In the wake of Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel, Joe Biden stood by America's closest Middle Eastern partner, providing diplomatic cover and military aid. Recently, however, the Biden administration has become increasingly critical of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli operations in Gaza. In March, Biden refused to veto a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire without conditioning it on the release of Israeli hostages or acknowledging the atrocities of October 7. Why the sudden shift in tone from the Biden administration? Will the growing rift between Biden and Netanyahu affect Israel's war aims in Gaza? And how will Biden's failure to stand by Israel affect American partnerships in the region?Dan Senor is the host of the podcast Call Me Back and co-author of New York Times bestselling books The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation and Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploration into one key issue shaping Israel and the Jewish World — right now. For Israelis, there is before October 7 and after. So the idea of a book called “The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World” written during those “before” times may not feel like the most relevant reading material. But it is. “Start-Up Nation” authors Saul Singer and Dan Senor have again joined forces to dissect what makes Israelis tick — and keep on ticking. One conclusion? It's all about the unity of purpose. If that unity was once what made us strong, well, “Now it's become existential. If we don't stay unified, we're just going to go into a downward spiral,” says co-author Saul Singer. So this week, we speak with bestselling author Saul Singer and find out, what matters now. How has a small nation of 9 million people, forced to fight for its existence and security since its founding and riven by ethnic, religious, and economic divides, proven resistant to so many of the societal ills plaguing other wealthy democracies? Why do Israelis have among the world's highest life expectancies and lowest rates of “deaths of despair” from suicide and substance abuse? Why is Israel's population young and growing while all other wealthy democracies are aging and shrinking? How can it be that Israel, according to a United Nations ranking, is the fourth happiest nation in the world? Why do Israelis tend to look to the future with hope, optimism, and purpose while the rest of the West struggles with an epidemic of loneliness, teen depression, and social decline? The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World (Simon and Schuster, 2023), already on the New York Times' bestseller list, was written by Dan Senor and Saul Singer, the writers behind the international bestseller Start-Up Nation. They have long been students of the global innovation race. But as they spent time with Israel's entrepreneurs and political leaders, soldiers and students, scientists and activists, ultra-Orthodox Jews, Tel Aviv techies, and Israeli Arabs, they realized that they had missed what really sets Israel apart. Moving from military commanders integrating at-risk youth and people who are neurodiverse into national service, to high performing companies making space for working parents, from dreamers and innovators launching a duct-taped spacecraft to the moon, to bringing better health solutions to people around the world, The Genius of Israel tells the story of a diverse people and society built around the values of service, solidarity, and belonging. Widely admired for having the world's highest density of high-tech start-ups, Israel's greatest innovation may not be a technology at all, but Israeli society itself. Understanding how a country facing so many challenges can be among the happiest provides surprising insights into how we can confront the crisis of community, human connectedness, and purpose in modern life. Bold, timely, and insightful, Senor and Singer's latest work shines an important light on the impressive innovative distinctions of Israeli society—and what other communities and countries can learn. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken doesn't understand the source of hatred that led to the October 7 slaughter. He thinks the old “solutions” are still viable. They're not… One of the busiest freeways in the world, the 10 in downtown Los Angeles, is closed “indefinitely” after a massive fire, almost certainly caused by a “homeless encampment.”  A bureaucrat in a small Wisconsin town directs its employees not to publicly celebrate Christmas. It's not inclusive. This is a small example of a big problem: terminal wokeness… The great Ayan Hirsi-Ali, a long-avowed atheist, has declared that she is now a Christian.  Dan Senor, co-author with Saul Singer of the bestseller Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle. Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards.  First, Dom welcomes Dan Senor, author of the new The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World, on to discuss the continued conflict on the Gaza strip between Israel and Hamas. First, Senor contextualizes his career, telling of his time spent serving as a security advisor during the Bush administration. Then, Senor contextualizes the situation, with Giordano asking for Senor to lay out Israel's history and what led to the horrific attack by Hamas on October 7th. Then Senor tells why he believes so many have stood behind Palestine, enabling the actions of Hamas, with Senor laying out the desire to ‘feel necessary,' with young people feeling the need to support something, albeit misguidedly.  Then, Dom welcomes back to the show Steve Feldman, the Executive Director of Greater Philadelphia's Zionist Organization of America, to hear how the war in Gaza has effected both international and local affairs. First, Dom and Feldman discuss the revelation that CNN and AP News embedded reporters with Hamas, which causes Feldman to speak out about the way that the media has covered the conflict, pointing out multiple example of anti-Israel bias. Then, Feldman offers his thoughts on the IDF's film ‘Bearing Witness,' which is being shown in private showings to media influencers, with both Feldman and Giordano debating whether the video should be given a public release.

I'm endlessly fascinated by Israel. I travel to Israel regularly. Some may say this is a fraught period for anyone who cares about Israel. But in our new book, "The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World,” we write about the health and resilience of Israeli society, a topic that could not be more relevant to this period. He is a polymath, having written books ranging from biblical lessons for the modern age to Israel's geopolitics. His books include: "Catch-67: The Left, the Right, and the Legacy of the Six-Day War" and, more recently, "The Wondering Jew: Israel and the Search for Jewish Identity." Not only have all of his books been bestsellers in Israel, but he essentially created a new genre; books that bring core texts of Jewish thought to a general, secular audience. Micah also hosts the most downloaded podcast in Israel. In this episode, Micah and I focus on what effects a Saudi-Israel normalization deal could be on Israel's domestic political crisis.
