Part 2 of the Nuclear Mini-Series This is part two of my mini-series on nuclear power and whether it could be the clean energy solution we've all been waiting for.As I said before (and it bears repeating): fossil fuels kill about 8 million people every single year — more than the populations of Aotearoa and most of the Pacific Islands combined.Despite that, nuclear power remains the energy source we fear the most. But should we?In the last episode, we explored the science of nuclear — what it is, how it works, and why it's not nearly as scary as it sounds. In this episode, we dive into its history — a sometimes horrifying, sometimes absurd, and often misunderstood timeline that shaped our collective anxiety around nuclear energy. In this episode, I cover:The early discoveries of nuclear materials and radiationHow public fear around nuclear energy really beganThe rise of nuclear bombs and the race for atomic powerWhat actually happens inside a nuclear reactor (in plain English)The major nuclear disasters that shaped global perceptionWhat went wrong at Three Mile IslandWhat made Chernobyl so catastrophicWhy Fukushima shook public confidence in nuclear safetyKey quotes:“Nuclear energy got its hideous reputation before it had even powered a single light bulb.”“Creepy green glows and mutant fish? That's science fiction, not reality.”“Public anxiety about nuclear energy didn't actually start with power stations.”Books & Resources Mentioned:Here are the books and materials I mentioned for anyone who wants to explore:The Radium Girls by Kate MooreA gripping and enraging true story of the young women who painted glow-in-the-dark watch faces with radioactive paint — and paid the ultimate price. The Woman Who Knew Too Much by Gayle GreeneA biography of Dr. Alice Stewart, who studied radiation risks and stood up to the nuclear establishment. (Recommended for broader radiation safety context).Atoms and Ashes: A Global History of Nuclear Disasters by Serhii PlokhyCovers Six major nuclear incidents — including Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island — with historical and political analysis. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, I also recommend googling:“Radithor” (yes, that glowing bottled water was real)“Clarence Dally and Thomas Edison” (the first radiation death in the U.S).Find our full podcast via the website here:https://www.nowthatswhaticall.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nowthatswhaticallgreen/You can follow me on socials on the below accounts.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/briannemwest/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@briannemwestLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/briannemwest/For our latest big project, find out more about Incrediballs here: https://incrediballs.com/
My friend Kim loves crime stories from Crime Junkie to Dateline. Me? Not so much. But I enjoy a good, not-too-gory crime story where the bad guy gets it in the end. Since I'm part of a vast cancer community, I hear stories that encourage me and some that make me so upset that I can't sleep. This is one of those stories. In 1898, Pierre and Madam Curie discovered radium. In 1903, Pierre Curie said, "He would not care to be alone with radium in a room as it would burn all the skin off his body, destroy his eyesight, and probably kill him." In the 1920s, young women (average age 14) were hired to paint radium on watches and clock dials. Radium was fluorescent, so it made the numbers easier to read. However, it was also incredibly toxic and could turn bones into a fragile honeycomb. Fast forward to New Jersey in 1920 to the U.S. Radium Corporation (USRC). The owners and scientists at USRC knew that radium in large amounts was very dangerous. Yet these young girls were told, "After you dip your paintbrush in radium, put the tip in your mouth to make it a finer point before you start painting." When I told my husband how many of these young women died from radium poisoning, he said, "This is murder." Yes, it was murder. But no one went to jail. However, these women did get their revenge. ______ Ground Luxe When I was forced into menopause with my cancer diagnosis, restful sleep NO LONGER HAPPENED FOR ME. One of my podcast guests shared that he has become a great sleeper, partly thanks to grounding sheets. After my skepticism passed, my desperation to sleep took over. I started reading articles, and I discovered that the science is solid. Studies have shown that participants using grounding sheets experience a significant drop in cortisol levels, leading to improved sleep quality and reduced stress. What did I have to lose? I researched, found the best grounding sheets on the market for the best price, and bought them. It took me a few nights, but I sleep much deeper now. I fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed! I wish someone had told me about these sheets years ago. I contacted the company, and they offered my community a 20% discount! https://groundluxe.com/deborahenos Use the code Enos20 for 20% off. ______ Toups and Co It's happened...I'm putting beef tallow on my face, and my skin looks lush, and it doesn't smell like a hamburger :) I've seen the TikTok videos about beef tallow. I avoided trying it because it sounded like I'd be putting grease on my face. Enough people asked me about it, so I started reading more information and trying out various tallows. There was one company that stood out to me. I feel like I hit a home run with the brand Toups and Co. I first heard of this brand on a friend's podcast (Holistic Hilda with the Weston A Price Foundation). She interviewed the founder, Emily Toups. She was a mom looking for a solution to her child's skin issues. She was frustrated with the lack of progress with drugstore and prescription meds, so she reached out to a local farmer for tallow. The rest, as they say, is history. Her daughter is healed, and my skin looks great, haha! Thank you, Toups Family, for making such excellent products and offering my community a 15% discount. I'm currently using: Frankincense Skim Balm Blue Tansy Body Oil The Nourishing Skin Care Set (this includes skin balm, body oil, tinted lip chap, and a tallow bar—and it's on sale!). Deodorant - it really works! Use the link below for 15% off of your order: https://toupsandco.com/DEBORAHENOS ______ Martinelli Apple Cider I like having a cocktail with girlfriends. And before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I never gave it a second thought. Alcohol was part of my social life, or I'd have a glass of wine on a flight to chill out. Recent research has made me rethink my choices. Research shared by the Susan G. Komen Center tells us that each cocktail I consume can increase my breast cancer risk by 7%. And 2-3 drinks per day can increase my risk by 20%. This is why I always have Martinelli Apple Cider on hand. It's my favorite Mocktail!
This week on Hashtag History, we will be discussing the Radium Girls. The Radium Girls refers to the female employees of a radium factory that contracted radiation poisoning from painting radium dials and hands on watches. The women were instructed to use their lips to make the bristles of the paintbrush form into a fine point that would then be used to paint radium onto the watch faces. Lip-dip-paint over and over again, each time, ingesting small amounts of radium. This sounds wild…because it is. But in late-1920s when all of this was happening, the common belief was that radium was not only harmless, but that it also had healing properties. Maybe even further than that, radium was also thought to be…fun. The women at this factory became known as “ghost girls” because the radium dust particles would fall off onto their clothing, making them glow in the dark. Some of these women wore their best dresses to work so they could purposefully make their dresses illuminate. Some women even painted their nails and their teeth with the radium, not knowing any better. Now, of course, these poor women would start to show signs of illness. Things like anemia, bone fractures, and something else that would eventually become known as “radium jaw”. Because of the amount of radium these women were ingesting directly into their mouths, their mouths began to decay at a rapid, rapid pace. Toothaches turned into tooth extractions. Tooth extractions turned into ulcers. Multiple ulcers all at once. In perhaps the worst story I read while doing my research, one woman in particular had to have multiple teeth removed but was still in severe pain. When she went to the dentist to have him check her out again, he gently placed his fingers in her mouth…and her jaw literally fell off. It just melted off. The dentist removed her jaw, “Not by an operation, but merely by putting his fingers in her mouth and lifting it out.”This would ultimately lead to a lengthy legal battle between the women and the U.S. Radium Corporation, who denied responsibility, and would – of course – ultimately lead to the untimely and painful deaths of many of the women involved.Follow Hashtag History on Instagram @hashtaghistory_podcast for all of the pictures mentioned in this episode.Citations for all sources can be located on our website at www.HashtagHistory-Pod.com. This week, we'll delve into a cautionary tale: the "Radium Girls." These women were employed to paint glow in the dark numbers on watch faces and dials in the 1920s and 30s using radium paint. Assured that the paint was safe, the girls were instructed to shape their paintbrushes into sharp points with their own lips. But, turns out, ingesting radioactive radium paint isn't safe at all, and as the women became sick and sicker and died, the companies they worked for chose to gaslight them, refusing to take responsibility all while lining their pockets with profits. But these women fought back, standing up while laying down and their fight set an important precedent we can't afford to forget. Let's fix that. Support the show! In 1917, scores of patriotic young girls counted their lucky stars to have secured jobs working at a large warehouse complex in Orange, New Jersey. The task was tedious and repetitive, but it paid well, and they were pleased to be ‘doing their bit' for the war effort. But little did they know, for most girls, that this job would also lead to a gruesome untimely demise. In fact, when a New Jersey Doctor performed autopsies on some of the so-called ‘Radium Girls' in 1928, he concluded that they were “still glowing in their coffins”, and rumour has it they still glow to this day.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In the 20th century, young women were hired to paint watch dials with radium, unknowingly exposing themselves to deadly radiation. They were told the paint was harmless, and even encouraged to lick their brushes for precision. Many suffered horrifying health effects, like rotting jaws and fatal cancers, as companies denied responsibility. Their battle for justice not only exposed corporate negligence, but also led to major changes in workplace safety standards. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Around the 1920s young women and girls were elated to land a high paying job at US Radium Company. Their task would be to paint radium based paint on watch faces to make them glow in the dark. However through this, the girls were unknowingly exposing themselves to lethal amounts of radiation. As their health deteriorated, they faced a relentless battle against a powerful company that refused to take responsibility.
Hello, everyone; thanks for tuning in. Plenty of excellent mixes are available online. When Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in 1898, the chemical element was quickly adopted by manufacturers for its luminescent properties that would go on to be used in, among other things, the painting of clock faces, watches, and instrument panels, allowing them to be seen in the dark. At the time, the introduction of radioluminescent materials into manufacturing was hailed as a scientific solution to an age-old frustration, but it didn't take long before that solution was shown to have terrible consequences. As a radioactive element, radium is highly toxic to humans, particularly when ingested or inhaled. While it seemed unlikely that anyone would ingest or inhale the radium used to paint a clockface, this fact posed a serious problem for the largely female factory workers whose job it was to paint the dials. These “Radium Girls,” as they would come to be known, not only spent most of their day in close proximity to the paint, but also employed a technique in which they frequently wet their paintbrushes with their mouths, consuming small amounts of radium in the process. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, hundreds of young women working in at least three radium dial factories in the United States suffered deadly radiation poisoning as a result of working so closely with radium, all without any safety protocols and completely unaware of the dangers. After dozens of deaths, a group of factory workers successfully sued their employers for damages, exposing the widespread disregard for worker safety. While the suits were generally a major victory for the American labor movement, it was ultimately hard-won and little comfort to those who would die within a few years.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesCamden Courier-Post. 1928. The young women who worked as watch face dial painters during and after WW1 counted themselves lucky to have landed such an opportunity. The pay made them top earners in their communities, the job was seen as glamorous, and they got to work in close contact with the new miracle health element: radium. Except of course that radium is actually radioactive poison. But they didn't know that. Yet. In 1914, a scientist made a new kind of paint, a paint that glowed. A company was founded, and they needed girls with small hands to work there, applying that paint to the hands and numbers of watches and to the dials of gauges in aircraft. One problem - the paint was deadly. And nobody told the girls.

On this episode of Our American Stories, in 1898, the chemical element that glows in the dark was discovered. Years later, young women began working in radium factories, which was viewed as a very glamorous, upscale job. Kate Moore, author of “Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women”, shares the story of these women. If it glows, it's probably dangerous. In this one, Ian and Liv talk about the Radium Girls, five young women who filed a lawsuit against their employer for knowingly exposing them to a deadly radioactive chemical: Radium. And, as you can imagine, the corporate lawyers of the early 1900s would stop at nothing to prove their false innocence. Also, Liv is ready for a suppository. Ian got a new keyboard.
This episode strays away from our usual path of interviews with oncologists and health experts. Today, we're going into the world of crime and consequence. I'm honored to be joined by Kate Moore, the brilliant mind behind "The Radium Girls." This book, a personal favorite of mine, not only captivated me but also disturbed me to the core. Today's conversation isn't about your typical crime drama. It's about a crime that unfolded silently, hidden within the glow of radium, a substance once celebrated for its luminescent properties. But beneath its shimmering allure lies a dark truth—a truth that Kate's book fearlessly confronts. In an era where crime stories dominate our screens and shelves, we often forget the crimes silently committed against our health and environment. The story of the Radium Girls falls precisely into this category—a tale of betrayal, injustice, and the insidious impact of unchecked industrial practices. Join us as we discuss all of the unsettling details of this cancer crime story. Kate Moore, hailing from the UK, brings her expertise and passion to our conversation, guiding us through this haunting narrative. FROM THE VAULT - in 1917, the Radium Luminous Material Corporation started producing luminous paints called Undark, with companies quickly realising how helpful luminescent watch faces would be for the military. Hordes of women were employed in factories, tasked with the painstaking job of painting the watches... only as we all know, radium and humans do not mix.

During World War I, hundreds of young women went to work in clock factories, painting watch dials with luminous radium paint. But after the girls — who literally glowed in the dark after their shifts — began to experience gruesome side effects, they began a race-against-time fight for justice that would forever change US labor laws. Radiation today is used to treat a variety of illnesses. But we also know how dangerous it can be and the impact it can have when individuals are exposed. How do we know that? In the 1920's, a group of factory workers suffered torturous illnesses and death due to their exposure to radium. Was this accidental or intentional? And how did this story make an impact that still lives on today? This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4106013/advertisement
