A tornado once knocked out every stoplight at a busy intersection, and in seconds it was total chaos — not because any driver was better than another, but because nobody had a system for who goes first. In the final week of Sex, Love, Work and War, we open Ephesians 5 to talk about marriage — submission, sacrificial love, and the "if" that quietly wrecks more relationships than anything else.Along the way: why biblical submission isn't degrading (hint: Jesus did it too), what it means for a husband to be the "head" of his home, and why the two little letters I-F might be the most dangerous word in any marriage.Whether you're happily married, barely hanging on, single and content, or still looking for the one, this message is for anyone who's ever wondered if there's a better way to love someone for the long haul. There is — and it starts with grace, not conditions.
In this Bible Study Podcast, we unpack what Scripture actually teaches about biblical marriage, why God designed one man + one woman for life, and how both no-fault divorce culture and the redefinition of marriage equally erode the foundation of strong families, children, and nations. God's design isn't outdated—it's the only model that builds lasting civil society. Watch the full episode for deeper study. What do YOU think the Bible says about this? Comment below. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9 Biblical courage is not bravado or self-confidence. It is faithfulness rooted in the presence and promises of God. That kind of courage matters in every area of life—including the way we handle money. Following Christ may require us to give when we would rather hold tightly, resist cultural pressures, act with integrity when compromise would be easier, or obey God when doing so comes at a personal cost. Dr. Craig Bartholomew, Director of the Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology in Cambridge, England, joined the show today to close out our Financial Virtues series to explore the virtue of fortitude and what it means for faithful stewardship. More Than a Moment of Bravery When we hear the word courage, we may picture dramatic acts of bravery. Scripture certainly includes those moments. Joshua needed courage as he prepared to lead Israel into the Promised Land. But fortitude is broader than courage in a single crisis. It is resilience. Resolve. Endurance. The Christian life is less like a sprint and more like a marathon. Fortitude is the strength to continue following Christ over a lifetime—to remain faithful not only in dramatic moments, but also through the ordinary decisions, pressures, disappointments, and temptations we encounter every day. That distinction matters because some of the most important acts of courage in our financial lives may never look heroic to anyone else. It may mean living below your means when everyone around you is upgrading their lifestyle. It may mean refusing a dishonest opportunity even when the money is attractive. It may mean continuing to give generously when fear tells you to hold tighter. Fortitude is the courage to keep choosing faithfulness. When Money Becomes Our Security Money has a way of exposing what we fear. We fear not having enough. We fear an uncertain future. We fear losing the lifestyle we have built. We may fear falling behind others or disappointing the people around us. But the deeper question is this: Where have we placed our security? If our identity, security, or sense of worth rests primarily in wealth, then anything that threatens our finances can begin to threaten our sense of self. That is a burden money was never meant to carry. Scripture continually redirects our trust away from created things and toward the Creator. Money is a good gift and a useful tool, but it makes a terrible foundation for our identity. Christian fortitude begins by remembering who we are and whose we are. Our ultimate security is not found in the size of an investment account, the value of a home, or the stability of an income. It is found in God, who promises to remain faithful to His people. That does not mean financial losses or uncertainty become easy. It means fear no longer has the final word. Jesus Shows Us What Courage Looks Like Jesus gives us the clearest picture of true fortitude. At the beginning of His public ministry, Satan tempted Him in the wilderness, offering shortcuts to power and glory that would bypass the path of suffering and obedience. Jesus refused. He remained faithful to the Father and continued toward the cross. His courage was not merely displayed in one final moment. It characterized His entire life—a steady obedience to the Father regardless of the cost. That same pattern should shape His followers. Money can easily become one of the competing loyalties of our hearts. Jesus repeatedly warned about the spiritual danger of wealth when it moves from being a tool we steward to a treasure we worship. Money must remain in its proper place. Fortitude helps us keep it there. Generosity Requires Courage One way we loosen money's grip on our hearts is through generosity. Giving shifts our attention away from ourselves and toward God and our neighbors. Rather than asking only, “What can this money do for me?” generosity teaches us to ask, “How might God use what He has entrusted to me to serve someone else?” Sometimes that requires real courage. Giving can confront our desire for control. It can challenge our instinct to accumulate more before deciding we finally have “enough.” It may require us to trust God with what happens after we release what we have been holding. But generosity reminds us that life is not ultimately about us. As we put God first, He turns our attention outward—to the neighbor down the street, the family facing hardship, the ministry serving people in need, or even someone across the world whose circumstances are far different from our own. Fortitude gives us the courage to hold God's provision with open hands. The Courage to Choose Integrity Fortitude also matters when faithfulness costs us financially. There may be moments when telling the truth threatens a business opportunity, refusing to compromise means walking away from profit, or acting justly puts us at a disadvantage. Those moments require more than good intentions. They require discernment to recognize what is right—and courage to do it. Our culture constantly communicates messages about success, wealth, status, and power. Christians must learn to examine those messages carefully rather than simply accepting the assumptions around us. Not everything profitable is good. Not everything financially advantageous is wise. And not everything considered normal in our culture is consistent with following Jesus. Fortitude enables us to remain faithful when obedience becomes costly. Courage Is Cultivated in Community Christian courage should never become another form of self-reliance. We can be extremely determined about the wrong things. That is why fortitude must be shaped by wisdom, discernment, prayer, Scripture, and Christian community. We need other believers who can help us recognize blind spots, challenge our assumptions, and remind us of what is true when fear begins to distort our perspective. This is especially important with money. Financial decisions can be complex, and our hearts can easily rationalize what we already want. Wise counsel helps us discern where genuine stewardship ends and where fear, greed, pride, or self-interest may be taking over. The goal is not simply to become more resilient. It is to become resilient in following Jesus. A Long Obedience in the Same Direction Most of us will face moments when courage is urgently required. But much of Christian fortitude is formed in thousands of smaller choices. Choosing generosity again. Choosing integrity again. Choosing contentment again. Choosing to trust God again. Faithful stewardship is not built through one extraordinary financial decision. It is shaped over a lifetime of ordinary obedience. That is fortitude: not the absence of fear, but the courage to remain faithful because we know the One who is with us wherever we go. What does it really mean to love your spouse the way Jesus loves His Church? In Ephesians 5:25-33, we're reminded that God's design for marriage isn't built on convenience, feelings, or keeping score, it's built on sacrificial love. Jesus didn't simply tell us how to love; He demonstrated it by giving Himself completely for us.This message challenges husbands to love sacrificially and personally, pursuing what's best for their wives with intentionality and grace. But the truth reaches beyond marriage. Every healthy relationship begins with a heart surrendered to Jesus.Whether you're married, engaged, or preparing for the future, this message will encourage you to stop looking for quick fixes and start allowing Christ to transform you from the inside out.In this message:• Love gives more than it takes.• Love pursues what's best for others.• Sacrificial love is intentional.• Healthy marriages are built by healthy disciples.• Sit with God before you sit with your spouse.• Don't settle, keep growing.Your marriage won't become everything God designed it to be by accident. As we become more like Jesus, our relationships begin to reflect His love.At 2Rivers Church, our mission is to help people become passionate followers of Jesus Christ. "Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours." - 1 Chronicles 29:11If God owns it all, what does that mean for the way we manage money? Brian Holtz is here to unpack the Five Pillars of Financial Discipleship—principles that, when embraced by families, bring freedom and joy to their finances.Brian Holtz is the CEO of Compass Financial Ministry and the author of Financial Discipleship for Families: Intentionally Raising Faithful Children.More Than Money ManagementWhen it comes to managing money as followers of Christ, the Bible calls us to more than financial freedom or peace of mind. It calls us to financial discipleship—a life of stewardship, surrender, and multiplication for God's Kingdom. Here are five key pillars that shape this journey.Pillar One: OwnershipEverything begins with recognizing who truly owns it all. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 24:1, Haggai 2:8, and 1 Chronicles 29:11 that God is the Creator and ultimate Owner of everything. Our role is not ownership but stewardship. This mindset shift—from “mine” to “His”—brings both relief and challenge. It's freeing to know the responsibility doesn't all rest on us, but humbling to realize our lives and resources are not ultimately ours to control.Pillar Two: SurrenderAcknowledging God's ownership requires surrender. Luke 14:33 makes this clear: discipleship means yielding everything back to God, not just intellectually but in our hearts. This surrender extends beyond giving—it includes how we spend, save, and plan. Trusting God's plan over our own is an act of daily obedience.Pillar Three: ChoiceIn Matthew 6:24, Jesus tells us we cannot serve both God and money. Every financial decision—whether saving, giving, or spending—reveals who we serve. Choosing God requires aligning daily habits with His Word, even when it feels counterintuitive. As Isaiah reminds us, God's ways are higher and better than ours.Pillar Four: MultiplicationDiscipleship is never meant to stop with us. In the Parable of the Talents, Jesus calls us to multiply what He has entrusted to us. This means sharing what we've learned and inviting others into the journey. Financial discipleship involves helping others apply biblical wisdom so that God's Kingdom continues to grow.Pillar Five: Eternal FocusFinally, discipleship means setting our eyes on eternity. Jesus said in Matthew 6:19–21 to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth. But these treasures aren't material—they're about our relationship with Christ. Living with an eternal focus keeps us from being distracted by temporary wealth and anchors our hope in Him alone. How Financial Discipleship DiffersIt's easy to confuse financial discipleship with financial stewardship or freedom. Stewardship may stop at wise resource management, but discipleship goes further—it's about helping others learn, apply, and multiply biblical truth for God's glory. True discipleship always leads to transformation, both personally and in community.Compass Financial Ministry exists to equip believers to live this way. Through resources, training, and community, they help people break free from the love of money and serve God more fully. Financial discipleship is really about helping others learn, apply, and multiply everything for God's glory, rather than for our own. Adam and Eve are the first people to be married in the Bible. But even though they failed in their marriage, God gives us a blueprint for how to build a marriage His way.

Forgiveness is Key to Better Relationships: Interview With Brian & Heather Mayer Forgiveness can feel like the most unfair, unnatural thing in the world. When someone has wounded you—especially someone who was supposed to love you—choosing to forgive may feel like letting them off the hook. But Brian and Heather Mayer's story reminds us: forgiveness isn't about the other person's worthiness—it's about God's mercy. And it's the path to freedom, not just for them… but for you. Why Christian Marriages Struggle With Forgiveness Heather didn't realize how deeply unforgiveness had taken root. Even after their marriage began to turn a corner, her heart stayed guarded. She found herself stuck emotionally. The walls she had put up to protect herself were still up. And though they gave the illusion of strength, what they actually offered was isolation. She said, “I didn't feel like forgiving. I didn't want to say the words. But I knew the Bible said I had to. So I chose to obey—even without the feelings.” This is what many Christian spouses experience. You know the right thing to do, but your emotions don't follow. And it's tempting to wait until you “feel ready.” But true biblical forgiveness isn't based on emotion—it's a decision of the will rooted in trust that God can heal what you cannot. How Unforgiveness Destroys Connection in Marriage Brian admitted he had been prideful and blind to Heather's needs. But what changed him wasn't just guilt—it was God's grace. He realized that he needed to ask for forgiveness, not just from Heather, but from their children, too. “I had to go back and apologize, not just for being short or irritable—but for the way my behavior affected my family.” He humbled himself, opened his heart, and began walking out a different kind of love—one marked by patience, listening, and repentance. That humility created space for healing. Unforgiveness doesn't just affect the person who hurt you—it poisons your heart, your communication, your marriage bed, and even your parenting. Because where pride builds walls of resentment to isolate, humility builds bridges and invites healing. What the Bible Says About Forgiveness in Marriage God never promised forgiveness would be easy—but He did say it's essential. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Jesus modeled radical forgiveness on the cross. And He calls His followers to extend that same grace in our closest relationships—even in marriage. Brian and Heather didn't wait until things “felt better.” They took action. They forgave before the emotions lined up. And that obedience opened the door for healing. Choosing to Forgive Even When You've Been Deeply Hurt Forgiveness does not mean: Forgetting what happened Pretending it didn't hurt Ignoring necessary boundaries But it does mean surrendering the right to punish. It means releasing bitterness so you can receive peace. It means trusting God with your pain instead of letting it define your future. Healing Starts With Forgiveness Bitterness promises protection—but delivers bondage. Forgiveness opens the floodgates of grace—not just for your spouse, but for you. For your kids. For your home. For your legacy. You don't have to live angry. You don't have to stay stuck. There is freedom on the other side of obedience. There is peace that replaces pain. There is joy waiting where there used to be fear. And best of all? You don't walk this alone. The God who forgave you will empower you to forgive—again and again. Final Encouragement: Forgiveness Is the Gateway to Freedom Brian and Heather's story is living proof that no marriage is too far gone. That even the most painful seasons can become a testimony of God's redemption. Maybe your spouse has wounded you deeply. Or maybe you're the one who's caused the pain. Either way, Jesus stands ready to walk you both into something new. Today, start with one brave act of obedience: “I choose to forgive.” Even if your hands tremble. Even if your heart still aches. God will meet you there. And the freedom you long for is closer than you think. Marital Success is Your Spiritual Responsibility If you've been listening to the Delight Your Marriage podcast or reading these blogs for a while, you know I don't take marriage lightly. And if you're a follower of Jesus, I want to lovingly remind you: your marriage is a spiritual responsibility. This isn't just about your personal happiness or even your kids' well-being—though those matter deeply. No, the success of your marriage speaks volumes to everyone who knows you, especially those who know you're a Christian. Why Your Marriage Is Bigger Than You Think about it: if people know you follow Jesus, but your marriage falls apart, what does that say about the relevance of Jesus in your life? About the Bible? About the power of God? Yes, divorce is painful for the children—but it's also painful spiritually for everyone who witnesses it. We're supposed to be making disciples of all people, right? So when our marriage breaks down, we're tarnishing the very witness we're meant to live out. I say this from personal experience. My first marriage ended in divorce, and I carry that pain and regret. It wasn't a biblical divorce—I had to plead the blood of Jesus over it. But I've repented, I've been forgiven, and now I've made a decision: I will never again allow my marriage to dishonor the name of Jesus. I want the same for you. It's Time to Prioritize Marriage—for the Gospel If you're reading this, there's a good chance your faith is already strong. You want biblical answers, not pop psychology. Thank you. If I can help you have a great marriage, your work for the Kingdom becomes that much easier. But let's be real. Marriage is hard. It's easy to get selfish. It's easy to get frustrated with your spouse being a messy, imperfect human (just like we are!). But we can't stay in that space. We've got to pull ourselves out of our self-centeredness and serve. Husbands, Scripture calls you to die for your wife. Wives, we're called to submit to our husbands. I know—it's not easy. Believe me, I don't like that verse either. I've struggled with being a controlling wife. But control is rooted in fear. And fear means I'm not trusting God. When both spouses choose to obey God, not based on their spouse's actions but based on God's call—that's where transformation begins. We're not left wondering what marriage is supposed to be. God gave us His Word. It's the most printed, most transformative book in human history. You don't have to guess what it means to be a godly husband or wife—it's all there. Marriage: God's Tool for Healing Your spouse can hurt you the most—or they can be the very instrument God uses to heal you the most. I've lived both. And I want to be the kind of wife who makes my husband's meeting with Jesus even better because he was married to me. What if that was your motivation? That your love could heal your spouse. That your encouragement could empower them into God's purpose for their life. That your gentle presence could become their safe space in this tough world. That's the kind of love Jesus shows us—and the kind we're called to give. Love Your Spouse the Way They Receive Love This is one of our core teachings at DYM: love your spouse the way they receive love. The Bible tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves. That means not giving chocolate ice cream if they love vanilla. It means learning what makes them feel safe, respected, cherished. Husbands need to feel safe, known, and cherished. Wives need to feel respected, admired, and pursued in wholehearted sexual intimacy. (If you'd like to learn more, we break this down in our free framework at delightym.com/framework. It's an amazing starting point to grow in loving your spouse practically and biblically.) Growth Is the Goal Friend, you didn't find this blog because you're failing. You're here because you want to grow. And that's beautiful. That matters. Don't give up on the hard days when it feels like no one sees your effort. God does. He sees every unseen act of love, every sacrifice, every decision to forgive. We don't get to skip the suffering. Jesus didn't. Paul didn't. In fact, suffering is often God's tool for growth, purification, and transformation. But you don't have to do this alone. There's help. There's hope. And there is healing. PPS - Here is a quote from a recent graduate: "I love life and am dreaming again because God has bought healing to my marriage. It's like all the stop buttons that were pushed because I was out of alignment with God's will in my marriage have been pushed to Go/Green again... I feel more aligned, more focused, and things are moving again."
There's a saying, “The best time to plant a tree is right now.” Does that logic apply to inheritances?Well, it might in some cases. In other words, is there a benefit to giving your kids an early inheritance? And how exactly would you do that? Harlan Accola joins us today to talk about how a reverse mortgage can accomplish that.Harlan Accola is the National Reverse Mortgage Director at Movement Mortgage, an underwriter of Faith and Finance. He is also the author of Home Equity and Reverse Mortgages: The Cinderella of the Baby Boomer Retirement. Understanding a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM)Reverse mortgages have evolved significantly over the years, offering new opportunities for financial planning in retirement. A Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), often referred to simply as a reverse mortgage, is an FHA-insured loan that allows homeowners to convert part of their home equity into cash while still maintaining ownership.Unlike some traditional reverse mortgages of the past, a HECM is non-recourse, meaning borrowers will never owe more than the home's value, and the loan cannot be called due as long as they continue to pay property taxes and insurance and live in the home. The equity remains with the homeowner and their heirs, with the only change being the portion that is used. Another advantage? The proceeds are tax-free, making it a useful tool for financial planning. The Role of Reverse Mortgages in Retirement PlanningWhile many people focus on eliminating debt entirely in retirement, a reverse mortgage can serve as a strategic financial asset rather than simply a last resort. Many retirees overlook the potential of their home equity as part of their financial portfolio. Instead of just passing a home down to heirs, a reverse mortgage allows parents to leverage their equity while living, providing financial assistance to their children and grandchildren when they need it most.Giving an Early Inheritance: Why It Makes SenseOne of the most meaningful ways to use a reverse mortgage is to give an early inheritance—sharing wealth with children or grandchildren while still being alive to witness its impact. As Ron Blue famously said, “Do your giving while you're living so you're knowing where it's going.”Biblical wisdom teaches that wealth should be passed along with wisdom, guiding the next generation not only in how to manage money but also in understanding generosity and stewardship. Many parents already do this when their children are young—teaching them to give, save, and spend wisely. But what about when they are adults? A reverse mortgage provides an opportunity to continue that guidance by offering financial assistance at a time when it may be most needed. How an Early Inheritance Can HelpHere are some practical ways a reverse mortgage can be used to bless children and grandchildren:1. Helping with a Down Payment on a HomeWith rising housing prices and interest rates, many younger adults struggle to afford a home. Parents can use their home equity to provide a down payment for their children, reducing the amount they need to borrow and making homeownership more affordable.2. Funding Private Christian EducationMany families prioritize faith-based education, but tuition costs can be a burden. A reverse mortgage can help cover private school tuition for grandchildren, ensuring they receive a strong biblical foundation in their education.3. Supporting Family Mission Trips or VacationsShared experiences can create lasting memories and strengthen family bonds. Whether it's funding a mission trip or a multi-generational vacation, using home equity can allow families to invest in relationships and spiritual growth together. Are There Risks to Using a Reverse Mortgage for an Early Inheritance?Like any financial tool, a reverse mortgage should be part of a well-thought-out plan. Here are a few key considerations:Ensure Long-Term Financial Stability—Before giving away wealth, make sure your own financial needs are met, including healthcare and living expenses. Plan for Healthcare Costs—Unexpected medical expenses can arise, so long-term care planning is essential before using home equity for other purposes. Use Funds Wisely—An early inheritance should be given with intentionality, not just as a financial gift, but as an opportunity to teach stewardship and align with biblical principles.Making the Right DecisionIf you're considering a reverse mortgage as part of your financial plan, here are a few steps to ensure you're making a wise choice:Work with a Trusted Christian Advisor—Seek guidance from a financial professional who understands both biblical principles and financial wisdom. That's why we recommend working with a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA), which you can find at FaithFi.com. Just click "Find a Professional." Pray About It—Ask God for wisdom to determine how this decision fits into His plans for your life and your family's future. Evaluate Your Goals—Consider how a reverse mortgage aligns with your long-term financial and spiritual priorities.By planning wisely and giving generously, you can leave a legacy of faith and financial stewardship that impacts generations to come. For those interested in exploring whether a reverse mortgage is a good option for their retirement plan, the team at Movement Mortgage can provide guidance. All of our major Christian doctrines, and our Christian worldview, are grounded in the history in Genesis.
Today I explain why I think Christianity is suffering from a Trintiran heresy. It has manifested itself among some noted evangelical ministers and in the work of many of our most significant state and national Christian legal and policy advocacy organizations. I didn't fully understand their aversion to restoring male-female marriage in law until this week. It crystalized when I learned that Tennessee Republicans, mostly evangelical, UNANIMOUSLY voted for legislation to make if OFFICIAL that male and female are irrelevant to the nature and purpose of a marital relationship. Tennessee's Christian Governor signed it into law. Here's the story. To see what I referred to, the video is at senatorfowler94.substack.com.
