Somehow we ended up with another zombie romance around Valentine's Day for the second year in a row. Paris chose Rabid Heart for this season after her partner randomly turned to her one day last year and said, “Hey did you realize Jeremy Wagner from Broken Hope is an author?” This piqued her interest since she fondly remembers being at Broken Hope's comeback show at Maryland Death Fest 13 years ago. It's not usually her type of death metal, but something about that show was extra fun and every now and then when she's feeling ignorant and wants some dumb slammy shit, she may put on Grotesque Blessings. When reading for TBC that's kind of peak “I am feeling dumb and also full of rage”, so she listened to a lot of Broken Hope while reading this. Wagner sure has a theme and he's sticking to it! In addition to our usual barnyard language, today's episode includes gore, guns, kidnapping, sexual assault, general violence, weapons, and - of course - zombies. Have you listened to a brutal slam record recently? It's that. BROKEN HOPE guitarist Jeremy Wagner purchased several pieces of Cliff Burton memorabilia at auction and graciously returned them to Cliff's longtime girlfriend, Corinne Lynn, and the late Metallica bassist's family. The stuff included laminates, demos, family photos, and even t-shirts worn by Cliff. Jeremy tells that story in full here and talks about the impact of Metallica on his life and career. Jared Barbee and Jeremy Wagner of Stygian Sky Media return for part 2 of a special Necrocasticon!
Ever since Black Sabbath named themselves after a horror movie and started writing dark, foreboding songs that buzzed with menace and defiance, fans and creators of hair-raising films and metal made a run into the darkness. In this episode, we dare to peer into the darkest parts of human nature through the lens of metal music and horror. Alice Cooper explains how he invented horror rock and Rob Zombie and Dee Snider talk about their entry into the world of horror moviemaking. Members of Pantera, Metallica, Anthrax, Cannibal Corpse and more describe the inextricable link between metal and horror. FROM THIS EPISODE: Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo says horror movies and extreme metal are outlets for people who don't deny death and accept the pain and tragedy of life. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett celebrates the darkness and gloom of metal music and horror and says guitar playing acts as a form of therapy and saved his life numerous times when he was younger.. Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian explains his love for the catharsis and excitement of metal and horror and considers them to be two sides of the same coin. White Zombie founder and filmmaker Rob Zombie explains how he's been drawn to horror and metal music since he was young. Alice Cooper talks about how he sustained real injuries during his shows' choreographed switchblade fights. Twisted Sister's Dee Snider is baffled by the love his character Captain Howdy in the 1998 horror film Strangeland gets from young women. Film composer and Zombi bass guitarist Steve Moore states he views metal music as a reflection of the political, ecological and social traumas of the ‘90s. Cannibal Corpse drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz says he and his bandmates always sought out the most extreme entertainment they could find, both in film and music. Horror author Jeremy Wagner explains his fascination with horror and death. Backstaged: The Devil in Metal is a production of Diversion Podcasts in association with iHeartRadio. "Please tell me there's a napkin in that bag." "This is going to be a good week to get the interiors washed" Death metal comes to Car Con Carne, as Broken Hope founder/guitarist/lyricist Jeremy Wagner jumps in the front seat for a trip to Tacos Del Norte in the far northwest burbs. Over the course of a long (and sometimes NSFW) conversation, we talk about the farm Jeremy donated to animal rescue, his buying the late Jeff Hanneman's (Slayer) guitars, the secret of death metal vocals ("to the layman on the street... they quickly dismiss it"), the value of "snack hot dogs" and "snack tacos," and what is... the VANOSDOL TACO? Also, we call my friend Chris on the Bluetooth hotline. He's a serious Broken Hope fan, so I thought it would be cool to connect him with Jeremy. And yes, Jeremy's planning on creating the death metal version of "Thriller." Fear not.
Tommy Rogers, lead singer and multi instrumentalist for Between the Buried and Me, guests on the podcast this week. We talk about the challenges and fears of the road, being the father of a young son, bringing his family on tour, how family has changed his writing process, working with the same guys for so long and where BTBAM's latest album Coma Ecliptic fits into the band's legacy (and how it might dictate their future output). We also try and figure out where Jeremy Wagner of Broken Hope got the cash to buy so many of Jeff Hanneman's guitars. Did he have thousands of dollars just laying around? Or is he looking at this as an investment into his future? We also look ahead to next week's "Best of 2015" episode and start the chatter about our favorite records of the year.
