In this episode of I Hear Design, we'll dive into a topic that's sparked a lot of debate over the years: the use of PVC in the built environment. In spite of its ubiquitous usage by designers and specifiers for a variety of applications, questions about its its sustainability claims continue to swirl, and many A&D firms as well as manufacturers have eliminated PVC from their specifications and raw materials. Listen in as Jonce Walker, principal and managing director of BEYOND at HLW, and Gordon Boggis, CEO of Carnegie, discuss the trend toward healthier materials in the industry and what designers need to know about the impact vinyl has on people and the planet. Today our special guest and guest presenter on the topic of "How to WOW Your Patients Through Interior Design" is Mitra Silva, CEO and Founder of Simour Design (www.simourdesign.com). "As a leader in your field, healing is not only your passion, but your purpose," says Silva. "Not only should your medical office and space be beautiful, but it should be healing for you, your patients, and your staff. Our design goes beyond beauty to provide comfort, functionality, and flow while representing your brand story. This is how we create spaces that are truly healing space." REQUEST THE BONUS, email "welcome@simourdesign.com" Prior to founding Simour Interior Design, I spent years working at HLW, an award-winning design company. As a member of their design team, I was involved in design development for Walt Disney®, ESPN®, HBO®, Intuit®, and Equinox®. Since then, I have worked independently on upscale hospitality, commercial and residential projects. But, at my core, I felt like something was not right. The projects were just no longer fulfilling to me. I wanted passion. I wanted to make a difference in the world. That's when my own experience as a patient led me to focus on design for the healthcare industry. Time after time, I found myself in medical and dental offices that were dreary or poorly lit or in disrepair. Instead of a comforting space, I was often in rooms that made me anxious or uncomfortable. This was how my vision began, as a patient. I believe that the proper design can create a flow that positively influences productivity and heals each person who interacts in that space. Simour Design is an interior design firm specializing in healthcare interior design. Our designs incorporate beauty and provide comfort, functionality, and flow while representing your brand story. This is how we design medical offices that are truly a healing space. A space that serves as a physical reminder of your life's purpose, and helps you to create the most profitable, productive, and passionate business possible. Register for our webinar with Bolanle Williams-Olley now: https://bit.ly/3MoyHM3 Host Kendall Fisher and guest co-host Megan O'Brien, NetSuite business and finance editor, join Mancini Duffy CFO and author of “Build Boldly,” Bola Williams-Olley. She starts by explaining her inspiration behind the book (5:25) before diving into her early life, her decision to study math and how that played a role in landing her first job as a junior project accountant for HLW architecture firm in 2007 (8:45). Bola discusses the challenges and lessons learned as a young accountant during the 2008 recession, all of which helped her take on her next role as senior project accountant for Skidmore Owings & Merrill (13:25). In this role, she learned how a cohesive team drives success and efficiency for services-based businesses, focusing on seamless communication with the project team and client (17:30). She then takes us on the journey to Mancini Duffy, which put her in uncharted territory once again as a controller (22:13). She discusses the challenges that are specific to a controller and the KPIs she was tracking (25:57), as well as the importance of employee engagement and developing the team to help her succeed (35:39). All of that made her transition to CFO in 2018 fairly seamless (42:21), although she notes becoming far more focused on long-term planning (44:11). Bola also explains how her priorities changed due to the pandemic, from working with various suppliers to hold on payments, to finding resources needed to finish jobs amid “The Great Recession” (48:01). Finally, she hits on the impact of technology as CFO (53:52) and dishes her advice for being a “bold” finance leader (55:48).Like what you learned? This week, I'm speaking with Bolanle Williams-Olley, Chief Financial Officer and part-owner of Mancini Duffy, a technology-first design firm based in NYC, overseeing the firm's financial and operational performance. Bolanle has had 12 years working in the AEC industry, having worked with HLW and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) prior to joining Mancini Duffy. She holds a Masters in Education & Social Policy from NYU, Masters in Applied Mathematics, a Bachelors in Mathematics from the City University of New York, Hunter College, and is also a board member of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF). In addition to her role at Mancini Duffy, she has founded several impact organizations in Nigeria that aim to improve education in low-income communities, empower women in the A/E/C industry and at small design firms, as well as create awareness about NGOs across Nigeria. Bolanle is launching her first book in November called "Build Boldly: Chart Your Unique Career Path", as a playbook for success in the architecture and design industry, offering business development tips including lessons she's learned from being Mancini's CFO. In this episode, we discuss the role of a CFO within an architecture practice and the importance of establishing a strong partnership between the accounts team and the project management team. We cover some key performance indicators or metrics they measure to ensure the success of their projects and how these metrics then filter into business development. We also talk about Bolanle's philanthropic work and a bit of a peek into her book Build Boldly.
In this episode, I decided to explore one of the fast-growing areas of visual storytelling - offline Branded Environments Design. I am talking about those visual narratives you most likely have seen when you visited a major corporate office. Local artists create them through digital or physical expressions such as paintings and sculptures commissioned by brands to support their unique culture in both customer-facing or corporate offices. About our guests That’s why I am excited to have on our show Abbey Melsheimer and Gustavo Tonelli owners of Chilipop.co a branded environments design company. Abbey is hailing from a small town in Ohio, Abbey studied architectural design in Germany and graphic design in New York - developing an understanding and respect for cultural nuance that took her to large-scale projects in New York, London, Shanghai, and Miami. Her sensibilities for both design and purpose led Abbey to work on a wide array of spaces – from banking behemoths (Chase) to world-leading technology giants (Google) to trendy consumer products (Evian) – on working buildings and installations alike. She worked for industry leading firms such as HLW, MMoser, and MKG before opening her own creative studio in Miami. And Gustavo is a musician, writer, radio host, photographer, television producer – since an early age Gustavo has been drawn to anything that involved creating something where nothing existed before. With a keen sense of the business aspects of the arts, he promptly found himself across the aisle working for companies such as Time Warner, HBO, and the Cisneros Television Group. Initially involved in the marketing aspects of music releases, he left his native Argentina to move to the US where he works between New York and Miami focusing on both photography and developing new concepts for television and visual arts. What you will learn: What is Branded Environment Design in the context of Visual Storytelling? What are the typical business objectives as a marketer you should consider? How does the end-to-end process of Branded Environment Design look like? What are the project examples of successful Branded Environment Design? What are the top tips and best practices to consider? And much more Read our episode's blog post on VSI Blog. This podcast is brought to you by the Visual Storytelling Institute (VSI) from Miami, FL.

Humboldt Last Week is intended to be an enjoyable new way to catch up on some local news. Available where you get podcasts and downloadable for later listening. When you click play it may take a few seconds to start. Episode partners: Humboldt Clothing Co. / Cafe Nooner / Bongo Boy Studio Humboldt Last Week, Episode 83 (7:02): Last week the New York Times put out an article noting Humboldt County as the place hit worst by the opioid epidemic in all of California -- a place with an opioid death rate higher than five times the state average. The article goes into the disturbing amount of heroin and meth use in Eureka, homelessness issues, the lack of affordable housing in the area, law enforcement challenges, and criticism about the amount of state funding doled out to combat these issues. “We really are trying and it’s a challenge,” said Assemblymember Jim Wood, a dentist who sits on many health committees. “Because it’s not just about opioids, it’s about behavioral health, it’s about homelessness… we’re just not spending the money where we need to (on things like treatment and relapse prevention)...” In an interview with HLW, Wood discusses what he and the state have been doing to combat Humboldt’s opioid issues, a startling local heroin statistic, his healthcare proposals including one that would cover young undocumented immigrants, and his respectful disagreement with Governor Jerry Brown about healthcare funding priorities.
