There is no one size fits all for health. Luckily, we now realize the personalization of wellness and how many factors such as sleep, exercise, mindset, spirituality, and general lifestyle patterns affect your overall well-being. As the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's (IIN) business and community leader and head coach, Jim Curtis has his finger on the pulse of exactly what's happening in wellness. He believes that when we adopt a holistic approach to nourishing our minds and bodies, we can feel our best individually and collectively. While the food you eat makes a big difference, your health is determined by much more than what's on your plate. You must also nourish the areas of your life that feed your soul, including positive relationships, a fulfilling career, and finding joy and purpose. This is the concept of integrative nutrition – the integration of all dimensions of your well-being to achieve true health and happiness. In this episode, you'll learn: How IIN paved the way in integrative nutrition for the last 30 years The way food changes everything from your mind to your body to your mood The major cause of inflammation and how to reduce it An approach to get your family and friends to be part of your healthy lifestyle Why bio-individuality is the key to listening to your unique body The biggest wellness trends for 2023 (They're good!) You'll feel inspired to focus on your own holistic health journey, trust that you know what's best for you, and as Jim suggests, make more friends along the way. Tweetables: “Wellness should be accessible to everyone. Knowledge should be accessible to everyone. And sometimes you have to invest in yourself so that you can get educated. That's what we do at IIN.” — Jim Curtis [0:10:02] “Food changes everything. This week, I'm excited to welcome Elise Museles to the podcast. She is formerly known as Kale & Chocolate, an attorney turned certified eating psychology & nutrition expert. She helps thousands of women change their food stories. Some questions asked during this episode: How did you come up with the concept of food Story? What is “Food Noise” and why is it so harmful? What is “The Chocolate Meditation” and its significance? https://180nutrition.com.au/ This week, I'm excited to welcome Elise to the podcast. Elise is an attorney turned certified eating psychology and nutrition expert. She's the creator of the Food Story platform with a mission to empower women to create healthier relationship with their food and their bodies by changing what's on their plate and what's in their minds. In this episode, we discuss the concept of Food Story. Discover why food noise can throw us off track and uncover the significance of the chocolate meditation. Over to Elise. Hey, guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition and I am delighted to welcome Elise to the podcast. Elise, how are you? Elise (01:27) I am good. Thank you so much for having me on and being open to sharing Food Story with your listeners. Stu (01:35) Look, I cannot wait to dig in to the story and all of your wisdom that you have to share as well this morning. But first up for all of our listeners that may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself, please. Elise (01:48) Okay, sure. Well, I always start with that. I grew up in Los Angeles. That kind of says it all, maybe we can finish. But I grew up in LA, always interested in health, wellness, and it bordered on obsession at a younger age. But then I pivoted though. I had a career in law and I was an immigration lawyer before I got into health and wellness. I am a mom; a dog mom, and a boy mom. I am certified in holistic nutrition and eating psychology. And really, the eating psychology is like where I spend most of my time trying to support people, because it is about helping people with their mindset around food. There's so much information on what to eat. At first I started with people on what to eat, but I realized really quickly that that's only half the story with nutrition. Really, how we eat and why we eat, and all those other factors really play a role. So I got certified in eating psychology. This was in 2012. Ever since then, I've never looked back. I always say that I help people with what's on their plate and what's in their mind. Have you ever wondered how the food choices you make every day impact your hormones, your happiness, and the health of our planet? Brittany Fuisz, culinary chef and founder of Malibu Mylk, believes it's all connected! While trying to get pregnant, Brittany was struggling to conceive and visited a fertility doctor who recommended an elimination diet. When she cut out dairy, nuts, gluten and soy, she began searching for a milk alternative. That's when the idea hit: Can you make milk from flaxseed? Turns out you can! Flax milk is not only allergen-free, but it also has a creamy texture without any gums or fillers. Brittany knew she had to share this incredible product with the whole world, and that's when Malibu Mylk was born. At the same time, she learned that while strict diets might sometimes be medically necessary, there is a way to be conscious about your food choices and truly enjoy what you're eating! In this episode you'll learn: How your diet can impact your hormones and fertility in unexpected ways Some unknown ingredients and problems of popular plant-based milks Why flaxseeds are truly a superfood for you and the planet The importance of fiber for blood sugar and digestion How to feel less stress around food for balance and happiness After listening, you'll feel empowered to eat in a way that's good for you (and the environment) but also brings you pleasure too. When it comes to food, everyone has a story. The way you feel about food, think about food, deprive yourself or overindulge, the specific things you crave…There's a story behind it. Your food story is a big swirl of many things: how you were raised; the messages you received from influential people and absorbed from the media; your positive memories and your painful memories about food. All of it comes together to create thoughts and patterns that directly impact your health and happiness. The bottom line: Finding peace with food isn't about eating more kale, drinking more water, or doing more yoga. It's about unlocking your inner narrative about what you eat and why you eat what you do. Here to talk to us today about food stories is Elise Museles! Elise Museles holds four certificates in holistic health and integrative healing. A frequent speaker, Elise is also host of the popular Once Upon a Food Story podcast. In this powerful interview, Elise breaks down why understanding and transforming our food story is key to changing our unwanted food and body challenges. For many, the mother-daughter relationship can be complicated. Throw food and body image into the mix, and there are bound to be challenges. But our mothers play such an integral part in our food stories. They're the first ones to feed us. We bond with them over food, and we inherit some of their patterns, tastes, and eating issues. Then we may pass this all on to our daughters… Peggy and Megan Curry, the mother-daughter duo behind Curry Girls Kitchen, make it look seamless and easy. But their relationship wasn't always so smooth. And, ironically, this pair's biggest pain point used to be food. When the entire family was diagnosed with gluten intolerance, Peggy set out to heal her loved ones by changing their diets and habits while Megan felt restricted and just wanted to be a “normal” kid. Now seventeen years later, the Curry Girls have embraced a delicious gluten-free life and exemplify how we can come together to create a healthy mother-daughter food story. In this episode you'll learn: Ingredients for a healthy family food dynamic The symptoms of gluten intolerance and how it affects your mind and body How to overcome limiting beliefs and improve self-esteem Ways to strengthen the mother-daughter bond The one ritual to try to do every single night You'll feel inspired to cook, eat, and connect with your mother and/or daughter! So your food story is a big swirl of many things. It's the way you were raised. It's the messages about food you received from your family and other influential people in your life. It's the advertisements that you absorbed from the media. It's your positive memories of food and your painful memories of food, and all of that comes together to create a story, which I call your food story, your beliefs about food and the words you say to yourself about food, either inside your own mind privately or out loud. 5:29 And the further I got into conversations and the more I got into looking at it as a story, the more that I could see that people could understand where some of their behaviors came from or their patterns. And it released a lot of that guilt and shame and blame even.7:22 If a listener is going back and finding a painful moment, and it could be from a parent or a caretaker who might've said something that stuck with them for a long time or had a behavior that you know, or made you clean your plate or whatever it might be, that we have to always remember that they were well-intentioned and doing what they knew. You know, like nobody wants to impart a negative or traumatic relationship with food. And so I want to make sure that there's not that like, you know, that we, we realize we can forgive and people, they had good intentions and didn't know better.9:13 Identifying what are some of the major themes will just get you started thinking about your food story. What was the culture like growing up? What was it like at your dinner table? What was your, for many people the mom plays a big role in their food story. So what was your mom's relationship with food and how did she talk about it? Or your dad or whoever your caregiver, your main, the main person in your life who, you know, cooked for you or provided for you. What did they talk about when it came to food and their bodies? What did you observe as a child? Because oftentimes that affects you. 15:38 So what happens when you're stressed, as you release more cortisol and then your digestion isn't as efficient, your metabolism slows down. It goes way back into you know that original flight or fight mode, and then you don't assimilate all your nutrients as well. In addition to that, I mean, how much pleasure could you possibly be getting from your food, which I think is an important part of the eating experience, when you're constantly thinking those thoughts?16:28 I realized, oh, just because I'm the poster child of kale, quinoa and superfood smoothies, I'm actually thinking thoughts that are like creating this [negative] response. So, you know, this stress is acting as an anti nutrient. So that's when I realized that, what I said at the beginning, what's in your mind is just as important as what's on your plate.18:46 Remember there's no such thing as good or bad foods. So that's why I'm saying it like that, but it doesn't matter what you're eating because when you're, whatever it is you're eating, you're choosing to eat that and that your body deserves the same respect. 19:15 I like to tell people is that, this is going to sound so ridiculously simple, but at the same time, it's so great that it's simple because you could do it right now, the next time you sit down to eat and that is to take three deep breaths before you eat. And that just automatically puts your body into more of a relaxed state. 20:26 I like to recite a mantra. There's a whole bunch of science behind how a mantra works, but it's just something to kind of, to bring you back into your body, you know, to, to have your head stop with the spiraling thoughts, you know? And so a mantra can be as simple as, “I'm nourishing my body.” It doesn't matter what you say. You can pick, keep it short though so you can say it over and over. 24:36 So if people are like, I don't even know what to eat? You know, I would say that you want to try to eat food as close to mother nature as possible. So the least amount of processing, the more whole it is, the better off you are. And so even just thinking about having all the colors represented throughout the day is a wonderful place to start and it's visually exciting too, you know, to be able to nourish your body. The more colors do eat, the more nutrients you're putting into your body.26:00 And also I'm going to add here not to vilify food groups because we need them all. I've been there before and cut out different food groups and that just doesn't work as well. That's not the way that our bodies were built.28:34 The thing about the food story, you're born into a food story and you pass on a food story and not to put any pressure on parents or people who are around, you know, extended family members, but it really is true.29:25 I also learned what doesn't matter. And I know that probably sounds really negative, but when you can filter out what doesn't matter, all the little things I used to stress about, all the material things that I thought I had to have, you know, all of those things that kind of weigh you down and cloud your life. This has been an opportunity for more clarity on that. And so when I realized what doesn't matter, it created more space for what does matter. The food you eat has an undeniable impact on your life and relationships. How can you reform that influence and start over if you've had a restrictive approach to it all this while? In today's episode, we explore the story of Elise Museles, a certified eating psychology and nutrition expert, creator of the Food Story Method and platform, and host of the popular podcast Once Upon a Food Story. Elise's upcoming book, Food Story: Rewrite the Way You Eat, Think, and Live, talks about changing your relationship with food to step into a new and more satisfying life that is healthy not just for you but also for the people around you. She joins us to talk about her transformative journey, switching her profession from a well-established lawyer to a certified nutrition expert, how she learned to challenge the way she thought about food, and major snippets from Food Story, her latest book. What was that pivotal moment in Elise's life that prompted her to take action about her "perfectionist" relationship with food? It was the day Elise graduated from law school and was enjoying the milestone at a celebratory dinner in a restaurant with her boyfriend (now husband). They had booked the table three months in advance due to the high demand of the place and were over-the-moon about it. It all changed when Elise realized that most of the food served on the table were those she didn't have. She was uncomfortable around the food, and her boyfriend sensed it too. He responded to the situation and explained how difficult it was for him not to see her eat. Elise realized that her dysfunctional relationship with food was also affecting him, and she broke up with him that very moment. She decided to mend her ways with food, not just for him but also for herself. What did Elise's healing journey look like? After returning to California to work with the US Department of Justice, Elise started to connect with food more profoundly. She began to search for the ingredients and different nuances of food and cooking. Elise tried to discover where the ingredients were sourced, started going to the farmers' market to see the processes behind it, and presented food more beautifully. This way, she let go of a lot of fear surrounding food and learned to build a more positive connection with it. What resources did Elise use to help her in the process of rewriting her relationship with food? Elise shares that books had a significant impact on changing her relationship with food. She learned the different aspects of diet-eating, nutrition, and food varieties, making her better aware of her choices. Elise, however, recommends not to go through any limiting "diet" beliefs, outdated theories, and restrictive ideas around food. What are Elise's thoughts on food rules? Elise doesn't have any rules when it comes to food now. She believes there's a fine line between food rules and being aware of what your body needs. Your body understands for itself what food is necessary and what is not. You have to be more mindful so you don't mistake unnecessary cravings as your needs. Remember, the key is to get rid of any guilt or shame around your food choices. How does Elise describe the emotional aspects of food? The food you eat can take you back in memory to those times you enjoyed having it or first had it. You reminisce about the moments and experiences surrounding those times. That's why Elise explains; food is emotional. The best way to understand this is to think about how people's relationship with food changed during the pandemic. We resorted to comfort food because it made us feel better, and it's not wrong. However, if you regret your action, later on, you know your choice is unhealthy. Hence, if you know your food choice will make you happy after you have it, it's good for your body. And if it's not, you know you don't want it. It's all about being connected to yourself and understanding your body. This way, your relationship with food becomes happier. How do your thoughts affect your health, metabolism, and nutrient intake? You must've noticed how stress is a deciding factor when it comes to your food choices. Some of us tend to eat more when stressed, whereas others tend to be the other way round. No matter what you eat, you won't get the full value of the food unless your thoughts are in harmony with it. If your mind is occupied with concerns and worries about your food, your body lets out a stress response that stops you from imbibing the full value of your food. As Elise explains, "What's in your mind is just as important as what's on your plate." What is the Story of Perfection (from the eight disempowering food stories in her upcoming book)? Elise shares that many of us tend to have "unrealistic, impossible" standards around our food choices. We're caught in the rigidity of black and white, healthy and unhealthy, and often go after the wisest choice. All this is so that we achieve the notion of "perfect", which is hard to release. What is the Story of Shame (from the eight disempowering food stories in her upcoming book)? Elise's story of Shame tells us that we associate a lot of shame with our food choices and ways of eating. It is essential to have open conversations to help us get over the same. What is the Story of Confusion (from the eight disempowering food stories in her upcoming book)? Elise shares that many of her clients with perfectionist food attitudes tend to be confused around them because of the associated stress and overthinking. They feel overwhelmed and exhausted trying to abide by all the rules, opinions, and information. Elise explains that the key is to eat what works for you the best. What is the Story of Escape? According to Elise, the story of escape is more complicated than the other stories. And that's because, most often, we're unaware of what we're really trying to escape or why we're even feeling like behaving that way. You need to understand your "why" before making those escapes. What is the Story of Not Enoughness? It is a very common feeling, especially among people today. You see people post stories and content that seem too good to be true, and you keep pushing your bars till you reach just the right "enough". It's a human characteristic to feel something is not right in you in such cases. But this has to be overcome. What is the Story of Overwhelm? Tony Robbins says, "complexity is the enemy of execution". Our choices around food and diet could become so complicated over time that we begin to lose ourselves to the strategies and consecutive actions. We need to simplify these ideas to the simple thought that our body knows what's best for it. What is the Story of Later? Elise's story of later is especially applicable to parents who lose themselves in the process of caring for their kids. They postpone their happiness to a future that's far away and unknown. It's up to all of us to decide if we want to change the script of our lives and stop pressing the "in future" button on ourselves. Taking care of yourself needs to be on priority always. What is the Story of Despair? The story of despair, as Elise shares, is the most important to her. It talks about not losing hope even when the times are tough. There are times when you could feel you've practiced your food habits for so long that it's challenging to get over them. The real deal is getting over that trap, restoring hope, and rewriting your story. What is the Food Story Method discussed in Elise's book? Healing isn't linear, and it applies fittingly in the case of food choices too. You have to constantly go back, evaluate your disbeliefs around food, and get over them. You need to discard those messages that don't serve you any longer, release thoughts stuck in your body, and regain clarity on what works for your body at the moment and what doesn't. Adapt and improvise your food story as you progress over time. What is a simple way to incorporate Elise's tips into your life? Start by taking three deep breaths. It helps slow down your thoughts, reconnect you back to your body, and connect you to the present. Connect with Elise: Website | Instagram | Twitter | Podcast Find her latest book here!

Elise Museles is on the board of directors for the Environmental Working Group, a holistic health expert, and the host of the podcast Once Upon a Food Story. With Sounds True, she's released the new book Food Story: Rewrite the Way You Eat, Think, and Live. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Elise about the concept of "food stories"—your personal relationship with food and eating, defined not only by your own experiences but by the familial and cultural messages you grew up with. They discuss the different kinds of food stories, their origins, and what it takes to "rewrite" your own food story. Elise details different ways you can shift your attitudes toward food, including mindful eating, acceptance of your body's needs, and cutting screens out of your meals. Finally, Tami and Elise talk about the therapeutic quality of food prep, how to tailor recipes to specific moods, and why "emotional eating" isn't always a bad thing.

We all have beliefs, wounds, and traumas (big and small) from our childhoods and families of origin that can impact our thoughts and actions in ways we might not even realize. When we think of cancer prevention (or any chronic illness), we immediately focus on nutrition, exercise, and sleep. While all of these pieces of the wellness equation are essential, managing our mindset is also key when it comes to making sustainable lifestyle shifts. Meg Hirshberg, founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, knows firsthand that what happens in our minds is foundational for creating habits and mindsets that help our bodies, prevent and recover from disease. Her journey with breast cancer taught her how to take better care of her mind and body while learning that she didn't need to be 100% perfect along the way. She realized that the self-imposed pressure to eat, move, rest, and think “perfectly” was getting in the way of true healing and that having realistic expectations goes a long way in prevention, even with cancer. Meg believes that in order for lifestyle changes to stick, they have to be sustainable and doable. We need to allow for the celebrations (cake included!) and the times when life gets in the way and we veer off course. By letting yourself be human, you can create a long-term lifestyle, so that you can become your strongest, most resilient self. In this episode, you'll learn: The best approach to eating for an anticancer lifestyle Easy ways to recenter in stressful times Why deprivation never works (HINT: It backfires) A simple inspirational tool to motivate you to exercise Why mindset sets the foundation for an anticancer lifestyle How negative self-talk impacts your health and what works instead You'll feel inspired to become more proactive with your overall well-being from what you're eating to how you're thinking… and everything in between. Food noise is everywhere. From articles and advertisements for the latest “superfood,” documentaries, and conflicting reports about new diet research, to fad diets promising bikini bodies, food noise is the ever-present background noise that keeps you from really tuning into your body and hearing what it needs to feel nourished. Food noise has been programmed into your subconscious mind and can shift the conversation inside your head. And now it pops up in your daily life disguised as a list of “shoulds” or restrictions that may be accompanied by a side of guilt! Food noise affects your choices, your habits, your self-esteem, and even reinforces some of your limiting beliefs. The daily noise can become a loud chorus that confuses and even disempowers you. Here's the good news: while you can't avoid being exposed to food noise, you can choose how you respond to it and let it impact you. Have you ever noticed the ways food impacts how you feel, not just physically but mentally as well? The latest advances and research in neuroscience now confirm that certain foods such as fruits, greens, nuts, seeds, seafood, healthy fats (and dark chocolate!) can help us stay motivated and upbeat while others, such as processed foods and refined sugar, can drag us down and dampen our spirits. Dr. Drew Ramsey is a pioneer in the emerging field of Nutritional Psychiatry and one of the most influential voices on using food to support our mental well-being. As the founder of the Brain Food Clinic and author of Eat To Beat Depression and Anxiety, he believes that every time we sit down to eat, we have an opportunity to put our brain in “grow mode,” feed our microbiome and foster optimal brain health. With depression and anxiety disorders affecting more than fifty-eight million people in the United States alone, we need to think about our mental health just as much as we think about our physical health. Dr. Ramsey not only delivers the most cutting edge-science and actionable tips to nourish your brain for your mental fitness, but his empowering approach also makes it flexible, customizable, and even fun. You'll feel inspired to take care of your most important organ and put your brain on a pedestal where it belongs. (It's just what the doctor ordered!) In this episode, you'll learn: How to honor your emotions and your nervous system, especially during transitional times The different food categories and ingredients to achieve greater mental health Myths and facts about seafood and why DHA and Omega-3 fats are so important for brain health Why BDNF is essential and how to eat to support it What a Nutritional Psychiatrist eats in a day for optimal brain health How to feel in alignment with your food values while nourishing your brain For complete show notes, click here. Even though your food story has been unfolding your whole life, chances are you haven't paused to really think about the origins of your habits, challenges, and beliefs. Whether you're conscious of it or not, your past created a blueprint that influences your daily decisions—for better or worse! Sometimes we don't even realize that we have a stored memory, emotion, or experience that is impacting us in such a profound way. But the food memories you share with your siblings and family members, and the family culture that formed them play out in the choices we make about food today. What would happen if you checked in with your siblings or family members about your food stories? When you talk about your experiences together and reflect on what happened, even a long time ago, you can see the past with a fresh set of eyes and understand why you believe certain things or behave in a particular way. Elise's brother, Robert Sturman, joins her for a very special and candid conversation about their shared history, their family dinner table, and how their sometimes differing memories and experiences shaped their food stories. Now an internationally celebrated photographer who has served as the Official Artist of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, Robert delves into some pivotal moments about his food story that affected his life and creativity as an artist. You'll be inspired to discuss your food story with your own family members...so you can revisit the past and rewrite the parts that no longer serve you. In this episode, you'll learn: How to engage with your siblings or family members about your family food story A simple framework for helping everyone feel seen and heard in tough conversations Ways parents' food stories can impact their children Some foods that can negatively impact mood How birth order and gender dynamics can affect your relationship to food What it means to say “yes” to yourself Podcast Partner: Nuzest. Sometimes the biggest enemy of your sense of confidence is the voice in your head. When your brain is telling you that you’re not good enough, that others know something you don’t, or that everyone has an easier time than you do, it’s really hard to feel confident. Perfectionism, procrastination, hiding, overindulging--they’re all habits of self-sabotage that can rob you of feeling comfortable in your own skin or prevent you from taking action on your goals. That was the situation that Anna Goldstein found herself in at 25 years old. She was living in New York City with big hopes and dreams for her future, but she was stumbling. She’d already had four different jobs, lived in three different apartments, and felt completely lost, alone, and isolated. She was consumed by the voice in her head that told her she was a failure and that her future didn’t look bright. She obsessively tracked what she was eating and fixated on the number on the scale. She believed her critical thoughts and went on for many years with low self-esteem and plummeting confidence But deep down, she knew there was more. She realized she didn’t have to believe everything in her mind. And that’s when she woke up and realized that in order to change her life, she had to change the “negative” story she was telling herself. Today, Anna is an NYU-Certified Life & Business Coach and the host of the Profit With Purpose podcast. She has a gift for zooming straight to the heart of any issue and she’s developed a reputation for helping her clients figure out what they truly want—and go after it. Through Anna’s method and experiences, you’ll learn that confidence isn’t about having the perfect body, the perfect house, or the perfect life. Confidence comes when you change your relationship with yourself and that will ripple out into your relationships at home, at work, and—yes—even with food. You’ll feel inspired to not be afraid to fail, to trust your gut, and take the practical steps to build your self-esteem and confidence. In this episode, Anna shares: A new way to view fear and failure How your relationship with food can shift once you quiet your mind Why confidence isn’t about body size or type A powerful exercise to identify and release negative thoughts And SO MUCH more Learn more about Anna Goldstein: Be Bold: A Guide To Unbreakable Confidence Anna’s Website Instagram: @selfinthecity Twitter: @selfinthecity Facebook: @selfinthecity Find the Profit With Purpose podcast on your favorite app! Food can be joyful and fun. But so many of us have come to associate eating with stress and anxiety. We are all susceptible to losing our enjoyment of food. Sometimes, we even become afraid of it—and it becomes more about eating for mere survival than about the enjoyment and connection that it can bring. But how can we get that joy back? How can we learn again to tap into food’s power to transport us back to times of joy and connection with friends and family? Caitlin Greene, was at a low point in her life when she lost interest in just about everything, including nourishing herself with real food. Her eating disorder consumed her and her lifelong passion for cooking was slipping away. She struggled to stay afloat as her world came crashing down. She not only lost her passion for food—she lost her passion for life. But in 2016, everything changed for Caitlin. She was able to reconnect to her past memories of being in the kitchen with her family and started to share her passion for cooking online. She felt accountable to herself again and created a community that was instantly inspired by her contagious energy. Through Caitlin's experience, you'll learn that no matter what your story is right now, no matter how far off you've deviated from showing up as your best self in big or small ways, there is hope. You can find joy again, both on your plate and in your life. Tune into this episode to hear: How Caitlin started to heal her disordered relationship with food How her dedication to real food, ingredients, and passion for creating recipes led to a career as a food blogger and influencer with hundreds of thousands of followers The role that writing her new book played in her healing journey And some easy strategies to make cooking joyful, simple, and fun Learn more about Caitlin Greene: Caitlin’s New Book! Once upon a time, eating was fun. You looked forward to the big food holidays and didn’t think twice about grabbing a cookie or going back for seconds. Food was simple, easy, and natural–just like breathing. And then… something changed. Food got weird. Instead of being something you looked forward to, it was work. You counted calories, agonized over menus, and tried to keep up with the ever-changing advice and list of food rules. Every time you turned on the TV or hopped on the internet, you’d see another celebrity or marketer touting the latest, greatest superfood. You tried to squeeze yourself into the “right” size or shape. Or, you worried that the next thing you ate would trigger your health condition. Or, you became preoccupied with eating “good food” and beat yourself whenever you had something “bad.” Or, you felt like wellness was inaccessible especially when your bank account was near empty. There are all sorts of reasons that food goes from fun & easy to frustrating and riddled with guilt. And? It doesn’t have to be that way. I speak from experience. My food fixation almost cost me my marriage. I followed rigid rules about food. I deprived myself of anything that wasn’t on my ridiculously strict plan. I tried to control every last thing that went into my mouth. My now-husband got tired of watching me obsess over every carb and stalk of steamed broccoli (no salt, no butter) and we broke up for a time. Well, dear reader, I woke up—and started to take a deep look inside. Eventually, we got married, and I left a career in law to follow my passion for health & wellness. I studied eating psychology and holistic nutrition. I learned everything I could about food so I could start to make it my friend again… But through it all, I was still holding myself to impossible standards. On the outside, I looked like I had this whole wellness thing down, but inside I was miserable, even though I was quote-unquote healthy as I could be. My food story had first turned food into the enemy of a “perfect” body. And then it turned food into a drug I was hooked on for the chronic condition of “healthy living.” I needed a new food story. And I realized I had the power to write it myself. I remembered that food was part of some of my happiest memories–like dinner time with my family when I was a kid and my mom’s effortless holiday entertaining. And I also remembered all of the happy memories I had of taking care of my body–walks through the woods, swimming in the ocean. I even remember how joyful my dad was every day when he went to the gym! I started noticing how I talked to myself when I sat down to eat. I replaced the negativity and criticism with pleasure, nourishment, and love. And food started to become easy and even fun again. I’m Elise Museles, and this is Once Upon A Food Story—the podcast that helps you create a new story about food, health, your body, and your life. On this show, we know that finding peace with food isn’t just about eating more kale, drinking more water, or doing more yoga. It’s about unlocking the power of your food story and rewriting the parts that no longer nourish you. Because life is too short to waste time with food drama. Every other week, I release a new conversation with someone who has the courage to share their food story—one that just might sound familiar or encourages YOU to think of your own. Each guest will highlight their experiences and expertise in a way that empowers you to discover another part of your food story, so you can finally allow food to help you live your best life, not interfere and control it. It’s time to stop stressing about food and step into a new chapter. Once Upon A Food Story can help. Hit follow in your podcast player so you never miss an episode. And pass Once Upon A Food Story onto someone you love who is also ready to change the way they eat, think, and live! This is my first solo episode where I’m recording by myself without a guest! I’m diving into a topic that has completely transformed my personal approach to eating: using food to boost your mood. And because I’ve experienced firsthand how it can make planning meals feel more purposeful (and fun!), I’m bringing you along, so that you can give it a try, too… While food can’t solve all our world problems, it can impact how you feel which of course affects EVERYTHING else. Since we all could use simple ways to lift our spirits and give us uplifting energy as we navigate our days, I’m breaking it down into actionable steps to start adding mood-boosting foods to your plate right away. You’ll learn why the food-mood connection is real (and the science-backed studies to prove it), which nutrients and ingredients can positively impact your outlook, tips to inspire peace and calm, how to take charge and make proactive choices that steer your mood and your entire day! Make sure to stick around until the end to get a behind-the-scenes peek on the writing process for my upcoming book, and learn why I’ll be taking a temporary hiatus from recording new episodes. In the meantime, there are dozens of inspiring conversations for you to explore that you might have missed or may want to revisit again. I’ll be back soon with renewed enthusiasm and a lineup of awesome guests! Chances are you’ve probs thought about your relationship with food once twice or thirty nine hundredithe times. Maybe it’s a good relationship, a bad one or just one in need of a little TLC. If someone asked you “so uh, what’s your food story?” would you even know where to start? What genre would it be? Is it an empowering memoir? An anxiety-inducing thriller? Downright horror? Is it all just fiction? My guest today is all about food stories. Elise Museles believes that Your food story impacts everything from how you eat, when you eat, how you feel about your body, the choices you make around food, anxieties you may have around cooking or eating… the list goes on and on and on and ON! Basically, our food stories are the CONTEXT that explains why we eat the way we do. As Elise, a certified eating psychology and nutrition expert explains: our food stories, unlike the Harry Potter stories, are ALWAYS a work in progress.
