Sadie is joined by John Luke and two of their cousins, Reed and Cole Robertson, as they remember and celebrate their Papaw, Phil Robertson, who passed on May 25, 2025. Papaw Phil loved God, he loved his wife, Mamaw Kay, he loved his family, and he loved hunting — and that's exactly how he lived, by example, for everyone he encountered throughout his life. Reed remembers a particular lesson that was learned the hard way, and John Luke recalls his two hunting outings with Papaw Phil. Sadie remembers childhood days spent at the original Duck Commander and how the kids all took part. Phil Robertson was truly a legend. He lived by example and was a man of simple faith — and we can ALL learn a lot from his life and legacy! https://helixsleep.com/sadie — Get 20% off sitewide today! https://drinkag1.com/whoa — Get a FREE bottle of AG D3K2, an AG1 Welcome Kit, AND 5 of the upgraded AG1 travel packs with your first order. https://drinklmnt.com/whoa — Get a free LMNT Sample Pack with any purchase! From his humble beginnings on a midwest farm in central Ohio, Jeff has taken the life lessons from his storytelling “Papaw” (Grandfather) combined with his corporate career in Biotech and Neuroscience to create programs that allow you to discover how you're truly wired for greatness and how to communicate in an authentic way to drive positive change in the world around you. After being the first person in his blue-collar family to graduate college straight out of high school, Jeff spent his corporate career in Biotech where he led several product launches for genetic cancer therapies. One of those therapies was for brain cancer. It was here that he discovered the power of neuroscience and the fact that outside of academia, most of corporate America didn't really understand how the brain actually worked, otherwise, we wouldn't communicate with customers and employees the way it was currently being done. From there Jeff set out with a new mission, to teach others what he has learned about the biology, psychology, and physiology of the brain, and how to apply those learnings in a simple and understandable way to be more impactful communicators. Chapter 1:Summary of Hillbilly Elegy"Hillbilly Elegy" is a memoir by J.D. Vance that tells the story of his life growing up in a poor, working-class family in Appalachia. Vance's story highlights the struggles and challenges faced by many people in this region, including poverty, substance abuse, and family dysfunction.Vance chronicles his difficult childhood, marked by his parents' troubled marriage, his mother's addiction issues, and the instability of his home life. Despite these challenges, Vance ultimately finds success through hard work and determination. He joins the military, attends college, and eventually graduates from Yale Law School.Throughout the book, Vance reflects on the cultural and societal factors that have contributed to the problems facing his community, including a lack of economic opportunity, a sense of hopelessness, and a cycle of dysfunction that is passed down through generations. Despite these obstacles, Vance ultimately finds a way to break free from the cycle of poverty and create a better life for himself.Overall, "Hillbilly Elegy" is a powerful and poignant memoir that sheds light on the experiences of working-class Americans and offers insight into the complex issues facing this community. It is a compelling and thought-provoking read that explores themes of family, identity, and social mobility.Chapter 2:The Theme of Hillbilly Elegy"Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis" by J.D. Vance is a personal account that highlights the struggles of growing up in a poor Appalachian family, focusing heavily on social analysis and critiquing the white working-class population in America. Below are the key plot points, character developments, and thematic ideas outlined in the book:**Key Plot Points:**1. **Background and Family History**: J.D. Vance narrates his family origins, starting with his grandparents, Mamaw and Papaw, who moved from Kentucky to Ohio in hopes of escaping poverty and securing a better future. Despite their attempts, the family continues to struggle with various issues across generations.2. **Childhood Experiences**: Vance describes a turbulent childhood marked by his mother's addiction problems and a series of her romantic partners. He highlights the significant role his grandmother, Mamaw, plays in providing him stability and guidance.3. **Education and Escape**: Amidst family chaos, Vance finds solace and guidance in education. His decision to join the Marines after high school becomes a turning point, providing him discipline and a sense of direction.4. **Higher Education and Reflections**: After the Marines, Vance attends Ohio State University and later Yale Law School, where he confronts his cultural identity and feels a divide between his Appalachian upbringing and the elite environment.5. **Career and Adult Life**: Vance discusses his life post-education, including reflections on his Appalachian heritage, the disintegration of his community in Ohio, and his views on the broader socio-economic issues facing the white working-class.**Character Development:**- **J.D. Vance**: The main evolution seen in Vance is his transformation from a troubled youth to a successful law graduate. This change is largely credited to the role models in his life, especially his grandmother, and his own decisions like joining the Marines.- **Mamaw (Bonnie Vance)**: She is a fierce and strong-willed woman who significantly influences Vance's life. Despite her rough exterior and tough love approach, her wisdom and care provide J.D. the stability needed to navigate his challenging circumstances.- **Bev (Vance's mother)**: Her character serves as a cautionary tale about the destructive impact of addiction and instability on families. Although she loves her children, her battles with addiction and her series of relationships...

This Episode 131 is dedicated to the loving memory of Robert Lee Rutherford, 5-6-1939 to 5-22-2024. We affectionately knew him as Papaw. I got to meet Papaw in around 1997-1998 and he was still working at the Lee County Mosquito Control. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam war and served 20 years in the USAF. He did me the most glorious favor of all by telling me "yes" to my very important question of "may I marry your daughter". It has been a fantastic ride since. He was just such a nice man, a real Good Guy. Loving father of three and fantastic grandfather to my two boys. I got to spend the last 17 months with Papaw and over this increasingly sad time I got to witness actual True Love in the loving, thoughtful, all encompassing care of his now widow, Pong Sun (Mamaw). I thought I had a clue what true love meant. I did not. Now I do. We will miss Robert, Bob, Papaw dearly and we wish him everlasting peace until we meet him again.
Show Notes Episode 450:”Gloom, Despair and Agony on Me” This week Host Dave Bledsoe staggers into what he thought was a cornfield drunk out of his gourd on moonshine. Only to be kicked out of the WalMart Garden Department for telling off color jokes to the other shoppers. (again) On the show this week, we celebrate nine years of podcasting by paying tribute to the wellspring of all our humor: Hee Haw! Along the way we discover why Dave is the uncultured oaf he is. (Don't blame his Aunt Bonnie, she TRIED!) Then we dive right into the story of Hee Haw, after we explain why Nashville is the heart of Country Music. (Hint: A lot of out of work musicians.) We follow two Canadians who came south to make television and the reasons why they made the greatest comedy variety show of all time in a fake cornfield. (The sets were left over from Green Acres.) We meet the hosts and cast of Hee Haw and then explain why Hee Haw is more than just bad jokes and hillbilly stereotypes. (We mean, there is a LOT of that too!) Finally we explain why Dave chose Hee Haw to celebrate nine years of this show. (He misses his Papaw.) The guest for this episode is Dr. Nick Monk, who joins me for a consideration of perhaps McCarthy's most idiosyncratic work. The 90s were an exciting time for McCarthy fans. In 92 he published the award winning All the Pretty Horses, followed two years later by the next installment in the Border Trilogy, The Crossing. Before he would go on to close out the trilogy in 98, however, in 1995 he also published a strange and fascinating play, The Stonemason. The play is about the Telfairs, a family of Black stone masons in Louisville, Kentucky. The play examines the mystical and perhaps metafictional notion of stone masonry. Using experimental techniques, we follow Ben Telfair in his worshipful relationship to his 100 year old stonemason grandfather, Papaw. The play was canceled both figuratively and literally before it was ever fully produced. Was it shut down because of McCarthy's appropriation of Black life? Or because the novelist included elements in the play which are more or less impossible to stage? Both? Dr. Nick Monk is the author of True and Living Prophet of Destruction: Cormac McCarthy and Modernity, published in 2016 by the University of New Mexico Press, and he edited the collection Intertextual and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Cormac McCarthy: Borders and Crossings from 2012. Nick has also published on McCarthy and the ‘Desert Gothic,' Native American literature – particularly Leslie Silko – intercultural communication, identity, and teaching and learning in higher education. Nick is currently Director of the Center for Transformative Teaching, and Honorary Professor in the Department of English, at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. As always, readers should beware: there be spoilers here. Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY. Papawas born in 1899 and was 63 when I was born and mama was 40. Mama had astroke while delivering me and was never the same afterwards.I was born with Spina Bifida, but few knew what that was in the early and mid60's, I was mis-diagnosed as having Polio at one point and the word spreadthrough our little town like wildfire! I remember that people feared us becausePolio was contagious (but only through contact with that person's fecal matter) Iremember that we would be in town on Saturday and people would see uscoming and walk on the side of the street because they thought I was contagious! They would call us “White trash and curse us too. When I was 10, I went to Shriner's hospital for crippled Children in ShreveportLa. Michael Chambers-- there are many words to describe him: firefighter, hero, deacon, Papaw, dad, and… victim. He was so present in the lives of all who knew him and then he just disappeared. Was the scene in his garage a clue as to what happened or was it a red herring? Please consider supporting the pod by joining us over on our Patreon page! Save The Children is a wonderful program that helps kids to learn to read and retain what they read better. This interview is somewhat different from our regular format, as Papaw Paul sits down and has a conversation with his boss,Tina, from Save The Children about the work they do. Some kids struggle a little more than others and it is quite alright to get a little extra help. They tell stories of helping kids and the progress that is made. A couple things they have studied are The Titanic, and Code talkers. As you will hear in this episode they both love the kids and want to help them all grow to be better people. I'm gonna say they are "2 Awesome Appalachians, giving a leg up on reading, to little Appalachians!" Save The Children was founded on April 15th, 1919 (104 years ago) by Eglantyne Jebb and Dorothy Buxton in London England. The organization helps to raise money to improve children's lives by creating better educational opportunities, better health care, and improved economic opportunities. Show Notes Episode 384: The Devil and Caleb Black Part 5 of Spooktacular 20222 This week Host Dave Bledsoe actually did some damn work and wrote original audio fiction for the finale of the Spooktacular. (It was because he was afraid the Satanists were gonna cast a hex on his Jameson bottle!) On the show this week tell you the story of a bad man and his deal with the Devil. (Not Dave, and the devil isn't real) Along the way we meet Dave's Papaw, who is the guy on the right in the show pic. He tells him a tale of an Appalachian bootlegger and his encounter with an old man in the mountains who makes him an offer he can't refuse. The Devil and Caleb Black is an original audio drama written, performed and sound designed by Dave Bledsoe. (Is it a thinly veiled rip off of Old Gods of Appalachian? Yes, it really is!) It concludes Spooktacular 2022, with one last story about the Devil. Hopefully the Church of Satan will not get their black silk crotchless panties in a twist over this one since we admit right here at the start, that we made the whole thing up. (So lighted up! We thought you guys had a sense of humor and shit!) Interviews With The Hunting Masters - Big game Hunting podcast
Chef Jean Paul Bourgeois - Sportsman, Game chef and Meat eater contributor As a man, a chef and an outdoorsman, I strive to honor and celebrate the traditions of southern cooking and cultures that came before us through sustainable food ways and new world techniques. s a young boy, I recall my earliest, fondest, and most lasting memories centered on food. Whether it was my dad competing in a community cooking contest, my mom preparing family meals every evening, or PaPaw eating biscuits and mayhaw jelly with me when we visited during the holidays; I cherish those as well as and so many other memories of my childhood. Growing up, my mom and dad encouraged me to make a “happy plate,” meaning I finished all of my food. Needless to say, I always did, and it still “irks” me to waste food. Well, all of those happy plates did their job, and today I find myself blessed to live in New York City and married to the love of my life, Candace Koehl Bourgeois. My time in New York City, has afforded me a network of new friends and family that I look to for inspiration, support, and good times.
