Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! I'm so excited about today's episode. Today we're talking about how looking back at our history helps us understand our present, our future, and ourselves better.  Our guest for today's episode is my new friend, Jasmine L. Holmes. Jasmine is a mom, a historian, and a writer. Her newest book is called, Crowned with Glory: How Proclaiming the Truth of Black Dignity Has Shaped American History. I wanted to have Jasmine on the show because I've spent so much time lately looking back at our history as women — seeing where we've been, and how we got to where things are today, and it's just given me so much insight and context into my present to know more about our past. So when I saw that she had written this book, I knew I wanted to hear what this journey has looked like for her digging back into the past and what she learned from it. You guys, Jasmine is a brilliant teacher. She answered all of my questions so beautifully — (the big ones and also the ones that I worried might be kinda dumb?). Her answers were somehow simple and easy to understand, and also totally profound. I learned SO much in this conversation and I cannot WAIT to share it with you. Jasmine is a treasure. Today, we're with talking with author, educator, and speaker, Jasmine L. Holmes about how shame compounds, the "gospel" of shame, and how resentment and grief shape our souls. Shame has been a dominant theme in our cultural conversation for decades, but today, Jasmine is bringing a fresh take to the table. About shame, she said "Sometimes shame is hoisted on our shoulders in one big traumatic event, like a big boulder. Other times it adds weight to our shoulders incrementally, one pebble at a time, to where we barely notice the escalating weight." I resonate with that description a lot, and I'm sure you do, too. So in just a minute, Jasmine will unpack that statement and so much more. I am being taken care of while taking care of my children, and I'm not just pouring from an empty cup.” - Author and boy mom Jasmine Holmes “Teaching my oldest son how to steward it (his expressiveness and feeling deeply) instead of inadvertently teaching him to be ashamed of it is something I'm really committed to.” - Author and boy mom Jasmine Holmes “I need supernatural nurturing, and God provides that.” - Author and boy mom Jasmine Holmes “Community doesn't always have to look like going and being a part of an energy-sucking environment. Episode 143 – Jasmine Holmes joins us for an inspiring conversation about 10 seemingly unknown Black women who changed their communities when they were alive in the 18th and 19th centuries, and whose legacy can still be felt today. Regardless of our gender, our color, our age, our culture or even where we live in the world, we can all learn much from each of these 10 heroes. Jasmine says: “Black women are made in the image of God carved in ebony. This book is an unapologetic rejoicing in the fact that God chose to make each woman profiled in this book both Black and female for His glory. And it was good.” These heroes of the faith might have been largely forgotten until today, but Jasmine underwent thorough research to bring them back into the limelight to inspire us. In her book “Carved in Ebony” Jasmine invites us on a journey of discovery to transform us spiritually and challenge us to be forces for good and for change in our communities. Through the research and reflections of author Jasmine Holmes, you will be inspired by what each of these exceptional women can teach us about the intersections of faith and education, birth, privilege, opportunity, and so much more. Carved in Ebony will take you past the predominantly white, male contributions that seemingly dominate history books and church history to discover how Black women have been some of the main figures in defining the landscape of American history and faith. LEARN ABOUT BLACK WOMEN WHO SERVED GOD IN EXTRAORDINARY WAYS: ELIZABETH FREEMAN - NANNIE HELEN BURROUGHS - MARIA FEARING- CHARLOTTE FORTEN GRIMKÉ - SARAH MAPPS DOUGLASS - SARA GRIFFITH STANLEY - AMANDA BERRY SMITH - LUCY CRAFT LANEY - MARIA STEWART - FRANCES ELLEN WATKINS HARPER. These names may not be familiar, but each one of these women was a shining beacon of devotion in a world that did not value their lives. MEET JASMINE HOLMES Jasmine says of herself, I'm a pastor's kid. In the parable of the prodigal son, I'm definitely the do-good “older brother” who used to think she had everything under control. Throughout my twenty-year walk with the Lord, I've been reminded time and again of my need for Christ — through miscarriage, through post-partum depression, through two cross-country moves in two years. The focus of my writing and speaking is identity. I understand what it is like to endure an identity crisis. For most of my life, I've wrestled with pretending to have a neat and tidy checklist of how I'm supposed to present myself to the world. I'm beginning to understand that my security can't come from the external checklist or the opinions of others; it has to be found in the finished work of Jesus Christ, who is equipped to handle the messiness I tried to hide. https://jasminelholmes.com/ https://carvedinebonybook.com/#bonuses https://www.facebook.com/jasmine.baucham https://www.instagram.com/jasminelholmes/ Jasmine L. Simply Stories Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2022 55:40

Today I have the absolute pleasure of sharing with you my conversation with the one and the only Jasmine Holmes. Jasmine is an essayist, an educator and an excavator of jewels hidden in history. She shares her story of growing up in a predominately white environment and shares about the well-meaning people in her life who would say totally misguided and inappropriate things to her that she just felt like she had to accept as normal. As she began to learn about more about history and the Black experience within it, she began to realize how those patterns of behavior have been woven so deeply into the generations. When she became a wife and a Mother, she began to really unpack some of the layers of her community and experiences, which gave birth to her book Mother to Son: Letters to a Black Boy on Identity and Hope. In this beautiful book, she poured out her heart's desire to raise young men who understand what they've inherited, to live honestly and authentically, but also to be led by hope.  During her journey of unpacking some unsung ambassodors of the faith that she mentioned in Mother to Son, readers approached Jasmine about wanting to know more about these Black pillars of the faith they had not heard of before. That set Jasmine on a journey of discovering who else is out there. What emerged is her beautiful work Carved in Ebony: Lessons from the Black Women Who Shape Us. Jasmine calls this her love letter to the little girl that she was who had a quest for knowledge, but so often did not see people that looked like her. Y'all this book is SO good. The women in its pages are fascinating women of fierce faith, who fought for abolition, carried the Gospel with them where they went and more. I'm so inspired by them and by Jasmine.  The beauty and importance of intentionally unearthing people in history who have long been hidden within its yellowed pages is to give others a chance to have their voice an opportunity to be heard and highlight that their story and their life matters, and her book Carved in Ebony is an opportunity to do just that. In it you will find inspiring, faith fueling, and humbling stories of women that speak of the power of God in their lives, and the book serves as such a poignant picture of how much stories matter. These women lived lives that were full of struggle and triumph and they are ministering to us anew. That's what God does with the lives of people. They matter to Him. And you matter to Him, friend. You matter. Your story matters.  Connecting with Jasmine -Books -Pre-Order the young reader's edition of Carved in Ebony! -Facebook -Hear her on The Gospel Coalition's Podcast “Let's Talk” -Instagram -Podcast for “Carved in Ebony”  -Website Episode Sponsor: Hopefuel Facebook  Instagram Link to shop SIMPLY15 for 15% off your purchase References: -Dr. Jemar Tisby (and our conversation on episode 119!) -Night- Elie Wiesel -The made up science created to insight panic and sew racism and prejudice about indigineous people, Black people and Jewish people (additional really good article from Harvard about Scientific Racism) -Jim Crow  -Civil Rights Movement -Reconstruction: a success or failure? -Tuskegee Syphilis Study From Mother to Son- Jasmine Holmes -The Fire Next Time- James Baldwin -St. Anthony Neighborhood- Philando Castille's murder -The death of Mike Brown  -co-dependency and the drama triangle  -Ida B. The past few years have seen many discussions in American society and the Church about how we handle issues of race and ethnicity. Author Jasmine L. Holmes has addressed this topic from a very personal angle, writing a series of letters to her own son called Mother to Son: Letters to a Black Boy on Identity and Hope. She has some excellent insights about how the Church should think about justice and reconciliation, how we should engage with one another in general, and what it's like to be a mother of boys. This is a valuable discussion on a timely topic. Also in this episode: A somewhat unusual birth story leaves Jasmine on edge.Links for today's episode:Official book pageJasmine's personal websiteJasmine's Patreon pageTwitterInstagramFacebookLet's Talk podcastDayton Triangles football team

Whew Chile! The first time I heard "Your Singleness is Not A Punishment for your Imperfections" was in a blog post from Jasmine L. Holmes. A lot of times… unknowingly I believe… Christian Culture makes women feel like they have to be perfect to be deserving of a relationship. They tell us that we should be using our singleness to PREPARE for our relationship. So for someone who like me who feels like they have been preparing, it can feel like DANG HOW MUCH PREPARING DO I NEED TO DO?! It can easily start to make up obsess over our imperfections and somehow feel like they have disqualified us. This week we unpack that!
