The stats keep coming on Lulu Sun's advance into the second round of Wimbledon by beating eighth seed Qinwen Zheng in three sets. The victory is the first in a grand slam main draw by a New Zealand woman since Marina Erakovic made the third round on grass in 2016. The win also marks the first over a top 10 player by one of her compatriots since Erakovic beat Victoria Azarenka in 2011. Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave explains further. Who doesn't love a bonus Humpday (and Valentine's Day!) treat? Since we can't cuddle up with Grigor Dimitrov, we decided to drop a bonus episode. The Australian Open account shared an interview with Sloane Stephens, and per usual, Sloane crushed it. In it, she hilariously talks about winning another slam, her old beef with Victoria Azarenka (!) and much more. You can watch the video here. We recap the video and then remind everyone about how dramatic, iconic and ridiculous the 2013 Australian Open was for the ladies. Enjoy this short bonus episode from us! Hosted on Acast. The quarter-final line-ups are set and the two draws could scarcely be more different. In the women's draw, the top half became an even bigger land of opportunity as Victoria Azarenka was beaten by Dayana Yastremska, and Elina Svitolina had to retire against Linda Noskova. On the pod, David reveals his best Noskova anecdote, and we also discuss how Zheng Qinwen might handle the pressure of being the favourite to reach the final. Meanwhile in the men's draw, Carlos Alcaraz dazzled on court but couldn't name a woman, Alexander Zverev won his second fifth set tiebreak of the event against the new and improved Cameron Norrie, and Daniil Medvedev put on a return of serve masterclass in a fantastic on court interview with Jim Courier. VOTE FOR US, because time is running out to help us win best tennis podcast at the Sports Podcast Awards: https://www.sportspodcastgroup.com/sports_category/best-tennis-podcast/ ** Tonight, James is joined by Eleanor Crooks of the Press Association to talk through the day's play. Here are the highlights. ** Australian Open, Day 3 Jack Draper required five sets to beat Marcos Giron, needed his blood pressure checked mid-match and had to seek out a courtside bin to throw up immediately after sealing victory. "I kind of felt bad because I obviously just beat the guy, and I was saying, 'I need to shake your hand, mate, but I need to get to that bin'," Draper said. Iga Swiatek came through an opening test of fire in her hunt for a first Australian Open title on Tuesday. Poland's world number one Swiatek had been handed a stern opening draw in hot and blustery conditions that made things difficult for players across the grounds. But the four-time Grand Slam champion responded in style and twice fought back from a break down to win 7-6(2) 6-2. "It wasn't the easiest first round," said Swiatek, who is now on a 17-match winning run after triumphs in Beijing and the WTA Finals last year as well as her United Cup heroics where she won five successive singles matches. "I felt off in terms of the timing. For sure the temperature was higher than any match I've played here and I needed to adjust as the balls were flying in these conditions." Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz wrapped up the third day's play with an entertaining victory over French veteran Richard Gasquet on Tuesday. Alcaraz was spared the worst of the heat as he made his return to the tournament after missing it last year. Concluding a balmy night session on Rod Laver Arena against a man who won his first ATP tour match a year before he was even born, the 20-year-old Alcaraz won 7-6(5) 6-1 6-2. The young Spaniard, wearing a sleeveless vest top, was given a run for his money by 131-ranked Gasquet who produced some signature backhand winners to get within two points of taking the opening set in the tiebreak. But Alcaraz responded to reel off three successive points and once he had the first set in his pocket he cruised. "I didn't have good run the years that I played here but I felt really well today," Alcaraz, who is making his third appearance at the year's opening Grand Slam, told American former great John McEnroe on court. "I struggled a bit in the first set and Richard was playing great but in the end I think I played quite a good level." He will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego in round two. And former US Open champion Emma Raducanu made an encouraging return to the Grand Slam stage after surgery as she outplayed American Shelby Rogers for a 6-3 6-2 win. Double Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka was made to work hard by Italian Camila Giorgi before the 18th seed from Belarus prevailed 6-1 4-6 6-3. Learn more about your ad choices. This week we are joined by 2x Grand Slam champion and former world number one, Victoria Azarenka. Born in Belarus, during the final years of the Soviet Union, Victoria's career in tennis started purely by chance. After moving to the USA as a teenager to pursue her dream she would go on to become the first Belarusian to capture a tennis Grand Slam, winning the Australian Open in 2012.But now she has found herself in the middle of tensions, as the sporting and political worlds collide…Subscribe for future episodes and head to www.youtube.com/@UpFrontWithSimonJordan for full video episodes.18+ please gamble responsibly.Warning: this episode contains language that some people may find offensive.
It was a day of high drama in the women's draw so Catherine, David and Matt begin by talking about the simultaneous epics that played out on Centre Court. How did Elina Svitolina come back to defeat Victoria Azarenka for the first time? How has she changed as a tennis player since coming back to the tour? What made this one of the best moments of Svitolina's life? What can tennis do about the booing that keeps happening when there's no handshake? And how did Iga Swiatek save match points to beat Belinda Bencic?Elsewhere, there's chat about Marketa Vondrousova's win in the Czech-off, Mirra Andreeva's growth since Roland Garros, Jessica Pegula reaching another Grand Slam quarter-final, a stunning shot by Andrey Rublev to help him beat Alexander Bublik, a despondent Frances Tiafoe after his loss to Grigor Dimitrov, injury for Denis Shapovalov, a choke by Hubert Hurkacz in two tiebreaks against Novak Djokovic, and scheduling issues on Centre Court. As summer is in full bloom, we can't say the same about the sports world, but you know I'm more than capable to keep you abreast of what's gone on as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (3:31) After a few words about how the sports landscape is a little barren as we approach the middle of July, baseball has come to its All-Star Break as the Home Run Derby will take place tonight, followed by the Midsummer Classic tomorrow night in Seattle. Does the actual Derby generate more buzz and attention that the All-Star Game itself? I'll share a little synergy with the past two prior games that were played in the Pacific Northwest. As the 'first half' concludes, I'll discuss the big series that took place over the weekend (i.e. Braves-Rays, Orioles-Twins, Cubs-Yankees, Mariners-Astros, Reds-Brewers, Mets-Padres, Dodgers-Angels) NOTE: I failed to mention Phillies-Marlins. My error and apologies there. Have no fear. You can get my analysis of that series on my YouTube channel @JAYREELZ. I'll also talk about the top two picks of the MLB Draft as history was made between two teammates (LSU's Paul Skenes & Dylan Crews) drafted 1-2 respectively. (32:07) The NBA has announced their in-season tournament on Saturday night, where it'll culminate in an NBA Cup come December 7th in Las Vegas. Is this a gimmick? Too early to tell? I'll talk about Gregg Popovich's extension with the Spurs, his player Victor Wembanyama has been in the news for a rough outing Friday night, a bounce back performance on Saturday and a brief encounter with Britney Spears, which was much ado about nothing. (41:38) A big trade took place in the NHL over the weekend as former Ottawa Senator Alex DeBrincat was shipped to Detroit for players and picks. Longtime LA King forward, Anze Kopitar re-up for three more years as he'll likely end his career with the only team he played for. (42:50) Some controversy has surfaced at Wimbledon as the fans booed Victoria Azarenka after losing to Elena Svitolina after their match yesterday. Was it warranted? Was it unfair? Plus, a very disappointing defeat to Francis Tiafoe getting served in three quick sets. And the Carlos Alcaraz-Novak Djokovic finals match up is still in tact as we're into the second week of the tournament, hoping that we'll see both players go at it for a Grand Slam title. Friday was the day Wimbledon got back on track, with late night wins for Novak Djokovic and Marie Bouzkova ensuring that the schedule will now neatly return to having different halves of the draw on different days. Tuesday at Roland Garros was a lot: Gael Monfils somehow came back from 0-4 down in the final set while cramping, Rome champion Daniil Medvedev was beaten by Thiago Seyboth Wild in five dramatic sets, and Bianca Andreescu came surging back to defeat Victoria Azarenka in a thriller. Catherine, David and Matt cover all of that, as well as the domestic violence charge facing Seyboth Wild, wins for Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur, and a first round loss for Barbora Krejcikova. It was a thrilling finals weekend in Madrid with Aryna Sabalenka getting revenge on Iga Swiatek before Carlos Alcaraz survived a great performance by Jan-Lennard Struff to defend his title. Catherine is back home and she joins David and Matt to review it all. Is Sabalenka-Swiatek now a legitimate rivalry? Will Sabalenka be able to take this form to Rome and Roland Garros? And did Struff provide a blueprint for facing Alcaraz?Sadly, the great tennis was somewhat overshadowed by the fact that the women's doubles finalists - Victoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Jessica Pegula & Coco Gauff - were not allowed to give speeches on court. What happened? Why did it happen? What might it have to do with #cakegate? Why have the tournament not put out an official explanation? And in what way did this incident feed into the idea that the WTA players don't receive equal treatment in Madrid? Elsewhere, we cover Andy Murray winning a Challenger title in Aix-en-Provence, Rafael Nadal withdrawing from Rome, and Veronika Kudermetova's sponsorship with one of Russia's gas and oil giants. Get ready for power in the women's final on Saturday after Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka set up what promises to be a fearsome showdown on Saturday. How did Rybakina win the first set against Victoria Azarenka despite her first serve going missing? Just how impressive was Sabalenka to overcome her Grand Slam semi-final scar tissue? And how will they match up against each other in the final? Elsewhere, with tennis crossing over into geopolitics in the last 24 hours, after Novak Djokovic's father was filmed posing for photos with Vladimir Putin supporters, Simon Briggs joins Catherine, David and Matt to talk about what Djokovic's response might be and whether players have a responsibility to denounce those scenes. Finally, there's good news for the Australian sensations in doubles, we look ahead to Friday's men's semi-finals, and we celebrate the Original 9 after they were honoured on Thursday. *WIN A 3-NIGHT STAY AT THE MIAMI OPEN!*On Location, our Australian Open sponsor, has given us one of Steve Furgal's International Tennis Tours packages to the Miami Open presented by Itau, in March to give away to one lucky Tennis Podcast Newsletter subscriber! It's conference championship weekend and the odds have never been tighter with all four remaining teams all within a (slightly weighted) coinflips chance of making it to the Super Bowl. How will Patrick Mahomes' ankle injury impact the Chiefs' offense and what would the difference in odds be for a Chiefs team with Mahomes out, limited, or at 100%? The NFC has come down to the two best-rated teams in the conference and likely the two best coaches. What will separate these teams on Sunday and who will blink first? Can the 49ers limit Hurts' explosive playmaking and can Purdy avoid turnovers in a game likely to be decided by a razor-thin margin? And in Australia, the first major of the year is underway and Patrick and Seth take a look at a resurgent Victoria Azarenka and just who might be able to stand up to Djokovic.
It wasn't a vintage day at the Australian Open with three straight sets matches and one retirement, but there was a vintage performance by Victoria Azarenka as she beat Jessica Pegula 6-4 6-1 to reach the semi-finals in Melbourne for the first time since her title run in 2013. Catherine, David and Matt talk all about that, as well as her extraordinary press conference in which she opened up about the fears and anxiety she experienced last year. There's also our take on what went wrong for Jessica Pegula and where it leaves her, and another fearsome display by Elena Rybakina. Is she now the favourite for the title? On the men's side, there's chat about the scintillating form of Stefanos Tsitsipas and how Karen Khachanov has quietly turned himself into a Grand Slam specialist.*WIN A 3-NIGHT STAY AT THE MIAMI OPEN!*On Location, our Australian Open sponsor, has given us one of Steve Furgal's International Tennis Tours packages to the Miami Open presented by Itau, in March to give away to one lucky Tennis Podcast Newsletter subscriber! Former Tennis player turned broadcaster Cliff Drysdale is this week's guest. Drysdale was a highly ranked professional player in the 1960s and early 1970s. Then, when ESPN started in 1979, Drysdale became a tennis announcer. He evolved into a strong play-by-play announcer and has been with the network since its inception. In 2013, he was elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. In this episode, Drysdale talks about his transition to the booth from the court. He also discussed what ESPN was like when it was from a fledgling startup to the juggernaut it has become. He also discussed some of the mechanics of tennis and weighs in on the debate of 2 out of 3 vs. 3 out of 5 sets being more entertaining. He also discussed some key players on the tour including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Iga Swiatek, Naomi Osaka, Ash Barty, Nick Kyrgios, Victoria Azarenka, and many more.
