Gathering. As will Honey Holden, Hayley Morgan and my youngest daughter, Sara Regan. Yep we’ll all be together on stage and I’d love for you to be there too!
