Jesus, during his earthly ministry, had several locations of note with which He was intimately connected - Bethlehem where He was born, Nazareth where He was raised, Capernaum where He first ministered and which was the base for His Galilean ministry, Jerusalem where His ministry became very public and famous and where He was crucified. But if there was one place which He could call home during those three years of itinerant ministry - Bethany was the place. For Him it was a House of Love.

Stephanie here! I'm welcoming you into a conversation where we kick off talking about the Olympic games. My guest, Vera Schmitz, used to train to go to the Olympics. She'll tell us how that worked out, and how the Lord led her in a very different way with her sister Natalie to be the cofounder of Dwell Differently. It's a truly vibrant online community, committed to memorizing God's Word together every single month. Vera tells us what happens when we have God's word in our brain all the time, stored in our hearts, deep in our soul, at the tip of our tongue. It's not just about memorizing verses, but about being radically transformed by the power of God's word. When we engage in deep devotionals and discussions, we apply the truth practically and experience life change. In a world where truth is often subjective and ever-changing, the importance of being tethered to the rock-solid truth of Scripture cannot be understated. The Bible's reliability provides an unwavering foundation for our lives. Investigate it, stand on it, and allow it to shape your reality! Vera and I also discuss the significance of not being afraid and finding courage in God's promise to be with us. Through prayer and community, we can overcome challenges and find strength in Christ. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we struggle to find the words, and prayer becomes a vessel for His work. MORE ABOUT THE BOOK What if you had God's words with you all the time? Not just on your phone, but deep in your soul and on the tip of your tongue? It may sound daunting, or even impossible. Knowing how hard Scripture memorization can be, Dwell Differently founders Natalie Abbott and Vera Schmitz created a simple, creative, and smart way to memorize Scripture and keep God's promises in your heart. Natalie and Vera not only reveal the importance of having a mind built on God's Word, they actually give you the tools necessary to defeat negative thoughts. In doing so, they help you: · fight lies with truth · replace fear with peace · focus your heart on what really matters In a world filled with negative voices competing for our attention, just one word from God is more powerful than any other. It's time to store up a wealth of them. MORE ABOUT VERA SCHMITZ Sisters. Friends. Jesus peeps. That's us. We're Natalie and Vera—sisters from a big fat family of seven with so many similarities. We look the same—no we aren't twins! We love the same food—homemade tortillas with LOADS of butter. And we share the same passion—helping people connect with God through his Word. That's why we do what we do over here, showing up each month, memorizing a new verse. We talk about it on our weekly podcasts and devos and on Instagram every day… BECAUSE, we really believe that the God of the universe loves us and has spoken to us in the Bible. And when we are in it, we can know him and experience freedom and life and transformation. Won't you come along with us? — Natalie & Vera https://dwelldifferently.com/ We invite you to check out the first episode of each of our series, and decide which one you will want to start with. I had the delight of welcoming the brilliant Joy Clarkson, an American author, podcaster, and editor based in the UK. In a world dominated by technological metaphors and a rapid pace of life, she shares wonderful insights, reflections, and inspiration from her latest book "You Are A Tree." Joy joined me on the Gospel Spice podcast for a thought-provoking conversation about the power of metaphors in capturing the intangible aspects of life, finding resilience in times of upheaval, and embracing the poetry of everyday experiences. Joy Clarkson beautifully expounds on the significance of metaphors in illuminating the intangible aspects of life. She draws a compelling comparison to light as a metaphor for wisdom and guidance in her book. She reveals her desire to bring flavor and richness to people's lives, much like salt brings out existing flavors in food. Joy's aspiration for her book is to intensify and flavor life, leaving people in awe of the poetry of life and the deep meaning woven into everyday experiences. Through her work, she encourages readers to slow down, pay attention, and savor the richness of life around them. In our discussion, Joy challenges the paradigm of equating human beings to machines, emphasizing the resilience and complexity of humans. She contrasts the organic nature of humans with the mechanical consistency of machines. Joy artfully weaves these insights into the metaphor of human beings as more akin to organic organisms, specifically comparing them to the resilience and growth of trees. This fresh perspective stands in stark contrast to a culture dominated by machine and computer metaphors, encouraging readers to appreciate their own resilience and organic nature. I must take a moment to praise the beautiful writing of Joy Clarkson and the book's ability to prompt readers to desire and experience the world around them. Drawing on this metaphorical culinary journey, Joy illuminates the significance of the book's title. She reveals her belief that her book has the potential to draw out the existing richness and flavors of life, leaving people with a more profound appreciation for the everyday experiences that God has intricately woven with meaning. In this context, the metaphor of the tree signifies resilience and the potential for growth, guiding readers to embrace their own capacity for resilience, growth, and rootedness. The conversation expands as we explore how Joy managed to write her book during a time of personal upheaval. She vulnerably shares how she embraced resilience and found inspiration during a challenging season of life, highlighting her ability to slow down and pay attention to the richness and meaning in everyday experiences. Choosing to draw strength from her surroundings, she surrendered to the process and found resilience in the form of a metaphorical journey, paralleling the growth and rootedness of a tree. This recounting adds depth to the metaphorical exploration within her book. Joy Clarkson's enlivening conversation on the Gospel Spice podcast beautifully illustrates the power of metaphors in conveying the richness of life and finding resilience in times of upheaval. Through the lens of the metaphorical and organic, readers are invited to slow down, savor life, and appreciate their own resilience. Embracing Joy's poignant insights, we are challenged to see the poetry in our everyday experiences and to draw inspiration from the resilience and growth of the trees that surround us, witnessing the beauty of our own metaphorical journey. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:
Book Vs. Movie:Miracle on 34th StreetValentine Davies's Story Vs. the 1947 Classic Film "Can you say classic?" In the almost ten years that we have been putting on this show, we somehow missed "Miracle on 34th Street" as one of the most famous adaptations of holiday films. With a story by beloved writer Valentine Davies and direction by his friend George Seaton, the film (released in May of 1947 for some baffling reason!) became a massive hit with filmgoers. Starring Maureen O'Hara as a frazzled Macy's executive, Natalie Wood as her skeptical daughter Susan, and Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle, the film has everything you could want in a Christmas movie. You have the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, a love story, and a court scene that settles whether the State of New York Recognizes Santa Claus once and for all. What else do you need? This episode is sponsored by Bethany House's You Made It Feel Like Christmas by Toni Shiloh. It's the most wonderful time of the year--for everyone except Starr Lewis. As if going home for the holidays jobless and single wasn't bad enough, she's dragged into a holiday season full of activities leading up to her sister's uber-romantic Christmas Eve wedding--to Starr's ex-boyfriend. But when her brother's best friend, Waylon Emmerson, attends their family Thanksgiving, she wonders if coming home for Christmas isn't so bad after all.As Starr finds the perfect distraction in helping Waylon make over his late mother's Christmas shop, the most wonderful time of the year works its magic, and the spark between them grows. But with the holidays fast approaching, Starr must decide what she wants out of life after the gifts are unwrapped and the ornaments are put away--to return to New York City or to open her heart to a love that will last beyond Christmas Day?Follow author Toni Shiloh!! There's been so much buzz about Gabrielle Meyer's new Timeless Series that I jumped at the chance to have her on the show! We had a great conversation about the first two installments of this series, When the Day Comes and In This Moment. We talked about God's sovereignty over our place in history, the fulfillment of Gabrielle's dream of writing for Bethany House, how she manages to write six books a year, and what's coming in books three and four—yes, there's going to be a book four! Here's the description of In This Moment from Bethany House: Maggie inherited a gift from her parents that allows her to live three separate lives in 1861, 1941, and 2001. Each night she goes to sleep in one time period and wakes up in another. Until, that is, she turns twenty-one, when she will have to forfeit two of those lives—and everyone she knows in them—forever. • In 1861, Maggie is the daughter of an influential senator at the outbreak of the Civil War, navigating a capital full of Southern spies and wounded soldiers. • In 1941, she is a navy nurse, grappling with her knowledge of the future when she's asked to join a hospital ship being sent to Pearl Harbor. • And in 2001, she's a brilliant young medical student, fulfilling her dream of becoming a surgeon, yet unable to use her modern skills in her other paths. While Maggie has sworn off romance until she makes her final choice, an intriguing man tugs at her heart in each era. The mysterious British gentleman. The prickly, demanding doctor. The charming young congressman. She's drawn to each man in different ways, only complicating the impossible decision she must make, which looms ever closer. With so much on the line, how can Maggie choose just one life to keep and the rest to lose? Purchase When the Day Comes on Amazon (affiliate). Purchase In This Moment on Amazon (affiliate). Life doesn't always go the way we want it to. If you've lived any amount of time, then you know that. What I love about Toni Shiloh's novels with Bethany House is that they are spiritual or Hollywood fairy tales. They capture that idea of finding a prince or a star who thinks we're beautiful and worthwhile. They see the value in us that we can't quite find. I love this chance to catch up with Toni and talk about her books and the characters she's bringing to life. Y'all, I could not put the Love Script down because I love Neavah. Lamont wasn't so bad himself, but Neavah was the type of heroine I can imagine being friends with. TJ Morris is a servant of The Most High, a husband and father; managing partner of several international entrepreneurial ventures; a business consultant; personal coach, YouTube creator, Podcast host, radio personality, homesteader, carpenter, electrician, and originator of "Tactical Muppet Face." He and his family, flocks, herds, and gaggles of business ventures maintain the Land of Almost Homestead in ArklaTexaHomas, USA. Grindstone Ministries is an Oklahoma-based 501(c)(3)non-profit organization. Grindstone was founded in 2019 to provide disaster relief and construction services to those most affected by devastating storms. To that end, Grindstone has deployed more than 30 times in the last three years to serve others by performing work as varied as a complete home makeover for a single mom with 3 kids whose house was destroyed by flooding, to disaster cleanup and critical materials distribution during the recent tornadoes in Kentucky. Grindstone also blesses other ministries and like-minded organizations with labor, materials, and equipment when the Father provides the opportunity. With the Father's guidance, Grindstone Ministries has grown from an all-volunteer organization to include two full-time staff to better facilitate ongoing and future projects as well as to coordinate and communicate with the blessing that is our army of volunteers. Kaleb House was established while on mission with Grindstone Ministries at Bethany House (a restoration facility for juvenile human trafficking survivors), Grindstone leadership was so moved by the plight of those involved, that we became convicted to not only complete the construction of Bethany House so that it could become operational, but to build our own restoration facility to help those child survivors of human trafficking. To that end, in 2021, we founded our second 501(c)(3) organization: Kaleb House. This Kaleb House organization provides a covering for abused and trafficked children and will allow them to grow and learn in a safe home-like environment. @BearIndependent #prepping #prepper #god #jesus #christian #christianity

Undergoing Transformation: Mother of Child with Disabilities Shares How God Uses Unexpected Seasons When unexpected moments change life's trajectory, we're left with a choice: Do we overcome the unexpected, as the world recommends, or undergo it? Author Jillian Benfield says undergoing an unexpected season begins a transformation that deconstructs our old self and reconstructs us into who God intends us to become. In her book The Gift of the Unexpected, Jillian uses her own life-altering moment—her son's Down syndrome and congenital heart defect diagnoses— to encourage readers not to gloss over the hard parts of the human condition. Instead, she says, undergoing the unexpected gives us the opportunity to let go of our old selves, tearing down false beliefs about our identities, humanity, and the divine. “Intense. Stunning. Needed. Jillian's words will help you discover beauty in the unexpected.” Leslie Means, creator of Her View From Home In a culture where the prosperity gospel (control) and the American dream (achievement) are glorified, God uses the unexpected to disorient us from the ideals of Western society. His surprising gift equips believers to relate to the world's pain and recognize how our worth and purpose rest in Him. “I believe your unexpected moment, your unexpected life, holds the same potential for you,” Jillian writes. “But only if you resist society's instance on overcoming the unexpected and choose instead to undergo it.” The Gift of the Unexpected releases with Bethany House on January 17, 2023. Jillian Benfield is a former journalist and news anchor. She holds a broadcast journalism degree from the University of Georgia. As a freelance writer, her essays about living an unexpected life have appeared on sites such as TODAY, Good Morning America, Yahoo! News, and ABC News. Jillian regularly advocates for the full inclusion of people with disabilities in her writings, in her community, and as a part of the National Down Syndrome Congress's National Down Syndrome Advocacy Coalition. http://jillianbenfield.com/ Connect with us on social media: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKvKY93BmNp9D-uuStspcEQ https://www.facebook.com/sprinkledwithhopepodcast https://twitter.com/sprinkledhope20 https://www.instagram.com/sprinkledwithhopejason_shane/ email : info@sprinkledwithhope.com

Our guest on Episode 49 of the Rider Magazine Insider Podcast is Gina “Brooklyn” Neumann, a member of the Leather and Lace MC, an international women's motorcycle club founded in 1983. Although Leather and Lace MC is a patch club, it is by no means an outlaw club. It's a family-oriented MC whose mission is to promote sisterhood among its members, to ride together, and to work as a club to raise funds for charitable organizations that support children and families. Brooklyn is a member of Leather and Lace MC's Midway Crue, which includes members in Virginia and Maryland. In October, the Midway Crue hosted a poker run and the proceeds went to Bethany House of Northern Virginia, which provides a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. In this episode, we discuss the history of Leather and Lace MC, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023, and we talk about the stigma that faces patch clubs, the profiling of motorcyclists, and the importance of sharing knowledge about protective gear, riding etiquette, and safety to new riders. It all began with maple cheesecake. I don't know if it was actually in the book, or if she just got me thinking about it, but when I read Buying Love by Toni Shiloh it not only made me hungry for something I'd never had before, it also introduced me to an author who would become a dear friend. For five years we worked together in an annual Christmas collection (we're still weeping the loss of her this year!), and so like many of her friends, I CHEERED when I heard she got her dream contract with Bethany House... and then... drooled with the rest of the world when the cover for In Search of a Prince came out. Well, her second book in that series is here, and well, it's time to talk about it, don't you think? Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. If You Love a Good Cinderella Story Here's One with a New Twist Not all Cinderella stories have to feature downtrodden, unwanted girls with stepsisters with big feet (seriously, cutting off toes and heels? Ugh!) Sometimes it's just an ordinary woman in an ordinary job discovering a secret that transforms her life into the extraordinary! Add to that an unusual setting (West African Island Nation!!!) and intriguing customs and... whew! All the things! Let's just say I've been hoarding that book for ages, waiting for the "right moment" and even after all that... I still haven't read it. However, while editing this episode, I DID put it on my "Currently Reading" shelf on GoodReads. #BecauseDuh! Fun fact: I wasn't the only one who got Princess Diaries vibes when she described the story. I mean, it's not the same at all, but there are elements that, if you pulled them out away from the rest are similar. One of those being... The best friend who goes with her when Brielle from In Search of a Prince goes to assume royal duties. Sound familiar? Yeah, after talking to Toni--not so much. I mean, remember Lily? Bubbly? Optimistic? Empathetic? Not hardly! I love that Toni wrote Iris' story in To Win a Prince, and while it's still languishing in my Audible library, I'm eager to get started. WOOT! To Win a Prince by Toni Shiloh Can she stop herself from falling before she's too far gone? As a fashion aficionado and best friend of the queen of the African island country Ọlọrọ Ilé, Iris Blakely dreams of using her talent to start a sustainable clothing line to help citizens in impoverished areas and honor the country's resources. But when she discovers that Ekon Diallo--the man who betrayed her best friend--will be her business consultant, the battle between her desires and reality begins. Ekon Diallo has lost everything: his princely title, his material possessions, his friends, and the respect of his fellow Ọlọrans. To pay for his actions against Ọlọrọ Ilé, he's forced to assist the charismatic Iris Blakely--but he can't allow his heart to distract him from regaining his status. Though they come from vastly different worlds, Iris and Ekon are both determined to reach their goals, and the only way to do that is to work together--if they can just keep their hearts from getting in the way . . . Elsie Lodde is the owner and operator of Bethany's Home Sweet Haunted Home in Jackson, CA, one of the most haunted air BnBs in the country. Constructed in the late 1800s, historic Bethany House has a reputation for a haunting in every room, whether it be residual, or an actual entity. We had the privilege of an invitation to tour the location and record our show in the sitting room with Elsie (and her "residents") and learn about the house's history and haunted reputation. At the end of our episode we've included an EVP session conducted by Tracy (Warning: it's recorded in its entirety so it's quite a bit long). Welcome to Episode 101 of "What In The...? For Father's Day, Stephanie welcomes NLF chaplain and Pastor Jonathan Evans for a no-nonsense conversation about our investment as parents for the Kingdom of God. With his trademark candid and bold kindness, Jonathan shares his approach to parenting, as well as what he learned from his parents, Lois and Dr Tony Evans. We discuss fatherhood in particular, but these principles apply to all forms of parenting and for everyone who ministers to children of all ages! So, parents, grandparents, family members and all youth leaders -- this episode will inspire you, challenge you, and help you remember how eternal your investment is! Jonathan shares, “God is calling you to go further, rise higher, and achieve more in His name than you could ever imagine. But you will never get to experience all that God has for you unless you are willing to rise up out of the depths of your own disappointments, get up off the couches of your own comfort zones, and pursue His plan for this season. Now.” Beyond parenting, Jonathan shades his quest for a deeper intimacy with God. He remembers living life on “cruise control,” comfortable where he was, following in the footsteps of his well-known and respected father (Dr. Tony Evans), until one day he realized he didn't know his own role or purpose in life. Jonathan didn't wait to figure it out; he took action and pursued what God had in store for him. His book, Your Time is Now urges us to get out of the “comfort” rut and do the same. Using the Old Testament leader Joshua as a model for stepping up to God's calling, Jonathan invites us to stop living at surface level, dig deeper, and step into our callings now, no matter what obstacles stand in our way. “Now is the time for you to live out your purpose for God,” says Jonathan. “Not when you're older. Not when you've settled down. Not when you feel like you've got nothing else to do…Now is your season.” In Your Time is Now, Jonathan invites us to shift our perspectives from an outward concern about what the world thinks, to an inward focus on the only One whose opinion really matters: God. No matter the season we find ourselves in or the challenges we face, Jonathan encourages us to stand on the truth that God can and will use us and this season for His purpose, if only we intentionally and actively pursue Him. If you missed our Mother's Day episode, we invite you to check out the phenomenally inspiring convo between Molly De Frank and Stephanie about how to digitally detox your kids! Jonathan discusses the importance of keeping our kids grounded in real life and away from screens, so take a listen to Episode 147 (Digital Detox for kids with Molly DeFrank) for practical tips. Episode 143 – Jasmine Holmes joins us for an inspiring conversation about 10 seemingly unknown Black women who changed their communities when they were alive in the 18th and 19th centuries, and whose legacy can still be felt today. Regardless of our gender, our color, our age, our culture or even where we live in the world, we can all learn much from each of these 10 heroes. Jasmine says: “Black women are made in the image of God carved in ebony. This book is an unapologetic rejoicing in the fact that God chose to make each woman profiled in this book both Black and female for His glory. And it was good.” These heroes of the faith might have been largely forgotten until today, but Jasmine underwent thorough research to bring them back into the limelight to inspire us. In her book “Carved in Ebony” Jasmine invites us on a journey of discovery to transform us spiritually and challenge us to be forces for good and for change in our communities. Through the research and reflections of author Jasmine Holmes, you will be inspired by what each of these exceptional women can teach us about the intersections of faith and education, birth, privilege, opportunity, and so much more. Carved in Ebony will take you past the predominantly white, male contributions that seemingly dominate history books and church history to discover how Black women have been some of the main figures in defining the landscape of American history and faith. LEARN ABOUT BLACK WOMEN WHO SERVED GOD IN EXTRAORDINARY WAYS: ELIZABETH FREEMAN - NANNIE HELEN BURROUGHS - MARIA FEARING- CHARLOTTE FORTEN GRIMKÉ - SARAH MAPPS DOUGLASS - SARA GRIFFITH STANLEY - AMANDA BERRY SMITH - LUCY CRAFT LANEY - MARIA STEWART - FRANCES ELLEN WATKINS HARPER. These names may not be familiar, but each one of these women was a shining beacon of devotion in a world that did not value their lives. MEET JASMINE HOLMES Jasmine says of herself, I'm a pastor's kid. In the parable of the prodigal son, I'm definitely the do-good “older brother” who used to think she had everything under control. Throughout my twenty-year walk with the Lord, I've been reminded time and again of my need for Christ — through miscarriage, through post-partum depression, through two cross-country moves in two years. The focus of my writing and speaking is identity. I understand what it is like to endure an identity crisis. For most of my life, I've wrestled with pretending to have a neat and tidy checklist of how I'm supposed to present myself to the world. I'm beginning to understand that my security can't come from the external checklist or the opinions of others; it has to be found in the finished work of Jesus Christ, who is equipped to handle the messiness I tried to hide. https://jasminelholmes.com/ https://carvedinebonybook.com/#bonuses https://www.facebook.com/jasmine.baucham https://www.instagram.com/jasminelholmes/ Jasmine L. Holmes is the author of Mother to Son: Letters to a Black Boy on Identity and Hope. She is also a contributing author for Identity Theft: Reclaiming the Truth of Our Identity in Christ and His Testimonies and My Heritage: Women of Color on the Word of God. She and her husband, Phillip, are parenting three young sons. They attend Redeemer Church, PCA in Jackson, Mississippi. SHADES OF RED is a new original series by GospelSpice Ministries. Weaving real-life Bible stories, this series will help you get informed, keep interceding, get involved, and keep influencing our generation. Mikala Albertson is a wife and family practice doctor turned mostly stay-at-home mom to five kids ranging from 16 to five. She is passionate about the beauty of an ordinary life and writes under the name Ordinary on Purpose on social media. She will be releasing a book in March of 2022 titled Ordinary on Purpose: Surrendering Perfect and Discovering Beauty Amid the Rubble through Bethany House. Mikala hopes her writing will give permission to let go of 'should' and 'have to' and embrace who you already are...lovely and loved, imperfect and beautiful, ordinary, and so very on purpose. When I messaged Mikala and asked her to be on the podcast, I thought it would be fun if we talked about the expectations we had before we became moms...and what reality looks like on the other side. We both have 5 kids (4 boys and 1 girl) and found a lot in common, and while I expected some laughs, I got so much more in my conversation with Mikala. She is so thoughtful, descriptive, and wise and I hope you listen in with a cup of coffee and feel like you are joining in the best conversation about motherhood with trusted friends. Quotable quotes: Mikala: "I thought Motherhood was about the big moments…holidays, vacations and special family traditions, and like a designated game night. And those are all very lovely....But I'm learning that—mostly—motherhood happens in ordinary moments. And some of the most meaningful things are small and simple. "Brittany: "The motherhood experience is so complex. We want to boil it down to, like, the one thing, or the sweet emotion, or the “enjoy it while you can!” or a platitude…but it's just so many things. Making room for that “both/and”, I think can be a generous gift to ourselves, to say “I miss it” and “I'm grateful” and “I'm sad” and “I'm excited for the future”—all of those emotions are valid.” Article referenced: "Christmas is Cumulative"Find Mikala here: Facebook Instagram Blog Pre-order her book here!!!
