Our conversation centers around learning about the school for those who have never heard of it.The folk school has been a fixture of the local area for almost a century, and in addition to providing hand-on learning to the nearby communities, it has also been actively involved in preserving and recording the heritage of the local area. They are affectionately called Chatter and Chitter on their mother’s popular Appalachian blog Blind Pig & the Acorn.The girls enjoyed a musical influence literally from their arrival home from the hospital. Jerry Wilson, their grandfather, who they call Pap, was a musical legend in their neck of the woods.Jerry performed for many years as part of The Wilson Brothers. The duo performed gospel music in the polished high harmonies of the classic brother duet style. They performed at churches, festivals, homecomings, and benefits throughout the south. Over the years they won many awards including the 1998 North Carolina Heritage Award. They were also featured in publications such as “The Old-Time Herald”.The girls often tell the story of laying in their bedroom floor with ears pressed tightly to the floor to hear the sounds of music flowing up from the basement as Pap and his band practiced. The family band evolved into Pap, Paul (Pap’s youngest son and the girls’ uncle), Tipper (Pap’s only daughter and the girls’ mother), Ben and Mark (sons of Pap’s oldest son Steve and cousins of the girls’), and Corie and Katie. In the beginning, the twins could hardly be tied down to sing a song or two with the group before they ran off to play. But as time passed, each girl picked up her own instrument and learned the art of singing harmony from Pap and Paul. These days, The Pressley Girls, Paul, and Tipper are making the music they were raised on and ensuring the tradition of Appalachian music is continued.

Recorded September 17, 2020. Weaver, spinner, and natural dyer Cassie Dickson guides us through her vast experience with fibers and textiles. Cassie mostly works with flax linen; growing, processing and using the flax plant, but also has maintained silkworms for many years. She was employed full time in the public school system for many years, which allowed her to continue her interest in weaving along with the balance created by having a steady income. At the western end of North Carolina, Cherokee County saw one of the state's first confirmed case s of COVID-19. Here's how local officials responded to the case: When the first diagnosis of COVID-19 in Cherokee County was announced only a few facts were shared. It was a woman visiting from New York . She didn't have any symptoms until after she came to North Carolina. And she had been to a contra dance at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown . "I mean I think that has been the biggest challenge to this - it's the unknown." That's Jerry Jackson, the folk school's directo r . It's the oldest folk school in the country and has almost 6,000 visitors per year. He explains that the contra dances are important events that are held once a month. "It's one of the largest ways that we engage with the community and the community comes into the folk school," says Johnson. Jackson says within hours of the confirmation that the woman at the dance had COVID-19 , his staff was on the phone
I'm Matt Bush with BPR News and I'm joined by our own Lilly Knoepp who has been reporting on COVID-19 cases in the westernmost counties in North Carolina. She joins us from her office in Sylva. And she has joined us today to talk about one particular event that has caused a lot of the cases in the westernmost counties. So the two westernmost counties are Cherokee and Clay counties. A lot of the cases COVID-19 that have been reported and confirmed in those counties are tied to an event at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. So take us through how this all weaves together with all of these COVID-19 cases that have been confirmed. At the John C. Campbell Folk school held a contra and square dance on March 10th. And someone from New York came to Cherokee County for that event. And after they had been in the county for awhile and attended dance they started exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 and tested positive for COVID-19. Confession: I have never even tried embroidery. I’ve done some crocheting when I was younger. Took up knitting when I was older, but I have never gotten the hang of working with a needle and thread. The closest was sewing lessons, but all I made was an apron and I was done. The pinnacle of my needle and thread work is being able to sew a button on a shirt really, really good (I mean, like, that button is never coming off again). I have always loved artisan crafts and admire the skill involved in producing a functional work of art by a master. A friend introduced me to the John C. Campbell Folk School and I love to flip through their catalog of classes each year, but always figured I just don’t have the skills necessary to master any of these. Recently though, I’ve become intrigued by Temari balls. I had no idea of their connection to the art of needlecraft until I visited the Embroidery Museum in Louisville, Kentucky when Gwen shared with me how Temari balls were her gateway into the art of embroidery and needlecraft. Sitting down the Gwen Nelson, past president of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America (EGA) and Cynthia Welch, EGA Administrator, opened my eyes to the beautiful world of embroidery and needlecraft. The EGA operates the Embroidery Museum, which is both a museum and the headquarters of EGA. The museum is small, and when you enter, you feel like you’re walking into a private art gallery. And after you listen to this episode, I think you’ll agree that the amazing work and creativity by the embroiderer’s in this collection showcase how what started as a functional craft can be transformed into art. Museum Highlights: Doll House – created by multiple members of EGA, this is the pentultimate doll house. The “tiniest” details are embroidered into the furnishings – from the EGA logo in the chair cushion to the A-B-C sampler on the wall. Harold Gordon Band Sampler – featuring one of the “men of EGA” Harold Gordon’s love of embroidery started in 1944, wounded and lying in a hospital bed. A Red Cross nurse brought in some embroidery for patients to do (maybe to keep them quiet?). In his later years, while visiting his wife in the hospital everyday, Harold re-awakened his love of embroidery and created this sampler. Note his 3-ring binder that were filled with this practice stitches. Since samplers were considered practice pieces, who knew you had to practice before the practice? Blackwork – a type of running, open stitch where the back should look the same as the front, blackwork is shown in this band sampler (although this is using blue thread). There is also red work (red thread on white fabric) and white work (white thread on white fabric). This is just the beginning of the wide variety of stitches and techniques used throughout the years in embroidery. Muriel Baker “Stumpwork” – stumpwork is a raised form of embroidery where stitched figures are raised from the surface resulting in a 3-D raised effect. This piece shows that effect in both the figures of the man and woman in the design. Lucy Chase Canvas – dated to 1834, Lucy was 8-years-old when she completed this embroidery canvas. Lucy’s granddaugheter donated this piece to the museum. 8 years old -- are you kidding me? The details and shading in this piece is amazing. What was I doing at 8 years old? Probably riding my bike, reading, and just generally goofing off. Certainly not creating works of art. Lucy Chase Canvas – dated to 1834, Lucy was 8-years-old when she completed this embroidery canvas. Lucy’s granddaugheter donated this piece to the museum. 8 years old -- are you kidding me? The details and shading in this piece is amazing. What was I doing at 8 years old? Probably riding my bike, reading, and just generally goofing off. Certainly not creating works of art. Hunting Scene – this silk thread in this 1820 hunting scene from Austria brings a sheen to the piece and is an example of surface embroidery where the threads are stitched on top of the fabric or canvas instead of through it. The detail in this hunting scene is fantastic – you could almost feel the hair on the horse and the delicate wings of the butterfly. Crewelwork – created by Margaret Parshall, first president of EGA, in the 1940’s, this is an example of crewel work. I really liked the look of this piece. A beautiful smoky blue color, this piece is also referred to as the Jacobean style, which is a type of embroidery using wool which gives the piece a slightly fuzzy look. Crane on Blue Background – created by Dr. Young Chung, this is another example of surface embroidery. The piece the museum has is about 6” x 6” and is incredible fine, detailed work. What’s even more amazing? Dr. Chung actually has the original wall-sized piece in her studio (yes, wall-sized). Who has the patience to embroider a piece the size of a wall? Mourning Sampler – this sampler is unique because it’s obviously a work-in-progress. The designs are at odd angles, you can tell the designer is trying out stitches. It’s a “mourning” sampler due to the harp. Although the artist isn’t known for sure, it has been dated to the 1870’s. Adam & Eve Sampler – also done by an 8-year-old (seriously, these 8-year-olds are impressive) and dated to 1789, this sampler shows Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. Unique to this garden though is a picket fence. I think that’s known as creative license. Village Belle – stunning in both the size (29” x 19”) and the emotion radiating from the female figure, this is an amazing example of the power of embroidery in the hands of a contemporary artist. The subtle shading in the background is a form of “needle painting” is remarkable and truly brings out the flesh tones and the richness of the fabric in her dress. Ebikhil – this seems like an odd piece at first. On the front side is a man framed random threads just tangled and interweaving a frame around the central figure. Flip it over though and all those random threads suddenly forms people, mountains, trees, fish, a sunrise, and numerous other animals. I cannot even begin to figure out how to the creator figured this out and made this work. Mind blowing. Audrey Francini Bench – another example of crewelwork, works by this artist are sold at auction for thousands of dollars. Proof that this craft has arrived an a legitimate art form. Chinese portrait – when I first saw this piece, I actually thought it was a black and white photograph of a woman from the 1940’s. I thought maybe it was the artist that created the piece next to it. Nope. It’s an actual piece of Chinese silk embroidery done in a style that was popular in China called Su embroidery that was celebrated, banned and then resurrected. What makes this style so realistic? The silk thread,is split and then split and then split again so it’s barely the width of a human hair. Wow. For more information on this form of embroidery, check out this article from the Art of Silk. Wall Tapestry of the U.S. – Made of multiple panels worked on by stitchers across the U.S.A., each person worked on the part of the U.S. they were from and then the pieces were put together over six years. All different techniques are shown. My favorite? The gopher is pretty cute, and I’ve always been partial to beaded snakes. Tiger – a stunning example of thread painting, I could not get a good picture of this piece due to reflections on the glass. However, it’s aptly named “thread painting” because it literally looks like a painting. The tiger is fantastic and very life-like and stares right back at you. As Cynthia noted, there are six different colors in the eyes alone. Florentine Sampler – if you’re a little intimidated, this piece should reassure you that not everything needs to be perfect. Rand from EGA shares why he likes this piece, which hangs right by his desk at work – look at the top corner? See the unfinished block? A little reminder everyday that we’re not always perfect, but we’re still beautiful. “Needlework done with the Mouth” – If you listen all the way to the end, you’ll be rewarded with an incredible story of how Martha A. Honeywell made this piece. An incredible story showcasing how someone’s love for the craft didn’t stop them from creating beautiful, delicate pieces despite any handicaps. Not just for “little old ladies sitting on their front porch” this museum showcases where the craft started, how people engaged with it over time, and contemporary artists that are pushing the boundaries of what it can be. Guest Intro paragraph Matt Jenkins is a Winnipeg, Canada-based blacksmith and owner of Cloverdale Forge. He got his start in blacksmithing by spending college summers at a Canadian national park doing historical re-creations for tourists. He later studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. He now works days as a mechanical engineer and nights and weekends in his own shop. Last summer he took first place in Drawing and Design and the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy. What We Talked About Matt followed in his father's footsteps by working summers at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site as a blacksmith doing historical re-creations for the public. He recalls some of the funniest questions people asked him and the jokes his dad used to play on the tourists. Matt received a degree in mechanical engineering, but also studied at the John C. Campbell school in North Carolina, where he still teaches one week every summer. This year his class will take place in September. He works two full-time jobs. During the day, he's a mechanical engineer for a custom metal manufacturer doing computer aided drafting. On nights and weekends he's in his own shop, Cloverdale Forge, on his family's farm. His shop is 400 square feet and he's looking at doing an expansion soon. Matt teaches classes at Cloverdale and has 4 planned for this summer doing basic beginner blacksmithing. He's tyring to build a blacksmithing community and an appreciation for the art in a fairly isolated location. Last summer Matt won 1st place at the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy in the Drawing and Design competition. The contest theme was trash cans. His drawing can be seen at http://www.biennaleartefabbrile.it/il-campionato/classifica-2015/ Matt's trip to Italy was part of a larger European trip he took with two other blacksmith friends. They attended a conference in the Czech Republic where Matt won the “longest spike competition” in part of a Blacksmith Triathlon. They also visited Germany and blacksmith friend Gosta Gablick. “It's fun traveling with other blacksmiths because they look at the same weird things that I do,” Matt says. Matt is also a part of an annual art event in Winnipeg called “Nuit Blanche” where artists create and display their works overnight. “We pull the forges into city square and build something,” Matt says. “In our area, the only time you experience blacksmithing is at a fur trading post, so to show people it's not just repair of muskets and traps, I bring the art to them on that night.” Matt uses many outlets to advertise and sell his products including a business web site with a blog, Facebook, Instagram and Etsy. The Etsy site works well for advertising and exposure, Matt says, but doesn't bring in huge sales. If Matt could meet one blacksmith, dead or alive, he says he would choose the “nameless guys” who've been doing it forever. “Everyone says the artistic stuff, but the art comes from me. She is a graduate of Yale University and William and Mary and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Tribe. Annette resides with her family in Qualla, N.C., and is an avid mountain biker, and a staunch advocate for equal rights, education, and Cherokee history. She's joining us to talk about her journey of writing her award-winning debut novel, Even as We Breathe, and her latest book. She also got her Masters's degree at William and Mary. She talks about why chose to come back to the Smokies. Annette mentions her family and the connections she has in North Carolina and wants to continue to raise her family there. Annette also was a director if the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. She was also a teacher for 12 years. She also talks about her writing. Annette mentions having amazing teachers growing up which influenced her to be creative. She mentions a quote someone from Yale said to her and her mother when they visited the first time. The quote was “the best thing to do with a world-class education is to share it.” Her goals as a teacher are to create empathy and resilience through writing and the process. Some topics she mentions within this are making mistakes and the work that is part of this like the process of editing and writing. She discusses some ways she would teach her students. Annette talks about a manuscript that never officially got published called Going to Water. It's about a fictional story of her grandfather. She never got to know who he actually was as he passed away at an early age. So the character in the story was as close to what she knew of him, full of adventure.Segment 3Annette talks about her book Even as We Breathe, which came out in 2020. She says that she had read an article about the role that the Grove Park Inn played in World War II and Ashville's role as well. This history wasn't familiar to many historians and people like herself who have lived in Ashville for a long time. She gave herself a writing prompt and spent a long time writing on the simplest object that she could think of. In her method of writing, Annette spent time in a very tiny room in the Jackson County Library in Sylva, North Carolina. She talks about the story of what she wrote. She is very inspired by where she loves and the interactions as shown in her novel. It takes place in 1942 and is a coming-of-age kind of story. Until she was working on the marketing packet, she didn't realize that she wrote historical fiction. Other topics include issues of identity, racism, and Cherokee culture. She tells a funny story about teaching her students. She also talks about her decision to retire from teaching.Segment 4Annette says that she is working on a new book, a novel that's contemporary with a female protagonist. It's set in Cherokee, which is close to home. She also does nonfiction writing for regional magazines and edits for the Appalachian Future Series through the University Press of Kentucky. She also talks about teaching workshops in different locations. Annette also talks about mountain biking. She says that she likes to be in the middle of the woods, biking fast, and being isolated for a moment from everything. She even lost 65 pounds by mountain biking.
