Six years on from his previous appearance on The Tennis Podcast, Janko Tipsarevic is back, this time to talk to David all about his foray into coaching. Tipsarevic doesn't hold back as he explains why he enjoys coaching and why he thinks coaching standards in tennis are generally lower compared to in other sports. David was inspired to speak to Tipsarevic again after his new partnership with Denis Shapovalov has got off to a promising start, with Shapovalov winning the ATP 500 event in Dallas last month. Tipsarevic explains why he was drawn to working with Shapovalov, the goals that they have set together, and how he think Shapovalov needs to play to achieve his potential. He also gives his take on the Novak Djokovic - Andy Murray coaching relationship. Catherine Whitaker and David Law begin this week’s show by discussing the aftermath of Justin Gimelstob’s decision to finally stand down from his roles on the ATP board and with Tennis Channel. Will this be used as an opportunity to change the culture of men’s tennis? Who are some of the candidates to replace Gimelstob? Did Stan Wawrinka do the right thing by publishing a powerful letter condemning Gimelstob and the actions of the ATP board? And why were Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all so reluctant to express similar feelings? Turning to actual tennis results, there’s a look at Jo Konta’s improved clay court form, the rise of Cristian Garin, titles for Greek duo Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari, and Pablo Cuevas’ new penchant for trick shots. All the major storylines from the first few days of Madrid are also covered, including Roger Federer’s return to clay, Sloane Stephens’ new partnership with Sven Groeneveld, and Felix Auger-Aliassime’s win over Denis Shapovalov. Finally, Catherine gets a chance to take stock of Janko Tipsarevic’s Tennis Podcast interview with David, which was released on April 11th. On Episode 67 of The Tennis Files Podcast, I spoke with Leon Vessels about how he became a practice partner for top ATP and WTA pros. Leon has practiced with Alexander Zverev, Kei Nishikori, Grigor Dmitrov, Eugenie Bouchard, Gael Monfils, John Isner, Janko Tipsarevic, Alexandr Dolgopolov, Rajeev Ram, and countless other top ranked players. I noticed Leon playing with these top players at the Citi Open while covering the tournament over the past few years, and was intrigued about his story. What is particularly amazing about Leon is that although he was a top junior, he did not play college tennis or on the pro tour, took several years off the game, and yet still possesses the skills and focus to practice with the top players in the world. On the podcast we get into how Leon became a practice partner at the Citi Open, how others can become practice partners at tournaments, the level required to practice with the pros, tips he's learned from the best in the world, and much more. It was a pleasure speaking with Leon on the podcast, and I know you'll really enjoy this episode about Leon's journey to becoming a practice partner with these players. I know we'd all love to be in Leon's shoes. Heck, I think becoming a practice partner for the pros is one of my next goals :) Let us know what you think about this episode in the comments below!
