In this episode of Every Rockie Ever, Skyler and Dustin reunite to talk about two notable veteran catchers for the Rockies. Yorvit Torrealba etched his name into Rockies lore as the primary catcher in 2007 while carving out a solid career in purple. Despite being a platoon catcher behind Chris Ianneta, Torrealba always made the most of his playing time. Jonathan Lucroy was a great trade acquisition at the deadline in 2017, immediately impacting a young pitching staff and navigating them to the playoffs. What made him better was that he found some offensive resurgence after the trade, even though the power wasn't there, and made us wish we could have re-signed him. Learn more about your ad choices. The Tampa Bay Rays are Cleveland Guardians south. They have nearly double-digit former Cleveland coaches and players on the roster. As a matter of fact, they have acquired the three central players from the Jonathan Lucroy deal. Yu Chang and Francisco Mejia were the big pieces but at the time Shawn Armstrong had pitched in the majors and had an ERA under two with a strikeout per nine over 15. The fourth player was Greg Allen. We revisit this trade since Armstrong picked up the loss and again the major pieces are all in Tampa. We also talk about the Miller deal as maybe the most successful player from both of those trades is JP Feyereisen who is also a pitcher for you guessed it Tampa. We switched to a game with significant consequences but saw very little happen. Tampa Bay Rays have a magic number of one but lost two of three to Cleveland. I had predicted that Jeffrey Springs would be a hard matchup and he was, but Cal Quantrill was just as good. The Guardians rally late to win thanks to Will Brennan, Steven Kwan, and Oscar Gonzalez. We talk about the choice to walk Jose to face Oscar and why it was an odd choice. We end with some talk about the weird season flips for Bo Naylor and Bryan Lavastida. Bo is with the team on the taxi squad with a chance to be added before the end of the year. I wonder if Lavastida might be taken off the 40-man, and if they will promote yet another unicorn this year to the roster making rookie number 17. We then talk about how Steven Kwan still can't seem to get any respect. If one is talking about rookies in baseball and don't mention him then you are doing it wrong. There are a clear top four hitters and two pitchers and anyone not mentioning Kwan well I question their knowledge. This is a podcast. Well, OK, yes, this is a podcast. But it's so, so much more. Really, though, it's up to you to determine what it is, exactly. When we flip the baseball card over, it says that this is the boldest crossover event to date in South Side Sox history, as the Killer B's (Tommy Barbee, Keelin Billue) invade North Side Sox (Janice Scurio, Sam Sherman). The result is as many laughs and expletives as you can pack into 103 minutes of White Sox audio. How do the Killer Side Sox/North B's reveal themselves? Phoenix is back in the house! South Side Sox Podcast 26 features Brett Ballantini, talking to writer/photographer Sean Williams about Cactus League play. Sean is one of the few of us in the world to have seen a live baseball game this month, attending this past Sunday's White Sox loss at Camelback Ranch. Here's what we've got going for you: A sigh of relief over seeing Yoán Moncada in apparent full health, and José Abreu (hopefully) avoiding obvious debilitation from his coronavirus infection Fighting for spots in a perhaps already-full White Sox bullpen Zack Collins, and the battle for backup catcher (and how Jonathan Lucroy's quest for a Cactus League batting title could affect things) Shout-out to the White Sox, who have issued SBN/SSS some unprecedented access and given Sean a pass for the photo pit for a few games this spring Sean's challenge in shooting “from the stands” when covering the Arizona Rookie League and Fall League play Sean also was at Sunday's game at Camelback Ranch, and shares his experiences there, and how it may or may not apply to games in Chicago next month The science behind a gambling outlet issuing a small-sample drinking survey (pegging White Sox fans as “top drinkers”) that briefly set White Sox Twitter aflame Learn more about your ad choices. Don’t stop believin’ in Lance Lynn. In his first spring training game with the White Sox, he showed us exactly what he’s all about: He doesn’t like to be taken out of games, and he doesn’t care who’s in the batter's box. Chuck Garfien, Vinnie Duber, and Ryan McGuffey talk about Lynn’s Cactus League performance against the San Francisco Giants and why he’s such a throwback that brings to mind the 2005 White Sox starting staff. The crew also discusses the backup-catcher competition and Michael Kopech's painful-sounding games of catch with fellow fireballer Garrett Crochet.(2:20) - Lance Lynn does not care about what your lineup looks like(8:00) - Who else on this team is a 2005 throwback?(13:25) - Who will be the backup catcher for the White Sox? Yea! Baseball! Well, sorta, if you think baseball is when you just stop an inning whenever you feel like it. Which, admittedly, requires its own sort of strategy. This week, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and son and west coast corespondent, Will, have fun lashing into the incredible stupidity of a multi-billion dollar organization so incompetent it can't decide what rules and lineups half of its members will play under in a season that begins in less than a month, as well as enjoying the concept of end-an-inning-any-old-time spring training. There is a serious disagreement — is MLB run so badly if the commissioner headed Amazon it would just be a corner store in Iowa somewhere, or would that store have closed by now? As for actual baseball, we look at the good things the White Sox have shown so far (Lucas Giolito! Andrew Vaughn! Adam Engel! Just about all the hitters who will actually be on the team!) And then we delve into the one terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing made much more obviously worse by Jonathan Lucroy's defense Tuesday — the fact the Sox really have no backup catcher better than randomly picking a fan out of the stands (even one of those Covid-induced cardboard fans). But, there's baseball! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
