The Tennis Tragic #064 / Goran's Knee / Must we suffer for our art? Have we been coddled, and can we triumph in spite of our soft hearts? The great ship Wimbledon finds itself mid-stream. Matt finds the random button, and we all discover August Holmgren as a result. Players get more serious about the Upset Game. Marin Cilic pauses and we flashback to the Match That Time Forgot. Arthur Rinderknech stops the darkness, while Laura Siegemund practices the dark arts. A fishing trip organized by Craig Boynton is described. Goran Ivanisevic dishes out some tough love (on one leg). Trinity Rodman gazes lovingly at Ben Shelton. Matte and David consider a lateral career move and re-imagine the Tennis Tragic as a Tennis Podcast Podcast.
Century up! Wimbledon Day 6 is in the books — join Kim and Chris as they reflect on another milestone day for Novak Djokovic, who glided into the fourth round and notched his 100th match win at Wimbledon on Centre Court. Jannik Sinner also enjoyed a comfortable win, cruising past an injured Pedro Martinez, while Marin Cilic continued his strong grass-court form. Grigor Dimitrov reached his own milestone with his 100th Grand Slam match win, and the ever-consistent Alex De Minaur booked yet another second-week Slam appearance - he's now reached the last 16 in 7 of the last 8 Slams. It was a dramatic day on the women's side too, sparking debate among the team: is Iga Swiatek now the favourite from the bottom half of the draw to reach the final? And what's with all the pasta and strawberries? There were tears as defending champion Barbora Krejcikova fell to Emma Navarro, guaranteeing an eighth consecutive new women's champion at Wimbledon. Why is it so hard to defend the women's title? The team weighs in. Meanwhile, hot favourite Elena Rybakina was also sent packing by Clara Tauson, seemingly unsettled by her No. 2 Court assignment. Should she have been on Centre or No. 1 Court — and should it have made a difference? Whilst teen sensation Mirra Andreeva breezed through to R4 to get the team thinking just how influential it is to have a previous champion in Conchita Martinez by your side.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. We were live after close of play on a busy day 4 at the Championships. In part 1 we discuss Draper's shock loss to former finalist here Marin Cilic. What does this mean for both of them? How can Draper still improve both on grass and at Wimbledon? And Can Cilic go even further? We also cover Novak Djokovic and Jannik cruising through, as well as an intriguing epic between August Holmgren and Tomas Machac which was notable not only for four tie-break sets out of five, but also some unexpected clothing-rule-related-drama. In part 2 (43m05s) we wrapped up the women's results. Mirra Andreeva held firm despite being tested by Lucia Bronzetti, and defending champion Krejcikova slipped past Dolehide to set up a match with Emma Navarro. Swiatek too made it through; we discuss how her confidence is holding up as she progresses through the draw. And another former champion, Elena Rybakina, is looking strong, swatting away Sakkari with the kind of skills we wish we could employ to dispatch the insects currently plaguing our podcast bench! In part 3 (57m49s) we run through tomorrow's order of play, consider how Alcaraz might fare against Struff, preview Sabalenka-Raducanu, and come to the conclusion that tomorrow, Court 2 is where it's at in terms of excitement, as Fonseca takes on Jarry and Keys plays Siegemund.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Ben is joined once more by Ricky Dimon to catch up on the further upsets in the second round of Wimbledon after the carnage in the opening round, and to set up third round clashes. We start with Jack Draper, the local hope who was bundled out by 2017 runner-up Marin Cilic. We then wrap up the rest of the men, including exits for Americans Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul, and look for what could be in store the rest of the way if upsets subside. We then turn to the women, who lost last year's finalist Jasmine Paolini, but who have a few real tasty third rounds now on the cards, including Sabalenka-Raducanu, Andreeva-Baptiste, and Krejcikova-Navarro. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Ricky's writing at TennGrand!

Day 4 of Wimbledon 2025 delivered high drama, standout performances and a deflating day for the Brits. Jack Draper lost out to veteran Marin Cilic who rolled back the years and reminded us just why he is a Grand Slam champion and a former Wimbledon finalist. It leaves Jack Draper once again coming unstuck against a 10/10 opponent and not quite living up to the hype at Majors which the gang discuss. Novak Djokovic also showed no signs of slowing down as he defeated Britain's Dan Evans convincingly, exacting revenge on that Monte Carlo reverse in 2021. Does he look the best he has done in his quest for Grand Slam 25? Quite possibly. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner also cruised past Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets. In the women's draw, Iga Swiatek (and resident Wimbledon towel thief) staged a strong comeback against Caty McNally, and defending champion Barbora Krejcikova advanced after a tough battle with Caroline Dolehide. Elena Rybakina and rising star Mirra Andreeva also booked spots in the third round with Joel assessing the teen queen's chances on grass after she stated earlier in the year that the surface is her least favourite. We also look ahead to the epic showdown of Sabalenka vs. Raducanu and wonder just how much can the British crowd try and get into the Belarusian's head as the third round kicks off.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Tennis: Kei Nishikori Beats Marin Cilic in Singles 1st Round at Japan Open
Mark Petchey kicks off this episode with his analysis of the Laver Cup, where he witnessed Team Europe reclaim the trophy in Berlin. Petchey assesses why the event remains one of the best spectacles on the tennis calendar, how it amplifies the doubles game, and why it's another example of how everything Roger Federer touches turns to gold. The commentator also disscusses the current happenings in the "Asian Swing" section of the season, with Marin Cilic & Jerry Shang claiming trophies, and an enormous combined event with many of the game's stars kicking off in Beijing. And then Magnus Norman, one of the game's premier coaches of the 21st century joins the podcast for conversation about his life in tennis. Norman looks back at his playing career, which saw him reach a major final and #2 in the rankings before it was cut short by injuries. He explains why he chose to become a coach, working with Thomas Johnassen, Robin Soderling and Stan Wawrinka. The Swede recalls Soderling's historic win over Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, and how he worked with Wawrinka to find that killer instinct that propelled him to three major titles. And Norman reveals why he decided to found the "Good To Great Tennis Academy," the first of it's kind in Sweden. Rounding out the show is Joel Drucker, a prominent writer with decades of experience covering the sport around the globe. Drucker discusses the generational shift at the top of the sport, and why there are always ebbs and flows in the pro game. The writer also examines the state of team events with the Davis & Laver Cups at center stage, and analyzes the pros and cons of mid-match coaching. Drucker is a member of the USTA Northern California Hall of Fame, and on the eve of that honor he professes why writing about tennis is the best job in the world. Hosted by Mitch Michals. FELIX AUGER-ALIASSIME ON HIS HOPES OF QUALIFYING FOR TURIN - ‘For the last two years it's been a clear goal that I want to be in Turin. Last year I was close and this year I have real chances, I'm in the race right now but a lot of things can happen until Turin. I don't think about it day-to-day, but once we get to the last tournaments of the year it's always the talk of the week as the last players are pushing to squeeze in their ticket to Turin'.HOLGER RUNE ON A POTENTIAL RIVALRY WITH CARLOS ALCARAZ - ‘I'm excited, hopefully it's going to be like Roger and Rafa, it could be great, that's what we're seeking for to be the greatest players of all time and to be the greatest players we can be and for my side I'm just trying to fulfil my potential and be as great as I can be everyday and be one percent better every time I step on the practice court'.DENIS SHAPOVALOV ON THE NEED TO HANDLE BIG MOMENTS WITH EXCITEMENT, RATHER THAN FEAR - ‘I think it comes with experience. When you're coming up there's more things to fear like you don't belong or feel like you won't make it, but obviously I feel like I've got a great level with my game and that any moment I can pick it up and play some great tennis'. COACH JOSEPH GILBERT ON JENSON BROOKSBY'S DESIRE TO REACH THE TOP - ‘It was not about building a weapon, it was more about not having weaknesses. We couldn't build him as a typical American player and I think a lot of people have seen that, he wasn't the biggest, fastest, strongest growing up and throughout his career people have not believed he can go to the next level which I think has only fuelled his competitiveness'.ALEXANDER BUBLIK ON PLAYING AT HOME IN KAZAKHSTAN - ‘Every time being here it's a great adventure, great city which has been my home for the past seven years and this is big for me, seeing all these kids and seeing my picture all over the town and you know, spending so much time doing autographs, spending three hours a day signing things on the streets and I'm really enjoying that I have a certain impact on the country'.PLUS MARIN CILIC TAKES QUIZ QUESTIONS ON HIS OWN CAREER AND DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN TALKS US THROUGH THE ITEMS HE TRAVELS WITH- Programme presented by Seb Lauzier- Interviews by Mike Cation, Seb Lauzier, Jill Craybas and Ursin Caderas- Jenson Brooksby, Marin Cilic and Diego Schwartzman features by ATP Uncovered

Erik Jones became the first non-playoff driver to win NASCAR’s opening playoff race. Several top seeds expected to compete like Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch were out of contention at the end. Elliott was the top playoff seed and hit the wall early. Harvick’s car caught fire and he went from ninth in points to 16th on the brink of elimination. Defending series champ Larson was several laps down before finishing 12th. NCAA – Big Ten votes to add USC, UCLA as members starting in 2024 The Big Ten voted unanimously to add Southern California and UCLA as conference members beginning in 2024. The expansion to 16 teams will happen after the Pac-12’s current media rights contracts with Fox and ESPN expire and make the Big Ten the first conference to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The announced came almost a year after Oklahoma and Texas formally accepted invitations to join the Southeastern Conference in July 2025. NHL – Red Wings hire Lightning assistant Derek Lalonde as coach The Detroit Red Wings have hired two-time Stanley Cup-winning assistant Derek Lalonde as coach after a lengthy search process. Lalonde was on Jon Cooper’s Tampa Bay Lightning staff the past four years in which they won the Cup twice and most recently reached the final. Lalonde is now in charge of a team in Detroit on the upswing of a long-term rebuild. Lalonde is the first active Cooper assistant to take a head coaching job in the NHL. He replaces Jeff Blashill who coached the Red Wings for seven seasons. Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman hired Lalonde when Yzerman held the same position as GM of Tampa Bay. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission voted Thursday to reclassify a terminal at the Port of Oakland as a mixed-use area where a new ballpark could be built. The vote is the first in a series of hurdles before the team could get permission to break ground for the project. The Athletics have also been working on plans to relocate to Nevada and find a spot for a new stadium in Las Vegas. NBA – 5 players, $1.1 billion: NBA free agency starts with a bang The NBA generated more basketball related income than ever this past season, the total number coming up just short of $9 billion. The Nets have been working with Durant to find a trade partner, and he has multiple teams on his preferred list. That’s according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the player nor Brooklyn revealed any details publicly. ESPN first reported Durant’s trade request and cited Phoenix and Miami as two of his preferred destinations. The 24-year-old Bridges averaged career highs with 20.2 points and seven rebounds last season for the Hornets in what amounted to a breakout season while playing alongside All-Star LaMelo Ball. Bridges is also a rapper, who goes by the name RTB MB. With everyone still recovering from the very late finish to Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic, Wednesday dawned with Amelie Mauresmo's press conference, and Catherine was there to ask her about why the scheduling has favoured men's matches over women's matches this tournament. Elsewhere, we discuss Iga Swiatek's form, whether Jessica Pegula can do even better than Grand Slam quarter-finals, how Daria Kasatkina and Casper Ruud both broke new ground, and Marin Cilic's continued resurgence.
