Today we're joined by Jonathan “JP” Pokluda, pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, and author of “Why Do I Do What I Don't Want to Do?” to discuss the book as well as a few other things. First, JP explains his approach to preaching and the rigorous process he goes through to make sure that the sermons he prepares are the best that they can be. Preaching in Waco presents its own challenges and opportunities, since there are many college students who live there. JP talks about how he approaches speaking to young adult congregations. Then, what is sin and how should we think about it? We dive into the intricacies of sin and how our fleshly desires can rule over us if we're not staying aware. We also discuss the idea of authenticity – both good and bad – and how Christians need to submit both authenticity and autonomy in order for them to be virtues. Near the end of the interview, JP also poses a pointed question: What do you think happens after you die? And if you think you're going to heaven, how sure are you? --- Timecodes: (01:20) Interview with JP begins (03:45) How do you prepare sermons? Are you carrying around what's killing you? Pastor and author JP Pokluda tells Sadie it really can be that "simple" to take a step back and pinpoint what you're allowing to have control over you and how to take control back. But the good news is that owning those mistakes — those vulnerabilities — is a way to reclaim your own life, and when you can, share those struggles with others! Sadie has a good method for determining if you're oversharing on social media. JP encourages us to turn our struggles into our story and turn our messes into our messages. You're not alone in whatever it is that looms large in your life, whether in secret or not. Sadie and JP share how their anxieties physically manifested in each of their lives and how far they've come to be able to talk freely and encourage others. Plus, can some forms of anxiety actually be a product of pride? This week, Jonathan "JP" Pokluda, lead pastor at Harris Creek Baptist Church and author of Outdated, teaches on 1 Timothy 4:12 and gives us 5 things to look for or inspect as you date. No matter what life stage you are in, this episode will encourage you to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
My guest for The Happy Hour #370 is Jonathan “JP” Pokluda. JP is the Lead Pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church in Waco, TX. Author of best-selling "Welcome to Adulting," and newly released "Outdated", JP seeks to offer Millennials and Gen Z a roadmap for dating in a world that desires to find love that lasts when dating has changed. JP has such a great word for both young people and parents as we talk to our kids about dating. This episode is so timely with the release of both of our books! In today’s show, we talk a bit about JP’s past before choosing Jesus at 21 and the life transformation that followed, as well as what it looks like to be a Christian in today’s world without the culture and motions. JP also dives into some of the misconceptions of dating, singleness and marriage and how we can honor God in any stage we are in. I love when he says, “We’re not looking for the one, we’re looking for someone as a follower of Jesus who is also a follower of Jesus.” SO true. I’m so thankful for the ministry JP is doing, and helping people approach dating and singleness in a healthy, God-honoring way. If you’re looking for dating advice, or advice for singles, then Jonathan Pokluda, former leader of The Porch, is the go-to guy. JP led The Porch for over a decade and grew the ministry to become the largest weekly young adult gathering of it’s kind. In this 2-part series I have some incredible questions for him about singleness, dating, and pre-marriage. I wanted to know all about the biggest lies singles believe, how important physical attraction is, what the most common complaints are among single men and women, how promiscuous behavior effects someone’s marriage, what red flags to look out for, and so much more! He answers these questions in this 2-part series, but also coves these topics in his new book, Outdated: Find Love That Lasts When Dating Has Changed. We even talk about his passion behind this book and his hopes that it will be a leading influence in changing the current dating culture for today’s singles. Jonathan “JP” Pokluda is the Lead Pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church in Waco, TX. He was formerly the leader of The Porch in Dallas, TX which grew to be the largest weekly young adult gathering of its kind in the country. JP didn’t come to understand the grace of the Gospel until his early twenties after being involved in different denominational churches his entire life. This ignited a desire in him to inspire young adults to radically follow Jesus Christ and unleash them to change the world. His best-selling book, Welcome to Adulting, offers millennials a roadmap to navigating faith, finding a spouse, finances, and the future. Following the release of Welcome to Adulting, he wrote Welcome to Adulting: Survival Guide, that provides a 42-day guide to surviving adulthood. JP’s most recent release, Welcoming the Future Church, inspires ministry leaders to keep their churches young, because Millennials, Gen Y and Gen Z are the future of the church. His next book, OutDated, releases in March and was written after years of observing the changing landscape of dating. JP's partner in ministry is Monica, his wife of sixteen years, and together they disciple their children Presley, Finley, and Weston.JP InstagramJP SermonsBook: Welcome to Adulting Book: Outdated Chasing What Matters Instagram Chasing What Matters Website

The Guys Like Us Podcast is joined with Jonathan “JP” Pokluda who is an author and pastor. We begin the show by diving into his latest book, “Welcome to Adulting: Navigating Faith, Friendship, Finances, and the Future.” Jonathan grew up outside of the faith, and did not have a relationship with Christ until he made some changes in his early 20’s. Are you coming to faith? Are you looking to get back into your faith? JP shares a multitude of ways to get involved and it starts with knowing what you believe. Staying on a path where you know the right source of knowledge, and recognizing that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” We bring it back to the beginning of all things, where does creation come from? We talk about JP’s personal experience facing pornography and how he’s been able to get out of this addiction. Many are struggling with pornography but the good news is that there is hope, and it’s available now. Finally, he shares the importance of being vulnerable, not only for your own deliverance, but to reach others and bring freedom to the world.
How in the world do we date healthily in our communities?
The ultimate Christian dating question: How in the world do we date healthily in our communities? And no, we are not referring to anything strangely related to the years of, “I Kissed Dating Goodbye”. But rather, how do we today actually date in our church communities respectfully and lovingly? It’s complex, we know. Today we sit down with Jonathan “JP” Pokluda, the Campus Pastor of Watermark Community Church and leader of The Porch, an influential Young Adult gathering. Their messages are highly influential in the Young Adults and singles community. JP has a distinct passion is to share the Gospel with anyone who will listen and most recently, he has seen this passion come out through writing as he's RELEASED a new book called Welcome to Adulting. We LOVE that title! The book targets Millennials and those passionate about ministering to them. It even has a chapter on dating so CHECK IT OUT y’all. Today we get into talking about the ever so challenging topic of DATING in community. It can be so tough to date in the church, it honestly one of the hardest things to navigate. We want to date, but we also don’t want to leave things overly uncomfortable or unsettled if it doesn’t work out. We want to be respectful, and gentle and loving but also truthful… which begs the question, how do we break up with someone lovingly? Also what if you want to date someone your FRIEND DATED? How do we navigate all the different dynamics you guys? We couldn’t think of anyone better to talk about this than JP and we hope you are blessed by this conversation as much as we were! Don’t forget to come on over to our Instagram @heartofdating for all the dating insight and wisdom as well as updates about all of our shows. We’d love to connect with you!
