Summary: Howdy, partners! Stop number three on our road trip this summer is the Lone Star state - Texas! Join Holly and Devin as they take a romp around the second largest state in the union. It's huge, it's hot and as Holly underlines, tensions tend to run high. A melting pot of the West, the South, American and Mexican influences, Texas really does have it all. Holly and Devin share the ends of the spectrum with their books today. Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:55): Devin discussed Pumpkin by Julie Murphy, a novel that follows Waylon Russell Brewer as his private, quiet drag aspirations are exploded into the public sphere after his audition tape for Fiercest of Them All (a drag show à la RuPaul's Drag Race) is released. As a cruel joke, he and his twin sister's girlfriend Hannah Perez are nominated as Prom Queen and King respectively. Instead of caving to the bullies, Waylon and Hannah decide to play to win. Devin's key takeaways were: This is such a gay book; it's amazing, it's flamboyant, it's loud and proud and includes so much drag. Waylon and his twin Clementine are both gay and we meet a myriad of other queer characters throughout. Whether some characters are already out or not, this book vibrates with positive energy for the queer community. When you hear about a queer book set in Texas, you go in assuming a central tension will be community rejection of the queer character but that was not the case in this book. Waylon's parents accept him and his sister right away and there's a Prism group of fully out high school students - most people aren't repressed and even one character comes out during the book. Yes there's bullying and vitriol but the school supports LGBTQ students and the tone overall is uplifting and supportive. As a high school story, this book explores the evolving sense of self we all remember from that age. While the focus is on Waylon with a first-person narrative structure, we see every character in the book evolve who they believe they are into who they can be. The Dagger (15:47): Holly discussed Bluebird Bluebird by Attica Locke, a literary mystery set in East Texas in 2016. We follow Darren Matthews, a Texas Ranger who has recently been suspended and is called over to Shelby County to help investigate two bodies, one of which recently washed up on the shore of a local woman's back yard. Holly's key takeaways were: Racial tensions abound in this novel. The bodies found were a Black man from Chicago and a local white woman. Darren also struggles with his own identity as a Black man and having to balance being a Texas Ranger with wanting to do right by his community, including the Black community that congregates at Geneva's. Locke underlines the importance and value of community, particularly how the Black community in the town has had to find joy and safety where they can. How places like Geneva's serve as a haven for locals or anyone passing through. Darren's career has put strain on his relationship w his wife Lisa, so he's also navigating being recently kicked out and wanting to go back, while also not wanting to give up his purpose or turn down cases like these. Hot On the Shelf (34:25): Devin: Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man by Violet Marsh Holly: Like Mother, Like Daughter by Kimberly McCreight What's Making Our Hearts Race (38:12): Devin: Riding a horse! Holly: X-Men 97 Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

LIKE MOTHER, 8min., Canada Directed by Lisa Drupsteen A young woman navigates her romantic life while trying her best to dodge her mother's demons. Will she have the strength to break the cycle of manipulation? Or simply fall victim to the old adage: “Like Mother, Like Daughter”… https://www.instagram.com/lisa_drupsteen Get to know the filmmaker: A short story I wrote while a student at The Second City Film School (formally the Harold Ramis Film School) featured a zany, narcissistic mother who named pets after loved ones. For our first encore episode, we chose the inspiring pair of Michelle and Joan MacDonald. Not only are they glorious examples of what a healthy body can achieve after midlife, they seem to have an enviable mother-daughter bond that is beautiful to witness. These women broke the internet after Michelle, a body builder and transformation coach, guided her then 70-year-old mother through a process that resulted in life-changing weight loss and the subsequent elimination of a slew of health problems. Joan's before and after photos can be found at Train with Joan, and you should take a peek before listening to understand the full impact of what these women achieved together. If you know you know with this week's episode title. That's right, we're talking about that pesky little thing called money. Wealth (or lack thereof) is one of the most consistent themes (and sources of conflict) within the entire show. In this episode we'll be discussing its effect on our Gilmore Girls and their choices and relationships. We'll also finally be answering a question we posed multiple times in season one, being: Can you really run away from wealth? Welcome back! This week we tackle Season 2: Episode 7: Like Mother, Like Daughter. This is an episode that has a lot to do with accepting who you are and sticking to that no matter what you're told by the outside world (something we know all too well). We discuss the love of Rory embracing who she is and not backing down, Lorelai mirroring that by joining the booster club and doing things in her own fashion (get it?), and how both girls learn that they can fit into different scenarios their own way. Let's embrace what we know about ourselves and discuss this episode with a little compassion, while also enjoying how absolutely ridiculous Lorelai behaves at the end, shall we? Fathers, in particular, often led their remarkable daughters to find great success in the arts, and Marietta Robusti was no exception: her dear old dad was none other than Tintoretto, a Venetian master. But did Tintoretto's adoration of his daughter hold her back from achieving greater heights? On episode 21 of Raw Intentions, we give a warm welcome to my ever so fabulous mom and dad! That's right; after much convincing and coercing, we sat down on the couch in my childhood home in Madison, AL, and pressed record. We chatted about their background, how they met, fun travel stories, and how annoying I was as a young lass. Past tense though! Was! I am cool and chill now. Right guys?? Anyways, so thankful to have parents like these; parents that i continue to grow with and learn from. I love them both more than life itself, and I'm happy you get a small glimpse of who they are. When Todd's daughter, Sofia, told him she wanted to write about autism for her end-of-year middle school research paper, Todd was both excited and anxious. Both the anxiety and excitement came from wondering what parts of her life experience with autism she incorporated into herself. The connective conversation that took place and became s2. E5. N15. of the Otherness Podcast titled Like Father Like Daughter. A Family Discussion About Autism. The tables of the Otherness Podcast are turned as Todd is interviewed by his daughter, Sofia. She asks intuitive questions about how Todd understands challenges hospitals have with engaging families affected by autism, the changing landscape from finding a “cure” for autism towards community and cultural support, and what she was surprised to learn in her research about how autism is actually a part of all of us. “Embracing autism is embracing the human condition”Like many of us, Todd has understood it is hard to “leave your work at the office”, especially when you spend it with families facing all of the challenges of autism as he does. He realized that his daughter, Sofia, was incorporating some of the spoken and unspoken lessons she learned about autism into her own ideas and questions. This led her to write a research paper on autism for a middle school project and was able to explore what we know and don't know about autism. “I never thought of it as weird, it was just who my uncle was.”Todd has always wanted Sofia to form her own voice, which she did. While some of her views overlap with her father, some do not. Their discussion helped Todd realize that the children watching us try to “figure out autism” are actually growing up in an environment where they actually experience autism with those around them. Sofia not only learned about autism from growing up with her Uncle Jay, but saw communities embracing those with special needs. This brings normalcy to relationships grown in autism. She never viewed Jay as anything but her uncle and describes how she can relate to some of his autism traits for herself as we all need tools to cope that may involve repetition and order. They also discuss caring for people with autism in schools, hospitals, and therapy sessions while reflecting on what Jay experienced and what they have seen around them today.s2. E5.
