3273: AI, Ethics, and the Human Element in Leadership

The Tech Blog Writer Podcast

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape how we work, lead, and interact, the need for emotionally intelligent and human-centered leadership has never been more urgent. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with Jen Croneberger, the Founder and Chief Inspiration Officer at The Human Leadership Institute, to explore how relational leadership guides organizations through the noise and complexity of rapid AI adoption. With a background in sports and performance psychology and a career that spans working with elite athletes, government agencies, and global brands like Nike and Samsung, Jen brings a rare perspective to the conversation around AI. She argues that amidst all the automation and data, our ability to build trust, communicate transparently, and stay grounded in shared values will define success moving forward. Throughout the conversation, Jen makes the case that leaders today cannot rely on technical skills alone. They must create cultures of psychological safety, model adaptability, and foster a clear understanding of how AI can enhance rather than replace human capabilities. We also dive into some of the more challenging topics, including the ethical implications of AI, resistance to change, and why some employees struggle to see a future where they coexist with intelligent machines. What I found particularly insightful was Jen's ability to draw parallels between leading teams in high-stakes athletic environments and leading through tech transformation. Whether it's building resilience after a setback or navigating uncertain outcomes with confidence, the same foundational principles apply. As we look to a future where AI is embedded in every business layer, Jen's message is timely and practical. If you are a leader wondering how to support your teams through disruption without losing the soul of your culture, this episode will give you plenty to reflect on. How will you lead in a world where machines are intelligent, but people still need to feel seen?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2024 38:31

Tony Martignetti is the founder and Chief Inspiration Officer of Inspired Purpose Partners. He is the author of “Climbing the Right Mountain: Navigating the Journey to An Inspired Life.”  Tony shares how meditation and therapy helped him rediscover purpose during a dark time, and he shares insights on leadership and self-awareness.  Through his “grounded leadership” approach, Tony advises leaders to stay intentional and true to their values, especially in challenging times.  To cultivate compassion, Tony recommends vulnerability and authentic engagement with teams. He shares advice on overcoming fear when stepping out of comfort zones and encourages reconnecting with past contacts to spark new opportunities.    Key Takeaways [06:34] Tony describes a period in his life when he felt disconnected from himself and burnt out in a corporate role that didn't align with his true identity. This challenging time led him to meditation and therapy as tools to restore “color” and purpose to his life. He shares how practices like meditation can increase self-awareness, helping individuals reconnect with their values and passions. [11:36] As a leadership coach, Tony emphasizes “grounded leadership”—an approach to staying intentional and focused, especially during periods of rapid change. Grounded leaders understand their core values and make deliberate decisions rather than reacting to external pressures. This framework encourages leaders to reconnect with who they are, why they lead, and the purpose that drives their actions. [14:41] In his book Climbing the Right Mountain, Tony addresses purpose-driven leadership and how leaders can assess whether they're truly on the right path for themselves and their organizations. He shares a practical exercise, asking leaders to review their upcoming week. If nothing excites them, it may signal disconnection from their values, prompting a reevaluation. Purposeful leadership doesn't always mean drastic career shifts; sometimes, it involves a simple mindset change to realign with one's “why.” [21:40] Tony recalls working under Henry Tamir, a CEO who embodied compassionate leadership. By centering every decision on the wellbeing of patients, Tamir inspired a purpose-driven culture within the organization. Tony explains that authentic compassion in leadership requires vulnerability and genuine concern for team members, beyond superficial gestures. [26:50] Tony speaks to the fear leaders often face when considering a move out of comfortable roles, particularly for those in mid-career. He recommends a balanced approach, leveraging experience in ways that provide security—such as consulting or board work—while still pursuing fulfilling challenges. He believes that settling without pursuing one's potential leads to regret, encouraging leaders to make bold but strategic decisions. [32:20] Tony's biggest leadership takeaway from his journey is that no one succeeds alone. He highlights the importance of having a supportive network of people who believe in you, even before you believe in yourself. This support helps overcome personal limitations and fosters expanded perspectives and growth. [36:29] Tony challenges listeners to reconnect with old contacts, emphasizing that leadership is ultimately about fostering connection. In his experience, reviving past relationships can open doors to new possibilities and enrich one's personal and professional life. Connection, Tony believes, is essential not only for growth but for building a fulfilling, purpose-driven career. [37:44] And remember, “You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club” - Jack London   Quotable Quotes "I need to leave this room to change this room." "If you're willing to feel everything, you can have anything." "You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club." "Expand your vision, narrow your focus." "We don't go it alone. We have people on the journey, even if we don't recognize it."  "Just because the world around us is moving fast, doesn't mean we have to make fast decisions." "Compassionate leadership is so important; it's putting the patient at the center of every decision."   Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. Website: https://www.bizcatalyst360.com   Unsheltered - None of Us Are Home Until All of Us Are Home:  What's your first question or thought when encountering a homeless person? Do you wonder: Is it their choice to be on the street? Are they just lazy and don't want to work? Are they all mentally ill, alcoholics, or addicted to drugs? Are they dangerous? The list of questions and assumptions goes on and is shared by many. Many homeless people work but, without a permanent address or transportation, often have difficulty finding and keeping jobs. While some homeless people have mental health issues or substance abuse problems, most do not. Dangerous? Homeless people are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators. They are often targets of violence and theft, and they live in constant fear for their safety. It is important to remember that many homeless people are just like you and me but have fallen on hard times. They are human beings who deserve our compassion and understanding versus being harshly judged based on their circumstances or appearance. This Book had to be written! It's time for us to change the narrative, starting with changing the label. The word "homeless" is stigmatizing, immediately conjuring up the many misconceptions mentioned above. "Unsheltered" is more neutral and casts a much wider net beyond unhoused, including those whose primary nighttime residence is unsuitable for human habitation (for example, a city sidewalk, vehicle, abandoned building, or park). Before you ignore another homeless person on the street, remember? That could be someone's father or mother. They have a story - perhaps like the real ones you will discover here - each destined to change the narrative, one human being, one voice at a time. In this episode of "Leveraging Thought Leadership," host Peter Winick sits down with Tony Martignetti, Founder and Chief  Inspiration Officer at Inspired Purpose Partners, author of  climbing The Right Mountain: Navigating the Journey to An Inspired Life and host of the Virtual Campfire podcast. Tony shares  his journey into the world of thought leadership, which began not from a clear plan, but through a series of life shifts that revealed a deeper passion for guiding leaders in chaotic times. Tony describes how his path transitioned from finance and  strategy roles in biotech to thought leadership and executive coaching. Despite success in his previous careers, he felt  something was missing. Growing up, Tony had a creative side, known for his art, but societal expectations pushed him toward pre-med and then business. The discomfort of being in the wrong field led him to re-evaluate his career, ultimately deciding to forge his own path. He emphasizes the importance of creating your  own place when you don't fit in elsewhere, using curiosity and exploration to discover where you belong. His approach to finding his niche combined a balance of passion, skill, and market demand. Tony introduces his guiding philosophy, "Expand your vision, narrow your focus," encouraging exploration before narrowing down on a specific area to serve. By having "curiosity conversations," he was able to understand the problems and pain points of others, leading him to his current role as an executive coach for tech leaders. Tony's clients are typically in the tech industry, where his unique perspective aligns well with innovative thinkers. He helps chief technology officers, chief science officers, and chief strategy officers communicate their technical ideas to a broader audience and break down silos within their organizations. Through his  work, he facilitates better communication among teams and creates a collaborative environment for leaders. While most of his work requires being physically present with his clients, Tony is considering productizing some aspects of his coaching to offer more scalable solutions in the future. He acknowledges the challenge many thought leaders face with marketing and sales and shares his three-part strategy to overcome it: "Affiliate, Associate, Collaborate." This approach involves partnering with other experts, engaging in professional groups, and collaborating with others to create greater impact. Overall, this episode delves into Tony's journey from a traditional career path to becoming a thought leader in the tech industry. It highlights his insights into building connections, fostering communication, and navigating the challenges of a rapidly  hanging world. Three Key Takeaways: • Forge Your Own Path: Tony Martignetti's journey illustrates that career paths are not always linear. He transitioned from finance and strategy roles in biotech to thought leadership in tech,  emphasizing that sometimes you need to create the place where you belong rather than trying to fit into predefined roles. He encourages people to use curiosity and exploration to find their unique path. • Expand Your Vision, Narrow Your Focus: Tony's guiding  philosophy underscores the importance of exploring a wide range of possibilities before honing in on a specific niche. This approach allows for a broader understanding of where one can make the most impact before concentrating efforts on a particular area. Through "curiosity conversations," he was able to understand others' needs and pain points, guiding him to his current role as an executive coach for tech leaders. • Affiliate, Associate, Collaborate: Tony shares his strategy for overcoming the marketing and sales challenges that many thought leaders face. This three-part approach involves affiliating with other experts to offer comprehensive solutions, associating with professional groups for personal and business development, and collaborating with others to create greater impact. These steps highlight the importance of building relationships and leveraging a network to succeed in thought leadership.

I hope you're all having a wonderful start to 2024 and that you have some things that you're feeling excited about.  If not, perhaps my next guest will inspire you as she is the founder, host and Chief Inspiration Officer of the Women in the Arena Podcast…a celebration of everyday women living extraordinary lives in plain sight. Now in its 4th year, the Women in the Arena podcast seeks to inspire, encourage and challenge women to reach for the greatness they were made for.  And I invite the men to stick around as I imagine we all could use that kind of encouragement! As a corporate veteran, and an award winning sales professional, Audra A-gin has 25 years' experience of being one of the few women in the room, and in many cases, the only one. While the women she worked with may have been outnumbered, she recognized that they were all uniquely exceptional and became fascinated in learning more about them and their experiences.  It became increasingly clear that these women were contributing significant value to their organizations, families and careers and that their contributions were either being taken for granted or overlooked, sometimes even by themselves.  Audra had aspirations to change that and as a result Women in the Arena was created. As the creator, producer and host, Audra says it's a platform unlike any other, it's a celebration!  Her motto is to celebrate women doing extraordinary things in plain sight. She believes that if we start to recognize the value within ourselves, then we can start to acknowledge the value within each other and see that we have more similarities than what appears on the surface.  It is that knowledge that begins to change the narrative from “you are my competition” to “you are my best asset”. This is life changing and as a result, world changing. This is Audra's goal, to change the world one interview at a time. Let's meet this world changer by welcoming Audra Agen to 19 Stories.
