Send us a textIn this episode of The Day's Grimm Podcast, hosts Brian Michael Day and Thomas Grimm sit down with Nashville-based Soul/Funk/Blues artist Billy Ray Wallace.Billy Ray takes us on his journey from growing up in the small town of Lynnville, Indiana, to cutting his teeth in the competitive Nashville music scene. We dive deep into his transition from metal bands to mastering the soulful sounds inspired by legends like Stevie Wonder and John Mayer. TikTok has been a major talking point online recently, with the potential ban - or not - in the U.S. so this week Moose and Dews explore the value of the platform to bands, asking several questions… Why would bands use the platform? Is it worth their time, or would that time be better used on other things? If so, what things? Are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X and YouTube viable options? They also explore the evolving landscape of the music industry, focusing on the shifting roles of gatekeepers and influencers, the impact of the internet, and the nature of content creation in the age of controversy and rage-bait. They also realise - via plague-ridden 19th Century influencers - that times, technology and platforms may have changed, but people have not. They also pay tribute to the late John Sykes, discuss new music from As December Falls and One Morning Left, and make themselves feel old by discussing a few albums having their silver anniversaries (25 YEARS?! Hybrid Theory, anyone?) in 2025. It is their first release with guitarist John 5, who replaced Mick Mars following his retirement from the band in October 2022.On April 19, 2023, Mötley Crüe announced that they had begun working on new music with record producer Bob Rock. Bassist Nikki Sixx released a statement a month later, stating that it had finished production and had begun mixing the new material. In July 2023, frontman Vince Neil confirmed that the band recorded three brand new songs. Two months later, guitarist John 5 confirmed the title of a new song as "Dogs of War", and also revealed that the band had recorded a cover of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" by Beastie Boys.On April 23, 2024, it was announced that Mötley Crüe had signed a deal with Big Machine Records, and three days later the band released "Dogs of War", their first song in five years and their first with John 5. Neil told Billboard that same month that additional music from Mötley Crüe could be released by the end of 2024 or in 2025, but also stated that new material could result in "a few songs here, a few songs there" rather than a full-length album. Drummer Tommy Lee did not rule out releasing a new Mötley Crüe album, but stated that "recording and writing some stuff that you're feeling right at the moment and releasing it is, for us, a lot more a lot more fun and sort of a time stamp of where we're at right now." Sixx said that the band had recorded two other new singles that were ready to be released. On August 23, 2024, Mötley Crüe released their cover version of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" as a single, and announced on the same day that a new EP, titled Cancelled, would be released on October 4.All of that plus video reviews of Motley Crue The Dirt, Motley Crue Dogs of War, Rammstein - Sonne, OZZY OSBOURNE - Shot In The Dark and Morbid Angel - God of Emptiness. All of that plus a discussion of Clown Core!Clown Core (stylized as ClownC0re) is an American musical duo. It is composed of two anonymous artists who wear clown masks, speculated to be drummer Louis Cole of the indietronica/jazzfunk band Knower and Sam Gendel, a saxophonist and frequent Cole collaborator. Their eponymous album Clown Core was released in 2010. The album Toilet followed eight years later. Their album Van was released in 2020. The EP 1234 released in 2021. This week's guest is James Evans, the co-founder and CEO of CommandBar, a user assistance software company that powers chat and proactive help interfaces for hundreds of software businesses and millions of end users. Before CommandBar, he worked in private equity investing at Bain Capital and studied CS at Princeton. Here's a summary of the key points from the interview with James Evans on the Uncharted podcast: Introduction & Background: James Evans is the founder of Command Bar, and he shares an interesting fact about his past: he played bass in a heavy metal band in high school. He has an impressive educational and professional background, including attending Princeton and working at Bain before founding his company. Family and Personal Drive: James mentions his parents are immigrants (his mother from Iran and his father from the UK) and both are business school professors. He didn't feel typical immigrant pressure to succeed but did feel a self-imposed pressure to do something meaningful as a founder, influenced by his upbringing and his parents' careers. Path to Entrepreneurship: James's first job was in finance, but he always aspired to be a founder. His first startup was an early-stage crypto company, which didn't succeed, leading him to start Command Bar. He emphasizes the importance of choosing to work on something meaningful rather than starting a company for the sake of it. Challenges and Pivots: James talks about the challenges of knowing when to pivot or move on from a project. He shares his experience pivoting from his first startup to Command Bar and later adjusting Command Bar's strategy post-Series A funding. He advises founders to be adaptable and willing to reassess their strategies, even after raising funds. Mindset and Resilience: James discusses the importance of resilience and the inevitability of facing highs and lows as a founder. He notes that experiences that seem devastating in the moment often feel less significant over time. He emphasizes that the only fatal mistakes in a startup are giving up or running out of money. Command Bar's Market Position: Command Bar operates in two categories: B2B chatbots and digital adoption tools, and they are exploring the creation of a new category called "user-assisted software." James highlights the balance between creating new categories and fitting into existing markets for buyer recognition. Sales and Enablement: The company focuses on empathy and genuine curiosity in sales, prioritizing understanding customers' problems over simply selling products. James discusses the challenges of sales enablement in a multi-product context and the importance of storytelling in sales. Advice to Young Entrepreneurs: James advises making decisions quickly and not overthinking minor details. He believes the best action is often to make a decision and move on rather than getting stuck in analysis. Conclusion: The host and James discuss the importance of taking decisive action and the value of having conversations with more experienced entrepreneurs to avoid getting stuck in decision-making. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/uncharted1/support
