Talkin' Slayer tells the story of Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. After some introduction episodes, this weekly show recaps the history of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant—no, MEANS. After Episode 9, Patreon supporters receive every weekly episode. Talkin' Slayer is written, deeply researched, lightly edited, and mostly rehearsed, with some production value. Episodes start after :60-:90 of intro; no need to skip the first 20 minutes.

Hey, pals. Ferris here. We're not exactly back, but we will be soon. This week, I tell you what's in the immediate future for the podcast. And I tell you about the massive, new, revised, expanded version of the book. Long story short... 1) Next week, I'm seeing the Kerry King band play headlining show. Then I'll drop an episode about it. 2) And shortly after that, we'll be back, with new additions to the book. 3) I TOTALLY (mostly) revised the book that I read from here, Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography... or, How F*kin' Slayer Kicked F*ckin' Ass. Now it's a lot bigger. It has a lot more photos. And it is easier to read. I tell you all about it in the episode. The book is thoroughly expanded, and it is not optional. If you want to buy an autographed copy directly from me, reach out, and we can do that. Directions for that option are in the episode. The new 4th edition of Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography... is available in four forms. Here's what they are, with links to them. They are at a reduced price for a limited time: $9.99 (ebook), $19.66 (short version), $26.66 (uncut ALL version), and $36.66 (oversize coffee table edition). 1) The Uncut Standard Version: It is... Paperback, 6x9”, 639 pages, includes a full index and works cited / bibliography section, plus annotated endnotes (with new Easter eggs), and 60 black & white photos & 11 illustrations. 500 pages of story, plus 100 pages of reference material. I'm not f*cking around. This one is the peak, biggest, All-est version of the current edition, with the most pages and photos. It has all the material from the previous versions, and then A WHOLE METRIC SH*T-TON MORE. The works cited is a trendy thing: It's one big list of all the different items I used in my research -- articles, videos, books, everything. GET IT HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Slayer-66-Biography-Post-Reunion-RE-REMASTERED/dp/B0DS6B1WFD/ 2) The Oversize Version. This monster paperback is 8.5x11”, 580 pages, and larger type. The format has size limits, so omits the works cited section and a few of the less awesome photos. It includes 50 b&w photos. The full real content is there. The only real difference is the works cited... and all that info is in the endnotes / citations amyway. GET IT HERE: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0997597992 3) The ebook has no index, but features two additional appendices and mostly color photos. Like we said, if you can deal with the zip files and downloading, I'll give you that free. GET IT HERE: https://www.amazon.com/Slayer-66-Biography-POST-REUNION-RE-REMASTERED-ebook/dp/B0DRYXQ36T ALSO... 4) The paperback 6x9” Long Story Short… and Cheaper Version runs 400 pages. It has full research citations, and most b&w photos, but no appendices, index or standalone redundant works cited section. Some people want to read a book, but they'll [gripe] about the book being too long; I guess they're still afraid their 80 year old English teacher Mrs. McGinty is gonna smack 'em on the ear if they skim around or skip some pages. This Short & Cheap version cuts a lot of important historical context and commentary. And it concentrates on the Slayer story as it unfolds. It's missing a ton of good stuff. HEY YINZ! Here's some news, plus a quick recap of Slayer's second and final 2024 reunion show at California's Aftershock fest. Some links follow. This is another different kind of episode. And it's short. Here's the important stuff, moreso than the episode itself: DEEZ NOTES -- UPDDATED (Two Ds for a Double Dose of Slayage): News story about the Slayer fan who sustained fatal injuries at the Chicago Fest:https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/10/08/family-of-man-who-died-after-riot-fest-raising-money-for-services-and-seeking-answers/ GoFundMe for his family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aid-for-hospital-recovery-journey Single video of the entire Aftershock set. Today's topic is Slayer and branding. Ferris talks about what Slayer means, and what it's worth — to the band, to brands, and to us fans. This is some Thrash 101 talk, but you get advanced metrics & rock theory, too. Do you wear the mark? Who sells more T-shirts... Slayer, the [Rolling] Stones, the Foo Fighters, or Metallica? Do the Foo Fighters rock or suck? How is Reign in Blood selling these days? Has the thrashiest Big Four Thrash B[r]and sold out? We look at some numbers and render judgment. Right before Slayer return for their hotly anticipated reunion shows and sell a barge load of T-shirts, the most high-profile Slayer product is… a series of cooler and refrigeration products with Slayer's name, logo, and artwork on them. Does this partnership enterprise make sense? Business & branding writer Cheryl Wischover interviewed Ferris for her article “Slayer Sells Out?", for the Whatever Nevermind Substack. Click here to read it. Longtime listeners may recognize some of tonight's points. For newcomers, the show covers some basic Slayer & heavy metal 101. But this week also features new original research, thoughts, and commentary on our metal heroes — and what it takes to make a dollar and a cent in the music game in 2024. This is another unusual episode. Talkin' Slayer is generally a weekly podcast. And it is mostly about the history of the band, based on original interviews and extensive archival research. Ferris usually reads a chapter or two or three from his book Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, which has a ton of sick photos and graphics, and is cheap online. So is the other book he wrote about the band, which is an entire freakin' book about Reign in Blood. It's not expensive. People like it. Talkin' Slayer will return next week, with a report from Slayer's first reunion show at Chicago's RiotFest. May 2, 2013... a day that will live in infamy. Talkin' Slayer is back, to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Jeff Hanneman's untimely, shocking demise. One of the listeners asked if Jeff actively retreated from his dominant creative role in the band, following the disappointing reception of 1998's Diabolus in Musica. That's a good question. So we get into it, using some old facts and new statistics. The part of the podcast where author D.X. Ferris reads his Slayer band biography is over. For now. But stay tuned... Slayer is back. And Kerry King's solo album and tour about are nearly ready to go. So you'll have things you want to talk about. And I will too. Over 100,000 fans liked the first post. That initial post soon disappeared. The second Trump photo stands at an untitled Instagram post, on the official Slayer account, @slayerbandofficial, 24 January 2017, which identified it as from being from Tom: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPqUjICAi8d/ Araya explained, “I thought it was funny,” followed by language with a conservative bent: “I was amazed at the comments about the picture. Some positive. Some negative. More amazing was in 2 hours there was 10,000 likes. I never would have guessed that there where so many snowflakes commenting their distaste for the new president. Woke up the next morning and found someone had deleted the post. Can someone please explain why?” This quotation features Araya's post with modified grammar and punctuation, for clarity and courtesy. Keep in mind: In Slayer's 1996 cover of 80s punk nugget “Superficial Love,” Tom changed an anti-Reagan line to “President Clinton can suck my motherf@ckin' d!ck” — which he's allowed to do. And while I'm defending his right to voice his opinions, let's also be clear: I don't agree. Which doesn't matter.
Another long one. It's a full hour. Three topics this week: 1) A book report about Tom's sister's history of her family -- mostly her dad and brother. 2) An annotated list of some other Slayer-related material. And 3) a deep meditation on the pagan significance of the Slayer Leprechaun. Seriously. Two weeks ago: We looked at the beginning of Slayer's life after Jeff. Host D.X. Ferris is an award-winning writer. He has worked for Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, The AV Club, and Decibel magazine. He is a fan. He has opinions. He is the author of something like nine books, depending how you count them. Two are about Slayer. The first one is an entire book about the classic thrash album Reign in Blood, which is part of the fairly prestigious 33 1/3 book series. His bigger Slayer book, though, is the 2023 update of the full-on band biography "Slayer 66 & 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, POSTMORTEM Edition." (This is the third edition; it was previously known as "Slayer 66 & 2/3: The Jeff and Dave Years...."). And that book is mostly what he'll be talking about when we're talkin' Slayer. Most episodes are audio adaptations of chapters from that book. Some have original and/or bonus material. Thank you for checking it out. Learn more at... Welcome to Talkin' Slayer: A Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook. This is Episode 02: Jeff Hanneman: The Legend, the Myth, the Man. ps. Albert Cuellar RIP. Talkin' Slayer is the first podcast dedicated to Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. Today's topic is the late, great Jeff Hanneman. Again. And we belatedly note the passing of Slayer album artist Albert Cuellar. Hanneman passed away, very unexpectedly, ten years ago last week. On the previous episode, we talked about his role in the band. This week, we talk about about the person. Before we do that, we note the passing of Albert Cuellar, the accomplished artist who collaborated with Slayer to create the covers for Live Undead and Hell Awaits. Next week, we'll start to look at Slayer's place in the all-time pantheon of heavy metal and rock & roll in general. After some introductory episodes, Talkin' Slayer tells the story of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant — no, MEANS. Welcome to Talkin' Slayer: A Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook. This is Episode 01: Jeff Hanneman Made the Difference. Talkin' Slayer is the first podcast dedicated to Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. Today's topic is the late, great Jeff Hanneman. Hanneman passed away, very unexpectedly, ten years ago this week: May 2, 2013. Hanneman was Slayer's co-lead guitarist, its best lyricist, its second-best singer, probably its second-best percussionist, and — by all accounts — its heart and soul. This episode takes a look at how he generally affected the band's career, art, and trajectory. Next week, we'll look at the intensely private shredder's life and personality. After some introductory episodes, Talkin' Slayer tells the story of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant — no, MEANS.
