Today we can see the relics of those ancient creatures in the flashy blue lizard of Capri, gladiator crabs under the forum in Rome, the crested porcupine, the beautiful Apennine chamois and of course the Marzipan brown bear and Italian grey wolf, not forgetting its flora, including the world's rarest Christmas tree in Sicily. Dithmarschen, Friesland und die Kunst der Abgrenzung Wer schon mal versucht hat, in Norddeutschland die geografischen und kulturellen Grenzen zwischen Dithmarschen, Nordfriesland, Ostfriesland und dem restlichen Friesland zu erklären, weiß: Das ist ein Unterfangen, das selbst Einheimische stutzen lässt. Die Ditmarscher – stolz und eigenwillig – beharren darauf, keine Friesen zu sein, während die Friesen ihrerseits Ditmarschen fast als Teil ihrer Region empfinden. Brauchtum: Wenn Traditionen lebendig werden Ob Vatertagsumzüge im Emsland oder das Boßeln in Dithmarschen: Brauchtum ist in Norddeutschland mehr als nur Folklore. Es ist ein Lebensgefühl, das Generationen verbindet. Doch während solche Traditionen auf dem Land noch hochgehalten werden, wirken sie in der Stadt oft befremdlich. Warum? Weil Brauchtum Authentizität und Gemeinschaft braucht, um zu funktionieren. Und die findet man am ehesten dort, wo die Menschen noch miteinander leben. Kulinarische Traditionen: Marzipan, Brot ohne Salz und die Geschichten dahinter Eine weitere norddeutsche Tradition ist Marzipan aus Lübeck; und es ist weltberühmt – doch wer glaubt schon, dass es aus einer Kriegs- und Krisenzeit stammt? Ähnlich verhält es sich mit dem salzfreien Brot aus Florenz, das heute noch als kulinarische Kuriosität gilt. Beide Produkte sind demnach Zeugnisse von Kreativität und Anpassungsfähigkeit in schwierigen Zeiten und zudem identitätsstiftend. Und sie zeigen: Europa ist nicht nur eine politische Union, sondern auch ein kulinarisches Abenteuer. Europäische Identität: Was hält uns zusammen? Was bedeutet es eigentlich, Europäer zu sein? Ist es die Geografie, die Geschichte, die Kultur – oder vielleicht einfach die Haltung? Die Diskussion über den Homo Europaeicus zeigt, wie schnell solche Begriffe in pseudowissenschaftliche und rassistische Narrative abgleiten können. Dabei geht es doch eigentlich um etwas ganz anderes: um die Vielfalt, die uns ausmacht – und die Gemeinsamkeiten, die uns verbinden. Experiment Zero – The Peace Experiments: Ch 2 - The Council Meeting of Unwanted Attendance Kitty O'Compost arrives at a so-called informational meeting in the Old Gym, where folding chairs, fluorescent lights, and carefully chosen language are meant to keep the public at a comfortable distance. Joined by Marzipan and an unexpected student attendee, Kitty listens as officials explain a new facility using jargon that seems designed to obscure more than it reveals. As terms slip, silences stretch, and a forbidden idea briefly surfaces, the meeting exposes a quiet tension between governance and participation, secrecy and shared responsibility. What was meant to reassure instead sharpens Kitty's sense that something important is being managed out of sight—and that certain concepts unsettle authority simply by being named. Als Teddy aufwacht, riecht die Welt nach Zimt und Abenteuer. Auf dem Küchentisch liegt ein Zettel von Esel: „Bin kurz weg. Muss was probieren. Folge der Spur der Gewürze. Esel“ Teddy seufzt, nimmt seinen kleinen Rucksack und macht sich auf den Weg. Seine Reise beginnt in Genf. Am Seeufer sitzt ein alter Mann mit einem Stand voller seltsamer Pülverchen. „Hast du einen Esel gesehen?“, fragt Teddy. Der Mann schüttelt den Kopf. „Er war hier. Hat nach Mahleb gefragt und ist weiter nach Gerardsbergen.“ Teddy kauft eine Prise Mahleb, die nach Marzipan und Kirschen duftet, und rennt zum Zug. In Gerardsbergen riecht es nach Regen und Pommes. Auf den Treppen einer alten Kirche findet er eine Kritzelei an der Wand: „Zu wenig Bass. Zu wenig Schärfe. Weiter nach Urfa!“ Daneben klebt ein kleiner Papierteebeutel, darin: Urfa-Biber, dunkle, fermentierte Chili. Teddy niest. „Esel, du Nase.“ Der nächste Flug bringt ihn in die Türkei. In einem Markt in der Nähe von Şanlıurfa streicht eine Händlerin ihm über den Kopf. „Ein Esel war hier. Er hat nach einem Gewürz gefragt, das klingt wie ein Planet. Kalonji. Dann ist er weiter nach Geo Chang in Südkorea.“ Teddy schnauft. „Der reist ja wie eine Boyband auf Tour.“ In Geo Chang stapft Teddy durch Nebel und Neonlicht. An einer Straßenküche serviert ihm jemand Suppe. Oben drauf schwimmt etwas, das nach geröstetem Pfeffer und Erde riecht. „Ajowan“, erklärt der Koch. „Esel wollte nur probieren. Er meinte, sein Freund Teddy würde das mögen. Dann sprach er von Gitega, Hauptstadt von Burundi.“ Also fliegt Teddy nach Afrika. In Gitega ist die Luft warm und staubig. Auf einem kleinen Markt findet er einen Stand mit gläsernen Schraubgläsern. Ein Junge zeigt ihm eines mit winzigen Samen. „Raduni. Wie Selleriesamen. Der Esel hat gesagt, du wirst dir den Namen nie merken.“ „Wird er schon sehen“, murmelt Teddy und steckt das Glas ein. Die Spur führt weiter nach Geita in Tansania, dann nach Geumsan in Korea, wo alles nach Ginseng riecht. Überall dieselbe Geschichte: „Ja, Esel war hier. Hat gefragt, ob schon ein Teddy vorbeigekommen ist. Er hat's eilig.“ Teddy nicht. Er ist müde, aber jedes neue Gewürz lässt ihn weiterlaufen: Anardana aus Granatapfelkernen in Indien, Zedoar und Galgant, die scharf nach Ingwer und Wald schmecken. In Georgien stolpert er über Ajika, eine feurige Mischung, in Spanien über rotes Pimentón, in Tunesien über Tabil, in Japan über zitronig-prickelnden Sancho. Ganz am Ende sitzt Teddy in einem kleinen Zimmer in Geleen in Holland. Vor ihm auf dem Tisch: ein chaotischer Kreis aus Tütchen und Gläsern – Mahleb, Urfa-Biber, Kalonji, Ajowan, Raduni, Anardana, Zedoar, Galgant, Ajika, Pimentón, Amchur, Sancho, Tabil, ein Schälchen Zaatar. Die ganze Reise als Duft-Weltkarte. Die Tür geht auf. Esel steckt den Kopf hinein. „Na, du riechst ja wie ein ganzes Kochbuch.“ Teddy sieht ihn an, erst wütend, dann lachend. „Du warst immer nur ein Gewürz weiter?“ Esel setzt sich, nimmt eine Prise Zaatar und streut sie auf ein Stück Brot. „Ich wollte, dass du mich suchst.“ „Warum?“ „Weil man Freundschaft manchmal erst richtig schmeckt, wenn man einmal um die Welt gelaufen ist.“ Teddy überlegt kurz, beißt in das Brot und nickt. „Beim nächsten Mal“, sagt er, „suchst du mich.“ „Abgemacht“, grinst Esel.

Volle Ladung Glücksgefühle! Bei Maike und Ingo setzt vorweihnachtliches Kribbeln ein, als sie Lübeck entdecken – diesmal nicht rundherum, sondern mittenmang durch die UNESCO-Altstadt. Maike muss aufpassen, dass die verführerische Mandelmasse nicht komplett in Ingos Magen verschwindet. Was dieser nicht ahnt: Ein Mü Lübecker Marzipan … fertig ist das Aphrodisiakum!
