Bec and John pitched Justin on the idea of assigning them ANY album from across Elvis's entire discography, from any time or country, and the two of them would have to try to make the case that their pick is better than the other's, even if it may challenge them to do so. So Bec was assigned the #1 2016 UK album "The Wonder of You with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra," the sequel release to "If I Can Dream," which we have not covered on TCBCast before! Produced by Nick Patrick, Don Reedman and Priscilla Presley, same as the first volume, which Bec really liked, can she make the case that it's a strong listen - or was there are precipitous drop-off in experimentation in favor of an overly safe, commercial follow-up, featuring recognizable hits like "Suspicious Minds," "Kentucky Rain" and "Always On My Mind"? John, on the other hand, being an avid study of Elvis' gospel music, was assigned the 2018 album "Where No One Stands Alone," a #1-charting album from the US's Top Christian Albums, which John had never listened to before except for the title duet with album co-producer Lisa Marie Presley. Although original backing vocalists who worked with Elvis such as Darlene Love, Cissy Houston, Bill Baize, Terry Blackwood, Armond Morales, Ed Hill, Jim Murray, Larry Stickland and Donnie Sumner were brought back to add authenticity to the project, the new arrangements by producer Andy Childs reflected contemporary changes in the field of American gospel music that when applied to Elvis' songs... well, let's say John will have his work cut out for him making a strong case for it being the better record. (Note from Justin: "Where No One Stands Alone" had been briefly reviewed at release on a very early episode of TCBCast, which Gurdip & I would probably re-evaluate our opinions from as well with hindsight.) For Song of the Week, John takes the opportunity of just having passed Easter to reflect on Elvis' interpretation of Shirl Milete's "Life," which was released as a single in 1971, and explores how its "Christianity-by-New-Age" approach may have resonated with Elvis' spiritual perspective on life, love and creativity. Then Bec digs into Pomus-Shuman's "Night Rider," featured on both the Pot Luck album and in the film "Tickle Me," highlighting its eerie lyrics despite its deceptively upbeat arrangement. Let's talk about the book "Child Bride" by Suzanne Finstad. There are some online that are of the opinion that the book is not accurate nor factual, due to the fact that in the late 1990s, Priscilla Presley successfully sued for defamation one of the book's sources - a man that knew Priscilla back in the late 1950s and early 1960s named Currie Grant.   In 1996, while conducting interviews for "Child Bride", Suzanne's investigation into Priscilla's claims about her early days with Elvis Presley in Germany blew Priscilla's narrative out of the water - once Suzanne began to interview Currie Grant and uncover HIS version of events. Shortly thereafter, enraged with anger (and some would say fear) Priscilla proceeded to sue Currie over some heated taped interviews that he gave to the author- both alone, and also in conjunction with Priscilla herself at the author's home. Priscilla took issue with the story that Currie told Suzanne about the nature of his relationship with Priscilla, BEFORE she had met Elvis. This explosive story punched a hole in the narrative that Priscilla had and has been telling in the public domain for decades- one that she famously chronicled in her 1985 memoir, "Elvis and Me." In her memoir, Priscilla says that she was a 14 year old innocent when she married Elvis and remained one until their wedding day in May 1967. Needless to say, Currie does not agree with Priscilla's version of events surrounding the timeline of Priscilla's early days - both with him and with Elvis in Germany.   Currie Grant always insisted that Priscilla's version of events was NOT what really happened. In 1998, Priscilla won her defamation case against Currie Grant. However, there is far more to the story. In 2010, an Elvis biographer and researcher named Alana Nash uncovered the details of the once confidential legal settlement between Currie and Priscilla following the lawsuit. What were those details, and why do they seem to protect Currie as well, despite the fact that Priscilla is the one that actually WON the defamation lawsuit against him?   The results are eye opening, and only serve to raise more questions - namely- is the carefully crafted origin story that Priscilla Presley created about herself true- or is it HER version of a made up fiction? As a result, she grew up a beautiful, yet very sad, lonely little girl. Let's officially start the next book read  - Suzanne Finstad's 1997 book - "Child Bride" The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley! Let's set the stage for the book with the author's Prologue and Chapter 1- but first - Why did the author endeavor to write this book in the first place? Simple. Before "Child Bride" - The ONLY biography of Priscilla Presley out in the media and culture was Priscilla's own 1985 autobiography of her life with Elvis Presley - the worldwide sensation "Elvis and Me. However, it was a very narrow and one sided perception of Priscilla and her orgin story - with NO accounts or interviews (other than Priscilla's own narrative) to counter or substantiate her origin story and legend. This book aims to right this- with over 2 years of methodical research and interviews with over 300 people who knew Priscilla at different stages of her (then) 5 decade life, it shatters the engrained, established Priscilla Presley "myth" like no other book has, before or since.  In 2025, Priscilla Presley published another memoir chronicling her life with Elvis called "Softly As I Leave You" - and many critics complained that this book was just another one of her guarded rehashed narratives she has been telling about her life- in dozens of interviews since the the mid 1980s. Some would argue that "Child Bride" is as relevant today as it was in 1997 when it was published - particularly when you pair it along side the numerous and troubling headlines that Priscilla Presley has been involved with in 2025 - right up to the present day. This week, Bec decided that it's been a while since she's gotten to talk about '70s concert material, so we're discussing the legendary August 19, 1974, show in which Elvis abandoned his usual setlist and completely changed directions. Opening with "Big Boss Man" instead of "See See Rider", filling out the show with tons of newer and more contemporary material like "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues", "Promised Land" and "It's Midnight" and forgoing most of his iconic hits in favor of more unique and intimate performances just for his Vegas audiences.  We sit down with the soundboard recording and try to reckon with how Elvis chose to make such a bold move, whether fans and audiences appreciated it, and why he abandoned it so quickly to fall back into the comfortable professional grooves that would carry him to the end of his life. And before all that, Bec also fills us in her trip to see Priscilla Presley's recent live talk in Sydney. For Song of the Week, somehow without coordinating it at all, each host picked one of the only two songs written for Elvis by Stanley Gelber, the lawyer-turned-pro songwriter who submitted a handful of demos to Hill & Range in the 1960s, landing an Elvis cut with Bec's pick of "My Desert Serenade" from the Harum Scarum soundtrack.
