See www.mckinsey.com/privacy-policy for privacy information

Investing in Israel with Brian Mumbert

Israel is a nation often in the news but seldom for its potential as an investment.Israel is a tiny country but a powerhouse for investing opportunities, particularly in the tech sector. Brian Mumbert joins us today to examine Israel in a different light.Brian Mumbert is Vice President and Regional Sales Executive at Timothy Plan, an underwriter of Faith & Finance. Is It Safe to Invest in Israel?Despite frequent headlines about conflict in the Middle East, Israel stands out as a remarkably resilient nation with an entrepreneurial spirit.Israelis have a low view of debt culturally. In fact, at one point, the government even sent out piggy banks to every citizen to encourage savings and wise stewardship. That mindset—combined with a tech-forward economy—creates strong fundamentals that appeal to values-based investors.Understandably, some investors may wonder about the safety of investing in a country with frequent regional conflict. Israel is regulated just like the U.S. They have their own stock exchange—the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange—and the top 125 companies are listed on the Tel Aviv 125 index.Even during times of war, Israel's economy continues to operate. Brian compared it to the U.S. during World War II: while volatility occurred, the Dow still gained over 50% from 1939 to 1945.A Developed Economy with Room to GrowIsrael graduated from the emerging markets category to a developed economy in 2009. While this was a major step forward, it ironically resulted in less attention from global investors, since many international funds tend to favor larger developed economies like Japan or those in Europe.Still, the fundamentals are strong. Israel's unemployment and inflation rates remain low, and the U.S. continues to be a committed ally.Israel has earned the nickname “Startup Nation” for good reason. Its high-tech sector employs 12% of the workforce and generates 20% of the country's GDP.Many Israeli companies don't become household names because giants like Apple, Google, and Amazon acquire them. Notable examples include:Mobileye—A leader in automotive safety tech.Waze—The crowd-sourced navigation app developed to navigate Jerusalem's winding roads.Cherry Tomatoes—Yes, even innovations in agriculture like drip irrigation and cherry tomatoes can be traced back to Israeli ingenuity. The government's support of tech innovation has made Israel the third-largest tech hub globally by capital raised—just behind Silicon Valley and New York. While tech leads the way, Israel's financial sector is also strong due to the cultural avoidance of debt. This contrasts sharply with many Western nations. Innovations in agriculture (like drip irrigation) and strong export activity also contribute to Israel's economic resilience.Over 50% of Israel's exports are tech-related; major U.S. companies like Apple have invested heavily in Israeli startups, demonstrating the global demand for their innovations.Israel's global relationships are improving, with normalization efforts such as the Abraham Accords expanding diplomatic and trade ties across the Middle East.Venture capital is thriving, too. Israel boasts over 270 active VC funds, and from 2014 to 2018, investment in Israeli startups grew by 140%—more than double the rate in the U.S. during the same period. The Timothy Plan's Israel Common Values FundTimothy Plan offers the Israel Common Values Mutual Fund for those interested in investing in Israel in a biblically responsible way. This fund stands out in several ways:Actively managed—Fund managers respond in real time to geopolitical developments.Focused exposure—At least 80% of companies in the portfolio are domiciled in Israel.Faith-based screening—Just like all Timothy Plan funds, this one avoids investments in companies involved in abortion, pornography, and other areas contrary to Christian values. The fund performed very well last year as the Israeli Stock Exchange closed the year up over 20%, with most of that growth coming in the second half.If you're interested in learning more about investing in Israel and doing so in a way that aligns with your faith, visit TimothyPlan.com.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I just sold my home with $200,000 in profit. Where's the best place to put this money to earn more interest while keeping it ready for my next home purchase in 6-9 months? As a veteran with limited funds, can I set up a Christian investment account to tithe $100 monthly and distribute it to ministry programs after my death?I'm considering buying a rental property for passive income, but I would like to know if it is wiser to meet with a financial advisor and invest in the stock market instead. Greșelile guvernului din programul Start Up Nation

Presa internaţională

Guvernul a anunțat lansarea noului program Start Up Nation.

Around the time his son was born in 2011, Beni Nofech saw a video that changed his life. After listening to an argument about the need to move away from the view that animals are mere commodities for humanity to use however we like, Beni adopted a vegan diet and soon found himself attending animal movement and alt-protein conferences. From there, he began making angel investments in food tech startups that could help animals, eventually leading him to leave his career in the medical device world to become a full-time venture capitalist in the alt-protein food tech world. Today, Beni runs Milk & Honey Ventures, an eight-figure investment fund with a mandate to place early-stage bets on Israeli food tech startups that are seeking to displace animals in the food system. He's backed some of the biggest names in alt-protein, including many companies who've been on this podcast before. In this episode, Beni and I discuss the state of alt-protein investing, whether he views the current apparent malaise as permanent or transitory, and what he sees for the future of this important industry.  I've known Beni since 2016 and can attest that he's a great guy with important insights from which anyone who cares about building a better food system will benefit. Discussed in this episode Beni was influenced to become vegan after seeing this speech online. Beni helped promote this 2016 fundraising video by SuperMeat, to which Paul donated. Beni served on the board of the Modern Agriculture Foundation. Beni recommends: Startup Nation, Clean Meat, Sapiens, and Calvin and Hobbes. This is episode 3 of 6 in a Deep Dive Series on the Housing Innovation Alliance! If you hear any background noise, that's because this episode was recorded LIVE at the HIA Conference 2024 at the University of Denver!  “So if I can summarize what we do, or what we're trying to aspire to do, is make offsite construction so easy a caveman could do it.” In this conversation, Devon Tilly chats with Garrett Moore of Agorus. In football, as in life, the most important person on the field is often the least noticed – the left tackle: he protects the quarterback's blind side.” As a quarterback at Stanford University, this simple lesson laid the early foundation for Garrett's servant-leadership philosophy: “It's the people you work with every day who determine your ability to make an impact”. After achieving a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford, and despite an early desire to jump right into a Silicon Valley start-up after graduation, Garrett's passion to serve led him to San Diego to become an officer in the Navy SEALs. During this time, he was also selected to become an Olmsted Scholar (similar to a Rhodes Scholarship). After learning Hebrew from scratch, he earned his master's degree in Cybersecurity at Tel Aviv University…in Hebrew! Living there in Startup Nation, he learned another critical lesson, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world.” You might see two common denominators in these life shaping experiences – a love of high performing teams and fearlessness in the face of challenges. Garrett and his co-founder Kyle run headlong into the fray when most would hesitate. “If a problem is too hard for everyone else, it's probably just right for us”. And for that reason, he is wholly committed to solving America's elusive housing crisis. Garrett is married to his childhood sweetheart and loves to spend time with his family. It's no surprise that he's also an extreme sports guy, snowboarding, mountain biking and e-foiling whenever he can. By the way, don't ever get suckered into a ping pong game with him. It won't go well for you.  AGORUS LinkedIn AGORUS Instagram AGORUS ONE Build - Tucson, AZ Project Timelapse Keep up with the Art of Construction (AOC) podcast on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Youtube! In a wildly innovative spin, he's set up a 501C3 charity called the Innovation Bridge Foundation, which allows high-net-worth individuals and corporations to make charitable contributions and receive tax deductions. The charity then invests in the for-profit portfolio, Create Israel, which acquires distressed companies and turns them around. 3 Key Takeaways: Innovative Investment Model: Jared introduces a groundbreaking approach that leverages philanthropic donations to acquire and scale distressed tech companies in Israel, providing a low-risk opportunity for donors with significant potential for returns. Strategic Use of Capital: Jared explains how his methodology emphasizes the efficient use of capital and operational control to turn around distressed companies and generate sustainable growth without relying on excessive external funding. Philanthropy Meets Profit: Learn about the dual benefit of Jared's model—where donors receive immediate tax deductions while potentially benefiting from the upside of stabilized tech companies, making it a unique win-win strategy. This morning we discuss Israeli resilience as described by Dan Senor and Saul Singer (co-authors of "Start-Up Nation") in a new essay on Sapir Journal. They portray the humour Israelis expressed as Iranian missiles were streaking toward them. They show how many Israelis build their resilience muscles from a young age where society rewards them for working as a group, and living a life of service. But we must always keep in mind, resilience from what? I share the presentation of our guest speaker at ADATH yesterday, her heartbreaking, heart-numbing experiences on October 7, to more fully grasp the horror, savagery, and shock Israelis experienced that day, in order to grasp the staggering enormity of the resilience they now display. Certains pensent que les entrepreneurs et la Tech ne devraient pas rentrer dans le débat politique. Je ne suis pas de ceux-là. Chapter 1 What's Start-up Nation Book by Dan Senor"Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle" is a book written by Dan Senor and Saul Singer. Published in 2009, the book explores the reasons behind Israel's success in becoming a global hub for technological innovation and entrepreneurship. It delves into the country's history, culture, educational system, military service, government policies, and the role of the Israeli Defense Forces in shaping a vibrant start-up ecosystem. The authors examine how Israel has transformed its challenging geopolitical situation into a competitive advantage by fostering a culture of risk-taking, collaboration, and resilience. "Start-up Nation" is often cited as a source of inspiration and insight for policymakers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders around the world.Chapter 2 Is Start-up Nation Book A Good Book"Start-up Nation" by Dan Senor and Saul Singer is widely regarded as a highly informative and interesting book. It explores the reasons behind Israel's remarkable success in the innovation and entrepreneurship sector, providing insights into the country's culture, history, education, military service, and government policies that influence its thriving start-up ecosystem. Moreover, it offers valuable lessons and inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and policymakers worldwide.Chapter 3 Start-up Nation Book by Dan Senor Summary"Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel's Economic Miracle" is a book written by Dan Senor and Saul Singer. The book explores how Israel, a small country with limited natural resources and surrounded by hostile neighbors, became a global hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. The authors argue that Israel's success as a start-up nation can be attributed to a variety of factors. One key factor is its culture of risk-taking and innovation. Israel has a strong military culture that encourages adaptability, problem-solving, and quick decision-making, which translates well into the business world. The authors also highlight the impact of compulsory military service on fostering a culture of teamwork, leadership, and discipline.Another factor discussed in the book is Israel's investment in research and development. The country spends a significantly higher percentage of its GDP on research and development compared to other nations. This emphasis on R&D has led to the creation of advanced technologies and a highly skilled workforce.Furthermore, the authors examine the role of venture capital in Israel's success. The country has a vibrant ecosystem of angel investors, venture capitalists, and incubators that provide funding and support to start-ups. This ecosystem, combined with a network of high-tech parks and innovation centers, has helped foster entrepreneurship and attract international investment. The book also discusses the role of the Israeli government in promoting innovation. The authors highlight programs such as Yozma, which provided tax incentives and capital to venture capital funds, as well as policies that support entrepreneurship and provide assistance to start-ups.Throughout the book, Senor and Singer provide numerous examples of successful Israeli start-ups and highlight the lessons that can be learned from their experiences. They also examine the challenges and obstacles that start-ups in Israel face, including the security situation and the need to constantly adapt in a rapidly changing global economy.Overall, "Start-up Nation" presents a comprehensive analysis of Israel's economic success and offers insights into how other countries can foster entrepreneurship and innovation. The book has received positive reviews for its engaging storytelling and the wealth of information it provides about...

How has a small nation of 9 million people, forced to fight for its existence and security since its founding and riven by ethnic, religious, and economic divides, proven resistant to so many of the societal ills plaguing other wealthy democracies? Why do Israelis have among the world's highest life expectancies and lowest rates of “deaths of despair” from suicide and substance abuse? Why is Israel's population young and growing while all other wealthy democracies are aging and shrinking? How can it be that Israel, according to a United Nations ranking, is the fourth happiest nation in the world? Why do Israelis tend to look to the future with hope, optimism, and purpose while the rest of the West struggles with an epidemic of loneliness, teen depression, and social decline? The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World (Simon and Schuster, 2023), already on the New York Times' bestseller list, was written by Dan Senor and Saul Singer, the writers behind the international bestseller Start-Up Nation. They have long been students of the global innovation race. But as they spent time with Israel's entrepreneurs and political leaders, soldiers and students, scientists and activists, ultra-Orthodox Jews, Tel Aviv techies, and Israeli Arabs, they realized that they had missed what really sets Israel apart. Moving from military commanders integrating at-risk youth and people who are neurodiverse into national service, to high performing companies making space for working parents, from dreamers and innovators launching a duct-taped spacecraft to the moon, to bringing better health solutions to people around the world, The Genius of Israel tells the story of a diverse people and society built around the values of service, solidarity, and belonging. Widely admired for having the world's highest density of high-tech start-ups, Israel's greatest innovation may not be a technology at all, but Israeli society itself. Understanding how a country facing so many challenges can be among the happiest provides surprising insights into how we can confront the crisis of community, human connectedness, and purpose in modern life. Bold, timely, and insightful, Senor and Singer's latest work shines an important light on the impressive innovative distinctions of Israeli society—and what other communities and countries can learn. Mixergy - Startup Stories with 1000+ entrepreneurs and businesses

I read a plea from Kevin Natanzon on X: Hi @harleyf, PLEASE HELP. I live in Israel ?? And I woke up to MORE BAD NEWS. Can it get any worse? Yes. The main source of our revenue was cut. @ShopifyDevs delisted our app. Why? Because of a simple bug. We have not monitored the app during the past week. You see, I’m a little bit busy burying friends and helping other friends and family go through this fucking hell. Yes, you read that right. Want to help the people in Israel? Expedite this ASAP, the team has already resolved it. I invited Kevin to do an interview about what his startup has been going through since Hamas’ invasion, how his family is rebuilding their kibbutz, and how he’s been growing a startup in Israel, or as he kept referring to it, “Startup Nation.” Kevin Natanzon is the founder of CreatorKit, a platform for ecommerce businesses to create images and videos with AI. On this episode, let's talk about Israel, and the war that has come to this “Startup Nation”. Off the top, let me say the pain and suffering of what's happening is unbelievable, unbearable. My heart goes out to Israel, all Israelis, and all Jews around the world. I also want to say I have spoken with many Arabs since this happened. There's a very big difference between an Arab or a Palestinian and Hamas. They are not the same thing. My Arab friends wanted to stress that to me. My heart goes out to all the innocent Arabs in Gaza and in the region who are suffering and also experiencing extraordinary pain and loss. Israel is a “Startup Nation” If you've been in tech for a while, you've probably worked with Israelis. For the better part of my professional life, I've worked with entrepreneurs, engineers and executives from the country. The Israeli's I know are smart, tough, driven, no-nonsense result producers. If you want to get big tech shit done, work with Israelis. It has one of the highest concentrations of startups in the world. Its tech sector is a major contributor to the country's economy. Tech is 18% of Israel's GDP, and 14% of all salaried employees work in Tech. That's roughly 500,000 people. On top of which, 50% of Israel's total exports come from Technology developed by these people. The framework Israelis created to co-locate Israel/US tech startups, established an innovation model that is envied the world over. Israel has over 6,000 Tech Companies The impact of this war borne out by the Israeli people. Reports indicate that the start if this war was "the darkest day in Jewish history since the end of the Holocaust.” And, it will also be felt by virtually every major tech company in the world. There are over 6,000 tech companies operating in Israel, including some of the largest names, with Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Intel to name a few. These companies have a variety of strategic operations in Israel, including research and development centers, sales offices, and customer support centers. Israel is home to over 15,000 startups, and they employ over 100,000 people. In 2021, Israeli tech companies raised a record $25.6 billion in venture capital funding. Today, they are scrambling to secure and support their people.   15,000 Israeli Tech Startups Now, this evil war is extracting an unbearable human cost. More death, suffering and disruption is sure to follow. And this war will be felt by many of us in the tech industry. My heart aches for Israel. My heart aches for all of the innocent souls in the Middle East. We're praying for peace, and the day we can all get back to building legendary companies. Are you pessimistic about Israel's future? My new book – which I wrote with my "Start-Up Nation" co-author Saul Singer – should give you reason for optimism. I care deeply about Israel. I'm endlessly fascinated by Israel. I travel to Israel regularly. Some may say this is a fraught period for anyone who cares about Israel. But in our new book, "The Genius of Israel: The Surprising Resilience of a Divided Nation in a Turbulent World,” we write about the health and resilience of Israeli society, a topic that could not be more relevant to this period. You can order the book here: https://tinyurl.com/5f8s6sb7 We have a special pre-order campaign for my podcast listeners. If you order the book between now and this Friday at sundown, simply forward any order confirmation to book@dansenor.com, and I'll send you a special chapter sampler that deals with issues debated in Israel – and about Israel – these days. One of the most illuminating characters in our book is Micah Goodman, who has been on our podcast before. Micah is on the speed-dial of a number of Israeli political leaders. He is a polymath, having written books ranging from biblical lessons for the modern age to Israel's geopolitics. His books include: "Catch-67: The Left, the Right, and the Legacy of the Six-Day War" and, more recently, "The Wondering Jew: Israel and the Search for Jewish Identity." Not only have all of his books been bestsellers in Israel, but he essentially created a new genre; books that bring core texts of Jewish thought to a general, secular audience. Micah also hosts the most downloaded podcast in Israel. In this episode, Micah and I focus on what effects a Saudi-Israel normalization deal could be on Israel's domestic political crisis. Might MBS help restore some normalcy to Israeli politics? And we have a special pre-order campaign for my podcast listeners.
