Pastor Mike, Sermons, www.yuma1st.org

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the liturgical calendar year. It is referred to as the “Reign of Christ” Sunday, but it has also been called “Christ the King” Sunday. Our passage this week inspires us to think carefully about the notion of Christ as “king.” When Jesus was brought by the Jewish leaders to Pilate for punishment, Pilate asked him, “Are you king of the Jews?” Jesus doesn't explicitly answer him, but he says that his kingdom is not of this world. As we reflect on the past year and prepare for the Advent season of a new year, it may be helpful to ask ourselves how we see our relationship with Christ. Do we follow Christ in our daily lives? In the last couple of weeks, we have talked about the gifts we have received from God and our role as stewards. This week we will reflect on the gifts we give back to God, what it means to follow Christ, and how we view our relationship with Christ.

Seattle's Union Gospel Mission has been serving the homeless and needy of its community for nearly 90 years. But now, the Washington Supreme Court has given it the Hobson's choice of changing its religious beliefs or closing its doors. “[O]ur beliefs are everything to us,” Scott Chin, president of Seattle's Union Gospel Mission, says, adding that it is “unimaginable that we would change our beliefs just so that we could continue operating.” In 2017, Matthew Woods applied for a lawyer position with the organization. The mission requires all of its employees to hold and live by the ministry's Christian beliefs, but Woods was open about the fact that he does not profess Christianity. Woods sued the homeless ministry after he was not hired for the job.The Washington Supreme Court ruled against the ministry, but now Chin is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to take up his case and defend the religious freedoms the organization has practiced freely for decades. “We're hopeful that the U.S. Supreme Court will reverse the Washington Supreme Court and adopt the rule that is prevalent in many other circuits around the country,” says Jake Warner, an attorney with the Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom. Chin and Warner join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain why Seattle's Union Gospel Mission is fighting for its right to the free exercise of religion. Also on today's show, we read your letters to the editor and share a good news story about a couple who adopted two sets of twins on the same day. Enjoy the show! Many churches aim to give people a smooth experience from the moment they pull into the parking lot. Get the people in, get them caffeinated, get them into their seats and get them out the door and back into their cars. It ends up coming across as a performance. For the first time in a long time, at this church for the homeless, I could be who I am while I sat and listened to the pastor's message. Then we transition to C.S. Lewis' book, 'Mere Christianity' and chapter one's 'Law of Human Nature.' From here, we move to different types of fear and how many scripture translations should have used the word 'awe' instead of fear. Why? Because throughout scripture men and women prostrated themselves in the presence of angelic beings, and Jesus Himself, and their response to humans was, "Do not be afraid." Obviously, the fear these humans felt was not where the Angels and Jesus wanted them to stay, because close on the heels of fear is hate.

Join me today for interview 5 with Jen Sarookanian. Jen is a trusted friend with a heart of gold. Today we explore a passion of hers; serving the Homeless community in Hamilton,ON. Jen leads the Homeless Ministry through the 'I Heart my City' Ministry at Living Hope Church. Her and the team set out each week to meet practical needs through sharing food, clothing, prayer and love with those in our community navigating homelessness. She explains how this passion ignited for her and how her perception of homelessness has shifted. She believes strongly that every person matters and sets out each week to be that reminder for those who may have forgotten it. Jen has learned so much by connecting with people, their stories and seeing the struggle behind their current circumstances. Homelessness can happen for a number of reasons, such as lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, mental illness and substance abuse to name a few. The Covid 19 pandemic has added a whole new level to this other pandemic for people in our communities. Some individuals do not have the tools and resources, but still need that reminder that they matter and are not forgotten. We all need to be reminded of this daily inorder to truly flourish and transform our lives. I am so thankful for Jen's impact in doing this and for being a light to others in a dark time. We can't change the world, but we can meet practical needs and share hope one person at a time. If you want to get involved or donate you can contact Jen on Instagram at @Jsarook or at Findhope.tv under I Heart my City. Taking up Jen's challenge and keeping 'blessing bags' in your car all year round is another great way to spread hope and meet needs in a practical way. The scripture I leave with you today is from Matthew 25:40 "And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!" Keep shining your light my friends because it truly does matter!

In the first episode of Season Two (Episode #014) of the Live the More podcast, CEO of Austin Street Center Daniel Roby shares why we need the weak who live among us and how we can care for those facing homelessness. Daniel Roby has been the CEO of Austin Street Center for nearly six years; he believes the most vulnerable members of our city should have access to their basic needs despite the limitation of their resources.  Austin Street Center is a homeless shelter in the heart of Dallas, TX, where several hundred people shelter every night. What makes this shelter truly unique is its holistic approach to homelessness. They boast a mental health clinic and are connected with ~150 housing units, helping their temporary residents find longer-term housing. And with a chapel onsite hosting three services a day, Austin Street Center also provides spiritual care for some of the weakest, most vulnerable people on the Dallas city streets. Unfortunately, homelessness is on the rise and has been for the past two decades. By its very nature, homelessness is impossible to measure with 100% accuracy but according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors report 2008, 19 of the 25 cities reported an increase in homelessness over the previous year. More specifically, 16 cities reported an increase in the number of homeless families. And the recent foreclosures crisis has had a dramatic effect on families and individuals. (National Coalition for the Homeless) Our guest Brian Jenkins has lived his life in giving to others. In 1996, beginning only with the will of service, a few of his own personal finances and a bullhorn, Brian and his wife Shandai, started feeding the homeless in Philadelphia from the trunk of their car. Two short years later Brian founded Chosen300, a ministry that now serves the needs of the homeless individuals and families around the world. The mission of Chosen 300 is to unite people despite our differences in race, ethnic group, denomination, social class or economic class for the common good of helping others. Brian's personal story of triumph is just as encouraging as he was raised through the foster care system after the death of his mother when he was five years old. WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY! Join us for a lively and engaging discussion and learn how you can help support the homeless!
