One of our biggest episodes every year: the Detroit Red Wings Season in Review. Tune in as we start our 2024/2025 Red Wings NHL season recap by covering our overall sentiments on the season, and how the transition from Derek Lalonde to Todd McLellan after Steve Yzerman fired the former really split the year into 2 parts (5:00). We then jump into the offense, including overall play 5v5 and individual player analyses of Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, & Marco Kasper (23:25). We continue with Andrew Copp, Elmer Soderblom, Vladimir Tarasenko, J.T. Compher, Jonatan Berggren, Michael Rasmussen, and the rest of the Hockeytown forward group (52:00). We then jump into defense, including season breakdowns for Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson, Ben Chiarot, Jeff Petry, Justin Holl, Erik Gustafsson, and the entire Detroit blue line (1:07:40). Finally, the goaltending, including Ville Husso, Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, Petr Mrazek, and 1 game of Sebastian Cossa (1:27:40), before talking special teams, coaching with Todd McLellan, and Steve Yzerman's performance as general manager (1:33:35). Also, takeaways from the Red Wings locker room media, including Patrick Kane being likely to return to Detroit and Dylan Larkin's open frustration at the Red Wings' lack of trade deadline moves (1:42:35) & more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:46:10) - enjoy! The Detroit Red Wings and their young guns have clawed back into this thing, all while the NHL trade world had a massive bombshell deal. Tune in as we open (after commenting on the response to Kucherov's trip on Rasmussen) (00:00) by discussing the home Hockeytown win over Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens, including Dylan Larkin leading the way in his 700th game, Lucas Raymond's increasingly elite abilities, Jonatan Berggren, Alex DeBrincat, and Andrew Copp contributing (after Simon Edvinsson's block), & more (5:35). Next, Marco Kasper & Cam Talbot leading Detroit to a 2-0 win over Andrei Vasilevskiy & the Tampa Bay Lightning (even without Patrick Kane), including Kasper's redirect, Albert Johansson's fantastic play, Lilleberg's hit to J.T. Compher's head, a chippy game with Cirelli, Hedman & Co., and Nikita Kucherov's dirty trip on Michael Rasmussen's empty net goal (16:05). After that, a look at how the Red Wings rookies have been playing steadily better under Todd McLellan, including Elmer Soderblom, and what that means for future players like Nate Danielson & Carter Mazur - as well as a look at where Steve Yzerman's squad sits in the NHL wild card playoff race (28:45). Next up, a look at the NHL Quarter Century Team for the Detroit Red Wings (Steve Yzerman, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Osgood, Sergei Federov, Dylan Larkin, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Chelios, Brian Rafalski, Dominik Hasek), and whether Jimmy Howard or Mo Seider deserved a look (43:50), as well as an update on Axel Sandin Pellikka's plans to leave the SHL after this season to play for either Detroit or the Grand Rapids Griffins (48:20). We then jump into the insane blockbuster trade that happened in the NHL, as the Colorado Avalanche sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for Martin Necas (with Taylor Hall, Jack Drury, and other pieces coming into play thanks to the Chicago Blackhawks): what does this mean for MacKinnon, Makar & Co., how everyone did in the trade, whether the Red Wings can still sign Rantanen in free agency, where the Vancouver Canucks trying to thrade Elias Petterson and J.T. So much for the holiday break - tune into this EMERGENCY EPISODE of the Winged Wheel Podcast as we discuss Derek Lalonde and Bob Boughner being relieved of their duties by Steve Yzerman in Hockeytown, and Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney being hired to replace them. We open by discussing Newsy's firing, how the team performed under him, how Dylan Larkin's comments & poor performances by the team (outside of the like of Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, & Alex DeBrincat) affected his coaching tenure, if he deserved to be fired, & how much of the season was his fault (2:50).  Next, a look at Todd McLellan as a coach, his history with McDavid's Oilers and Kopitar's Kings, what type of system he plays, how much he can get out of the likes of Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, Vladimir Tarasenko, Marco Kasper, Jonatan Berggren, & others, whether Yzerman wanted Jim Montgomery, Gerrard Gallant, or Joel Quenneville, & what can realistically be expected of this season (still tanking for Hagens, Misa, Martone, Schaefer, etc.?) (11:55). After that, what Steve Yzerman has to do next to fix the roster (and when): a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for Dylan Cozens or Bowen Byram? Zegras from the Ducks? (32:40) Finally, Axel Sandin Pellikka kicks off the World Junior Championship by storm with a hat trick, scoring 3 goals and an assist for Team Sweden as the Detroit Red Wings prospect lights it up (as Augustine struggles a bit against Germany) (48:05). Tune in as we open by discussing the Detroit Red Wings and their two most recent games: a horrendous performance where Scott Laughton & Matvei Michkov danced around Derek Lalonde's squad despite Cam Talbot's best efforts (and a late Ben Chiarot goal), whether Sebastian Cossa would've made a difference, & John Tortorella & The Michigan (4:50), as well as a 4-2 win in Detroit over Matthews, Marner, & the Leafs, including Jack Campbell being called up to back up Ville Husso's 1st win of the season, Jeff Petry scoring twice (one being given to Rasmussen retroactively), Moritz Seider banging home a nice play from Andrew Copp and Patrick Kane, Berggren's ill-advised cross-check, offside reviews, Lucas Raymond sealing the game, & more (13:35)! The captain has returned and his presence was felt througout the lineup. Dylan Larkin scored twice in this game. The third line was also dominant as Christian Fischer had 3 points, Andrew Copp 2 goals and Michael Rasmussen 2 assists. On the back end, the top two pairs, especially Simon Edvinsson and Moritz Seider looked VERY steady. #LGRWSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. The Red Wings have taken 11 of a possible 12 points in the first half of January, righting the ship after a difficult December. Dylan Larkin had 3 goals, and Andrew Copp had 2 across the two games, as they get hot at a great time for Detroit. Detroit came out of the gate applying good pressure, but a missed call and a 2-on-1 gave Montreal an early lead. From there the game devolved. Losing races to the puck, losing battles in the corners and out front, and making passes to no one or through traffic, the Red Wings looked flustered and disjointed all night long. Thankfully the Canadiens weren't much better and Detroit was able to make it to OT, that was until James Reimer took the dumbest penalty i've seen from a goalie, leading to a game-winning PPG by Cole Caufield. The top line of Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat once again didn't produce, and we begin to wonder if they are snake bitten, or in need of a shakeup. BUT...Joe Veleno was good again, even earning a promotion to the 2nd line with JT Compher and Andrew Copp, who have been a dynamic pair. The Detroit Red Wings, with revamped forward lines and powerplay units, brought non-stop pressure to the Boston Bruins from start to finish. Despite getting down 2-0 early, the team didn't let that stifle them, battling back and overcoming two seperate defecits to hand the Bruins their 1st regulation loss. Lucas Raymond and Jake Walman (Walman IS HIM btw) both scored power play goals to tie it at 2. The offseason is here, and it's time to finally settle in, take stock of the Detroit Red Wings, see what else there is to be done for Steve Yzerman, and relax a bit (we're not going away, just going down to 1 episode/week for the summer). Tune in as we start by analyzing what the roster holes are in Hockeytown and what moves remain for Steve Yzerman to have truly built a playoff contender around Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, and Alex DeBrincat (4:25). We take a look at the William Nylander question, as unlikely as at is, and whether a trade for him would be worthwhile or even possible (11:15). Next, we tell you our "Red Wings to watch" as we approach next season: which players are we most curious to monitor over the course of a season? We discuss Jake Walman, Jonatan Berggren, Andrew Copp, JT Compher, & others (16:55). Next, with the remaining cap space, what else can Steve Yzerman do to leverage it, if anything (28:40)? Finally, our thoughts on Red Wings prospects/Grand Rapids Griffins players to watch as we discuss Nate Danielson, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Carter Mazur, Marco Kasper, William Wallinder, Albert Johansson, Simon Edvinsson, & many others (with some bonus rebuild GM strategy/salary cap talk) (32:50). After that, some NHL news (52:00) before we take your questions and comments during Overtime (54:30) - enjoy! Steve Yzerman did not take a break after the NHL Draft and made another big splash in free agency this year - tune in as we discuss, analyze, and project all of the additions and changes in Hockeytown! We start with JT Compher joining the Detroit Red Wings on a 5 year, $5.1 million/year contract, discussing where he fits in behind Dylan Larkin as a right-handed center, how this deal compares to Andrew Copp's, and how the term will age, & more (4:40). After that, the divisive Justin Holl contract, how it projects against the Ben Chiarot contract, whether he can offer RHD support behind Moritz Seider, what Steve Dangle had to say about him, & more (15:35). Next, Daniel Sprong and the efficient goal scoring he can replicate from the Seattle Kraken (28:20), Shayne Gostisbehere and how he can be Detroit's power play QB in a post-Hronek era (32:35), Klim Kostin being signed after Kailer Yamamoto was bought out (35:10), James Reimer and Alex Lyon being brought in to replace Alex Nedeljkovic and Ville Magnus Hellberg to backup Ville Husso (38:05), Christian Fischer coming in from Arizona, Gustav Lindstrom returning, & lots more (42:35). To cap off the free agency talk, we give our overall evaluation of the newest Detroit Red Wings free agent class, the Yzerplan moving forward, what Yzerman has to do to add high-end talent & scoring (DeBrincat? Nylander?), whether there's a roster jam that's blocking Marco Kasper, Elmer Soderblom, Carter Mazur, & other rookies, & lots more (45:20). More big news: Filip Zadina has been waived. Is this the end for Filip in Hockeytown? How did we get here from "Fil Their Nets"? (1:09:25) Finally, Tyler Bertuzzi signs a surprising contract in Toronto (1:16:05) & plenty more before we take your question during Overtime (1:23:05) - enjoy this massive episode!
