The David Ellefson Show is powered by ADV. In Ear Monitors Designed for Musicians, Born In New York!Gary Holt dives into the creative zone, sharing how early mornings fuel his lyric writing as Exodus wraps up recording not one, but two full albums packed with killer material. The band's been riding high with special “Bonded by Blood” anniversary shows, sold-out crowds, and more touring on the horizon. Holt gets real about the physical toll of performing, past survival jobs, and how aging in thrash metal means pushing through pain for the love of the stage. He reflects on the gritty bond between bands like Exodus, Slayer, and Megadeth, built on decades of shared sweat, chaos, and rebellion. In a wide-ranging chat, Holt talks about Exodus outshining Metallica at a pivotal early show and how Kirk Hammett's departure gave him creative freedom—though he admits he probably wouldn't have joined Metallica himself. He opens up about stepping into Slayer, finding his own voice while honoring Jeff Hanneman's legacy, and shares wild stories from the road, from gearhead antics to “sober” thrash days. There's raw nostalgia in the memories of early Bay Area chaos, Megadeth's formation, and label battles with Combat and Capitol Records. Holt caps it off by touching on the realities of being a working musician—where touring, merch, and hustle still fuel the fire.Follow ADV. on Instagram: @adv.sound (https://www.instagram.com/adv.sound)Join the Patreon for early access to episodes and Q and A's with the hosts www.patreon.com/tdesFor David Ellefson Stage Played Basses and Merch www.ellefsonemporium.comFollow David on Social Medialinker.ee/davidellefsonFollow Joshua on Social Medialinker.ee/talktoomeypodcast #garyholt #metal #megadeth #slayer #metallica #exodus

Albums like Bonded by Blood, Fabulous Disaster, and Tempo of the Damned solidified Exodus as a cornerstone of the genre. In 2011, Holt was asked to step in for Slayer's Jeff Hanneman, initially as a temporary replacement but eventually becoming a full-time touring guitarist. He remained with Slayer until their final tour in 2019& currennt reunion onr offs, playing a key role in maintaining the band's brutal live energy and contributing to their final studio album, Repentless. Balancing two of thrash metal's most legendary bands, Holt's influence on the genre is undeniable. In this conversation, Holt reflects on his decades in thrash, the relentless energy of playing with Slayer, and the legacy of Exodus. Slayer guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman formed the original searing 6-string front line of the most brutal band in the land. Together, they created an aggressive mood of malcontent with high-velocity thrash riffs and screeching solos that'll slice your speaker cones. The only way to create a band more brutal than Slayer would be to animate them, and that's exactly what Metalocalypse (and Home Movies) creator Brendon Small did. From his first listen, Small has been a lifetime devotee and thrash-metal expert, so we invited him to help us break down what makes Slayer so great. Together, we dissect King and Hanneman's guitar styles and list their angriest, most brutal songs, as well as those that create a mood of general horribleness.Use code EMG100 for 15% off at checkout at emgpickups.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. Back in December, I sat down with the one and only Gary Holt. Best known for being the main fiddle player in Exodus. He also had a massive stint in Slayer taking over stage right duties for Jeff Hanneman. We got to hangout a ton while on tour together a few months back and it was an absolute pleasure!

In this episode we travel south of heaven where Hell awaits to spend seasons in the abyss and reign in blood with our undisputed attitude that God hates us all in the Chri$t illusion. Without divine intervention we see a world painted blood in repentless diabolus musica and tell the story of Slayer's debut album, Show No Mercy. In 1981 Huntington Park California guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman met at an audition and realised they were into the same stuff. Living only just around the corner was like-minded bass player and singer Tom Araya. All they needed to create the loudest, heaviest, fastest and most satany band ever was a double kickarse drummer. Then suddenly there was a knock at Kerry King's door. 16 year old Dave Lombardo had been told there was another long haired disreputable type in the area. So the plucky, pizza delivery man went and introduced himself. The original, the classic and the most persistent line up was complete. We will pick up the story there and tell you how that debut album came to be. Coop and Radulich are back to review the latest from SLAYER!!!!!Repentless is the twelfth and final studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer, released on September 11, 2015. This is the band's only album recorded without guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died from liver cirrhosis in 2013 and was replaced by Gary Holt, and the first to feature drummer Paul Bostaph since God Hates Us All (2001). Repentless is also the only album the band released on Nuclear Blast and was produced by Terry Date, replacing Rick Rubin after twenty-nine years and nine studio albums as their producer or executive producer. The six-year gap between World Painted Blood (2009) and Repentless was the longest between two Slayer albums in their career, and it would be the band's last studio album before disbanding in 2019, following the conclusion of their final world tour.Three singles were released from the album: "Repentless," "You Against You" and "Pride in Prejudice". The album debuted at no. 4 on the Billboard 200, the highest-charting debut from the band in its native country. It also topped the chart in Germany and featured in the top ten of almost twenty charts around the world. It received generally positive reviews from critics.Original Airdate 9/17/2015Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulich

I'm Jay Ingersoll, and with me is the unwavering sentinel of metal knowledge, Nick Modd. Today, we embark on a two-part odyssey through the hallowed halls of metal history, as we delve into the iconic biography of one of the most influential bands ever - Slayer. Joining us as a guest host is the formidable metal connoisseur, Jon Rohn. *An Overture to Chaos: Slayer's Genesis* In this first installment of our two-part Slayer series, we unravel the early days of the band that would go on to redefine the very essence of heavy metal. Slayer's origins are shrouded in the smog of Southern California, where four young musicians, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Tom Araya, and Dave Lombardo, united to create a sound that would become synonymous with darkness, speed, and ferocity. We journey through their humble beginnings, the formation of the band, and the influences that fueled their infernal creativity. *Pioneering the Unholy Trinity: Slayer and Extreme Metal* Slayer's emergence on the scene marked a watershed moment in the history of music. We dissect how Slayer's relentless aggression and lyrical themes catapulted them to the forefront of the burgeoning extreme metal genre. From the raw brutality of their debut album "Show No Mercy" to the seismic impact of "Hell Awaits," we delve into the albums that set the stage for their reign of blood. *A Symphony of Horror: Slayer's Dark Artistry* The imagery and lyrical content of Slayer have long been a subject of fascination and controversy. We explore the band's penchant for exploring dark themes, the influence of horror movies and literature on their music, and the fervor with which they embraced the macabre. Slayer's ability to create an atmosphere of dread and chaos set them apart as true masters of the dark arts. *The Thrash Titans: Slayer's Signature Sound* Few bands have achieved the level of musical prowess and intensity that Slayer has. We dissect the components of their signature sound, from Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's searing guitar work to the relentless rhythm section of Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo. The intricate guitar solos, blistering drum fills, and Tom Araya's signature roar all played a role in forging Slayer's sonic identity. In this episode, we have the privilege of being joined by a guest host, Jon Rohn, a metal aficionado with a deep appreciation for Slayer's impact on the genre. Jon brings his unique perspective to the discussion, adding depth and insight to the band's biography and their role in shaping the metal landscape. Welcome to Talkin' Slayer: A Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook. This is Episode 02: Jeff Hanneman: The Legend, the Myth, the Man. ps. Albert Cuellar RIP. Talkin' Slayer is the first podcast dedicated to Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. Today's topic is the late, great Jeff Hanneman. Again. And we belatedly note the passing of Slayer album artist Albert Cuellar. Hanneman passed away, very unexpectedly, ten years ago last week. On the previous episode, we talked about his role in the band. This week, we talk about about the person. Before we do that, we note the passing of Albert Cuellar, the accomplished artist who collaborated with Slayer to create the covers for Live Undead and Hell Awaits. Next week, we'll start to look at Slayer's place in the all-time pantheon of heavy metal and rock & roll in general. After some introductory episodes, Talkin' Slayer tells the story of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant — no, MEANS. After Episode Nine, Patreon supporters receive every weekly episode. Free listeners get every other episode, every other week. Learn more at Patreon.com/SlayerBook. Every week, host D.X. Welcome to Talkin' Slayer: A Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook. This is Episode 01: Jeff Hanneman Made the Difference. Talkin' Slayer is the first podcast dedicated to Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. Today's topic is the late, great Jeff Hanneman. Hanneman passed away, very unexpectedly, ten years ago this week: May 2, 2013. Hanneman was Slayer's co-lead guitarist, its best lyricist, its second-best singer, probably its second-best percussionist, and — by all accounts — its heart and soul. This episode takes a look at how he generally affected the band's career, art, and trajectory. Next week, we'll look at the intensely private shredder's life and personality. Robert Cooper and Mark Radulich look back the career of thrash metal kings, Slayer!Slayer was an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California. The band was formed in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, drummer Dave Lombardo and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Slayer's fast and aggressive musical style made them one of the "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Slayer's final lineup comprised Araya, King, drummer Paul Bostaph (who replaced Lombardo in 1992 and again in 2013) and guitarist Gary Holt (who replaced Hanneman in 2011). Drummer Jon Dette was also a member of the band. This episode originally aired 1/14/14.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things: https://linktr.ee/markkind76 also snapchat: markkind76 FB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSW Tiktok: @markradulich twitter: @MarkRadulich

I chose Persona Non Grata by Exodus, as it is honestly one of my new favorite albums of all time. It is such a strong and bludgeoning return since the return of Steve "Zetro" Souza and the release of "Blood In, Blood Out" in 2014.  After significant delay due to Gary Holt stepping into the late Jeff Hanneman's shoes of Slayer and of course the pandemic, the album is absolute sonic and thrash perfection. Exodus has always been one to capture the signs of the times, encapsulate major occurrences and tackle subject matter deemed too dark for many others, always to great effect. What makes Exodus great and the Thrash titans they always have been is on full display on this record. From Persona Non Grata to Antiseed, this record fucking slams and is a MUST listen for any fan of Exodus or the Thrash genre as a whole.  Hails! - Matthew Darrow

This week we resume the narrative of Night Demon's early days.  We pick up the story in the summer of 2013.  Jarvis remains extremely active with the Heartbeats, who release a punk covers EP and embark on their most ambitious tour.  But he longs for a band situation and is nostalgic for the heavy metal of his youth, so he decides to make Night Demon his top priority.  In the meantime, Night Demon is taking off.  The band has a string of successful shows in California in the summer of 2013, winning over new fans at every turn.  The self-titled EP finally receives a physical release in vinyl, CD and cassette formats, with an uptick in press inquiries, reviews and interviews.  The band conducts its first proper photo shoot.  The summer shows yield a contact with a pivotal figure in Night Demon history, and also a near-death experience providing lyrical fodder for "Run for Your Life."  Jarvis works diligently in the trenches to promote Night Demon via telephone calls and in-person visits to record stores to convince them to stock the EP.  Doing things the old-school way in the new world pays dividends.Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. The Crown guitarist Marko Tervonen is our guest this week. We discuss the band's upcoming album, Royal Destroyer, and how their previous one, Cobra Speed Venom, was a comeback album of sorts, why having an outside producer this time around was helpful, writing a tribute song to late Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman, and how the band's new lineup has given them a new dynamic and added momentum. Marko also tells us how his son finds younger bands that still inspire him, shares some memories of the Swedish metal scene in the '90s when every band seemed to inspire one another, and reveals which concert he regrets missing out on during the explosion of the Swedish metal scene. Petar, Brandon, and Sylvia talk about the lawsuit brought on Attila's Chris Fronzak by two security guards he attacked at a show, our thoughts on the comments about encores by Korn's Brian “Head” Welch, and our vote for our favorite Ozzy Osbourne guitar player. He ha an extensive solo catalogue as well, including his latest metal installment Inverted Grasp of Balance. In our interview we talk about his whole career, from starting out in East Texas to becoming the King of LA (crowned by us), his ability to work with all walks of life, what it's like to play both stadiums and small clubs, teaching as an outlet for expression (as well as an income stream), and we try to find out more about his personal life. We also talk to DX Ferris, author of the definitive biography on Slayer's Reign in Blood, to commemorate the 30th birthday of the album. On October 7th, 1986, metal changed forever, and DX enlightens us on some of the huge misconceptions about the record, what really spurred the change from longer songs to a shorter, more polished attack, how this album may not be their best-selling, and more (you'll get the rest in a detailed post later this week on MS). DX dispels myths about producer Rick Rubin's influence on Reign in Blood's songs as well as late guitarist Jeff Hanneman's contributions. Mind = blown. We also try and figure out where Jeremy Wagner of Broken Hope got the cash to buy so many of Jeff Hanneman's guitars. Did he have thousands of dollars just laying around? Or is he looking at this as an investment into his future? We also look ahead to next week's "Best of 2015" episode and start the chatter about our favorite records of the year. So much good stuff! The Garage Hour goons dig in to the slobbering populist US media and slobbering Ismalic fundamentalists, the importance of where you bury your bodies (and the fancy lead-weighted coffins made for the Baader-Meinhof gang), and a minor comparison of Marines and Chicken of the Sea by the show's resident Master Guns, .45 Phil. It's not all fun and games, though - most of this is even better.  There's a sporty Garage Hour sendup for Slayer string-maven Jeff Hanneman, plus a less reverent flamejob for Communist State of CA's most recent attempts at ignoring the Second Amendment.  Beyond that, well, it's the Garage Hour, so just like cohosts Agent Aya, Crag Maxwell, .45 Phil and Barrister Hilton - with Master of Disaster Justin Fort - you can count on cars, trucks, beers and guns, tanks and sasquatches, the Venture Bros and the Blues Brothers, and that's just for an appetizer.  This is is gearhead-talk radio at its finest.

2013 has been an annus horribilis for thrash metal legends Slayer. In February, Slayer parted ways with longtime drummer Dave Lombardo for the third and likely final time. In May, guitarist Jeff Hanneman died of alcohol-related cirrhosis, after being sidelined for better than two years for a necrotic spider bite. As these events unfolded, journalist D.X. Ferris was hard at work on his latest book on the band, Slayer 66 2/3: The Jeff & Dave Years (6623 Press, 2013). It examines Slayer’s origins and development over the past thirty years and makes a persuasive case for Slayer’s musical and cultural influence. Ferris argues, “Slayer remains the all-time quintessential heavy metal band. And metal, more than ever, is significant. The genre has established itself as a permanent part of popular culture. And Slayer are metal’s pre-eminent prophets of rage.” Drawing on a wide and deep pool of source material, including the author’s own interviews with band members, Slayer 66 2/3 is likely to become the definitive history of this seminal heavy metal band. For his part, Ferris probably knows more about the band than anyone outside of its inner circle. Take a listen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

By the fall of 1986, the Los Angeles heavy metal band Slayer had two solid but unspectacular records, 1984’s Haunting the Chapel and 1985’s Hell Awaits, to their name. Meanwhile, producer Rick Rubin had started a record company, Def Jam, in his dorm room in NYU, and after a handful of successful rap releases, was on the lookout for new talent for his label. In a New York City nightclub, he found it in Slayer. D.X. Ferris, in his taut and entertaining 33 1/3 series bookReign in Blood, explains how this seemingly incongruous paring of a rap guru and four speed-metal merchants ended up making rock history with their 1986 thrash-metal release Reign in Blood. Rubin, whose genius has always resided in his ability to help artists capture the essence of their greatness, found the band’s lengthy, more traditional heavy metal songs unappealing. What he liked, Ferris argues, was the faster, heavier, and aggressive aspects of Slayer’s material. This made him a perfect partner for the band’s late guitarist, Jeff Hanneman, who loved hardcore punk rock almost as much as he loved heavy metal. The resulting album, Ferris maintains, is “the gold standard for extreme heavy metal.” The LP’s ten songs are played with military precision and at a frenzied pace. And its lyrical themes are nothing if not disturbing: serial killers, witches burned at the stake, pandemics, the fall of Heaven, and perhaps most extreme of all, a meditation on Nazi sadist Josef Mengele, Auschwitz’s depraved “Angel of Death.” This last song, as Ferris shows, stirred charges of anti-Semitism and encouraged CBS Records to back away from its deal to distribute the LP. By drawing on interviews with everyone from members of Slayer to fans, the witty and engaging Ferris makes a convincing case for the album’s significance and its continuing influence in the world of heavy metal. We also discussed Dave Mustaine discussing Gigantour, Jeff Hanneman's death, Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn and the definition of otters.

Sid couldn't make it to this Cinco De Mayo edition of the Metal Injection Livecast, but the treturous three made it through. Noa's voice was shot from partying to hard the night before so she sounded like Mindy Meyer. Rob talked about his experiences at the Revolver Golden Gods, including interviewing Metallica, and VIP room stories. We also discussed a questionable online advice column. Here is this week, Jeff Hanneman-tribute all Slayer playlist: Slayer – Postmortem Slayer – Raining Blood Decapitated – Mandatory Suicide Listen to the Metal Injection Livecast on Stitcher or on iTunes (please leave a rating/review as well). May First Five Episode 5.0 (The Unsigned Countdown) Written by: Jason Roeseke We're back! I know I know. How lost you must have felt for the last week. I hope that our bonus episode at least maintained you. Believe me I felt just as lost as you, but before depression sets in. Before those thoughts of rage that have building up inside of you explode like a madness in to every vein within you. We are back. We bring to you another great list of Unsigned and Independent R.A.M.P artists, musicians, and bands. These soldiers stand here on the front line. No spotlight, No screaming wet panty wearing fans. No none of that. These brave and worthy warriors are here for glory. These bands are her for honor. Yes these Soldiers are here for us. Leading the charge is no easy task, and kicking off a month like May, kicking off The Unsigned Countdowns first ever Halfway point, and kick starting your ass is what we asked of our first band. @AngelFlayer Joined Our ranks by simply submitting their track Crown of Thorns to our The Unsigned Countdown Submission Portal. Just like so many others have. With a driving beat, slicing guitars, and a voice that sounds like pure gravel this band bleeds your earballs dry. Fantastic song writing is abundant in this group of Metal gods, and once you get hit by this sound, you will have no choice but to join their growing group of fans. Then before you can pick your chin up off of your floor the second wave of Sound smashes into you. @Jeff-Fiorentino comes at us with guitar strings blazing and helps convert some masses with his track Fake Jane Levys. . This one will send you scrambling for your old Van Halen records for sure. While it might only be an instrumental. It's obvious that there is some massive talent coming right at us. @Soundblade brings us back to the days of metal with their thrashing masterpiece Wingless flight, and @Mamacecile cracks the code next, leaving us all shivering like cold wet babies with their track Tell Me Your Fears. While it's been said that this band gives birth to many mischievous creatures, there will be no escaping this one. Let this track wrap it's way around your soul, and bury it's way deep into your brain. Finally just before you pass out from blood loss @Bazooka-Zoo wraps you tightly in it's warm blanket of sound. Wicked ways will put your mind at ease, and the relief should be immediate. Soothing soulful tones will dance around in mid air for you, and you will not be the same once they are done toying with your imagination. Thank you for listening to The Unsigned Countdown. Please support these Unsigned and Independent artists, musicians, and bands because thats what this project is all about.
