Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today, we bring you a special conversation held this week between three women bearing the name Rachel in honor of the traditional annual observance of the death of the biblical Rachel: ToI blogger Rachel Sharansky Danziger, war widow Rachel Goldberg and bereaved mother Rachel Goldberg-Polin. Rachel Goldberg and Rachel Goldberg-Polin share a name, a neighborhood, and a history. Rachel Goldberg's father was Rachel Goldberg-Polin's teacher at one time, and her husband, Rav Avi Goldberg, taught Rachel's son Hersh. Tragically, they now share the intolerable pain of loss. Rachel's son, Hersh Goldberg Polin, was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, from the Nova music festival. Rachel and her husband Jon advocated relentlessly for his release and continue to ask the world to push for the release of the remaining 101 hostages in Gaza. Hersh was murdered in Gaza in late August with five other hostages. Rachel's husband, Rav Avi Goldberg, served in the reserves for over 250 days since October 7, before falling in battle in Lebanon three weeks ago. As part of the ongoing efforts to continue Rav Avi's legacy and efforts (including his dream of building a shul for his community, Beorcha), Rabbi David Ansbacher, Rav Avi's brother-in-law, invited Rachel and Rachel to come together in honor of the anniversary of the death of Rachel the matriarch and share their experiences and insights. This conversation was facilitated by a third Rachel – Beorcha member and Times of Israel blogger Rachel Sharansky Danziger. The conversation, titled "Rachel weeping for her children," is available on video online and is now generously shared by Beorcha here in podcast form. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump held dueling events in the pivotal battleground state of Pennsylvania tonight with just weeks until Election Day. In Erie, Harris slammed Trump's comment suggesting that the U.S. military should handle “the enemy from within” on Election Day. Harris told her supporters that "he would use the military to go after them…and we know who he would target, because he has attacked them before: Journalists whose stories who he doesn't like, election officials who refuse to cheat by finding extra votes for him, judges who insist on following the law instead of bending to his will. This is among the reasons I believe so strongly that a second Trump term would be a huge risk for America, and dangerous.” Also tonight, Anderson speaks with Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, the 23-year-old Israeli-American hostage murdered a month-and-a-half ago by Hamas. In this thrilling episode directed by Rachel Goldberg and written by Laura Monti, we delve into Agatha Harkness's tumultuous past as she faces the return of the Salem Seven—witches she once killed. These formidable spirits, capable of transforming into animals, come back to haunt her, drawing a connection to Agatha's dark history in Salem during the 1600s.As the coven grapples with their predicament, a humorous yet poignant commentary arises about the traditional use of brooms, highlighted by Lilia's critique of their symbolism in modern culture. The witches take flight in a visually stunning homage to classic films like E.T., despite a modest budget.Inside a horror-themed cabin, the tension escalates with a Ouija board that sets strict rules for communication with spirits. As the clock ticks, Agatha encounters the wrath of her mother, Evanora Harkness, who possesses her, revealing a deep-rooted animosity. This confrontation leads to Alice, a protective witch, attempting to help Agatha, but ultimately, the powers shift dangerously in Agatha's favor. The episode escalates as the teen confronts Agatha, exposing her manipulative tendencies and the deadly pursuit of power. In a shocking twist, the teen, revealed to be connected to Wanda Maximoff, uses newfound powers against Agatha, resulting in a dramatic confrontation. The episode concludes with Billie Eilish's "You Should See Me In A Crown," leaving viewers eager for more revelations in this intricate tale of witchcraft and legacy.Bonus Info: William Maximoff, known as Billy Kaplan, emerges as a significant character. He's a Wiccan superhero from the Young Avengers, the reincarnate of Wanda and Vision's son, with a twin brother, Tommy, also known as Speed. This adds a compelling layer to the narrative as the connections between family and power unfold.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman and US bureau chief Jacob Magid join host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. US Vice President Kamala Harris just accepted the presidential nomination and she addressed the war in Gaza very directly and clearly in her speech from the podium. Magid reports from Chicago on this and other aspects of Jewish or Israeli interest, including the moving speech by Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, parents of hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, at the Democratic National Convention. Chances for an immediate breakthrough appear increasingly remote even as Israel sends a team headed by Mossad chief David Barnea, and including Maj. Gen. Eliezer Toledano, head of the IDF General Staff Strategy and Third-Circle Directorate. Berman assesses the status of the talks and weighs in on the role the US has played in bringing them to this point. The bodies of the six hostages recovered by the IDF from southern Gaza's Khan Younis this week all have signs of gunshot wounds, according to initial autopsy findings released Thursday. What does it potentially mean that Alex Dancyg, Yagev Buchshtav, Chaim Peri, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, and Avraham Munder were killed by gunfire? Sgt. Ori Ashkenazi Nechemya, 19, was killed during fighting in southern Gaza on Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces announced, as troops pressed on with operations across the Strip. Berman lays out where the fighting is currently, and where it may be going. For news updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Discussed articles include: Israeli negotiators fly to Cairo amid deep disagreements over Philadelphi Corridor Bullet wounds in bodies of all 6 hostages from Gaza suggest they were killed by captors Soldier killed by anti-tank fire in Rafah, as IDF presses on with operations in Gaza Emhoff pledges to continue fighting against antisemitism ‘when I'm first gentleman' Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. After over 200 days, Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin saw proof of life of their son Hersh Goldberg-Polin for the first time, who was severely wounded in the October 7th massacre and taken hostage by Hamas. Just last Wednesday, a video surfaced — which was produced by Hamas — of Hersh speaking to camera. In short, in the video, Hersh describes the he was taken hostage, he criticizes the Israeli Government, and he expresses love for his parents, Jon and Rachel and his two sisters. He addresses his severe wound from October 7th, in which his left hand — his dominant hand — was blown off. When I was in Israel,I visited with Rachel and Jon and we recorded a conversation for this podcast about the video, as well as what else they had learned from it, especially about Hersh's severe wound — he continues to be medically fragile. Jon and Rachel discussed why they decided to approve media release and coverage of the video. Rachel and Jon also reacted to the shocking protests on US campuses — they are both from the US, as is Hersh, and they reflected on what they regarded as some encouraging news about a statement on the hostages, which was signed by 18 countries. They also addressed the possibility of Israeli elections in the midst of this ongoing hostage crisis and war. Two notable court proceedings involving former President Trump, one historic day. Day 7 of the former President's criminal hush money trial saw former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker describing to the court how he paid for Karen McDougal's story to keep her quiet about her alleged affair with Trump, and in Washington DC the Supreme Court heard arguments for and against making any former President immune from criminal prosecution for acts in office. Anderson Cooper in New York, and Kaitlan Collins from Washington DC present CNN's special primetime coverage, breaking down both events. Kaitlan interviews one of the attorneys representing Donald Trump in the immunity case, Will Scharf, who was at today's Supreme Court arguments. Plus, Anderson speaks to Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, whose son Hersh was seen for the first time since the Oct. 7 attacks in a Hamas-released video this week. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 200 of the war with Hamas. Host Jessica Steinberg speaks with Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, parents of hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin in a pre-recorded interview. The couple speaks about the painful realities of marking the holiday of Passover, the holiday of freedom, when their only son is still held captive by terror organization Hamas. Goldberg and Polin discuss their latest trip to the US, which included meetings with members of Congress and the Biden administration, and the hostage deal that was under discussion at the time, and later rejected. Polin views the most recent proposal as Hamas's opportunity to accept the ceasefire and end the suffering of the Gazans. They both speak about the palpable shift in US attitudes, and then the subsequent Iranian attack, when Israel was backed by the global community. Polin discusses that moment as a real opportunity for Israel to say it wouldn't respond until all the hostages come home. For the latest updates, please see The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Our Intergenerational Divergence series is sponsored by our friends Sarala and Danny Turkel. In this special episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we talk to Rachel Goldberg-Polin—whose son, Hersh, was kidnapped by Hamas and is still held hostage in Gaza—about heading into Passover with our loved ones still captive.Normally, Intergenerational Divergence feels like something of a choice. But now, Jewish families have been split apart by force. In this episode we discuss:How do we foster a continued connection to the members of our family who are missing? What difficult thoughts and questions will we bring to the Seder table this year? What does it mean to express hope via the Pesach Seder amid these bitter times? We hope wholeheartedly that this conversation about missing our children at the time of Passover will be made irrelevant and the hostages will soon return home. Interview begins at 7:17.References:“One Tiny Seed” by Rachel Goldberg-Polin“To the Boys in the Room” by Rachel Goldberg-PolinSefer HaMenucha on Mishneh Torah, Leavened and Unleavened Bread 8:2“A Prayer for Israel To Add to Your Pesach Seder” by Yosef Zvi Rimon
The plight of the hostages held in Gaza do not invalidate the suffering of innocent Palestinian civilians amid the ongoing war, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, whose son Hersh is a hostage held by Hamas, told Zvika Klein and Tamar Uriel-Beeri on The Jerusalem Post Podcast.Goldberg-Polin noted that she has been viewed as a symbol to highlight the hostage crisis. She further stressed how the suffering of both the hostages and Gazan civilians are valid.
In the months since October 7, Israel has—for better or for worse—been a regular feature in international news. And while much of the world voices its opposition against (and hatred for) the Jewish state, there are voices who are speaking out for Israel. On this week's podcast, Yael welcomes one of the Holy Land's voices to the world. Eylon Levy has been serving as official Israeli government spokesperson since the beginning of the ongoing war in Gaza. In this role, he has become one of Israel's most recognized faces.Eylon has done this in many ways. As a journalist and news anchor, he can provide the cold, hard facts to the world—showing the truth about Israel and the threats the nation faces in a way that so many media outlets refuse to. One story he shares is that of another podcast guest—Rachel Goldberg, whose son Hersh is still being held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. The job can be difficult—much like life has become harder for all Israelis—but Eylon shares how he keeps his cool in the hardest situations, as well as why he works so hard to share “what Israel is about.”Besides his work as a talking head and giving press conferences, Eylon also excels in the media landscape of the 21st century—as much a new media content creator as he is a government spokesperson. A recent video he shared—his grandmother's hummus recipe—is a perfect example of this.By presenting the truth about Israel—in traditional, as well as new and exciting ways, Eylon Levy is truly a light in the darkness that God's people are facing. You won't want to miss Yael's conversation as he shares both the hard facts of what Israel is facing, as well as the hope he sees for the people of Israel.Listen now.For more information on today's episode visit mybiblicalroots.org.

Eight more Israeli hostages were released from Gaza after a tense and lengthy back-and-forth between Israel and Hamas that extended the truce into a seventh day. The deal is set to expire again tonight unless Hamas offers up a new list of 10 hostages to be released. Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin's 23-year-old son, Hersh, was badly wounded by a grenade on October 7 and taken captive by Hamas. They join AC360 to give an update on their son's chances of being put on a list to be released. Plus, Republican Rep. George Santos refused to resign one day ahead of an expected expulsion vote and claimed he's the one being bullied. A damning House Ethics Committee report found evidence he broke federal laws, stole from his campaign, and delivered a “constant series of lies” to voters and donors on his way to winning a U.S. House seat. Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman tells Anderson Cooper how he thinks the vote will go tomorrow. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Many of you have probably heard, or read about, Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, the parents of 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was kidnapped from the Nova Party. In many ways they've emerged as the face of the hostage families - they've met with Biden and the Pope, they were on the cover of Time Magazine, Rachel has spoken at the UN and at the ‘March for Israel' Rally in Washington D.C. And in all those places, as well as in countless other interviews, speeches and meetings, they've told the heartbreaking tale of the two text messages Hersh sent on the morning of October 7th, one saying “I love you” and the other “I'm sorry.” He wrote those messages from within a shelter, where he was hiding with 28 other partygoers. Eighteen of them were killed, and Hersh - whose left arm was blown off - was badly wounded. Shortly thereafter, Hersh and three others from the shelter were loaded onto Hamas pickup trucks and taken into Gaza. It has now been 55 days. The end song is Tefilat Haderech ("The Traveler's Prayer") by Shai Tsabari. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

CNN's Chief Law Enforcement & Intelligence Analyst John Miller has the latest information. Airdate: November 22, 2023. Guests: Iris Liniado, Rachel Goldberg & Jon Polin, John Miller. Plus, demonstrators from around the country came to Washington, D.C.'s "March for Israel" to denounce antisemitism and demand the release of hostages being held by Hamas. Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, lost his arm from the elbow down in the Hamas attack at the Nova music festival. He was then captured, and authorities say Hamas is currently holding him hostage. His mother, Rachel Goldberg, is praying for his return and telling his story to the media, US senators, and Israeli politicians. She said, “I think when you're in hell, if you stop, then you're really stuck. So when you're going through hell, keep walking—and that's what I'm doing.” The Israeli people have done so since the beginning. And in this hinge point of history, what JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon calls “the most dangerous time the world has seen in decades,” what should we do?
