The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs may have changed the fantasy hockey outlook for a handful of players heading into next season. In this episode, Blake looks at the playoff performers who separated themselves from the pack — and what their postseason runs could mean for 2026-27 fantasy hockey drafts. Mitch Marner went nuclear in Vegas and may still be undervalued because of old playoff narratives. Brett Howden turned a bigger role into a monster goal-scoring run. Carolina's second line of Jackson Blake, Taylor Hall, and Logan Stankoven looked like a legitimate weapon. Leo Carlsson flashed superstar upside. And Zach Benson may have played his way into a bigger role in Buffalo. Were these just playoff heaters, or did we get an early look at next year's fantasy hockey values?Let's get to BIZ!
This week on Sports Guyz Only, the boys kick things off with a birthday controversy, concussion counts, aging athlete problems, and a debate over whether anyone under 30 can truly appreciate how quickly the body starts betraying you. Cal celebrates another trip around the sun, Gavin accidentally misses the birthday by a day, and the crew somehow ends up discussing CTE before they've even touched sports. From there, it's a full playoff recap as the guys break down the Carolina Hurricanes' dominant Stanley Cup run. They discuss Jordan Staal's unbelievable playoff performance at age 37, whether he's one of the most underrated players of the last two decades, Rod Brind'Amour's growing Carolina legacy, and how the Hurricanes put together one of the most dominant postseason runs of the modern NHL era. Plus, Taylor Hall's redemption story, Brandon Bussey's improbable Finals debut, and why Vegas may have finally run into the one team built to beat them. The conversation shifts to the NBA Finals, where the Knicks capture their first championship in over 50 years. The crew debates whether it was the most competitive gentleman's sweep ever, questions the Spurs' late-game coaching decisions, and dives into Jalen Brunson's place in Knicks history. There's also plenty of discussion about Victor Wembanyama's increasingly villainous reputation, Mike Brown's coaching redemption arc, and whether Minnesota may eventually need a new voice leading Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves. Plus: World Cup excitement and Messi's final international run NHL tax advantages and why Florida keeps attracting stars The greatest "what if" playoff scenarios Steve Kerr's all-time unfortunate naming decision Shohei Ohtani gambling conspiracy theories Vikings frustrations and Brian O'Neill debates A chaotic sports trivia showdown that ends with Nathaniel taking the crown As always, it's championship reactions, wild sports hypotheticals, old-man complaints, and enough hockey talk to make Gavin happy for at least one week. The Vancouver Canucks officially turned the page by hiring Manny Malhotra as head coach, signalling a commitment to a rebuild centred around accumulating young talent and draft picks rather than chasing short-term success. In Montreal, the Canadiens’ season ended at the hands of Carolina, with an emotional Brendan Gallagher acknowledging that he may have played his final game as a Canadien. The hockey world also lost Claude Lemieux, whose family donated his brain to CTE research; Ray reflected on Lemieux as one of the toughest opponents he ever faced — incredibly strong, relentlessly competitive and built for big moments. Looking ahead to the Stanley Cup Final, Carolina appears to be the strongest version of itself in years thanks to key additions like K’Andre Miller and Nikolaj Ehlers, strong goaltending from Frederik Andersen, and the emergence of Taylor Hall as a leader alongside Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake. On the other side, the Golden Knights have become a rare success story after hiring John Tortorella with just eight games remaining in the regular season, a gamble that has paid off as Vegas has improved with each playoff round.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ahead of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne, and Sam McKee start with some news around the league with the Canucks promoting Manny Malhotra to head coach, and Chris MacFarland leaving Colorado to be the Predators' GM. Vally reflects on each team's path to the Final, who has the edge in net between Freddie Andersen and Carter Hart, whether the Hurricanes' top line can break through, and how K'Andre Miller and Taylor Hall have found their fit in Carolina. Later, they play a Cup Final-themed game of Grill Marks! Finally, Nick, Justin, and Sam wrap up with their series picks, Zach Werenski winning the Norris, and the Leafs-centric reporting around Mitch Marner. The Montreal Canadiens responded after an early Buffalo goal in Game 3, dominating much of the night with their speed and depth as Alex Newhook scored twice and the Habs’ centres continued to outplay the Sabres down the middle. Buffalo struggled defensively, Alex Lyon was repeatedly left exposed, and tensions boiled over following a collision between Beck Malenstyn and goalie Jakob Dobes that sparked a discussion about whether post-whistle penalties should carry over into the next playoff game. Meanwhile, Carolina completed a sweep of Philadelphia with an OT win in Game 4, continuing a dominant postseason run built on elite team defence, strong health and a resurgence from Taylor Hall, though a lengthy layoff before Round 3 could become a concern. Despite the sweep, the Flyers took a major step forward this season under Rick Tocchet, though more roster additions are still needed before relying heavily on young prospects like Porter Martone and Alex Bump. Out West, Anaheim evened its series with Vegas at 2-2 after a 4-3 win powered by Cutter Gauthier’s three assists, continuing an impressive playoff showing from a young Ducks team that is quickly learning it can compete and win at this level. Mitch Marner’s three-point night gave him the playoff scoring lead and his overall play has prompted praise from John Tortorella regarding lingering Toronto narratives around his game. The Wild also pushed back against Colorado with a huge Game 3 win to keep their series alive, setting up a critical Game 4 as Colorado considers whether to stick with Scott Wedgewood or turn to Mackenzie Blackwood after an uneven outing.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(25:18) Patrick Dumas turns the focus back to hockey with some early Conn Smythe Trophy picks from around the Stanley Cup Playoffs! The conversation includes Frederik Andersen, Jesper Wallstedt, and Mitch Marner as leading candidates, plus some darker horse names like Quinn Hughes, Kirill Kaprizov, and Taylor Hall. Closing out the show is ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, who provides an unfiltered reaction to the 'spectacle' in Toronto following the hiring of John Chayka and Mats Sundin. Wyshynski then dives into the Oilers' post-mortem, offering his take on the raw honesty from McDavid and Draisaitl during their year-end media sessions. With the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery happening tonight in Secaucus, Greg gives us a live update from the scene and a surprising answer on which team truly needs the first overall pick. Plus, we get his thoughts on Taylor Hall's resurgent postseason in Carolina—including his Game 2 overtime winner—and a breakdown of the Golden Knights' Game 1 statement win over the Ducks. We finished the show like we always do with The Wrap from William Huff.

Former NHL President, GM and Head Coach, Doug MacLean (1:38) joins Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne to chat about the rumblings surrounding the next general manager with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks, the lack of veteran names in the running, why the Leafs should not hire a 'first-time GM', Taylor Hall's hit on Jake Sanderson, Philadelphia Flyers looking like a complete team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, if he believes in the young Montreal Canadiens, and Connor McDavid's scoreless to start the post-season. The Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche and Philadelphia Flyers are all on the verge of first-round sweeps, while pressure continues to mount across the rest of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. We start in Carolina, where the Ottawa Senators delivered a flat performance and their power play failed to deliver in a critical moment. How concerning has Brady Tkachuk's quiet start been, and should the league look at the Taylor Hall hit on Jake Sanderson?Out West, the Los Angeles Kings managed to limit Nathan MacKinnon, but it still wasn't enough against the depth of the Colorado Avalanche. Is this simply a mismatch?McDavid has zero points in two games but how long with this slump last?
