We're sure you'll find a number of great ideas in this interview to bring to your game the next time you step on the ice.And in our second feature interview we catch up with seven-year veteran Troy Grosenick, who is coming off a .920 season in the AHL, to talk about what it's like to be a part of this game of goaltending musical chairs after he signed with the Los Angeles Kings, and get some bonus input on the stress of life in the NHL playoff bubble with a baby on the way back home, how posture played a role in his steady rise over the past four seasons, and how this second offseason reminds him of youth hockey as he gets changed in parking lots loaded with NHL players. In the Gear Segment sponsored by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, Woody and Cam go through the entire line of Bauer Helmets looking at innovations for comfort and protection as well as choosing the right helmet for your game.
Presented by the Hockey Shop Source for Sports, Frantz Jean is the Goaltending Coach of the 2020 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. We talk about his path to the NHL, becoming a coach despite never playing in the NHL, his mentors including a lengthy look at Francois Allaire and his impact on the game, and coaching a diverse group of goaltenders including Nabokov, Bishop, Roloson and now of course Vasilevskiy. Of course we also look at what makes Vasi great, how he sets himself apart from the rest, and why he may be the future of goaltending.
Sami Jo Small is a 3-time Olympian, 5-time World Champion - where she was twice MVP, Co-Founder of the CWHL (Canadian Women's Hockey League) has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford - earned while balancing her time as a National Team goaltender AND a track and field scholarship athlete - and that is just scratching the surface for this decorated and accomplished athlete. Dylan Ferguson and Eli Wilson, who Ferguson has worked with in the summers for many years, join us from camp in Edmonton where they are training together to talk development and the road to the National Hockey League. Whether you are a young goaltender looking to take your next steps or a parent looking to support your son or daughter, there is a lot to take in from this nearly hour-long discussion. Ferguson, the Vegas Golden Knights Prospect, got the call of a lifetime while still playing in the WHL for the Kamloops Blazers - he was needed in New York where the Golden Knights were to take on the Rangers. That call up led to his NHL debut vs. Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers before he returned to finish his season in junior hockey. He talks to us about his road to pro, from Tier 3 Bantam to the best league in the world. Wilson has coached at all levels, including the NHL and has developed countless goaltenders for the top leagues in the world. This includes work with Carey Price in the summers, much of it documented at InGoal. Wilson is also the goaltending coach for the Tri City Americans of the WHL.
Recently named to the 2020 class of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Kim St. Pierre will be the first female goaltender inducted into the Hall. St. Pierre was our guest this week on the InGoal Radio Podcast, and today we bring that interview to our Premium Members ahead of its public release on the podcast. This interview has so many great takeaways for goaltenders; it will have something for everyone. It was without a doubt one of our favorites — and not just because she managed to “one more question” our Kevin Woodley! We’re glad she did because it was to make another important point in an interview filled with them. With a bit of everything from her incredible Hall of Fame career, there are lessons for goaltenders at all levels whether just starting out or playing, as St. Pierre did, at the highest levels of the game. Kim’s thoughts on mindset and how she learned to deal with the pressure of International Play resonate not just for elite goaltenders but are also framed for young goaltenders just starting out. Her approach to the game, preparation, and practice hold lessons for all of us. St. Pierre earned 3 Olympic Gold Medals, 5 World Championship gold and as a member of Team Canada set records with 15 shutouts and a remarkable .840 goals against average. We hope that you enjoy this interview as much as we did — and we look forward to the next opportunity to bring this Hall of Fame goaltender to the InGoal audience.
Goaltending Coach Dustin Schwartz caught up with Kevin Woodley to talk about development, with a particular focus on approaches he has taken during the NHL pause running virtual development camps and professional development, including the recent WHL/Hockey Canada goaltending symposium that InGoal presented. They dove into the importance of a technical foundation for young goaltenders and three key elements: tracking, movement and positioning. While we hear about tracking now all the time, Schwartz explains how it is so much more than watching the puck. He notes that it is a key element in your mobility and indeed all aspects of the position — not just the save execution. Schwartz, a WHL and USports goaltender himself, is also a trained teacher. He touches on how that is inseparable from his coaching and his approach of working with each goaltender as an individual - whether working with someone from his own vintage in Mike Smith with the Oilers or with youngsters much as he did when he began working with Carter Hart as a 12-year old.
InGoal had a chance to catch up with Scott Darling just as fans in his hometown Chicago celebrating the five-year anniversary of him helping the Blackhawks win the 2015 Stanley Cup, and as usual it was an entertaining and informative chat with the 31-year-old self-described goaltending geek. Darling shared tips and insights from a 10-year pro career that includes stops everywhere from the Southern Professional Hockey League right up to the NHL, and over to Austria last season, how Covid-19 has affected his plans for the immediate future both on and off the ice, including a cancelled wedding, and his plans to keep playing. He talked about important lessons he learned about managing his game as a backup sometimes caught between being target practice for teammates and needing to stay sharp himself, including for that crucial First Round relief appearance that helped Chicago win the Cup in 2015; how he learned that there is such a thing as studying too much video of yourself; his early inspirations and first set of pads and ensuing gear obsession, including how he came to have a glove model linked to his name; and the grassroots origin story of why he will never again wear anything other than pads and gloves from Brian’s Custom Sports.
Chris Driedger was in the midst of a breakthrough season when the NHL shut its doors two months ago, establishing himself as an everyday option by posting a .938 save percentage for the Florida Panthers more than eight seasons after being drafted by the Ottawa Senators. For Driedger, who turns 26 this month, it hasn’t always been an easy path from third-round pick to NHL regular but the journey, which included spending time in the ECHL as recently as two seasons ago, has provided the Winnipeg-born goaltender with a lot of valuable lessons and insights into what it really takes to make it to the world’s best league. From how to approach practice, even when they’re running drills set up for the goalie to fail, to managing his mindset before and during games and what he learned from Roberto Luongo and is still learning from Sergei Bobrovsky, as well as a detailed breakdown of his game-day routine right up to how he maintains focus through the national anthems, Driedger spent close to an hour sharing those lessons with InGoal.
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports ,we have a lengthy chat with legendary mask maker and artist Greg Harrison. His clients are a who's who of goaltending and if you are a fan of classic masks you'll recognize his work in an instant. Gratton's famous lion, Rutherford's wings, Bannerman, Bromley, Belfour, Potvin and hundreds more. He is also the man who brought us the combo mask we all wear today. Oh, and lets not forget that he was a goaltender himself, 13 years a practice goalie for the Leafs, long before anyone knew who David Ayers was and came close to having his own moment in the spotlight. Greg is making custom masks today and can be reached directly via Instagram @GregHarrisonTheMask, or through GoalieParts.com In the interview we talk about the famous Lion of Gilles Gratton - you might enjoy this article from InGoal when we caught up with Gratton several years ago. In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we chat with longtime pro goaltender and coach David Leggio. He’s won a championship with Clarkson University where he earned the leagues top goalie award, he’s been an American League starter. He twice represented his country at the World Championships and at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. He won a Finnish league championship with TPS and played 4 years in the German League where he also won a Championship with Red Bull Munich...oh, and you might know him because two leagues changed their rules when he knocked his net over, preferring to face a penalty shot than a 2-on-0, even signaling for the penalty shot himself. We love that bold creativity, but we loved this interview even more for everything else he brings to the conversation. Leggio has worked with so many great coaches and goalie-partners over the years as he built his own impressive pro resume, that he has insights as a goaltender that make for fascinating conversation. We talk technical insights, deploying tandems, dealing with adversity, including a very significant concussion, and more. We're already looking forward to our next conversation with David Leggio. In the gear segment presented by the Hockey Shop, Cam and Woody get back together to look at Bauer's 2S line, both Pro and other price points as they are now on sale with some fantastic deals! You can see all the deals they discussed right here at TheHockeyshop.com/goal and you can check out InGoal's review of the 2S Pro right here at InGoalMag.com
In this Episode of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports , we have a lengthy interview with one of the finest women's goaltenders in the world - Noora Räty of Finland, now playing professionally for Kunlun Red Star in China. Her National Team career began at 15, the Olympics at 16, she has an remarkable NCAA record, including an undefeated senior season with a .956 save %, and has been playing for Kunlun since 2017. Like all the pros we meet, Räty shares her story of beginning in net and her development into a pro. She also gives us her thoughts on the challenges facing the women's professional game today. There's no Uber in Vancouver but Kevin Woodley is quickly becoming the "Uber for Goalies" as we're beginning to think he chauffeurs every NHL pro in town around in his car. This week Freddie Andersen hopped in with Woody and had a chat that we'll all enjoy. There's lots more from the goalie world including small cameos from Tim Thomas and Carey Price, talk of lacrosse goals, and a scary scene in the Ontario Hockey League. For our gear segment, our Ask Cam was so popular last week that it returns, rebranded with a slightly less awkward name, thanks to InGoal listener Alan Nosworthy, as Questions for Cam. They talk about helmets - do you really have to buy the top of the line? are there options? Fitting gloves as minor hockey goalies grow - or if you're a tiny-handed adult like Hutch - and things get a bit personal as one reader asks how many cups Cam wears on the ice! You might be surprised to hear how many....
On the best episode of From Center Ice to date, Cat Silverman (The Athletic, InGoal) joins us to chat about goalies. This week on InGoal Radio presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports we give you sneak peek at the future of goaltending with Spencer Knight, the consensus top-ranked goaltender for the NHL Draft this weekend in Vancouver. It’s a compelling conversation, with Knight talking about the importance of patience on his skates, his approach to wide-open practice drills against some of the best players his age on the US National Team Development Program (including projected No. 1 pick Jack Hughes), and how playing as a forward, both in hockey and for even longer in lacrosse, has helped him become a better goaltender and puck handler. There’s plenty of good advice for young goalies and parents alike, and after listening to the future Boston College goalie talk about the position for close to half an hour, it’s easy to understand why so many expect him to be selected in the first round on Friday. Plus, we recap the Stanley Cup run by impressive St. Louis Blues rookie Jordan Binnington (and explain why his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs would never have drafted the 6-foot-1 stopper), discuss some of the other trends that dominate the draft discussions about puck stoppers, and we check in with Cam at The Hockey Shop for a complete overview of the new Bauer Vapor 2X Pro chest protector.
