In this podcast, Jacob Stewart, director of state government relations at the Early Care and Education Consortium, describes what individual states are doing to combat staffing shortages in child care. Massachusetts, for example, launched a general, statewide workforce bonus for which child care providers are eligible to receive $4,000 per new employee hired and retained for 60 days. Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania have offered multiple bonuses ranging between $300 and $1,200 per worker. Other states are offering wage enhancements, internship programs, a refundable tax credit, financial support to obtain credentials that are state required as well as enabling employees to leverage their experience to move up career ladders and more! These findings are part of a data-packed report his organization recently put out titled "The Child Care Workforce Shortage: Solutions from Around the Country." As of February 2022, two-thirds of providers reported a staffing shortage that affected their ability to serve families; of those, 52% were forced to serve fewer children while 37% had a longer waiting list, according to the report.Read the full report here! Listen as Jacob delves into the findings of this report ... and he describes negotiations that are happening for legislation that could help the child care industry despite the demise of the Build Back Better plan.

Born into a military family, Wendy Stewart has lived across the globe but chose to settle down in Rock county to live and raise a family. She has been a resident of Rock county for 20 years and is involved in the community, attending local events like the Dairy Breakfast and the Rock county fair every year. She is passionate about veterans issues and has helped organize as well as participated in events around the community to benefit veterans. Last June, Wendy applied to be considered for the position of Rock County Clerk. Although being highly qualified and placing 2nd on the list of possible candidates, an understandably more qualified candidate with several years of clerk experience was appointed to that position. This did not deter Wendy and she became even more determined to become involved in her community through public service. This led to her decision to run for Rock County Treasurer.Wendy Stewart's educational background is highly suited for the Treasurer's office. She holds a double major from UW-Madison in mathematics and economics, and is currently attending UW-Whitewater to qualify to sit for the CPA exam. Her current and previous employment history includes logistics and inventory control analysis, cost analysis, and regulatory compliance in the food industry. Wendy is the mother of two children, Grace Stewart (20) and Jacob Stewart (14). Grace is attending UW-Madison and is a former Cullen intern, and Jacob will start high school at Parker in the fall. She is quite proud of both her children and their accomplishments. Wendy is a fiscal conservative and applies that to her lifestyle by doing her own car and home repairs as a hobby.
